I just need a guide.

Shiloh

In One Ear And Out The Other
A tour, you could say. Where I should and shouldn't post some things, like prompts for RP, characters, etc. I've occasionally come here and looked around, but it all seems so freaking complicated.

I don't even know if this is the right place to ask.

So, yeah. If I could get someone to write me up a guide on how to work this contraption, that'd be absolutely thrilling.

This should do it...

First and foremost, I would visit the Official Site Rules to be aware of what is and isn't allowed. After this, hop on over to the New Account Rule to learn about certain features that are locked until you make 10 posts and your account is 24 hours old. This is to prevent spam bots and other such fake accounts. Once you're good there, begin exploring the site!

Now onto our next page, the Site Questions & Information this is where if you have a question about something you can post here. If it’s more of a private or urgent matter, then submit a support ticket here and an admin will help you out.

Your Private workshop can only be accessed by you and staff! It's for thing such as WIP character sheets!

After that, the General Discussion forum is for basically anything you can think of! As long as it doesn’t go against the site rules, or fall into any of the other places listed below or its subforums such as Personal Discussion and #Fourmgames.

Next, Video Games is for discussion on the obvious.

Roleplay Discussion and Advice is for you two get help developing or constructive criticism on your ideas. There is also a subforum to get feedback on characters. But be warned, this section is NOT for recruitment!

Creativity is there for you to share any prose, poems, drawings, or any other bits and pieces of artwork you might have! Occasionally, there are users who offer do draw for free as well.

Now we’re getting deep. Looking for Partners is specifically for people looking for one or two other players to create and roleplay together. (My search is in my signature!)

Looking for Group is similar to the last one, but is geared to roleplays with either small (3-4) or large (sometimes reaching 20+) players within them. The subfourms inside are to help filter what you're looking for whether it be players or an RP.

One on One is where threads hosting Roleplays between partners are located. But, if got wish, you are able to roleplay in PMs or off site but it's not encouraged.

FandomFantasyRealistic/Modern, and Futuristic is where the majority standard group Roleplays that take place. These are usually ranging in level and without mechanics such as dice.

The Dice section is usually for Roleplays that require players to roll dice for a variety of reasons. It could be to fight an enemy or even search a room.

Nation Building's a bit different. In this case, you're usually in control of a nation rather than one character. Think about games like the Sims.

The Colosseum is for Roleplays centered around combat or fighting, usually in an arena like setting.

The Quest Log is much different than the rest. It's similar to a choose your own adventure book (if anyone remembers what those are…) The GM posts a scenario and a series of options, letting anyone who wants to to vote on what the character(s) do(es.) No signup required usually as people are allowed to come and go as they please.

And finally, Hosted Projects. You need 250 posts to be able to post anything here. But once you can, these roleplays have tons of little features that make running complex and large scale games much easier.

wow so helpful! :)

To add to @StoneWolf18's awesome guide

You also have Tutorials to help you learn to use site features and roleplay

Now how the genre are defined for this site are

  • Fantasy - roleplays that take place in an entirely made up world
  • Realistic/Modern - roleplays that take place in a version of the real world ( includes historical roleplays, superhero roleplays, and roleplays with magic in our world )
  • Sci-Fi/Futuristic - roleplays that take place in some version of the future with possible sci-fi elements

To clarify that last:

Fantasy is for settings that are, well, fantastical.  Generally involves a lot of magic and/or magical beasts.  If you're familiar with Piers Anthony's Xanth series, that would be Fantasy (except here it would be Fandom, because it's published material.  But I digress).

Realistic/Modern is for settings in a world that is very much like our own (even if it's entirely made-up).  Alternate history RPs, steampunk (usually), ordinary high school RPs, zombie outbreaks, etc.

Futuristic is for the much more sci-fi settings.  Outer space, or technology beyond our own, that sort of thing.

These are based on setting more than anything else.  If you have elves in an otherwise modern setting, it's probably Realistic/Modern.  If you have elves on spaceships, with no magic, it's Futuristic.  Some RPs are a mix of all three, in which case you pick which one is most like your setting (not necessarily the story or characters).

There's also Fandom, which is RPs that use an already existing setting, either a published book (series), TV show, movie, etc.  Examples include Harry Potter, Pokemon, Game of Thrones.  All Fandom RPs (except 1x1s, see below) go in the Fandom section.

The other categories have more to do with mechanics.  1x1 or One on One is for RPs involving two or three players and can involve any category.

Dice is for any game, regardless of setting, that involves dice in some form, like Dungeons and Dragons.  And so on and so forth. ^_^

You should post this in Tutorials and link it whenever you want.

Thank all of you who replied so very, very much for explaining it so well. I'll be continuously looking over these replies over the next few days as I get used to the site, and memorize what goes where and what is or is not allowed.

Again, thanks. <3

Got any questions? Let me know, and I can try to help on a more case-by-case basis. Basically, if you like fandom rp's, I can try to find one you're looking for.

@Shiloh

Alright, so, now that I've looked at all the forums and such, I'm trying to decide exactly which subforum is correct.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but putting it under a subforum isn't required, is it?

What are you trying to categorize?

I'd say... Slice of life-type. One-on-one, probably long-term.

In RPN language, Realistic Or Modern roleplay.

That depends on if you'd rather it be available for everyone to view or just between you and your rp partner.

@Shiloh

i'm not exactly new to the site, but i found this quite helpful. :3

especially the roleplay classifications, as i tend to blend genres and could never figure out where things fit. now i know!
