The benefit was nearing the end of the night, people were beginning to head to various afterparties or back to their homes. Druella of course was still present, though finally she had finished making her rounds and found herself sipping on an overfilled glass of merlot in a fairly secluded corner with her fiancé and future sister-in-law. The benefit was hosted by her family, though it was more an excuse for her father to campaign and schmooze than anything. Most of these people disgusted Dru, she loved politics and success but didn't share her father or his little friends view on most things. Unfortunately it was something she has to simply accept if she ever wanted to be someone someday. Thankfully this, in the end of it all, was indeed a benefit for the school, thus the alumni and staff had to be invited. That meant a lot of the pureblood supremacists couldn't be as openly disgusting as they normally were.
It was an upscale event, as were most that she attended. Held at the manor in their families' large ballroom. Lots of marble and velvet, formal cocktail attire required, fancy food and servers with champagne and wine at every turn. Dru herself attended in a strapless red cocktail dress adorned with various cuts of fabric to make the whole thing look like structured flower petals. On her feet she wore red velvet heels and she accessorized with some red rose earrings and a simple makeup look consisting of red lipstick and black cat-eyeliner. Her raven colored hair was worn down in loose waves reaching her chin.
"If one more person asks me how wedding planning is going I might scream." Dru signed and took a long drink before setting the glass on a nearby table and reaching down to carefully adjust her dress. Larkyn and Dru had been engaged forever, but recently the two of them finally set a date for the big day. As a woman it seemed as soon as you did that, that was all you were allowed to talk about. Flowers, dresses, venues, cake.... BLEH. It was so OLD so quick. Suddenly it was like no one wanted to talk to her about policy or real issues. Only what time of day she wanted for her ceremony. As if all this shit wasn't being planned by their mothers since the day the two of them were 5 years old.
"What about you? How has your night been?" Dru wrapped her arm through Larkryn's, looking up at him with a genuine smile. Honestly she was one of the only people on this planet she could honestly tolerate. And one of the only people who could tolerate her, she wasn't stupid, Dru knew she was a lot for most people. Hell even right now she was getting major resting bitch face from her fiance's sister.
With probably her millionth sigh of the evening Loire found herself finishing off the glass of wine in her hand. Events like these were not her forte, events in general weren't her forte but especially ritzy upscale events. Was she used to them? Yes, she had attended hundreds with her brother, her father, or both. That didn't mean she liked them. "Remind me why I'm here again? Like, I get it, Dru's your girl. But I have term papers I could be grading, or literally anything other than this. And shouldn't you be socializing with her?" Loire sat the glass down with a small glance over at her brother. The man was everything she wasn't and her other half at the same time, they were both fairly serious people but in different ways. Larkyn had social skills, Loire had ... well, she had skills mostly for a fight, or to prank someone.
The conversation was cut short when Dru showed up and started complaining. For some reason the girl had always left a bad taste in her mouth, be it her attitude or just the fact that she was engaged and going to take her brother away from her. Loire didn't necessarily dislike the girl, but she didn't exactly like her. Hence why she was getting Loire's typical resting bitch face. "Boy, you're really making me look forward to setting a date on mine." With that said the 4'11" petite female stood from her chair with a long yawn. She smoothed out her black velvet dress with lace sleeves and look a long look over the remaining attendees of the benefit. "On that note, I'm headed home. Whether you stay late is up to you or not, but don't you work tomorrow?" Loire looked back over at her brother as she picked up her black clutch.
Just as her sparkly combat boots began to carry the snowy white maned woman to the door the lights began to go out one by one. "Oh, just fabulous." With another sigh Loire instinctually pulled her ornate black wand out of the side of her boot, just in time for the room to become pitch black. Guess she wasn't going home quite yet. Slowly Loire began to make her way to a nearby wall, but just as she did the wall started to light up with flames. It was flames etching something into the wall and it took her a minute to process what was happening. That was the wall with all the of the donated artwork on it, all of the artwork that was sold for the benefit.
"Are you kidding me?" Loire could make out the form of a person with a wand and she could only assume it was the prankster. "What in the Hell are you doing?" Quickly she approached and pointed her wand towards the wand wielding individual in attempts to get them to stop burning the art, only she froze when she got closer. Was that who she thought it was? "Cyrus?" The light from the fire had light up his face, there was no denying who she was seeing. "Seriously, what the Hell?"
"All right Dixie, I think I'm calling it a night. This has been great catching up, and I encourage you to come visit me in New York. I have to head home tomorrow though, the life of a Secretary never rests you know?" The confident red headed woman gave the blonde fellow Alumni a warm smile. Dixie was one of the only people that understood her problems when she was attending the school. Truth be told the woman was more like a sibling to her than a fellow Alum, unfortunately they hardly got to see each other. Letters that the owls brought her, sure, but that was different than seeing each other in person. They just lived in two different worlds now, and quite literally so. Initially she wasn't planning on coming but it wasn't every day that she was able to cross over, she was scared of magic. It made her wish that she could stay in this world, to be able to use magic every day.
That just wasn't her reality. Sapphira loved her family, she wanted them to be proud of her. That's why she stayed in the human world. Sapphira stood from the table and gave Dixie a tight hug, however once she turned to leave the lights began to flicker out. Goosebumps ran up her arms and she took a step back towards the table. Was Sapphira a gifted mage in school, yes. Did she want to fight or defend herself? No, she hardly ever used her magic anymore, she wasn't sure if she still even knew how. Quickly she reached into the green velvet clutch that matched her spaghetti strapped dress and pulled out her wand. Just for protection, just in case.
