Hell's Backdoor (Starving & Cecily)

"Man, where are they? I told them we'd be here exactly at 11:30!"

Walking around impatiently, Damon kicked a stray beer bottle off of the rocky driveway and into the street, watching it shatter in a cloud of dust. It was Halloween night, and kids were still running around in their colorful little costumes. The adults were either patiently sitting in their houses, or being responsible for the several broken bottles that were beginning to litter the streets. Yet at his age, he was quite caught between the choice of scary outfits and illegal drinking. Illegal drinking was.... well, illegal. Scary outfits were too much of a pain, and he was "too old for that childish stuff" anyway. Damon was really just an overexcited kid right now though, he wasn't gonna lie.

It was his idea to drag everyone down to the rumored Haunted House in town, and he just couldn't possibly pass up the chance to get there and at midnight no less. He had even dressed up for the occasion, despite his friend's warning him and saying he looked like a hoodlum when he wore such dark clothes. He decided to imitate something off a ghost hunting show, with dark jeans and a black jacket over an even black-er shirt. Granted, that 'dark' image was kind of ruined by his green shoes. He still thought it was cool anyway. And when he pulled up the hood, he'd laugh because his friend Levi had told him he looked like a mugger. Dark hair ( that really needed a trim) and heavy set eyebrows probably didn't help that.

"Hell if I know, probably caught up in trick or treating."

Sitting by Damon was Levi, he had accompanied him on his walk to the current house because he lived right by him and therefore didn't need to waste time by arriving separately. Levi had nothing to do, as he stopped trick or treating ages ago when he was around ten. He remembered getting teased for that and many other things, his family calling him a little businessman. During the whole entire time they walked to their destination however, Levi tried to convince Damon not to drag them in that house for their silly ideas. He also complained about the dark clothing, it just wasn't practical. Yet here he was. He never really could say no to his friends. Even if the one before him, kicking around dangerous shards of glass, was his polar opposite. Even in looks it stood out.

He himself came reasonably prepared, with a good pair of jeans and white tennis shoes. A white shirt and jacket that would show up easily in the dark, so naturally he wore those. And then while his friend's hair was untamed and dark, his was blonde and trimmed neatly to his scalp. Standing up, he walked over to the opposite end of the driveway, staring down the dark road as houses began to turn off their porch lights for the night.

"Well they better get here soon, I'm so pumped for this!"

"Trust me, we can tell."

"Oh shut up Levi, just chill out and have some fun. You don't have to believe in them like Attie does. But she can sure try and convince with you!"

With a laugh, Damon followed him out to the end of the driveway, looking down the road as well. People were certainly turning in early. Then again, it was starting to become one of the warmest nights of Halloween ever. The day had been so warm earlier that him and Levi actually stood in front of a fridge with the freezer open because it was so sweltering hot. He shuddered at the thought of his shirt sticking to his back like it did, all covered in sweat and grime.

Gross.

He felt bad for Levi though, standing in front of that cool fridge breeze in that heat made his glosses fog up. It wasn't all that usual for it to be warm in October, after all they lived relatively down south. Didn't change the fact though that this was unnatural weather. They figured the night had cooled down the earth some, but it was starting to rise back up. He hoped the girls would arrive soon.

Damon suddenly felt Levi grab his arm, turning him towards the other end of the street. "There they are," he said, "We should go down and meet them since the Haunted House is that way." Walking ahead of Damon, he waved down to their friends, calling for them to come forward. "Hey guys, what took you so long?" Damon however interrupted, running to them and shouting, "It's close to midnight, let's go! Ghosts are a'waiting!"

"Atley, come on. You're walking too slow and you know how antsy Damon gets when we're late for his ‘daredevil stunts’." Hazel used her middle and pointer fingers to put quotes around it because the boy's ideas usually wound up getting them caught or putting them in danger. Her jaw was clenched in slight exasperation, but, like always, she found it hard to be annoyed at her closest mate. The freckles that dusted over her cheekbones and the bridge of her nose scrunched as she let out a huff. "Y'know, the fact that I'm practically having to haul you down the street really isn't helping."

The two girls stood out like roses in a sea of forget-me-nots in the midst of colorful children's costumes and intoxicated adults, mainly because one had their arms securely wrapped beneath the other's armpits and around her torso while the latter was being dragged down the street by the former. Atley's feet weren't even planted on the ground — Hazel was pretty much pulling her along (walking backward, mind you), so much so that the heels of Attie's black converse scuffed and scraped against the uneven gravel of the road. Despite how suspicious and odd their situation looked, neither teen was payed much attention to by the impassive passerbyers although they heard a muttered 'kids these days,' come from an older, grumpier-looking man.

"Remind me why I agreed to come with you three again?" Atley looked cross-eyed at a strand of her dark-chocolate hair that was currently tickling her nose, and she attempted to blow it out of the way as Hazel gave a confident reply.

"Because Damon, Levi, and I are your best friends and you love us."

