i'm not going to lie, it was the money. it's always the money when it comes to certain specialties - derm, ophthalmology, anesthesiology. had i listened to my heart it would've actually been vetmed, but the privatization is even worse than in human healthcare. for my parents, my grandparents, and my wife, who sacrificed so, so much for me while i was in med school; this choice was primarily for them. not being able to repay them would be such a burden to me. even though they've parroted the same sentence over and over again, it all goes down the drain once they realize they wouldn't have an apartment in downtown manhattan nor the ability to fly out to aruba once per year had i chosen differently. it's not to say that i'm not happy, quite the contrary - but the money definitely solidifies that i made the right decision.

    Due to his past, Elian's had to do a whole lot of growing up in a very short time. Ever since a young age he's been very mature and level headed since there had to be at least one sane person in his household, it certainly wasn't gonna be his parents. He's often the mediator and the conflict resolver in disagreements both personal and in the workplace. His pragmatism helps both his career and his relationships as he's not only good at coming up with the solutions but he's decisive enough to pick between them in a heartbeat. He looks at life as a series of problems to be solved and hurdles to jump, which keeps him on edge when things are going smoothly as he's often found waiting for the other shoe to drop. In addition to anxiety he also struggles with self loathing and personal judgement, but he typically puts those more personal issues in favor of dealing with his work or helping others. This leaves many of his own issues cast aside to fester and eventually creep up on him, sometimes coming out in the form of an emotional outburst when he least expects it. Though it has it's perks, his decisiveness is also the result of his constant assumption that he's right, leading him to be hard-headed and inflexible, sometimes causing more fights than he resolves. Though his intentions are always to try and find at least some common ground with other he comes in contact with, though he refuses to stand for any kind of bigotry or prejudice and will call out that behavior as soon as he sees it.

    Elian Micah Combes was born to Sadie and Zachary Combes, joined two years later by his younger sister Raina. The family alternated living below and just barely above the poverty line. Sadie worked as a nanny while Zachary worked for an air conditioner repair company. The tension caused his parents to be fairly distant from one another, and their children. The home environment wasn't outwardly abusive, but the cold front that each of his parents put up and their constant working meant that they were hardly around, and if they were it felt no different than when they weren't. Elian and Raina grew very close, banding together to survive the isolation that they felt. He also sought shelter in academics. He had a natural ability to excel as a student, the praise he received from his teachers filled the void that his parent had left, encouraging him to continue to work hard at school. In high school he also found another respite from his homelife in the form of a girl in his chemistry class, Hailey Bridges.

    The two fell hard and fast for each other, quickly becoming a steady couple. Hailey was the first person he told about his securing a scholarship at a prestigious university. His hard work was finally paying off. But his plans to go to college and leave his old life behind where derailed during his senior year. Due to the fact that he and Hailey would be attending colleges on opposite sides of the country, they knew the logical thing to do was break up but they wanted to commemorate their relationship with one final night spent in one another's arms. As luck would have it, that one night resulted in them conceiving a child. Hailey had been raised by her aunt due to her father's identity being a mystery and her mother having run off. She'd always wanted a family of her own that was nothing like her upbringing and she knew instantly that she wanted to keep the baby. She told Elian that they could try to make long distance work, and even offered him the out of his parental responsibilities but he had that same desire to break the cycle that she did. He knew that Hailey and her aunt wouldn't be able to support a baby on their own, so he declined his scholarship but instead took a job in town, moved in with Hailey. Though not before he proposed to her and the two wed at city hall.

    They welcomed a baby girl, Noelle Rosalie Combes later that year, but not without issue. At their daughter's first week of life check up, she was diagnosed profoundly deaf. Determined to follow through on their promise to give their family everything that they never had, Elian and Hailey committed to learning American Sign Language while saving up money for cochlear implant surgery which Noelle received at ten months of age. Once the new family life had been established Elian began attending the local community college at nineteen. They managed to get by on their limited income for a few years, but the same problems that got to Elian's parents began to trickle in. He and Hailey signed divorced papers two months before his twentieth birthday.

    For the next few years he managed to juggle his academic duties and co-parenting with his now ex-wife. He moved into an apartment of his own and kept a good GPA and by the time he was ready to transfer to a university he was able to get financial assistance as he earned his pre-med bachelor's degree at twenty-three, followed by his completion of medical school at twenty-nine with a gap year between the two educations.

    During his intern year, after much discussion they decided that Hailey would have sole custody for the time being until the chaos in his life had begun to settle. After the year had completed and he was now moving into his residency, Hailey received a promotion at work for a position in England. Considering getting accommodations for Noelle at her current school was difficult enough, not to mention the fact that England used British Sign Language instead of ASL. To save their daughter, and themselves, the strife the custody arrangement was changed again, with Elian now being the primary guardian.