"Dixie is this supposed to be happening?" Then flames started engraving something into the wall of paintings and Sapphira felt her heart drop. Oh, shit. This was going to become a crime scene and she did not need to be involved with any magic law enforcement. "Oh, hell no. We'll stay over here and they'll find that we didn't do anything wrong. It's fine." Quickly Sapphira waved her wand and watched as every candle quickly relit to room.
"So you just burn those words into the wall, we get out, and you'll get paid. Just don't get caught, 'kay?" Ah, Hunter, he missed his true calling of a motivational speaking. Those were the last words the 6'0" man with shaggy hair, previously known as Drake, spoke to his partner in crime for the night before adjusting his tie and moving in to the large room. Cyrus was the one he was recommended for the job, something about his skills being top notch, blah, blah, blah. Listen, he was available and Hunter had cash. A little fire magic and they had perfect harmony. Hunter provided Cyrus the uniform they'd wear to dress as staff, they'd sneak in, and boom that was their ticket in.
Everything was riding on this moment. Several powerful purebloods were there, fuck, his family was there earlier. Thankfully the old bastards probably went home to crash, only a few stragglers remained but that was the best time to do it. As Hunter entered the large ballroom he held out his wand and watched as the lights went out one by one. There was no wind involved, no water, it was just as if darkness completely took over the light. Adrenaline started pumping as he knew that they needed to work fast. They each had their own two words to burn into the nearby wall, and the words were ... ah, well does that even matter? It was almost as soon as they were finished did the fire overwhelm his darkness, bringing light back into the room and exposing the pair with their wands out.
He knew what he was burning, but he hadn't anticipated someone overwhelming his magic so easily. Maybe he was losing his touch? No, no. It couldn't be. "Well, seems we're at an impasse here." Hunter took a millisecond to calculate a perfect response to this in his head. There had to be a way out of being arrested. "Now who would have done this? Surely you won't blame us solely for responsibilities, these others had their wands out too. Couldn't it have been them to carve into this wall? Who's to say they're innocent based on that status?" Hunter proposed his conundrum and analyzed everyone in the room. Several of them had their wands out, and if Hunter played his cards right they were all go down for this. The punishment was far less extreme if put off on eight people versus two ... and it gave Hunter some time to work on his escape.
Two of those people he knew very well, but he was sure they'd forgive him eventually.
"No, no. Mon Ange, thank you for allowing me to spend the night with a lady like you. Truly, you are breathtaking." It was time for them to excuse themselves, and though Terran hadn't known this woman before tonight he was a gentleman and he'd escort her home. It was only proper of him. However, some of the things the man had done in the past wasn't so proper, he knew that. Terran didn't like the idea of relationships, he had always laid it out when he first knows a woman. He was kind, thoughtful, strong, basically the perfect boyfriend. Only, he was scared to be a boyfriend. He enjoyed his bachelor freedom and had never found anything to make him want to anchor down. Thankfully this woman seemed fine with it, although so did a few others in the past. Those didn't pan out quite well. Especially the one with one of the Arville girls. Hey, as long as they didn't see him there he'd be fine. Right? He ran a large hand through his dark brown hair that fell just below his shoulders.
Just as Terran stood to his full 6'2" height and smoothed out the light blue suit that hugged his toned body before offering the woman (June...Jean? Jane. Something like that?) a hand to stand the lights were snuffed out. Some people went in a panic and started rushing for the door, and though Terran stood strong against the few people running through a blonde woman nearby didn't. As someone rushed passed her she flew to the ground, and Terran reacted just on instincts alone. He whipped the wand from the pocket of his suit and pointed it towards the woman. A soft, lush bed of flowers sprouted underneath her and cushioned her fall.
The lights quickly came back thankfully and Terran quickly rushed to the woman that had fallen, though he blinked widely a few times as someone began to point out everyone who had their wand out. Did someone suspect him? No, he was saving the lady.”Miss, are you OK?” He gave her a gentle smile as he offered his hand to help her up. He looked back slightly to the gentleman accusing him with a small sigh. "Moi? Non, no, nein. It wasn't me sir." What a precarious situation they were in. Surely he wouldn't get in trouble for saving someone?
It was nice to get out every now and again, meet up and spend time with people who weren’t coworkers, students…plants. That and going to this benefit allowed her to catch up with Serapphina! The two of them kept touch via letters and such but it was so much different than how things were back when they were in school. Dixie had always wished that the red haired woman had stayed on as staff as well, she would have been an amazing educator. But she also understood how strong the pull of family could be, even with hers being as dysfunctional as it was.
Ever since graduation Dixie had stayed at the school, taking on the role of herbology professor assistant and eventually the professor role entirely when her predecessor retired. It was rare for her to leave the grounds let alone go home to Georgia, though one might think she made frequent visits with how heavy her accent still was after however many years. The woman didn’t have a lot of friends, pretty much Serapphina and some of her coworkers if one could consider them friends. Despite that she was still always chipper and nice, seeing the hood in everything as much as she could.
“Well I sure will miss you again. It was so nice to have you come over and visit. Are you sure I can’t convince you to stay?” The blonde woman drawled as she spoke and gave her friend a smile, a sad smile but still. Dixie pulled the girl into a quick hug, prepared to say their goodbyes for the evening but just as she let go the room around them began to go dark. “What the heck ?” She turned around slowly, distracted by staring at all the sconces as they went out one by one like they were being snuffed out by some invisible force. “Uh no, this was NOT on the itinerary.”
Just then people began running, quickly leaving the ballroom due to the strange occurrence. Dixie on the other hand, was still looking around trying to find the cause of the darkness. Blindly she reached for her wand in the pocket of her floral satin dress. However the moment she pulled it out she felt someone run into her, knocking her off balance. Dixie prepared for the pain of a hard floor to meet her but it never came, instead she felt herself fall onto what felt like grass and soon she was surrounded by the sweet scent of flowers. “What in tarnation?”