"Uh, yeah, sure, let's go with that." The girl truly did love her friends — they've known each other for such a long time — but there were just some things that they wanted to do that made her wonder if they had working brains. They had thought it would be a wonderful idea to go to a rumored haunted house at midnight of Halloween, despite Atley's vehement protests. Halloween was the day where evil creatures and spirits were at their maddest, and being a supernatural fanatic, she didnt really think that the plan they were following was a good one. Yet somehow she had been convinced to tag along (which she was now dutifully regretting).

Hazel exhaled sharply through her nose. "You're lucky you're so light, otherwise I wouldn't be able to lug you down this byway."

"Yeah, lucky me." The sarcasm was clear.

"Don't get your panties in a twist, nothing's going to happen."

"Just because you don't believe in ghosts and demons and such doesn't mean they aren't real," Atley said in objection, glancing down at the many silver bracelets she wore, each one having multiple crosses; she had to have at least seven pieces of jewelry on each wrist. Before either could say anything more, they heard loud yells directed at them.

"Good lord, Damon, you've probably blinded someone with your shoes!" Hazel shouted back, waving to the two before letting go of Atley so she could stand up. The brunette brushed herself off, the charms on her bangles chiming as she moved. Yet she waved down to the guys anyway, unable to keep the smile off her face.

[sorry for the late reply, I went out to lunch. :P ]

Damon laughed when he heard Hazel's remark. "Shut up, it still looks cool!" He said in retaliation. "Glad you guys finally made it, we gotta get down there fast before the clock strikes midnight!" Running around the girls in excitement he eventually veered off to the side somewhat, stopping at a street sign that said Washington Avenue. "It's just down this way. Apparently it's the last house on the left too! How great is that?!"

Levi let out a breath of exasperation at his friends reference, "That's not even a horror movie though, it's a gruesome crime drama deal. If you're gonna make some references at least make sure it matches."

"Booo!" Making a face at Levi, Damon ran back around to the girls, arms over both of their shoulders as he began to try and walk them down the road in his eagerness. He was a rather physical fellow this night it seemed, running, jumping and all. Levi thought he would be skipping down that road any minute now. "Hey Attie, what was it you said about it being Midnight on Halloween? I just wanna be reminded why this is going to be fun!" Levi rolled his eyes, knowing exactly what she was going to say. She already had her jewelry on, and now Damon was going encourage her to go on.

He just didn't get those things sometimes he guessed. It was such silly nonsense! Ghosts, being real. As if.

(Perfectly fine! ^-^)

( Man, Atley's going to feel so triumphant when her friends realize that the things she obsesses about are actually real. Cx )

"Whatever you say, Damon," Hazel replied teasingly, a leisure laugh escaping her lips as she rolled her amiable eyes; that boy could be such a goof sometimes. "This better be really cool, otherwise there's a big chance that Atley'll murder me later." She looked over at Attie with an amused little smirk and saw the fanatic raise a mischeivous eyebrow and crack a sly smile. "So, Mister Daredevil, unless you want me dead, which I know you do not because you adore me, I'm going to hope that this is as interesting as you make it out to be."

Hazel loved the relationship she had with the three of her friends; whenever she did something bad or if she knew something bad was coming at her, they all knew that there would be a comment along the lines of, ‘I know you love me’, ‘because you all love me so much,’ and/or ‘don't deny your love for me, guys’ coming soon after — she just loved to josh around with people.

As Damon ran around the girls in undeniable excitement, Atley couldn't contain a bit of laughter as he skidded to a stop and made some reference (that she didnt understand) about the name of the avenue. "Well gee, someone has ants in their pants tonight. You mind want to have that checked out," she jested, and she lightly swatted him on the chest as he began to steer her and Hazel down the road; she took a quick glance over her shoulder to make sure Levi was in tow.

As Atley was about to reply to Damon's question, Hazel let out a sound that was a mix between a groan and a chuckle; it earned her a very odd look from her best friend. "Way to encourage her, Damon."

"I'm just going to pretend I didn't hear that, Hazel. Anyway, even though I've said it about a thousand times, and I know you're just questioning to annoy me, but I'm going to answer anyway." The brunette gave Levi a sideways glance, knowing perfectly well that he was probably going to say something about supernatural things not being real. "Twelve o'clock on Halloween night is when spirits and demons alike are lurking on the verge of entering the human realm — ahem, precisely why I didn't want to come with you guys in the first place." She sent a glare in Hazel's direction who pretended to be angelically innocent. Continuing on with her spiel, Atley added, "It's why I'm wearing more silver crosses than normal." Usually she'd have a couple over bracelets on; today she had fourteen: seven on each wrist. "Because demons, ghosts, and unholy beings are burned by holy things," she finished stubbornly. "Can't you feel that it's hotter than normal? It's October and the weather is as if we're in August. It's because Hell is closer."

"Relax Attie, it's just a hot Halloween, we get those every once and a while. What you were talking about does make for a good horror-ish story, though," Hazel said thoughtfully, earning a flick in the ear from the other girl.
