How to introduce custom code?

Roleplay Availability
Roleplay Type(s)
I'm confused. I know how to code and I'm ready to create something pretty cool for some of my plots/characters, but whenever I try the code just comes up as text. Here's what I do every time.

1. Press the 'Code' button in the comment header

2. Type in code (yes, I make sure HTML is selected if I'm using HTML and whatnot)

3. Select 'Insert into post'

After that, even when I click 'Preview' or submit the comment and then look at it, all that comes up is the text that I inputted, no actual functioning code. I've even attempted to copy/paste what others have successfully done but to no avail.

Pretty sure I'm missing something here, so... Help?

Also, sorry if this has already been posted before, but I didn't see anything similar to my question.

Also, the Code button just puts it in brackets or something (OK, I actually don't know what it does.  But it doesn't enable coding).  To do HTML, once you reach 500 posts, you'll get a Source button.  Clicking on that takes you into "HTML mode" and you can type your coding in there.  Clicking Source again takes you out of "HTML mode" and back into "regular" mode.