The lights came back on and Dixie found herself staring at the ceiling for a moment before a gorgeous man came into view. Had she died? Flowers? Handsome men? Was this the heaven she didn’t believe in? “Oh shoot, I’m just dandy sugar.” She chuckled and reached up to take his hand, pulling herself up as another voice began speaking across the room.
Dixie turned her attention to the voice and found herself looking at a burned up wall of art. It made her let out a gasp. It sounded like this guy was going to try and pin something on everyone in the room! “Excuse me sir but I know damn well you aren’t trynn’a say any of us could have done something so awful!”
These type of events were mostly just a chore for Larkyn, whether it was to be his parents accessory or his fiancés. That meant most of his time was spent walking around making small talk or finding a quiet corner to hide in, thus why he normally forced his twin to join him despite her clear disdain for the events. "You're here because I would be terribly bored without someone else here with me. Plus it IS a benefit for YOUR school. You probably should have attempted to make an appearance even without me badgering you." He smirked over at his much shorter half. The twins were like complete opposites while also being the same? Loire was short, Larkyn was tall. Larkyn was serious as was Loire but they both has different talents within that space. On the outside a lot of people thought they were very different but when it really boiled down to it, they weren't that different at all. "I've done my fair share of socializing with her tonight. Plus her father is dragging her around like a puppet yet again."
Larkyn loved Druella. Truly. At this point she was family, his best friend, his fiancé. He loved her. But the idea of marrying her was still hard for him to accept despite it being a known fact since an very early age. Anyone could ask him if he loved her and he could say yes no issue, no lie. It was just, something felt wrong. Something felt different than what he thought a marriage should be. Though he supposed in his family and their circles he should be overjoyed that he at least liked his fiancé. Getting married for politics was all too common within the pure-blood circles. That was what this was too but... again. At least he liked her.
"Speak of the devil." As Dru joined them and wrapped her arm through his he gave her a smile, looking down at her and giving a slight chuckle. "You should tell them that. It sure would mortify the ladies of high society." Just as Dru asked how his night was going, the lights began to go out and he adjusted so his arm was around her shoulders, pulling her in close. His other hand reached into the pocket of his navy blue suit, producing a wand and holding it out slightly in front of himself in case anything started to go awry.
The wall across from them all began to light up in flames, if he was quicker on his feet he would have began to put it out the moment it started but honestly he was so shocked he couldn’t move. Who the hell was doing this? There wasn’t even a fire user in the damn room when the lights went out to his knowledge! Larkyn finally got ahold of himself and mumbled a spell, a large bubble of water erupting from the top of his wand and splashing into the wall. It stopped the fire from spreading at least but once the lights came back on he noticed the damage had already been done.
That wasn’t all he noticed. He also noticed Hunter. “What in the hell are you doing here?” Larkyn and the guy used to be friends, but Hunters actions made it hard as of recent. The man had been missing for a while now too, that didn’t help. And now this was how he made his grand return?
“Yes Hunter, I heard you the first five times you explained this extremely simple plan.” Cyrus rolled his eyes and huffed at his current boss. Not really a boss. But the guy was paying him so Cyrus would grin and bear it. After their short interaction the two men made their way into the over the top event and began their night of playing pretend. The two of them would spend the night walking around and blending in with the staff. Then once it was safe to do so, they would find their chosen spot for the message and enact Hunter’s plan. Cyrus himself felt kind of gross doing something like this at a benefit for the school, but he supposed he could understand the reason. The school was for everyone, not just the rich purebloods invited here tonight.
Ever since his mother passed, Cyrus found himself constantly in situations like this. His father had turned to a life of alcohol and sleep for comfort, which meant Cyrus had to pay all their bills and keep them fed. For a while he attempted making a honest living but it was hard for a young kid still in school. So then he expanded to modifying report cards and test grades, faking letters home and sneaking in outside snacks and candy from a nearby village. Soon though that wasn’t enough, so he started taking on some more questionable tasks for money, then worse and worse. Eventually they were just full on crimes. At one point Cyrus had a bright future, he was excelling at school and was on track to graduate and go into auror training. However once he got to that point, he couldn’t handle both and life caught up to him. Eventually he had to let his dreams go and simply focus on doing whatever it took to survive.
The night slowed down and it was finally time. Cyrus looked around expecting to see Hunter despite knowing that he wouldn’t. Especially since before he knew it the toon was nearly pitch black. Cyrus made quick work of his job, pulling his wand from his pocket and beginning to burn the words into the wall housing all the donated art pieces. Thankfully both Hunter and himself were talented and were able to move fairly quickly because within a few moments the lights were back on and they were standing in a room full of other witches and wizards with their wands out.
Dru found herself leaning into Larkyn slightly, at this point she was just ready to head back to their part of the manor and have a relaxing rest of the evening. Apparently that wasn’t in the cards though because as soon as Loire went to leave and Dru went to tell Larkyn they could head out as well. The lights went out. Dru knew the layout of this stupid event inside and out, there was nothing like this that was supposed to happen and whatever was causing the blackness was clearly magic related. It was only this room that was affected, she could still see the slivers of light coming from other areas but even those were nearly snuffed out.
Besides her Dru felt Larkyn shift to presumably pull out his wand, clearly noticing that something was amiss as well. So she followed suit, keeping hers pointed down towards the floor but ready if need be. Though she wasn’t really sure what she would do, it was fairly rare for her to use magic in public due to fear that anyone would catch on to her secret. Thankfully the time didn’t come for her to use her wand at all, the room went dark, fire began, fire stopped, lights came on. It all happened so fast that by the time she actually processed it, Larkyn had already done what was needed to keep any fires from spreading.
