Hidden Enemies - Conspiracy themed, modern fantasy/scifi

This realm is no stranger to war. Wars helped build and shape the world into what it is today. This, however, makes it easy for people to control battles so the outcome favors them. So what have our world leaders been using to trick us into favoring them? Things people only think exist in fairytales, comic books, or campfire tales. These are not objects, they are living beings. They may be aliens, vampires, demons, or just people with extraordinary gifts.
The sad part is, the general...

Rain entered her apartment after a long walk to the store. She sat her bags down on the counter, and started putting away the items. It only took her a few minutes to put everything away, so she sat on the couch to relax a bit. Rain flipped on the T.V. with her remote and changed to the news.

"Strange activities have been reported just twenty miles south of Reno, Nevada. It is unclear what the reports entail, but local police and government officials are looking into the matter. More updates will come as this story develops." The newscasters voice echoed through the room. The T.V. was interrupted when Rain heard a knock at her door.

"Rain Pikes, we need to have a word with you." Two men dressed in black suits waited at the front door. Rain started to panic, already knowing why the men were there. She looked over to the fire escape, scanning the area for any other men in black.

Somewhere out in the desert, John lit up another of his Silk Cuts cigarettes, his blood-soaked hands dripping on his white button-up shirt. The massive pentagram burned intensely near him, and the demon that writhed in the center screeched in pain, pulling intensely at the solid silver chains that held him down.

"Aw, shaddap ya manky twat! You were askin' for it anyways...!" John barked at the being.

Suddenly, a black Camero pulled up to the site, and John stood, waiting for someone to come out screaming, or shooting.

Instead, a man in a black coat came out, approached John, and handed him a card. And without a word, the stranger left. In the light of the burning flames, John read the address to an apartment complex in the city near him. A note on the back read- "Save the girl, eliminate the debt."

Rain swiftly grabbed her backpack from beside the T.V. and stuffed some clothes and food items into it. She crawled out her window onto the fire escape. As she looked back, she saw the two men bust down her apartment door. Rain ran down the fire escape stairs and made the short jump to the ground. "That was close." She said to herself as she hid behind a dumpster.

John sped down the highway, blurring past the speed limit signs he knew he was disobeying. This girl was in trouble- he could feel it. He arrived in the city, and turned off his headlights. He was going to need to be quiet and unseen in order to find this girl. He turned into an alleyway to find a group of men walking towards him in black, while a girl hid behind a dumpster on his side. He turned his headlights on, blinding them all for a moment. He sprang out of his car and ran towards the threat, pulling out a pair of brass knuckles with strange insignias on them.

Rain heard the car pull up, but when she looked she couldn't see it because of the light that blinded her temporarily. After regaining her sight, she watched the strange man running towards her pursuers. First she felt afraid and confused, she didn't know what was going on. She then realized that this man could be on her side.

John swung at the first man that approached him, followed by a swift kick to another's torso, knocking them both to the ground.

Lost in thought over whether to help the stranger out or not, Rain missed all the action. Seeing both men on the ground, she jumped out from behind the dumpster. "Thanks." She eyed the man up and down as she slowly approached him. "My name is Rain. If you don't mind me asking, who are you and why did you help me?"

John extended a hand- "The name's John. John Constantine. I'm here to help you." The reason why, however, he still didn't know.

She took his hand and shook it. "Well again, thanks." Rain replied. Looking back up at her apartment window, she shook her head. "I would invite you in, but those guys probably trashed my place looking for me. It won't be long before the place these guys came from realizes they failed and sends more people after me, and now you." She looked over to his car. "I want to get out of here. Any chance you'd let me hitch a ride to the train station?"

"Thank you John." Rain smiled as she went to his car and got in. Buckling up, she waited for him to jump in and start the car.

He hopped in, and jump started the car with the flick of his wrist, the engine roaring to life. He turned to her and asked, "Where to?"

Jason looked at her coyly, and replied, "I know a place or two. It's outside the city, and it's quite a ways."

"We'll need snacks."

"There's a store down the street." She ran her fingers through her hai and looked towards the road. "I can get us a few things with my money. You can pitch in if you want, but you don't have to."

"I'd be happy to." John pulled out of the alleyway and drove down the road. "Who were those guys, anyways?"

"They work for the government." Rain explained. "It's a complicated situation. To make a long story short, they are looking for people who are different. I know that's not much to go on, but I promise I'll tell you more about it later."

Rain followed, entering the store and looking around. She grabbed a few bags of chips, some beef jerky, and some Gatorade. Rain went to check out while waiting on John. The clerk took her money after bagging up her items. "That's all for me, you need anything?" She asked.

John grabbed twelve packs of silk cut cigarettes, and bag of table salt, and a box of white chalk. He checked out, receiving a strange look from the attendant.

Rain smiled to John as he checked out. he turned and made her way back to his car with her bags in hand. Opening the rear passengers side door, she sat her items in the backseat, and re-closed the door. She slid back into her seat ready to leave.

John carried the items and opened the trunk, placing the salt in an old gas can, and putting rest next to an old journal and cache of weapons.

"Where is this place you mentioned earlier, if you dont mind my asking?" Rain was slightly curious and a bit worried. She hoped they wouldn't be seen.

John replied, "It's a safe house, very rural. Only living beings around are some cows and maybe farmers."

"Sounds great, as long as there no surveillance around." Rain commented, buckling up. She felt a small pulse move through her veins to her head, and into her eyes. "Oh no, not now!" She exclaimed. She had felt this feeling before, it was the feeling she got when her eyes were about to change color. Her normal brown eyes had now faded, and in place was a vibrant purple color.