    It's been two years since it's been just Elian and Noelle now, though Hailey makes frequent video calls to her. The duo have their routine down pretty well now as he heads into his third year of residency. It hasn't been too hectic so far, but there's always time for that to change.

    Elian's daughter with his ex-wife. She's fifteen years old and uses ASL as her primary method of communication, though she does have bilateral cochlear implants and occasionally speaks vocally when she has to or wants to. She's a bright young girl who inherited her parents' intelligence, as well as her father's stubbornness. In the years since she's been living with her father she's been known to spend her time after school at her father's place of employment where she will work on her homework and try to stay out of trouble, to varying degrees of success.

















    Raina Combes



    Younger sister to Elian. While Elian and Raina, or 'Rainy' as he often refers to her as, were close as children ever since she moved out California for her work as a marketing consultant back when she was twenty-two they've grown more distant due to the time difference and miles between them. Raina does however send constant text messages to her brother to keep in touch, and Elian will get back to her between pages when he can.

















    Hailey Bridges



    Ex-wife/former highschool sweetheart of Elian and mother to Noelle. She works in tech security and moved to London two years ago to help build a better protection system for a bank. She and Elian's divorce was somewhat rocky at the beginning after years of dating without a problem, besides an unexpected pregnancy, but they now have put the past behind them. She still considers him her best friend and struggled a lot with the idea of leaving him and Noelle behind for work but with his support knew that it was the right choice for her life. Most summers and special occasions she flies home to visit, or just whenever she can make it back there.

















    Sadie Combes



    Elian's Mom. No longer struggling to make ends meet thanks to the funds that Elian and Raina sends home to her and her husband, but she still has a lot of habits from being broke that she holds onto. She and Elian are still not close and she often wonders why that is since she doesn't realize how she effected her children during their childhoods. She still occasionally babysits for extra cash even though she largely considers herself 'retired.'

















    Zachary Combes



    Elian's dad. Much like the old diner he's been drinking black coffee at since the 80s, Zachary hasn't changed much. He still works the same A/C repair gigs even though his children wish he wouldn't. Much like his wife he's pretty stuck in the past, except when it comes to the kids. He feels that they're not grateful for what he and Sadie sacrificed to raise them, though unlike her he doesn't mind that they're not close.

Existing in the medical field can be exhausting. The burdens and the pain that goes along with seeing human suffering can easily break a person. Seoyun is a very sensitive individual; but, her drive to be a doctor overrides all of her emotions. Empathy is a huge part of her treatment. She refuses to treat anyone cruelly or ignore their needs whenever they address her. Loss is very difficult and she isn't ashamed of her capacity to cry whenever she has to address family members about the loss of an individual. Most people, especially her supervisors, have told her she is too weak to handle the harsh realities of working in a hospital. These claims have only encouraged her to put her all into her work, knowing that a doctor who empathizes with their patients and understands how terrifying their lack of health can be is a good one.

Outside of work, Seoyun is a very bubbly woman. She's warm and encourages people to be themselves. She doesn't have very many friends outside of her work beside her cousin and by extension, his friends. Loneliness is not a foreign concept to her. However, she knows that her work is her life. The criticism of her work ethic is one she tends to brush off. Socializing tends to be on the back burner when it comes to assisting others. Some would call her flirtatious as well; however, she tends to deny that. Flirting isn't fun to her now that she sees

Seoyun Lee was born in South Korea in 1996. With whispy brown hair and dark eyes that took in the world with wonder, she was a beautiful baby. Her parents were fond of the compliments she received and the smiles she brought to her family members. Her grandmother was especially fond of her and the pair became inseparable. Her infancy was spent amongst happy company. When her parents worked, she bounced between aunts and uncles, cousins and family friends, grandparents, and the like. Her mother was most often alongside her, content to dote on her daughter. Her father, however, was a very busy man. His position as head surgeon at their local hospital kept him busy enough that he rarely got to see the milestones Seoyun achieved. Although her mother acted indifferent to the whole thing, it was evident her husband's absence was noticed.

Despite his lack of time, Seoyun and her father grew extremely close. She adored him wholeheartedly -- and he her. Her childhood was spent excelling in her classes, emboldened by her father's remarks about her good grades. It wasn't until secondary school, however, that she discovered her interest in becoming a doctor.

