She was thirteen years old. It was winter, the roughest winter she'd ever seen. They were hiding in a damp alleyway from the lashing rain and freezing cold. She was shivering and her fingers and lips were turning blue. Then, Blaze nudged her. He was holding out a cigarette to her. She took it from him, looking at it curiously. He'd always discouraged smoking, as had their parents. Their father had punished Blaze for it. He lit it for her with shaking fingers. They smoked together; blowing smoke and flicking ash at each other. The rain cleared up quickly after that.

Worst Memory:

It had been one of those nights. It started out poorly when she was woken suddenly by Blaze climbing into her bed. She could hear her father yelling downstairs. She sat up and went to turn the light on but Blaze grabbed her by the wrist.

"Don't." he said. That was when she looked closer. There were red marks on the left side of her brother's face. Neither of them needed to say anything. They just held each other close and Sophia can remember that her pillowcase was salty with tears by morning.

Personality:

Sophia is heavily sarcastic the majority of the time, to hide how she really feels. She claims to hate "everyone" but really, she'd hate to be alone. She doesn't like to be stared at or judged by other people. She almost always has her earphones in and is reluctant to talk to people. She doesn't like "touchy feely stuff" and doesn't like to talk about her "feelings".

Past:

When they were eleven, their mother died. Their father immediately turned to drink and ignored his children altogether. Blaze and Sophia only had each other. Their father was also often abusive, more so to Blaze then he was to Sophia. Eventually, they ran away from home together.

They survived on their own for a while but eventually were caught stealing from a store. The police were called and then, they were taken to the orphanage. Sophia resents her brother because he was the one that got them caught. She blames him for getting them stuck in the orphanage.

It was sunny. Their father was out for once, instead of slouching on the couch yelling at them. So, they were both out in the backyard, enjoying the sunshine. Sophia was wearing a crown that she'd made from daisies as well as several bracelets made from threaded grass. She'd been humming to herself as she worked on something. And Blaze had been watching her, wondering what she was thinking. Eventually, Sophia held out what she'd made. She'd hammered a tiny hole in a pebble and had hung it on a string. She hung it around Blaze's neck.

"It's a promise stone..." she'd said, "A promise that we'll always be together..."

Worst Memory:

He didn't want to go to school that day. Not the day after his mother's funeral, not while he had two red slap marks across his face. Sophia had identical marks on her arms and face, angry bruises that were much too obvious. She saw her brother looking and adjusted her jacket to hide the bruises on her arms. The day only got worse. They only recieved pitying looks and at lunch, Blaze got shoved into a wall and scraped his face. He was too weak to fight back. From that point on, he was an easy target for bullies. Because he never hit back.

Personality:

Blaze often comes across as intimidating as he is very tall and very quiet. He's kind of shy and afraid of almost everyone but he'd never admit it. He has to be strong for his sister, who he cares for deeply and will do anything to protect- if only she'd do the same for him. He's not particularly intelligent or particularly strong but he is very loyal and kind.

Past:

"Emily Sosa, long, silky auburn hair that smelled faintly of Herbal Essences Shampoo, enchanting emerald eyes that made me weak. She was—no, she is the best thing that ever happened me. I remember, it was Freshmen year, underneath the bleachers, she... She kissed me with such love and passion. I felt warmth all over and for some reason... I felt happiness. She made me whole that day. She full filled my deepest fantasy. That happiness lasted for months—actually... It lasted for a year. And the feelings she gave me. I'll never forget."

"I ran down to the pier when I was about eleven. My sister and I were playing hide and seek in the dark. No big deal, just playing a typical game. But, this time was different, I decided to wander onto the docks. I saw a murky reflection of myself, so I kneeled down, closer to the water and something pushed me in. I couldn't swim, nobody had taught me. So, I just floundered in the water, screaming and crying. I remember the water being ice cold and more I tried to swim, the more I would sink. So, I just gave in... But, luckily I was saved by a by-passer."

Past: They're parents just couldn't take care of them, so they just lived with their Aunt Rebecca. Which was pretty nice up until she was about fifteen, which is her age now.

A young memory of his whole family together playing catch in the park. He remembers clearly that he teamed with his father and won the girls 6-1.

Worst Memory

When his father left. Ethan tried to stop him, grabbing onto his suitcase, but he was only flung off and then comforted by Iris. That is one of the reasons why they are so close.

When he was 6, his father walked out of their lives forever. It was horrible for Ethan, mostly because he had been more of a Daddy's boy than Mummy's. He cried for two weeks, refusing to go to school, only coaxed to eat by his twin Iris. He got over it though, and gradually, he developed a deep burning hatred for his father. His mother died of cancer when they were 13, and that's when their father decided to make an appearance, coming to get them with his new wife. But they refused, calling him an asshole and running away. He didn't care that much, he had kids of his own anyway. They've been out alone, stealing to survive and living in an abandoned warehouse for 2 years.
