All Lester remembers of his early life is a name spoken by a hoarse voice, a silver blade biting into his baby skin, and the pungent odour of rotting trash. He once thought he was never wanted-- that someone like him could only be relegated to the blood and dirt on the streets. And until he was ten, he believed that.

Lester does not know his origins. The only thing he has is his name which he does not quite like but has grown to tolerate. He spends his life on the streets up till he is ten. When he meets two people, both running away from Fjerda, he offers them a guide around the city with a reveal of its secret in return for money and a roof over his head. He sees them as his chance to get out of the street, they see him as an opportunity.

  happily ever afters were never meant for someone like them

  Their story (his story, back then) begins with a cold house and

  expectations too high, a mother who wanted him to be the model artisan

  and a father who wanted him to be the model citizen. Their story begins

  with "what a cute little boy, what's his name?" and him replying "I'm not

  a boy, I'm just me" but nobody hears, nobody sees. He walks through life

  with lessons piling atop another and talents falling to the wayside, his

  mother yelling at him because he hasn't sold an artwork or performed a

  solo dance before the age of 8 and his father yelling at him because he

  can't speak in public without sweating or vomiting, and all he wants to do

  is ask them "who am I?"

  "Do you love me?" he (almost they, then) dares to ask one time, and his

  mother says "of course I do, now practice your arabesque again, it's not

  quite right." He asks his father "are you proud of me?" and his father

  says, "of course I am, and I would be more proud if you could finally do

  what I asked you to do and practice for the Eisteddfod next week." It

  doesn't take a genius for he– they– to stop asking, and then...

  "You're a wimp, what kind of sissy go around with long hair like that?"

  Their hair is pulled and their face is spat upon, all by people who their

  parents want them to befriend, and for the first time in their life they're

  thankful for the late time their parents get home and how their sudden

  tendency towards long sleeves and pants go unquestioned. There are

  other things that slip under the radar as well, like the bruises that bloom

  beneath their clothes and the fragile shards of their disintegrating mind,

  but it's fine. They're already a disappointment, they can't possibly expect

  more of their parents, right?

  But just as they think they've lost everything they could consider love,

  just as they think their world will be reduced to pinnacles they can never

  reach and smiles that never appear, a boy steps in front of them and gets

  a detention he could've otherwise avoided. Instead of speeches and

  artwork and dances, they spend the afternoon whispering through a

  crack in the window, daring to laugh (them! laugh!!) with someone they

  could almost call a friend, and run soft fingers over skin that knits

  beneath their touch. They dance and draw for someone who doesn't say

  "try again" but who says "well done!" They smile for someone who

  doesn't say "you're useless" but who says "you deserve better" and... they

  hope, for once.

  Good things were never meant to last, though, and someone puts two

  and two together, sees the way Josh comes back fresh from fights and

  sees the way they look so tired afterwards. Sees the things they thought

  were invisible and say "hey, you're a Healer" like it's a curse word and

  Josh saying "so what?" Sees the way their father's blood runs thick and

  fast over their hands, sees the way their mother curses them with her

  dying breath because—
