The Thing From Space
The OOC thread for our journey through an urban fantasy setting where martial arts meets mythology. Feel free to brainstorm ideas or just chat!

Right, with folks showing interest, I'll give some recommended reading/viewing. Kung-Fu Hustle, Outlaws of the Marsh/Water Margin, anything by Pili, anything by Jin Yong (but especially Condor Heroes), G Gundam... I'm definitely missing some, but these are generally the most accessible.

So,two questions.

In terms of region,is this going to be mainly a dungeon crawl? As in,we'll mainly be exploring/fighting in the tomb-complex/mausoleum.

Second of all,my initial character concept was a young human who got possessed via an artifact by an ancestor who was a powerful (non-Chinese) cultivator in antiquity. They exercise their power by taking the ancestor's likeness in a sort of magical girl transformation and have been spending some time protecting their hometown as a sort of superhero/xiake before heeding the call to Hong Kong.

Do you think that would fit?

The tomb complex is just a general starter to get people introduced to one another- afterward I was planning to just let people knock around the world doing standard fantasy kung-fu stuff.

Yeah, magical girl transformation seems fine. Does the artifact talk when she's not transformed like a magical girl mascot?

I was thinking about the ancestor's persona mainly talking to them in their head when not transformed, but having the ancestor pipe up audibly sometimes might lead to some interesting/funny moments.

Hi!

Are you still accepting new apps? And what kinda folklore limits can our charries use? Do they all have to be real world legends or AU made up ones all goods?

Well,my character was going to be from a fictional country but drawing on Egyptian and Hittite mythology

Well, I'd need to see your specific example, but the guy I'm thinking of owns the last Circuit City in Florida and makes magic artifacts.

is there a discord for this game? right now i'm considering an old char concept I had for a swordsman who has no sword

Hello! I got possessed by the spirit of insomnia and made a CS. The TLDR is that they were part of a sect that joined in on the imperial purges but on the side of the empire. Because they were pro-murder pro-rights for normal humans. Also said sect had 'anti-magic' that was useful in the purges actually succeeding. My character basically being the only member of that sect still around and suffering from some mild immortality angst.

Alright, Nell, That Which Should Be, Stars Above, I'll approve y'all's. But we might have to tone down the power dampening since that can get out of hand real fast.

Draco Nightshade... well, maybe give it a go when you're feeling up to it.

Yep, that's fair. Any particular suggestions with what I should do? I was thinking possibly making void breathing strictly defensive with just the added resistance to mental attacks/curses/etc and/or maybe just keeping the unnerving aura that makes it harder to focus, because that is easy to ignore. Possibly making it so you can't void step whilst void breathing? As for the Breath Injunction Palm Strike Technique (I do like how extra I made the name), I am not sure what to do with it. I am mostly just imagining using it as a finishing move anyway, so if Xinyi is going to win the fight they'll successfully use it, otherwise they won't.

Diving into this both feet first like a dropkick and thinking I'll try for a modern day man with no name sort, someone who came from nothing and built himself up in the fight, no grand sect, no supreme master, no secret manuals or elixirs, no divine providence. Just a focus on martial arts, probably of the hard, external sort, self-development and attainment through physicality rather than mysticism.

This rp looks very interesting. I like both Wuxia and urban fantasy, so I think this will be fun.

I've got in mind a chef/southern style kung fu themed cultivator - possibly something of an herbalist. Pulling from the concept of achieving longevity/power through eating certain ingredients, I'll probably explore the idea that these abilities can be enhanced through the proper preparation (e.g. cooking or fermenting). Hopefully that fits in with the concept, but let me know if there's anything that needs changing.

To be honest, that's kind of exactly what I was shooting for with the "more laid-back cultivators" that survived purges. More sustainable things like farming/ranching your magic ingredients for the neidan.

This seems like a really fun setting! I’m thinking of a character that is either a painter or a bartender in some fancy night club for high class folk? Idk. I was thinking their cultivation could be mixed in with their profession, with it either being some kind of drunken master / potion making focus. Or for the painter, maybe it would be being able to use paint like a venom symbiote? Idk

You could fuse the ideas of nightclub fixture and artistry and run a musician too. Room for both support and active combat skills, lots of variety and different styles and instruments to pick from that can suit different personalities. Painter could be a more traditional spellcaster making painted talismans on the spot, or a summons guy as he works on his inkwash masterpiece set that comes to life in increasingly real ways as his skill improves?

Ooooh I like those ideas a lot- I’ll definitely think about that when making my character, thanks!

Another thing could be that you've started incorporate art techniques based on 'digital' art as well- the ability to copy-paste, blur, and so on.