“Oh my!” Dru gasped the moment her eyes fell on the wall. Nearly all of the art was ruined, some curtained singed and left behind were the charred words reading “La Sorcellerie is for all.” It was a bittersweet feeling churning inside of Dru the moment she read those words. She knew what it meant. She wasn’t naive to the message, hell it was even one she believed in. But this wasn’t the way to do it!
Across the room a man began speaking, Loire was also questioning another one. Neither of them were people Dru recognized and she was DAMN sure they weren’t invited. Especially when she caught on to what the shaggy haired one was saying. “Excuse ME?” Dru sputtered, honestly in disbelief. Besides her Larkyn spoke up and she turned to him with wide eyes, “Do you know this miscreant?!”
Loire was a fucking livid cupcake with confused icing on top. Why was everyone getting sucked into this shit when they didn’t do it? It was so obvious who was at fault here! If it wasn’t for Dru’s father then they would have been arrested. Now they just sat there waiting to be told their punishment like they were in fucking school all over again. And, and, and not to mention the fact that Cyrus just popped in with her missing fiancé to cause ALL of these issues? Who did she hit first? Who was she more angry at?
Cyrus. He had hurt her heart when he cut off contact with the siblings. Her brother was hurt and that she could tell, Cyrus was his best friend. In all of that he became a good friend to her as well. So when he left it was like a punch to the gut. She wrote him probably a good stack of letters over the course of the two years and received not one response. She worried he died, worried he was mixed up with the wrong people. Everyday she worried for him and he didn’t give the siblings the time of day. Hunter was just a fucking idiot sometimes, she didn’t care what he did truth be told.
“You finally show back up and THIS is what you’re doing? Do you have any idea how worried we were? And I was right! You’re doing something fucking stupid!” Loire was someone her family expected to be a sweet, kind woman. In all reality she was a blunt, serious person who didn’t show emotions well. Right now she didn’t know whether she should cry or to scream. Instead she walked up to him and threw a punch into Cyrus’s arm with all her might, though not very strong. Her strengths were less physical and more magical, lucky for his arm. “And you didn’t write me back, not even once! I thought we were friends.”
—
It wasn’t long after she punched Cyrus when the Dru’s dad walked in with a heavy sigh. Oh, great. “You lot have found yourself in quite the mess, you owe me a great deal of gratitude for saving your tails. The money for the art has been returned, but I will compensate for the loss of revenue to the school. In return you all shall find yourself useful to the school, and generously I’m only asking for a measly year of your time. All things considering some of you would be serving much more time in prison, and you may do so if you wish not to serve the school in any manner that is asked of you.” The tall older man cleared his throat, crossed his arms, and looked over the youngsters in his study. “Larkyn I’m aware of how busy you are, but I’ve always expected great things out of you. I’m sure you’ll manage to find the time for this. Druella, I expect you’ll make me proud. The headmaster has agreed to give you all your assignments tomorrow. Drake, this is a personal favor for your parents not to lock you up and lock away the key.”
“But…I already work there.” And so did Dixie… how on earth was this a punishment?
What in the world had happened? Sapphira knew she should have left earlier, but she wanted just a few more minutes with her dear friend. Now they were both in deep trouble for no good reason! Dixie didn’t get hurt when she fell, but that was the only good thing that happened during that whole event. The white haired girl, Loire? She was pissed, and honestly Sapphira understood. Thankfully the host of the event begrudgingly assisted the lot of them and told them to wait in the study. So, there all of them were waiting on pins and needles.
Sapphira was patiently sitting on one of the plush couches in the study and it made her reminisce on her own fathers at home. Lots of books, no style, and she even spotted a decanter of bourbon on the desk. Guess rich businessmen were all the same deep down, magic or not. “What’s the likely hood of me getting out so I don’t miss my flight in the morning?” A nervous giggle came from her as she looked over at Dru and Larkyn. She wasn’t familiar with the pair at all but they seemed to be the most mature, like they knew what would be going on.
Soon enough the man was coming back in looking anything but pleased. Once again, why were they getting in trouble? Sure they all had their wands, but was that really a crime? “A whole year?” Her heart instantly sunk. There was no cell service here, she’d have to send her father a fucking letter telling him she’d be gone. The already pale woman went white as a ghost, her heart sinking in her stomach. “Here. For a year.” She wasn’t arguing, she’d do anything to stay out of trouble with the law, but this? “I, uh, guess you’re stuck with me for a little longer Dixie.”
“Just dandy sugar.” The woman had spoke in tongues, that and her accent made him concern about head trauma. At least at first, No one seemed phased by the way she spoke, she moved fine, maybe that was just how to woman talked? It was very…peculiar. However, he didn’t have time to address anything further. Soon the eight of them were being rescued by security and sent to a study to wait. Terran hadn’t done anything wrong, nobody but those two men did! This was injustice at its finest. Was it payback for what happened between Terran and the man’s daughter or was it just a coincidence?
Terran was resting in a large chair looking over a history book to pass the time, there was no use panicking. Whatever happened happened and they’d have to deal with it. It wasn’t worth getting upset and hitting someone, even if they deserved it. “Miss.” He quickly closed the book before he decided to address the blonde woman he had saved. “That accent, it’s American, no? Southern North America, yes? I have yet to hear it before. It’s interesting.”
The conversation however was cut short when the host of the event joined them. He didn’t exactly bring great news, but it wasn’t completely terrible. At least, not to Terran. He lived his life on a whim and he often traveled abroad, he liked to backpack and travel. Maybe it’d be nice to settle down for a year? “A year isn’t that long, and it doesn’t sound too bad. Sure, I’ll do it.” Jail was not in his cards, he would do whatever he could to avoid it.
