Her Shining Escape

Abigail was sitting quietly with her embroidery tutor when one of her father's messages entered the room. Giving a bow the man looked at her. "Princess, the king and queen request your presence in the throne room," he said before exiting the room. Sighing Abigail stood and curtsied towards her tutor before making her way out of the room.

Following the halls toward the throne room she thought on what her parents could want her for. Had she been caught beyond the castle gates again. If she had then whoever had been spying on her had been good this time or Sarah would have caught them quickly. Realizing that she now stood before the grand doors of the throne room she paused as the two guards stationed there pushed the large guild ed doors open.

Once she entered the large room she noticed that her personal guard Sarah was already present. Giving the fae girl a small smile she turned to her parents. Giving a slight curtsy to each parent she waited until her father nodded before she spoke. "What have you called me for father," she asked her voice carrying the air of a noble. A voice she hated using.

"Yes child," King Marcus said, his voice booming through the hall. "We, your mother and I, have finally settled on a husband for you," he said his voice daring the princess to protest. Protest was what she was about to do when her mother cut her off before a single syllable could even leave her lips. "Don't worry dear you will be marrying Head Prince Jacob, this union will bring protection to our people," Queen Anora said kindly. "Also you will have Sarah with you," her mother said addressing the young fae.

Sarah had been present in the throne room for a while now, however beyond asking the King and Queen what the issue was she had remained silent. She didn't exactly like the thought of the two of them up and marrying her best friend to someone just because he was Prince of one of the larger kingdoms. However, from what she heard Jacob was supposed to be a decent enough guy. Of course she hadn't exactly dug to far into the matter as she had no idea that Queen Anora would do something like this on such short notice. There really wasn't enough time to look for any information at all now though, but you could bet that Sarah would do her best to make sure the guy was suited for Abigail. King and Queen's wishes or not if the guy was a total asshole she'd do her best to make sure they weren't married, the last thing she wanted was for her friend to spend the rest of her life in a torturous relationship.

Nevertheless Abigail soon entered the room prompting Sarah to lightly bow and smile at her. Her smile persisted as her parents told her what was going to happen and that she would be coming with her. "Yep. They told me about it the other day and I was the first to enlist to accompany you." Sarah told her. "I'll do my best to keep you safe as always, Princess." She added, bowing once more. In a way she was sort of worried. What if her getting married meant she wasn't able to see her ever again? Abigail was about the only friend she had, and certainly her best. She assumed she would convince the man to let her stay with her, but she couldn't be too sure.

Hearing Sarah's words of reassurances that she would in fact be coming along with her set Abigail's mind at ease. She was unsure as to what she would have done without her best friend by her side. "When am I to leave, mother, father, " she asked politely. Having had to endure many hours of etiquette training dug that politeness into her very core.

"Your ladies and you will be setting out at dawn. Sarah will escorts you to the main gate a little before," her father told her. "Now you are both dissmissed," he bellowed. Bowing to each of her parents in turn the princess turned and made her way out of the throne room.

Once she knew that she was out of ear shot of the guards she turned to Sarah. "I don't want to marry Prince Jacob," she whined to her friend, tears glistening in her eyes.

Sarah remained quiet as Abigail asked when they were going to leave. They must of been operating on a rather tight schedule to leave that early. Sarah herself wasn't a fan of waking up that early, but orders were orders, and she definitely wasn't going to refuse to protect her friend. She'd just have to deal with waking up insanely early for a few days, she guessed. She dreaded the coming days not only for lack of sleep but for fear of losing her friend. When they were dismissed Sarah walked to in front of the thrones, smiled warmly, and bowed. "I promise she will arrive safely." She told them before straightening up and walking outside alongside her.

She was going to say something but it was Abigail who spoke first. She smiled sadly at her, she figured as much. She sighed and placed a hand on her shoulder. "I don't really blame you Abby. But..look at it this way. Prince Jacob might be a really nice guy." She replied. "I don't really like the situation anymore than you do..but..there's not much other choice. Your parents won't allow you to say otherwise, I mean..believe me if I could convince them I would of already." She told her. "I promise I won't let anything bad happen to you, be it you getting attacked or Prince Jacob not being as nice as people make him out to be."

Hearing the reassuring words that her friend was giving her made her smile a little. Abigail didn't know what she would do if she was ever separated from the wonderful friend that was Sarah. Picturing her life without the fae caused the princess to throw her arms around her friend in a tight embrace. "As long as you're with me I know I'll be okay," she cried into her friends shoulder. After a few minuets of just holding her friend she let out one final sniff before retracting herself and straightening herself back out.

