The year is 2451, and a new dawn has risen for Humanity.
Since the discovery of ancient alien technology on the surface of Pluto in 2098, Humanity has expanded far and wide across the Orion Spur. Now spread across hundreds of terraformed worlds and split among an equal number of individual nationstates. The Human race has entered an unprecedented era of prosperity as it plunders the incalucable amount of resources that the galaxy has to offer.
Guided by the more reasonable hands of the United Nations and the great powers of Earth which too have taken to the stars to claim their fair share, Humanity has become a truly interstellar society, with conflicts few and far between and wealth plentiful. In the centuries of exploration that Humanity has conducted across the Orion Spur, tens of thousands of primitive alien flora and fauna have been discovered, although so far no species has matched the intellect of Man, and even now it appears that Man is alone in--at least--the Milky Way galaxy.
However, as men now busied themselves about their various concerns, they observed and studied, the way a man with a microscope might scrutinize the creatures that swarm and multiply in a drop of water. With infinite complacency, men went to and fro about the Orion Spur, confident of our empire over space. Yet across the gulf of the void, intellects vast and cool and unsympathetic regarded our space with envious eyes and slowly, and surely, drew their plans against us..

Nation Building - Human Dawn - 2451 - Sheets
General things to note are that all nations are Human with no deviations such as mutations or entire populations modified with technology. This is set only a few hundred years in the future and as such Humanity is not unrecognizable from a 2019 Human perspective, many cultures from today still exist as do many nations from Earth or descendents from Earth nations such as China or Australia.
Exceptions to this rule can include new cultures which have formed due to different colonist populations mixing, for example you could have a nation that was formed on a distant planet which has a culture made up of components of Finnish and Romanian cultures, or the language that they speak is a deviation from French with some influences from Spanish but it could still largely be understood by native French speakers.
As of 2451, most of the greatest powers of the Orion Spur are nations which have originated on Earth (the United States or Russia for example) due to the still comparatively new colonial nations having to catch up to the Earth powers. However there are a large number of regional powers which although not as powerful as some of the Earth superpowers, still wield extensive influence in their own parts of the Spur.
When making your nation, you should know that due to the vast resources and sheer scale of space that territory is often not something that many concern themselves over and as such many smaller nations will only ever require a single planet or system to sustain major economic or population growth. Some of the largest nations however will maintain a presence in several dozen systems and planets, the more territory you have, the less developed on average that territory will be. The less territory you have, the more densely developed that territory will be. The largest Earth-originated nations will have populations in the tens of billions or higher billions while the largest of the newer colonial nations will have populations in the low billions/high hundreds of millions, other nations will have populations in the tens of millions or lower hundreds of millions.
For those looking to make Earth-based powers, something important to note is that due to a series of treaties passed in the United Nations Parliament, all of the larger Earth powers (the ones with extensive interstellar infrastructure and a number of colony worlds) have been required to relocate their capitals off-world as to make Earth a relatively neutral ground. This does not mean Earth-based nations do not have territory on Earth, they still do, it is just that their government and military centers are located on their largest colony worlds typically. The Sol system is also designated as a DMZ, with only UN peacekeeping forces allowed a naval presence, while Mars and Luna are colonies under joint-UN control.
This is not a warfare centric RP and as such not everyone needs to be the strongest kid on the block, it is largely story focused and if conflict does break out it will rely on good will and discussion between the combatants rather than rolls or any kind of combat system of numbers.
As for technology, overall the important things to note is that although available, true artificial intelligence is heavily regulated by interstellar law and due to the power of such intelligences, are treated in a similar manner to chemical weapons or WMDs by the interstellar community with only the most powerful of nations being able to produce them without major backlash however even then, true artificial intelligence is both a rarity and kept under lock and key, for the most part, the majority of Humanity utilizes dumb AI. The name dumb AI should not fool you however as they are still incredibly intelligent and on many worlds operate both civil and military infrastructure.
Terraforming is a regular occurance and an easily accessable technology, many large private corporations offer terraforming services to both nations and independent organizations. However the quality of terraforming can vary greatly depending on the people conducting it as the technology is still widely varied between groups and there is no universal method used by all. Many of the oldest colonial nations' worlds were terraformed as part of UN or Earth power-sponsored terraforming programs, and across the Milky Way there are dozens of malformed, ugly worlds that have been created as a result of poor terraforming by rogue states or corporations looking to cut costs. This contrasts greatly to the unopposed beauty and prosperity of the best terraformed worlds elsewhere.
Two methods of Faster-Than-Light travel are generally used by Humanity, the first being wormholes which provide near-instant transportation from one spot to the other and the second being real space FTL, which simply involves a ship travelling in ordinary interstellar space at faster than the speed of light.
However the second method is by far the most widely used as wormhole transportation, although far more effective and quick, is incredibly dangerous and requires state of the art navigation technology and skillful personnel in-order to pull off flawlessly. In the first years of Human exploration of the Orion Spur, many dozens of ships were lost forever as a result of poor handling of wormhole transportation, and as such unless there is a drastic need for it, real space FTL travel is preferred by most in the galaxy.
The state of Humanity's many militaries is worth noting also. As one can expect, a nation's naval might is without a doubt the most important aspect of its military capabilities. The largest naval warships are often carriers as fighters and bombers are still largely utilized in modern naval combat while the largest warships overall are generally in the 1km range in terms of length, with the vast majority of warships across the board being in the hundreds of meters range. The largest navies in the Spur typically operate vessels numbering in the tens of thousands, while most other powers usually operate hundreds of vessels and larger, but not superpowers operate low thousands of vessels. In terms of weaponry, the preferred weapons of most ships are railgun turrets and sublight torpedos. Naval warfare always occurs in sublight speeds.
In this modern era, focus is put largely into a navy's ability to deploy and stay deployed and as such many navies will spend large portions of their budget on developing interstellar infrastructure such as space stations or auxillary vessels needed to supply fleets on deployment across the often vast gulfs of space that they will need to cross.
Due to a relatively low amount of major interstate conflict in the 25th century, many navies concentrate their efforts on anti-piracy and in the protection of shipping lanes and fleet composition may reflect that at times. Ground warfare however is not neglected and due to strict international law on orbital bombardment, human troops, tanks and other ground and atmospheric air vehicles are regularly deployed planetside in the event of war.
As for that ominous and obvious reference at the end of the RP summary, there may/will be an extragalactic threat to Humanity at some point. However that point will not be early into the RP and when/if it does occur, depending on how the RP is going, it will begin slowly and not all at once. With mysterious reports and disappearances along the edge of the galaxy for example.