What was everyone so bent up about? It was their fault they had their wands pulled out, that’s on them! Thankfully it seemed like that was useful to the two men, they avoided security and ushered to a study to await their punishment. This lot of purebloods? Slap on the wrist, easy. “Listen, Larkyn. I’ve been gone how long? This is what I do. I’m bringing light the injustice of our society and I won’t rest until we reform our system. Simple, right? I’m so sick and tired of the way we get pampered, none of us have to work for anything and it diminishes true talents.” Hunter was sitting on the desk with a small smirk as he addressed his brother in law. Sure, everyone here was super pissed about what happened. Great thing about Hunter was, he didn’t fucking care. The point got across and that was what he wanted.
“Oi Oi Oi, wife, you’re not supposed to hit my accomplice. What, do you guys know each other or something? Sit down and be a good girl, yeah? We’ll get to go home in a few I’m sure.” With that said he did a one over of the room and noticed the dark haired girl giving him a dirty look. “Hey princess, sorry I ruined your day. If you keep making that face though it’ll wrinkle. Wouldn’t want crows feet before you’re thirty.”
Then the guy who bailed them out came into the room. His parents were friends, he had seen the man around on occasion but he didn’t care to ask who he was. He didn’t care until the punishment was dished out. “The school, huh? Sure. Put me in charge of a class, I’m sure I wouldn’t say anything inappropriate at all.” Hunters long body stretched out as he yawned. The school was the perfect stomping ground for him, and he was sure that he’d be able to do his work after school hours. “Say what now?” The color on his face drained. He got ahold of his parents? Oh, shit. He did not want to be dragged back to the family. “Family. Great. Love that for me. Thanks old man.”
This was completely and totally unfair and unjust. As soon as their group was ushered off into the study, Dru had planned on chasing down her father and explaining the situation. However Larkyn held her back, explaining it wouldn’t matter and would probably only piss the man off more. Dru knew he wasn’t wrong but still! How could be really think herself or Larkyn had anything to do with this! Hell even Loire! It made zero sense that either of them would pull a stunt like that. Plus it was CLEARLY this Hunter character and his red haired little side kick! They weren’t even hiding it at this point!
While they waited, Dru and Larkyn leaned against one of the large leather couches in her fathers study. She stayed silent, watching the different personalities in the room interact. Loire was getting emotional towards the red haired boy, the teacher from the states was speaking to Terran who was making himself awfully comfortable considering he shouldn’t even have stepped foot in this home, and then there was Hunter. Drake. Whatever his name. There was a lot to unpack there.
To start, he clearly knew both Larkyn and Loire. Hell he was even calling Loire wife? We’re they engaged? Married? Dru knew that Loire supposedly had an arraignment just like her twin but never knew who. Next was the boasting he was doing about his little show he put on in the other room. Dru understood what he was saying, even agreed. But that wasn’t the way to do it. She was about to speak up when the word princess reached her ears and she felt her mood turn even more sour than it already was.
“My god all 3 of your brain cells must be working overtime to make you so witty. Drake.” Dru fake laughed as she spoke to the man, her eyebrow raising as she continued, “I mean that has to be why right? They’re too busy coming up with fun little anecdotes instead of legitimate good ideas for protests? That must be the only reason you felt it was a bright idea to burn all the profit the school was going to receive. Note taken. Step one, get message across. Step two, instantly fuck over resources that would have helped. Got it.”
Just as she finished Dru head the door open and she whipped her head around to see. It was her father. It entered the room and it felt 20 degrees colder, it only got worse when he started speaking. Dru opened her mouth to protest but he gave her a look that screamed she needed to shut up. Why was she in trouble for this?! Loire was first to speak, mentioning that her and Dixie already worked at the school and Dru pursed her lips slightly. Looks like they were getting off free basically. Her father brought up Larkyn and herself next, it was clear there was nothing she could do so she simply nodded. The red haired woman seemed distraught about it all but Terran acted aloof as per usual. It was Hunters reaction that surprised her the most. The man actually went pale in the face at the mention of his family and it made a small smirk cross her face.
Her father beckoned her over as he prepared to leave the room, speaking lowly as Dru made her way to him. The scolding of her life came next, he was always so talented at making her feel small. He ended their quick conversation with some added information and then left. Dru turned and shook away the self doubt, addressing the group instead while trying to ignore her fathers lashing. “We will take the ferry to the school tomorrow, anyone who needs lodging over night is welcome to stay here in one of the guest rooms. If anyone needs transport to a home or shop for supplies we can arrange that as well.”
Now how in the heck did she end up caught up in this mess? Not once in her life had she ever been the type of girl to get into trouble, she was a good girl. Nice, kind, polite. Even when some of her friends used to do some mean things to other girls she would apologize on their behalf. Now she was in danger of being implicated in a crime? It made her want to cry! It didn’t help that poor Sapphira was mixed up too! All she was doing was visiting a friend, it made Dixie feel so guilty.
“Hmm?” Dixie was pulled out of her internal monologue when a voice besides her spoke up. She had been pacing slightly around the study they were taken to wait in and found herself standing near the gentleman who had helped her up earlier. “Ah yes, good catch! You must be French? A lot of students come from there, the accent is hard to miss.” She gave the man a gentle smile, one that fell when the door behind them opened and a stern looking man walked in. Dixie recognized him instantly as the host, he was a hard man to miss honestly. He had a very demanding presence.
Their “punishment” nearly made Dixie laugh, even more so when Loire spoke up. It wasn’t until she heard Sapphria’s broken voice chime in that she realized that this could be really detrimental to some lives involved. Dixie moved to her friend and gave her a gentle pat on the shoulder. “It’ll all be fine sweetie. It’s better than the alternative right?” She knew how hard it would be to not get back to her family and her job but it was better than facing jail time. “You can bunk with me! Just like school all over again. Only with jobs, and lots of kids to deal with, and more responsibilities.” Maybe she wasn’t the best at this cheering up thing sometimes.