She slowly began to pace the hall a bit trying to think of a way to make her last night here memorable. 'Isn't it the last night of the lunar festival' she asked herself. Looking to Sarah she smirked, knowing exactly what they were going to do. "Ready for one last adventure in the city before we are shipped out," she asked Sarah, her voice full of mischief.

Sarah blinked as Abigail suddenly threw her arms around her crying. After the initial moment of shock she smiled and hugged her back gently leaning her head on her shoulder. "You got that right." She told her, chuckling lightly. No matter what she'd never let anything happen to Abigail. Even if for some reason she stopped being her friend she'd always protect her until she died, she didn't even consider Abigails death a possibility at this point. She just continued hugging her the entire time she cried while gently rubbing her back in a soothing manner. Soon she seemed to recover from her initial sadness, though she was obviously still bothered.

When she released her she quickly did the same and let her arms rest at her sides. She watched as she started pacing, slowly raising an eyebrow as she turned to her and smirked. There was no telling what the girl was planning, Princess or not Abigail had her mischieveous moments. And Sarah could easily tell this was one of them. At her words she grinned and nodded, "You bet I do!" She replied cheerfully. "Why was that even a question?" She told her before giggling. "What do you have in mind?" She asked, curious to see what she had thought up.

Abigail was about to answer Sarah's question when the guards came around the corner to finish up their patrol. "Oh Princess, Lady Sarah, what are you two doing in the middle of the corridor," guard A asked. "This is no place for the Princess allow us to escorts you to your chamber," guard B quickly added leaving no room for arguement.

Giving both guards a hard look Abigail shook her head. "No thank you kind sirs but Lady Sarah was already escorting me," she said, looking to Sarah for her to confirm her statement. Not waiting for the guards to protest Abigail began walking in the direction of her waiting room. After making it to the door she stopped and laughed. "They almost had us," she said in gasps of breath.

After composing herself she grabbed Sarah's hand and took off to where she hid her "common" clothes. "We are going to the lunar festival," she told her friend. She had been to the first night, as it was custom for the Princess to make an appearance. Now she wanted to go to have fun, not as a figure head to be gawked at. "We might get into a fight or two as well," she joked, knowing it would coax a reaction from her nonviolent friend. Granted Abigail was also opposed to most types of violence herself but a good spar never hurt anyone, badly at least.

Sarah froze slightly though remained completely normal when the guards came and started trying to escort Abigail rather forcefully to her room. Abigail was the first to respond, Sarah of course nodding in response when prompted. "Thank you, but she's right, we were on our way there now." She told them, promptly turning to follow Abigail down the hall. She too laughed a little once she stopped, relieved and a bit shocked they had made it out of that situation. "Yeah, that was very close. Good thing I was actually with you though." She replied.

She quickly followed alongside Abigail when she started leading her somewhere, not entirely sure where she was going. She also soon told her exactly where they were going, and of course Sarah immediately liked the idea. "Ooh. Awesome! That sounds like fun." She told her, her wings twitching slightly in excitement. She frowned slightly she mentioned them getting into a fight or two, sighing lightly. "Well...if you want to. I mean, it is one of your last nights of freedom and stuff." She replied, clearly not too enthusiastic about the idea, but clearly supportive of it if she wanted to.

Hearing her friend sigh she sighed herself, realizing her friend hadn't caught her jest. Deciding to let Sarah know she was joking after she changed she grabbed her change of clothes and walked into the dressing room.

A few minutes later she emerged from the room looking like a common dweller.

"I was kidding about the fighting Sar, so relax," she said embracing her friend breifly. Pulling her long blonde hair into an archers knot she was ready. "I can't wait to get out there," she said bouncing from foot to foot. Looking to Sarah she smiled "you going fly," she asked while they walked to the stables to retrieve Madge, Abigail's large white mare. After placing the saddle on the horses back and tightening the starp she began looking for the bridle. "Oh no," she said upon spotting the broken bit.