Eunseok Jung is a reminder of her old life -- and the reason why she is not a wife. He was her boyfriend for several years in her teens and early twenties. Although she adored him completely, she was restless. Their opinions were varied and they didn't see eye-to-eye when it came to her attending medical school. His expectations were she would leave school after she could work as a nurse and then become a housewife in her thirties while he continued to climb the ladder at his law firm. That lifestyle just didn't suit her. It all came to a head after she discovered the affair he had been having with one of her friends. She packed up all her stuff in South Korea and applied for residency at the Silver Sycamore Medical Center. When her work visa was accepted as well as her residency, she moved and left him behind.

After she told him about Eunseok's affair, he was the first to say she should leave him and apply for residency abroad. Søren is, in a lot of ways, seen as an overtly positive man. Outgoing and boisterous, he's always one to crack jokes and keep things bright. Of course, he wears his heart on his sleeve. It comes with a good amount of outbursts; but, these are always short-lived. It's easy for him to brush aside bigger physical emotions to display the more pleasant, less-emotional version of himself. For the most part, he always wears a bright smile and has a laid-back attitude. He believes that the universe has his back, in one way or another, though he pretends to avoid all things metaphysical like the plague.

He's sure, though, that things will work themselves out eventually. While he was raised to be logical, Søren has always been more on the emotional side of things. He doesn't see the point of holding back one's feelings after undergoing all that he did as a child. With this comes the urge to make art; Søren has always been drawn to all things musical and particularly loves playing the guitar to express his feelings. It's his own form of poetry.

history









Born in London, England, Søren comes from a well-off family filled with incredibly smart individuals. Because his parents couldn’t allow their son to not be skilled in some form of the arts, they began teaching him the piano at age five. He was surprisingly adept at it, and so his parents hounded him with practice throughout his childhood. The structure they implemented, and the ideas they filled him with were his main motivation. The need for greatness as he progressed from proficient to masterful to a protege was noted by mainly powerful people in the music industry. His drive swept throughout the entirety of his interests -- school, tennis, piano, and all his other extracurriculars. All of this meant his parents assumed he was made for the spotlight. He wasn’t allowed to do much else other than practice or study and his friends consisted of family friends who were just as arrogant as their parents and as self-critical as him.

His relationship with his father was far less strained than his relationship with his mother who was the primary pusher. His father was far more relaxed, believing Søren had already proved himself with what he’d already accomplished rather than needing him to keep improving. His father often took him out on their private boat; which is why being around the ocean is one of the things that can actually make Søren happy. The ocean is a metaphor he feels towards himself. Rough on the outside and filled with calm on the inside. Sea life also fascinated him; for a long time, he dreamed of giving up his achievements with the piano to become a marine biologist.

By age eleven, he was slowly beginning to experience burnout. His mother continued to push him to be his 'best' self, over and over again. His adolescence was spent feeling constant stress. It wasn't until he was around fifteen that he decided to set his foot down. The fallout was extreme. It damaged his relationship with his family and set him back when it came to school. However, it was also liberating. All that time he had spent divided amongst his extracurriculars was now open. He read, took walks, and listened to music that he actually enjoyed. The individuality was wonderful. Two years passed and by seventeen, he was self-sufficient and ready to move out on his own to continue finding his independence. He applied to as many unis as he could for a degree in marine biology. He ended up finding a school in America and within the span of a few months, he was living in a different country.

The marine biology degree didn't end up working in the long run. He had too little money and he refused to apply for a scholarship for his ability to play piano. He ended up hopping from job to job, not entirely sure where he wanted to be in life. Security seemed like a decent career, he decided. He couldn't scoff at the pay and working nights tended to be a lot more eventful than he anticipated. He ended up at Silver Sycamore about four years ago whenever he was in between jobs. He used to work in one of the wings near the intensive care units. He was promoted several months ago to lead one section of the security team. He still patrols; but, is more often called to assist different residents with more difficult patients.

Rana Adel is his sister and his most avid supporter. Out of everyone in his family, she is one of the only people he still communicates with. Although they have had their issues in the past, their bond is as strong as ever. He intends to travel back to England within the next year to visit her and his newborn nephew.

















Seymore Reyes



His wonderful, perfect roommate who also tends to be the biggest pain in his ass. Their dynamic is complicated; they're playful despite the fact that they bicker incessantly. Søren doesn't have any issues with the guy -- and Seymore hassles him over the dishes, how many people he has over, etc. Meaning, he is very much a terrible roommate to Seymore and the guy forgives him anyway.

















Athena Roosevelt.



Athena Roosevelt serves as his pseudo-parent ever since he moved to the United States. She would classify herself as more of a mentor to him; but, it's more than that. He loves her a whole lot (something he would never admit to) and enjoys her exasperation towards his antics whenever they visit one another.