A few minutes later Dru spoke up and let them all know they were welcome to stay. Dixie had been planning to take the last boat back but at this point it was far past the time. “Thanks! I might just take you up on that.” She turned to look at Sapphria again, “Let’s just get some sleep and maybe before we have to get on the ferry we can go add some essentials to your suitcase.”
How did he explain to his future wife that he not only knew these two idiots but that they used to be some of his best friends before they both basically fell off the face of the earth? Oh and that one of them was his sisters finance? It’s not like they were all starting off on the best foot. Honestly years ago Larkyn would have said Cyrus would be his best man in the wedding! Even now despite how many years it had been he was still his best friend besides his fiancé and his sister. Which was sad as hell when it was put into words. Thankfully he was saved by the bell from Drus questioning. Unfortunately that bell was being accused of a crime and whisked away to another room while Drus father attempted to cover up this whole mess.
While they all waited in the study there was a bit of conversation happening. Larkyn had tuned into Loire and Cyrus at first, sighing as he watched his sister punch the man. “Normally I’d scold her and tell her she can’t just hit things to express her feelings but right now I find her reaction warranted.” Larkyn’s lips curved into a slight smile as he continued. “Seriously Cy we were worried about you. No one knew where you went, I even talked to your dad. Nothing. And then you go and show up with this guy.” He nodded his head towards Drake… no Hunter with an eyeroll. Again good friend, but a fucking moron sometimes.
Speaking of. Hunter got going and instantly Larkyn knew it was going to set off Dru, if not both Dru AND Loire. Those two women were more alike than they thought. The word wife and princess came out of Hunter and all Larkyn could do was literally laugh. Dru was the first to speak and Larkyn shrugged. “You got her started man.” He listened as she went on, she was quite skilled with the verbal abuse, he had seen her use it time and time again on many occasions. Honestly sometimes the woman was down right scary. She probably would have kept going to if it wasn’t for her father walking into the room.
It seemed as if the method for getting them all out of trouble was fairly creative, honestly not the worst thing in the world. Larkyn even thought it could be fun. “Of course sir, I’m just happy you could help us all out.” The man was a snake, but it was never worth arguing with him. It was easier to just kiss ass and move on. That was why when his sister chimed in that they already worked there, Larkyn shot her a look that told her to shut it down.
Finally it seemed it all kind of settled, at least for the evening. “Dru and I can show everyone to a room, and don’t worry they’ll all be far from the scent of burnt paint.”
Cyrus knew this was a stupid plan but hadn’t realized how stupid. How did he not consider who would be on the guest list? Of fucking COURSE Larkyn would be here, Druellas family was hosting and they had been engaged since the dawn of time. He didn’t consider Loire joining though too, didn’t really seem like her thing. But apparently she did, the whole fucking gang was here. And by some twisted form of fate they were all in the room when the lights came on. What shit luck. Not that part of him wasn’t thrilled to see them, he missed them dearly but they shouldn’t get accustomed to seeing him again. It would only hurt more when he went missing without a word.
Apparently Loire decided to hurt Cyrus first. The small woman came up to him with anger all over her features and threw a punch into his arm that felt like the wind had just blown by. “I mean a dollars a dollar.” He attempted to make a joke but it was clear she wasn’t having it causing him to rub the back of his neck nervously. “Ah come on, it was stupid but it was all that guy! Honest!” He pointed in Hunters direction just as she continued talking, his arm falling back to his side.
It hurt. He missed them. He read every letter that actually got to him. Every so often he wrote back, he just never sent it. It was better that way, people shouldn’t get attached to him. It was just bad news that this point. Larkyn spoke up too and just made Cyrus feel worse. “Guys you know why I’m gone. It’s just how it has to be okay?” Before they could continue a man was entering the room, quickly shutting everyone up as he explained what was going to happen to them all.
A year. There was no way he could work at the school for a year! Especially if it was simply to pay back the debt, it meant they would be making little to no money. He had bills to pay! Though he supposed he wouldn’t be making money in jail either. Jesus this was a lose lose! Part of him wanted to turn and beat Hunter to a pulp for all of this but it wouldn’t help their case, not now.
Instead once the man left he turned and glared at the man. “Double pay, because your part of the job didn’t work out and now I’m stuck doing this shit for a YEAR. Double pay or I will kick your ass the minute we’re out of this uppity manor.” Behind him he heard Dru and Larkyn offering to take people to rooms to stay over night before heading to the school, “No offense on the uppity comment. I just… is.”
Wife. Wife. The word replayed over and over in her head and her face went red with anger. She understood why Cyrus left, she wasn’t happy and she thought that he was an ass for cutting them out but he did it for his family. Hunter? Oh, for the shit he was saying he’d be lucky to walk out of this room. Thankfully Dru seemed to quickly retaliate after he called her princess, and for the first time in years Loire was impressed with the woman. Thankfully Dru’s father seemed to put their anger on pause. But what was that look Larkyn gave her? He knew she was right, this was a stupid punishment! Loire was not an ass kisser, and she damn well didn’t need to kiss that old grumpy man’s ass.
As soon as the man left Loire pulled off her boot and whipped it at Hunter, barely missing his head and hitting the wall. Once again, she was not the athletic twin. “I’d rather fucking be disowned by my family then marry you. Next time you leave just try to stay gone, got it?” Loire was scared what this meant for her. Now that he was back would they be forced to set a date for the wedding? It made her uncomfortable and sick to her stomach. “I need to go home. Guess I’ll see you guys in the morning.” Quickly she retrieved her boot and made her exit.