Sarah waited calmly outside of the dressing room while Abigail changed. She didn't exactly have any commoner clothes for herself to change into however, so it would be a bit obvious who she was. But, oh well. She doubted most people would say anything anyways, and if they did Sarah would likely bribe them not to. Soon Abigail emerged from the room telling her she was only kidding about the fighting. "Oh. Okay. But, still. If you had really wanted to I wouldn't of minded I guess." She replied. She smiled and nodded in agreement at her friends' excitement. "I'm pretty excited too. It should be fun to go for once and be able to enjoy ourselves." She told her quickly following alongside her.

Abigail then asked her if she was going to fly. "Of course I am silly unless you'd rather me ride on your horse with you." She responded in a matter-of-fact way. Sarah flew whenever she could, herself really enjoying the activity. Even though she had flown mostly all her life it never lost the excitement factor for her. She watched as Abigail set up the horse, in the end finding out the bit was broken. "Awh. Well. I suppose I could fly the both of us?" She suggested, smiling reassuringly at her. "You aren't that heavy, and besides this shouldn't stop us from having fun." She added.

Giving Sarah a bright smile she nodded. "It's been forever since you've let me fly with you," Abigail said to her friend. It was a thrill to fly and she was slightly envious of Sarah sometimes for being able to do so whenever she pleased.

"If anyone asks though my name is Agiel," she reminded her friend. She knew that Sarah would be recognized in the city but she couldn't help that. Her friend was the only fae in the royal guard and that brought a the girl a bit of fame among the commoners.

As she stepped closer to her friend she took her hand and smiled. "Do you remember how we first met Sarah," she asked her friend as they made their way to the wall just past the stables.

Sarah smiled warmly, "Awesome!" She replied cheerfully. "Do you want me to pick you up or do you want to ride on my back?" She asked. She didn't exactly fly her often, the last time the both of them were a a decent bit younger, so she wasn't sure which position would be best. After all, she wasn't exactly the strongest in the least. She wasn't exactly a weakling, but she wasn't going to be breaking down doors by strength alone or anything. When she told her to address her as Agiel she nodded, "Will do Abby." She told her. She guessed she could easily just pass it off as Agiel being a diplomat or one of her other friends. It would be a lie, but, still.

Soon Abigail asked if they remembered how they first met. She did to a degree, but, her memory generally wasn't that good on..anything really. "Uhh...I remember you finding me when you sneaked out into the forest, not much else." She replied before shrugging. It's not that it wasn't important to her, really it was, but she just didn't remember that well.

Reaching the wall she looked to her friend. "I guess it would be easier if you picked me up that way I'm not in the way of your wings," Abigail said. Thinking about the firework show that was set for the end of the night she smiled as her friend lifted her. "You'll let me know if I'm to heavy right," she asked in concern. She didn't want to put to much strain on the other girl.

Remembering that day in the forest she giggled. "I remember that you thought I was a boy," she said laughing. "Agiel was the name you called me back then," she told her. "It was also the first time I had sneaked past the castle walls," she said.

Looking down she saw the lights of the city and smiled. She loved it here and she really didn't want to leave. She also didn't want to get married yet but as a princess it was her duty to do what was best for her people. "Let's set down by the tavern," Abigail said noticing that area was less crowded than anywhere else.

Sarah nodded and wrapped her arms around Abigail's waist snugly. "Yeah, you're probably right." She replied. She chuckled lightly when she asked if she'd tell her if she was too heavy, "Of course I would. I might decide to drop you if you were too." She told her, chuckling once more. "Kidding, I'd never drop ya. Even if you were too heavy I'd just land." She added.

Of course soon her friend commented further on when they first met, Sarah giggling lightly when she said she thought she was a boy initially. She remembered that, she also remembered the name now that she mentioned it. "You did kinda look like a boy back then. But you don't now, you're very pretty." She said. "It was also pretty funny when I found out you weren't, and that you were the princess. I still find it hard to believe that you are and that I'm your body guard and junk. Just goes to show not all royalty is stuck up and stuff I guess." She explained.

Soon they were in the air and flying steadily across the city. Abigail was certainly heavier and bigger than when she'd last flown her somewhere, but she'd be able to manage. She looked for a place to land, however soon Abigail told her somewhere to land herself. She thus nodded and landed beside the tavern as instructed, people of course immediately noticing her. She simply smiled and waved before turning to Abigail. "So, what do you want to do first?" She asked.

After Sarah landed Abigail looked around noticing many people looking at the fae girl. Not liking how the man across the street from them was looking at her Abigail tossed her arm around her friends shoulders and glared at the man, clearly telling him to back down.