Iggy is a snappy and headstrong woman who refuses to be bossed around. When she arrives on an emergency scene she may not be the captain of her medical crew but she runs the show like she may as well be. She's got a job to do and won't let anything distract her or get in her way, but she knows that teamwork is what really gets the job done and she's open to ideas or collaborating to find the best treatment for her patients. As long as the ideas are good ones. She enjoys being right as much as the next girl but she's always ready to put her ego aside for the sake of the greater good. Even if she really would rather not. Sometimes she gets caught up in the flow of wanting to get the job done fast instead of perfect, unless it comes to the detriment of whatever she's working on. "Quick and dirty" is the motto she was taught by both her father and her work mentor, both of them taught her everything she knows. Off the clock she can usually be found hiding in her apartment among the dozens of houseplants and candles with her cat, and a blunt in her hand. Though she's also been known to hit up the club scene around town when she's actually got the energy to do so. But with the hours she works, that's getting rarer and rarer to see.

Born as the second eldest in a family of four girls, Iggy was raised in the heart of Texas to a Mexican American father and a African American mother, Andreas and Eliana Iglesias. Playing in the yard on the dried grass and until the lighting bugs came out was the norm for her and her sisters, Leonora, Margarethe, and Dorinda, for their entire childhoods. Eliana was a stay at home mom who sold pottery for extra income. Iggy often spent rainy days or extra hot ones where she couldn't play outside in her mother's studio making pots and mugs. Andreas on the other hand was a captain of a local fire station. Iggy was fascinated by her father's place of work and how fast paced it was, sometimes letting her come by after school so long as she kept out of the way. He was the more cerebral of her two parents and would help her with her homework, starting that 'get it done, get it done fast' mindset that she carries to this day, though she was able to maintain pretty good grades in school, as well as making time to run track and field.

Towards the end of high school she decided to follow after her father and become a first responder. After graduation she went right into a paramedic training program and went right into working shortly after. She worked in Texas for many years, until her father's station was closed down due to local funding being cut and he was forced into retirement instead of being allowed to transfer to a new station or fight for his station to stay open. Though at Andreas' retirement party he expressed that he was not upset about his early retirement, that he had no regrets about his career. He did however mention that he held a desire for his children to go out and experience life on their own away from their hometown unlike he did, at least for a few years. Iggy was the only one who agreed to follow his wish, her sisters being too established in Texas to leave. On an impulse she quit her job and put out a request for employment at anywhere else, as long as it was far away. As fate would have it she landed in Silver Sycamore.

While she misses her hometown, and her family, she's been enjoying her time at the button so far and is excited to see what the future has in store for her while she's here.

Eliana Iglesias



Iggy's mom and local potter in her home town. Always supportive of all her daughters and proud of them as well. Being a mom means she worries about all of her kids, but especially Iggy since she knows how demanding being a paramedic can be. Now without being able to constantly check in on her daughter since she's across the country means a lot more worry

















Andres Iglesias



Iggy's dad, husband to Eliana, and former fire captain. Growing up with him was kinda like growing up with a tornado in the house, he was always half-finishing projects and moving onto the next without putting the polish on the last one. But that's not to say he ever half-assed anything, but with a job in emergencies and four kids at home sometimes just fall by the wayside. He's very excited about Iggy finally getting out of the nest and it looking forward to seeing her bloom.

















Leonora Iglesias



Iggy's older sister and her only sister who's married, she married her high school sweetheart. She still lives in Texas near her parents for her kids to have easy access to their 'Lala' and 'Pops.' As well as due to the fact that she's been teaching at the local high school as an social studies teacher for the last ten years.

















Margarethe Iglesias



Iggy's first younger sister. She's a bassist in a band playing around the Austin scene, mostly alternative and punk-y. She's always been attracted to the nightlife since she got her first fake ID and started sneaking out. She's sort of the 'problem child' in the family although her sisters and parents have always been very supportive of her lifestyle choices, mostly...


















Dorinda Iglesias



Iggy's youngest sister and recent art school graduate. She's currently working at a local art museum in exchange for studio space since her room at home is pretty much full of all her old projects. She uses her family and surroundings as inspiration for her works but is still waiting to get recognized and taken seriously beyond being just another kid trying to make it on the art scene.

While she's usually in her uniform, when off duty she enjoys the look of streetwear and functional styles. Straight legs jeans and neutral colors, with pops of brighter colors throughout her wardrobe, are all staples for her. Accessorized with gold jewelry and work boots or sneakers and you have a complete outfit. Her hair alternates between being neatly styled and more 'go with the flow' depending on how many minutes she overslept her alarm.