This whole situation was giving Loire extreme anxiety. She’d be stuck with Dru, stuck with Hunter, her only saving grace was Larkyn and Cyrus, and Cyrus didn’t seem to keen on being there with them. The whole dynamic made her uneasy, but it wasn’t like she had a choice. In the morning she got dressed in her usual black skirt, tights, blouse, boots, and her oversized La Sorcellerie teachers robe. After she braided her long white hair and grabbed her fluffy bunny backpack she took off for the day.
The others would most likely be staying at the school from now on, but at least Loire would be able to come home at the end of the day. A small reprieve to a long day. Loire waited near the ferry with a hot cider at hand, her cat Maximus waiting patiently next to her. “Let’s get this over with, yeah?”
“Yeah. Sounds good. Thank you, Dixie.” Sapphira shown her friend a small smile, though it was weak. A whole year here was better than jail, yes, but she was terrified what her family would think. Her father thought she gave up her silly little magic, he didn’t care how good she was or anything. This was just a distraction that she didn’t need, he said those words all her life. At least she was in good company though. Dixie and her survived school, they could survive this. Sapphira liked kids, but what would she do at the school? “Yeah, if you wouldn’t mind me using one of the rooms I’ll take you up on that offer.” Once Loire walked out the red headed woman stood to her full 5’6” and walked to the door herself.

Bright and early is when Sapphira dragged Dixie to the shopping district. The items in the luggage she brought would not be enough for a week, let alone a year! She needed clothes, personal items, things to get her by. She’d deal with decor and creature comforts later, right now she just wanted essentials. After the girls were done shopping (Sapphira’s treat, retail therapy made her feel better) they retrieved her bright red luggage and her owl Ludwig from her hotel room, then proceeded to head to the ferry to meet everyone.
Despite not being home in New York in the upper class shopping district she did find some cute clothes. Sapphira found her new favorite green outfit with some matching heels, her hair was half pulled back and she woke up with a more positive outlook on today. Everything had a bright side, that’s what her friendship with Dixie has taught her. No matter what things would be ok. “So what’s the punishment for you two since you already work there?” Sapphira wore a black jacket over her shoulders as they approached Loire near the ferry.
“You know damn well all that money isn’t going to be used in promoting unity in the school, there’s absolutely no way your father would have put all that money into doing that. None of the top dogs in our society want that, and you know that. We protest, we get shut down by them. We do this at least SOMEONE will hear or see our message. Sitting around doing nothing isn’t working, is it?” Why was he arguing with her? There would be no chance she understood where he was coming from. She looked like she enjoyed her cushy life, she probably had her whole life set up for her. Hunter would too if he abided by his parents rules, but he was sick of all of the injustice. He had to distance himself before he went down the rabbit hole.
“Fine, fine, fine. Double pay, but ONLY because it seems like you know my dear brother.” Hunter pulled out his wallet and slapped some cash into the man’s hand with a sigh. Suddenly a boot was flying past his face and he didn’t even flinch. Hunter and Loire had been engaged since they were kids, he was used to the attitude, punches, and throwing things. Loire didn’t like him and she made that a known fact. “Yeah, yeah. I’ll stay gone next time, calm it down little lady.” Everyone began to depart and Hunter took that as his opportunity to excuse himself. “See you guys in the morning. Probably.”
—
“Listen Sassy, I know. I should have just bailed, but I’m pretty sure if I dip out on these guys I’ll get actual jail time. Who’s going to feed you if I’m gone? The life of a single father is exhausting.” Hunter let out a dramatic sigh as he approached the ferry. It was way too early for him but this was the time he was told to be there, and he knew he had to pick and choose his battles. This was not one.
The cat was in the large backpack on his back along with a few person effects, he mostly had to carry the backpack because the cat refused to walk sometimes. She would just lay there and stare at him at the most inconvenient times. Now she was a backpack cat if he was away most of the day. “Well where’s princess? Wasn’t she the one that set up this time?” Hunter let a long yawn pass his lips as he leaned against a nearby railing. He was dressed in black skinny jeans, a tight white tee and a black leather jacket.
After that eventful night Terran excused himself to go to his hotel room. Honestly, Terran wasn’t too tore up about this next year. It was a punishment, yes, but who got the opportunity to spend a year in their old school? Terrans years there were great, surely the lot of them shared that sentiment? They were all at a benefit for the school, they had to like it on some level. The only thing Terran hoped for was that everyone got along, he had absolutely no clue the living arrangements but he knew certain pairs could have gotten along a lot better. Maybe this would help them bond?
“Merci.” Once out of the cab Terran gave a small wave to the taxi man and watched him drive off. He stood on the curb with a green suitcase, and in his pocket sat a small hamster named Fleur. She went everywhere with him (even the event last night) and was the only constant in his life, of course she would be joining him on this adventure. Near the ferry entrance he could see a group slowly forming through the heavy fog and he gave them all a small wave. “Bonjour. Are you all prepared for our adventure today? I hope everyone slept well.” Terran gave a gentle smile to everyone, though he paused at Dixie. “You’re still well mon Cherie? No injures from your fall?”
Dru didn’t like this. Not one bit. These people. This plan. The school. That night after everyone was shown to their rooms she went and found her mother with Larkyn by her side. They explained what had happened and asked her to reason with her husband but she said she had already tried. Honestly, it wasn’t that Dru was above punishment. Or that she was a brat and didn’t want to do it. It was that she didn’t want THIS punishment, going back to a school where her magic would be under close eye again. Where it was highly possible that she may have to use air magic regularly. Somewhere she could easily get caught.
See there was something that Dru kept a close secret, only Larkyn her mother and herself knew. Not even her father. Dru never specialized during her time in school like a young witch should have. It came time for her specialization ceremony and she was unable to do it, until her mother stepped in and faked it from across the room. It wasn’t looked upon fondly for witches or wizards to not specialize, it meant they were weak. Or worse they were a user of a 5th element, one no longer spoken about due to its bad history. Dru could never even find any information on it, plus she simply assumed that wasn’t her. She was just weak.