Thinking about the comment that Sarah had made while they had been flying caused her to giggle. "You know as well as I do that in these clothes and with my hair pulled back I still get mistaken as a male of elven descent," she laughed, "I mean that's what you thought I was," she said her smile still in place. "Plus royal or not I'm entitled to be my own person, not a stuffy figure head like my parents," she said.

A minuet later they were away from the tavern and in the main plaza. Looking around Abigail saw many game booths as well as a few small rides. Noticing the archery booth she pointed to it. "How about we do that first, see if you've improved your bowmanship," she said, a slight bit of cockieness slipping into her voice.

Sarah hadn't noticed the man staring at them from across the street, not at first. Or at-least not until Abigail wrapped an arm around her shoulders and glared at him. She was curious as to what that was about, her friend knew full well she could defend herself against any commoner in the kingdom. Heck she even bested some of the castle guards at time. Nevertheless she wasn't exactly against the affection, Sarah herself being extremely big on hugging, nor did she think anything about it.

She chuckled and nodded when she mentioned that she still got mistaken as a male elf. "Yeah, you're right. You do kinda look like an elf in that get-up." She replied. Though she sighed when she mentioned she didn't have to be a figurehead like her parents. "Yeah..I agree. I really wish they weren't forcing you into this. I just wish I had gotten them to change their minds..." She told her sadly. Honestly the situation had her slightly depressed, but for now she needed to do her best to ignore it. Her and Abigail were supposed to be having fun!

Soon they were in the plaza where a lot of different booths had been set up, everything from games to food. Of course her friend pointed out the archery game first. Abigail was and always would be the better archer between the two, and she was determined to prove that to her every chance she got. "Alright, alright. But you go first Ms. Crackshot." She said, chuckling lightly and grinning cheekily. She knew she was the better shot, but teasing was always fun.

Abigail gave a snort of laughter at her friend, "then I guess that's what we'll say if anyone asks, I'm a half-blood wood elf here on a diplomatic visit," she said. Walking over to the archery booth she paid the vendor twenty bronze coins for her five shots.

The objective of this was to hit as many moving targets dead center before time ran out. After inspecting the bow she gave a nod to the game master that she was ready. Notching her first arrow she let out a breath as she took aim. "Watch this," was all she said to Sarah before firing the arrows in quick secession. After she loosed the final arrow she whooped with joy as she had hit all five targets perfectly.

Giving a cheeky grin she looked back to the game master. "Alright lad which prize would you like for yer girlfriend," the game master asked. At the question Abigail's face turned a flaming red. Being unable to really answer she turned to her friend and pointed to the large unicorn plush.

Taking the toy down from the hook the game master handed it to Sarah. Looking the young fae over his eyes widened, "I know you," he said pointing to her, "You're the princess' personal guard," he said in amazement.

Sarah grinned and nodded. "As good a plan as any buddy." She replied. Really though, it made sense. She could simply say that the King and Queen ordered her to protect the diplomat temporarily over the princess. Nothing complicated and something easily believable to stop them from getting into trouble. Soon they were at the booth and Abigail had paid for her shots. Of course she had to to show off and fire the arrows so fast it was nearly impossible to comprehend that she even had. Was she sure she wasn't actually part elf?

"Mhm. Nice." She told her sarcastically, pretending to be annoyed but grinning nonetheless. She blushed alongside Abigail when the game master mentioned her being her girlfriend. She didn't really know how to answer that just as much as it seemed Abigail didn't. She smiled an grabbed the plushie when handed it nonetheless, carefully cradling it against her chest in both arms. She blinked when the man said he knew her, and proceeded to be amazed over the fact she was the Princess' guard. "Yep! I am. Nice to meet you sir." She replied. "The King and Queen wanted me to escort this man around, so I'm with him for a while instead of Princess Abigail." She explained before he could question it. "My turn next." She replied, paying him the coin and waiting to receive the bow and arrows.

Hearing the man recognize Sarah as her personal guard Abigail panicked a but. She should have known that Sarah would have a quick response. Once the cover story left her friends mouth the disguised princess let out a breath of relief.

Abigail smiled once the game master handed the bow and arrows over to the fae. "Tryin ta win yer boyfriend a prize now eh lil missy," the vendor asked while winking at the winged girl causing Abigail to flush once again. Walking over towards the targets again standing slightly behind her friend she grinned.