Maybe it’s because she was constantly under threat of death growing up but Dot doesn’t like wasting time. She’s quick to act and solve problems which is what drew her into working in the Emergency ward. She’s relentlessly kind and generous, she does not take refusals for her help lightly. And while kind, like most Emergency nurses she isn’t completely nice. She’ll make sure you have a coffee and a warm meal to eat, but won’t hesitate to rip you to shreds if your stitches are sloppy. Her patients love her and her coworkers respect her. She has an undeniably hot temper, she sticks to her morals. Her respect is easily given but just as easily torn away. She holds onto grudges like they’re the only thing keeping her alive. And while she can understand her being wrong medically, she believes that she’s never wrong about social situations.

Dot hates change and mess, she keeps her files in a very specific order. Part of her believes that if she keeps certain things under control, then nothing can really get that bad. Dot is not prone to moving houses or making drastic lifestyle changes, she in fact still lives in her childhood home. She’s a chronic worrier with a penchant for superstitions.

Dorothy was born in the neighborhood of Sugar Hill in 1993. She was the third born and the baby of the family. She was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis early on at the age of 2, her parents had been confused but ultimately couldn’t afford to take her to the doctor if it was just going to be a cold. It was a neighbor's sister who recognized the disease, which hospital tests ended up confirming. Her illness kept her inside most of the time, cooped up with a neighbor or one of her older siblings while her parents worked so that they could afford her treatment. She spent the most amount of the time with her elder brother, Kennedy, her sister the middle child Madeleine spent as much time away from the home. Kennedy took on the brunt of raising his younger sisters, something Dot still feels bad about.

For her twelfth birthday Dot got a copy of Inkspell and a spot on the Lung Transplant list. Her condition while it had worsened never stopped Dot from trying to do what she wanted to do. Which at this age was to go to school. Kennedy was 18 and attending the Borough of Manhattan Community College for Computer Information Services, something that once he got his associates, he could get a good paying job. Madeleine also got herself a retail job, less from a desire to work, but more of a desire to get out of the house. It was a shock to no one when two years later, she moved out with her boyfriend at the time. Dot was still on the waiting list, lugging her oxygen tank around. She wasn’t able to work, not with all of her appointments, so she spent most of her time focusing on school and making the forty minute bus ride down to Sycamore for her treatments.

Finally when Dot was sixteen after a bout in the hospital she got the lung transplant she so desperately needed. The family was financially still struggling, things began to turn around. She was able to start working, and when she wasn’t working she was studying. Her years spent in and out of the hospital had inspired the young girl. She knew that she was going to work in the hospital, no matter what. In this time her sister gave birth to a beautiful baby boy Robin. Everything was smooth sailing, Dot got a full ride scholarship to NYU’s nursing program, she completed in the four years and began looking for work. Madeleine had been spending more time with the family since Robin was born, and their parents moved out of New York leaving Dot and Kennedy to pick up their rent. When Dot was 24 she finally began working at Sycamore in the Emergency department. Time seemed to just fly by with Chanukkahs, Halloweens, and Birthdays. Out of seemingly nowhere, Madeleine showed up on Dot’s doorstep with Robin and a whole lot of legal papers. Dorothy for reasons unexplained to her had to take custody of her 14 year old nephew. That night was also the last night she had heard from her sister. Despite the myriad of questions she was left with, Dot has stayed determined to do right by her nephew every way possible.

Edith Haase



Dot and her mum have had a better relationship as of late, it was hard with her always working. Edith is a smart woman and currently works as an administrative assistant at the public school in the town she moved to. Dot had a more stable relationship with her mother rather than her father, but still feels like she missed out on a normal mother daughter relationship because of her illness.

















Andrew Haase



A good yet strange man, worked whatever office job he could get to keep his family afloat. He much prefers a quiet town to the bustling city. Dot likes her father, she just doesn't really know him. They've definitely bonded more in recent years but the distance during her childhood really impacted their relationship.

















Kennedy Haase



He filled a parental role far too young and that's something Dot is trying to pay him back for to this day. Dot is incredibly close to her older brother, he's her most trusted confidante and the best roommate she could've ever asked for.

















Madeleine Haase



Madeleine was a glass child, the sibling of a sick kid. And while she doesn't exactly blame Dot their relationship has always been strained. Even before she ran off she was dropping Robin off either at the house, or at the hospital to be watched.
















Robin Haase



Dot has a tenuous relationship with her nephew to say the least. Everything was fine until his mother ran off and left him in her care. Nowadays he wants nothing to do with his aunt despite her attempts to bring them closer. Dot thinks he might know more about why his mother ran off.
