How to do altered gravity?

Coatboy

The Man of Many Pockets
So the other day, I watched this anime* and had a sudden inspiration to make an rp with it's premise. Which is weird, considering I have next to none experience in roleplaying. The aforementioned premise was that people lived underground because gravity worked backwards, and there were people on the surface for whom gravity was normal. But I'm not wanting to recreate the story or make a fandom rp. I just like the idea of gravity being manipulated. But alas I'm not quite sure how to go about making that happen. At first I didn't think that a science or logic based explanation would work, instead it would have to be more... magical? er somthin.

*if anyone wants to know, it was Patema Inverted, I highly recommend it 10/10

So yeah, I was thinking maybe there could be "a thing" happen at the beginning and reverse gravity but this one guy(or a few guys) can change his personal gravity and probably save a few guys from flying away... then they go in tunnels and "do something".

But I realize there could be some soft-science in play with a newer idea, if there were two planets acting like a binary system or maybe some large moons? Something along those lines.

I really have no idea what I'm doing and probably won't ever actually decide on anything, so if anyone could help fill in some details, or suggest something better than either of these, it would really be helpful. I probably could've made this thread under Mechanics, World Building, or Plot Analysis so instead I just made it an Ideas thread because I need help with each topic.

Firstly, sounds like a cool anime. Sounds a lot like Upside Down (2012), something you should definitely check out for more inspiration if that's what you're hunting...

Now onto your actual question - altered gravity.

Depending on how you want to go about this, this is my take:

Magical prowess might use something like Demi, which affects the gravity of a certain area around a person, place, or thing. Often used as an attack to increase the gravity around a person to crush them with immense weight. FF7 uses Materia, an orb of magical power that invokes mana from the user to cast; Demi in the game takes 1/4 of life from an opponent, which would never technically kill someone as it's always 25% of the current life status.

Anime would be something like Guyver, who uses Gravitons to alter the flow of gravity, increasing or decreasing it around them. The cause is for enhanced speed, essentially something akin to a Haste, but without the use of time-based magics. This also offers the ability to lift, rise, and potentially fly, if you have extraneous abilities to propel yourself once you're afloat.

Another caveat to this realm of thought is genetic-testing, -enhancement, or -innate (born with) to say that, like Magneto, you can control the magnetic fields of the world around you which you reside within, and therefore can manipulate the magnetic field you are within to float, fly, levitate, etc...

Thoughts?

I hope this helps. :)