"I bet she'll only hit three," the princess said to the man standing next to her. "Your form is wrong," she told her friend before stepping up behind her. Helping her friend correct her stance caused a few girls around them to swoon. Whispers of "he's so handsome," and "she's so lucky," ringing up from the small crowd that had gathered around them durring Abigail's own archery display, causing the princess to glow like a flame.

Sarah blinked at the mans words, her blush that had died down quickly returning. She immediately shook her head, "He isn't my boyfriend. Like I said they assigned me to guard him and show him around the festival." She insisted. Why did he insist on teasing her? She sighed lightly and took the bow and arrow, quickly moving back over to the targets and notching an arrow.

Abigail was right behind her watching her so she had to do her best to not do poorly, however she doubted she would be able to do good. She wasn't that skilled in archery at all, mostly only practicing it because Abigail wanted her too. She drew the bow and was just about to fire when she mentioned her only hitting three targets. "You wish." She told her before drawing the bow once more.

Of course this time Abigail moved to correct her stance for her, causing Sarah to sigh lightly at the comments she managed to hear from the crowd. It seemed everyone thought they were a couple and she couldn't covince them otherwise...oh well. Nevertheless she thanked her before firing at the targets and actually doing worse than her friend expected and only hitting two. "Welp..I tried." She told them before shrugging lightly.

After Sarah shot her last arrow Abigail laughed at her friends display. "Very true Sar you did try, and did a better than last time," she said as she placed a hand on her friends shoulder. "Ay lass ya still get a small prize," the game master called as Abigail was about to lead them to a taiyaki stand.

Returning to the prize area she waited as her friend picked her prize. After choosing the princess made her way to the stall. "I would like a red bean paste taiyaki please," she told the cook. Looking to Sarah she waited for her friend to order, "This is on me," she told her friend kindly.

Sarah giggled lightly and rolled her eyes and her friends teasing. "Damn right I did, don't practice everyday for nothing." She replied. Which..considering that statement was true only proved how absolutely terrible she was at archery. She was a bit jealous of Abigail with how skilled she was in it if she were being honest. But, she guessed it was to be expect of a Princess to be expertly skilled in multiple things. When the game master said she still got a small prize she pointed out a small plushie that looked somewhat like Abigails horse and handed it to her. "Thank you." She told the man.

That done she picked up her own plushie from the counter and followed Abigail to the taiyaki stand. She waited for her friend to order before trying to decide herself on what to get, only smiling and nodding when she told her she'd pay for it. "Thanks Agiel." She replied, feeling slightly awkward using the fake name. "Uhh..I want one with red bean paste too please." She told the cook. So far she was having a lot of fun with Abigail and it seemed she was too, good. She really needed this before the trip tommorrow for sure.

Smiling at the small plush that Sarah had won, it looked so much like Madge. After taking her fresh taiyaki from the salesman she thanked him before walking over to a bench not to far away. "I think the fireworks are about to start," she said to her friend. Just seconds later the first loud boom rang out.

As soon as the bright colors lit the sky many of the girls that had seen Abigail at the archery stand ran over to her. One even going as far as to push Sarah off the bench. Two girls grabbing one of her arms begging her to watch the fireworks with them. Not knowing what to do she tried to pull away, but these girls had a death grip on her arms.

Sarah was happy Abigail liked the plush Madge look-a-like, she figured she would and that's why she got it for her. She really liked the unicorn one she had got for her too, the plushie being really soft and cuddly. They soon had their snacks and Abigail walked over to a bench for them to eat, Sarah following closely beside her and of course sitting down with her. When her friend said the fireworks were about to start she looked really excited. "Awesome!" She cheered, perfectly in line with them actually starting.

She was enjoying watching the fireworks with Abigail and eating up until some of the girls from the archery stand swarmed them, one of them even shoving Sarah aside and taking her seat. She landed on the ground with a small 'oof!' while also dropping her half eaten taiyaki. She glared up at the girls quite literally swarming Abigail. She was her friend, not theirs! They were supposed to be having fun together on the chance she'd soon never see her again! It wasn't fair! The normally calm and docile girl stood up from the ground and roughly shoved one of the members of the swarm aside. "All of you! Shoo! I'm not just going to sit here and let you harass him!" She shouted, wrenching one of the girls arms free from Abigail; the one who had shoved her off the bench, and sitting back down beside her with her hand on the hilt of her sword. "Leave him alone or risk jail time." She warned, extremely annoyed they were ruining the fireworks for the both of them.