After being shot down by her mother, Dru and Larkyn returned to their wing of the manor and tried to get themselves some sleep for the next morning. Dru however did nothing but cry. She was nervous, scared and frustrated. There was this stupid punishment, having to leave her job for a year that she worked so hard for and these people! Her and Loire already didn’t get along, the other two women seemed far too nice for Dru and the men?! These suddenly appearing old friends of her fiancés that got them all into this mess?! Aggravating! Not to mention Terrans presence!

The following morning was proof that her nightmare was real. Dru was woken up by her alarm to begin getting ready but due to finally sleeping just an hour sooner she opted to spend her getting ready time sleeping in. So instead of the normally prim and proper woman, this morning everyone got the lazy edition. She showered but simply left her chin length hair wet and slid in a basic black headband. She wore a pair of black tights with a plain black skirt overtop that hit just above her knee. A black turtleneck was on top and all she wore for accessories was a pair or black Mary janes on her feet. Most people this wasn’t the lady version but for Dru, this was very un polished.
“Oh fuck off, we’re here.” Dru grumbled, if anyone thought she was mean last night they were in for a shock this morning. “This time is simply when the ferry runs you dolt.” She walked up to the group alongside her fiancé, the two of them moving with their two small suitcases in tow. The rest of their items would be shipped over later today. As she stopped waking a blob of black began to move and take shape against her sweater, Dru reaching up her hand to stroke the small beast with a gentle smile. The sun was likely bothering the girl, but traveling in her cage seemed to stress her out. The blob was actually a small bat named Blu, which was short for Blueberry.
Somewhere nearby in the fog the ferry had to be getting close, you could now faintly hear the sounds of it and see the waves distorting the top of the once still water. “Is it too late to choose jail time?”
Honestly? Dixie was more than excited about this whole punishment thing. It made her feel a bit sheepish and guilty but, she got to spend the whole year with her best friend again! Dixie wasn’t very good at making friends despite her friendly personality, most people just found her strange. So it felt nice to know that at least for now she had someone in her corner once again. Plus Sapphira BELONGED here. The woman was insanely talented and would have been an amazing teacher, she was worth so much more as a witch.
The two women woke up early and got ready for the day before heading into the small downtown district. Dixie herself wore a pair of brown corduroy pants that had a bit of a bell bottom along with a warm toned floral blouse and a pair of tan heels. Her long blonde hair was pulled up in a messy French twist with lots of pieces sticking out and held together with a brown hair clip. There wasn’t a lot of options for shops but what was there was full of good picks! Dixie didn’t really need anything but even she fell victim to a few different clothing items and a candle that smelled like the morning rain. After some retail therapy thanks to Sapphira and a small breakfast, the two women found their way to wait for the ferry.
As they joined Loire, Sapphira spoke up and caused Dixie to shrug. “Not really sure? Maybe they’ll just take part of our pay to pay off the debt or something.” Honestly Dixie had been thinking about the same thing, even worried about it a bit. The answer she gave was the only option she could come up with as of yet. It wasn’t a great outcome but better than the alternative, plus Dixie didn’t make much anyways since she lived on campus as well. Though she also didn’t have many expenses due to the same reason.
“Morning!” Dixie cheered as others slowly arrived, taking in the crew as they joined. It was different seeing everyone out of their dress clothes, plus most of them had their pets with them! It made her that much more excited to see Turtle when she got home. Turtle was shockingly a cat, a large male tortie that spent most of his days lounging around the greenhouse and sleeping on students books.
The man who had helped her the night before arrived in a taxi, “Oh heavens no, I’m right as rain. Don’t worry about it!” She smiled at him sweetly before it fell at Drus cruel tone as she walked up. Oh this was going to be an interesting year…
“Look guys the boats docking! Let’s get ready yeah?”
They were lucky that they were getting away with this. That was what Cyrus had to keep reminding himself of. It could have been so much worse. Even though having to stick around and go to the school again kind of seemed like a literal nightmare. Part of him was ecstatic to be around his friends again, to go back to the place that was once more a home than his own was. But the other part of him knew what that meant; no money, no bills paid, awkward emotions and drama. It was more than he bargained for when he signed up for this deal with Hunter. That night when he went to bed Cyrus thought about running away, it's not like he wasn’t probably already wanted by the law. For some reason though he couldn’t make himself do it, the part that was excited won.
The following morning he woke up, got ready and found himself a place to get a cheap breakfast… aka free. He felt bad swiping food from people but thankfully there was enough hustle and bustle in the kitchen of the Arville Manor that he was able to slip some without anyone noticing. Plus it wasn't JUST for him, it was also for Buttons. She was the one long term thing that Cyrus knew would always be by his side, his pet rat who commonly found herself housed in his shirt pocket happily munching on whatever snack he could track down for her. This mornings find happened to be a muffin and some orange slices. After their meal Cyrus occupied himself with heading back to his small hideout in town to gather up a bag of clothes, which was no more than a backpack with a few clothing items and his boots.
Then it was time to meet up with the others, by the time he rolled up it seemed almost everyone was there. If not everyone. It was hard to remember all the faces he had met the night before. Hunter was present and seemingly already pissing off Dru. Loire was present as well, already looking annoyed. The face she was making actually made him chuckle softly to himself as he joined them. The grey and white rodent in his jacket pocket poked her head out and sniffed around at the familiar place, “Yeah, back to your old playground you little rascal.” He spoke softly and nuzzled her head with his hand before turning to look towards the ferry as it docked. Cyrus was the first to move to the gate, unlocking it by reaching over the short height and holding it open for the others. “All aboard? I guess.”
