For his first five years at Hogwarts, Neville was a shy and forgetful boy who often tripped over his own feet and stuttered a lot. He was horrible at Potions but excelled in Herbology, happy to help Professor Sprout in the greenhouses during his spare time. To Neville, gardening was relaxing and he showed a true talent for the class, having a green thumb. Even Harry once remarked that the plants seemed to respond under Neville's gentle care and touch.
As a child underneath the raising of his paternal grandmother, Neville was afraid of her and feared her becoming his boggart in his third year. Neville showed remarkable bravery in his first year when he tried to stop the Golden Trio from leaving Gryffindor Tower, getting petrified in the process by Hermione Granger when they were trying to stop the Sorcerer's Stone from being stolen. But the years of being bullied by his aunt and uncle had taken their toll on the young boy and it wasn't until the Battle at the Department of Mysteries towards the end of his fifth year that Neville's bravery, confidence and rise in self-esteem began to grow from his shell.
The happiest days of Neville's life were when he married Hannah Abbott, a former Hufflepuff in his year, and the day that he was made godfather of Albus Severus Potter. Albus is a loyal friend and an excellent gardener, having worked in the greenhouses at his father's manor as a child which was a way for Albus to escape the demands of his grandmother. Although Augusta finally told Neville that he would make his father proud, he never developed a close relationship with the woman due to the years of neglect and emotional abuse, never speaking of his childhood to anyone except briefly in his Hogwarts years as a student. Neville is very protective of his family and still goes to see his parents during the Christmas and Easter holidays, now bringing his wife Hannah with him for companionship and support. He is very loyal to his friends and family and will protect them with every fiber in his body to ensure no harm comes to them. He still loves to garden and can often be found at Hogwarts in the greenhouses when outside of class. Neville is the only adult in Albus's life that knows he is a Parslemouth and doesn't shun him for it.
Background:
Neville was born on June 30, 1980 to Aurors Frank and Alice Longbottom. He was one of two children of a prophecy pertaining to Voldemort, together with his good friend Harry Potter. After Voldemort was defeated, Neville's parents were attacked by the Lestranges and Barty Crouch Jr. who tortured his parents until their minds snapped with the Cruciatus Curse, rendering them in St. Mungo's and Neville forced to grow up with his stern paternal grandmother, Augusta Longbottom. As Heir to the Longbottom family, Neville didn't get a lot of chances to make friends with others his age and as a child was never good enough for his grandmother. For years, it was thought that Neville was a squib, prompting numerous times when his Great Uncle Algie attempted to harm him in order to force out his magic. Although he did show signs of faint magic in his early years, his grandmother and uncle persistently missed those signs, including the midwife who tended to his mother after his birth. Growing up with a stern and formidable woman in her own right, Neville was often emotionally abused by his grandmother and constantly compared to his father Frank with hardly any mentions of his mother Alice. Sometime in his early years, he witnessed his grandfather's death and as a child went to St. Mungo's often with his grandmother to see his parents, though they did not recognize him at all. Despite this, his mother always gave him bubblegum wrappers and Neville kept them with him.
At eight years old, Neville was dropped from the second story window of Longbottom Manor by his Great Uncle Algie who hung him out the window to invoke his magic. Neville survived the fall which made his grandmother happy. At eleven, instead of getting a wand from Ollivander's, Albus was given his father's wand by his grandmother and a toad from his Great Uncle Algie. When he got to Hogwarts, he was sorted into Gryffindor, despite his reservations about being brave enough for that house, however the shy stuttering boy vanished after the Duel in the Department of Mysteries at the end of his fifth year, making it the only time that his grandmother was ever proud of her grandson up until that point in his life and for once didn't see Neville as a failure to House Longbottom and his parents. During his seventh year when Professor Snape was the Headmaster, Neville led the resistance against the Carrows and Jr. Death Eaters at Hogwarts while the Golden Trio hunted down Horcruxes. After Harry Potter decided to end it all in the fight with Voldemort, he was tasked with killing Voldemort's snake familiar which he did, ending one of the last Horcruxes and allowing Harry to finish Voldemort for good.
Upon graduating Hogwarts, Neville became an Auror for a short time where his dueling and transfiguration improved under the training he received in the Auror Academy. Sometime before James Potter started Hogwarts, Neville took up the position of Herbology Professor after apprenticing underneath Professor Sprout (former head of Hufflepuff and ex-Herbology Professor), taking over the position after she retired. By 2014, Neville had married Hannah Abbott and when Albus Potter was born, was made Albus's godfather by Harry.
