Neon Valkyrie
She Who Is Called I Am
Used to be only criminals wore masks.
Fighting for justice, for what was right meant putting on a badge and trying your best not to have to shoot anyonre ... it didn't used to mean putting everything you care about in harm's way.
That was before things got so desperate, before things changed. Couldn't tell you when exactly it happened, what precisely caused it; Economy drying up, settling in the hands of the rich. Population boom, people stacked on top of one another in low-quality housing. Maybe we just forgot how to believe in those things that keep us decent when life gets hard. Whatever the case, things HAVE changed. Criminality is a way of life, it's our culture. Do what you can get away with, help only yourself, take what you can while you can, the rules only apply when you're being watched. A culture that makes charlatans and thugs of us all. The police couldn't cope. They were outnumbered a thousand to one, and half of them were having their palms greased, equipped with dated gear, upholding dated laws designed by the corrupt.
Then it happened; The Age of the Superhero, the anonymous vigilante. Some were brutal, some were civic-minded, most were feared, especially among the criminals they hunted. Some were individuals with a lifetime of skills to rely on, some were born with impossible abilities, some just had more willpower than sense. Whatever the case, there was a new force for justice in the streets, a light to push back the darkness. For a while it seemed like things were getting better. Every day there was a new story in the news, on the internet, images of masked or caped or armoured individuals dispensing justice where the law failed to, directed by some higher morality, or an insatiable thirst for vengeance.
Funny thing though, whether for better or for worse, the universe has a way of maintaining balance. Motion and stillness, heat and cold, light and darkness. You know the only difference between a Superhero and a Supervillain? Their motivations. I don't know how we forgot ... forgot that only the strongest people, given power, will use it for good. Only the few. And so just as the age of the Superhero began, so too did the age of the Supervillain. The world recoiled.
Now things are worse than ever before. Crime has flooded back into the streets as the battles of Gods and Demons rage overhead, letting the city crumble while deciding the fate of the world. Every day a new disaster, a new nemesis against the light, a new force for evil. The police protect only their own, while private security firms, little more than soldiers of fortune, protecting those who can buy security. Everyone else just suffers, living life between victimizations. The world is become a dark place ... will you take up the torch of Justice, hold it high, and brazenly cry; Come Get Some.
Woohoo, you made it through all of THAT, whatever that was. You still alright champ? Good to hear. So here's the more succinct version; I want to run a gritty superhero RP with however many people we can get. I'm hoping to keep it to like ... a post a day, 4 a week at least. Characters can be inspired by anything, dupes are allowed, but I expect you to keep characters fairly weak ... you're Kick-Ass ... or like, Luke Cage, not Superman. That being said, powers are allowed, with limitations, and the more powers you have, the weaker each one will be. Also, gritty means dark, violent, brooding, even a bit mature, but we will have nothing that breaks the ToS in this RP, y'hear?! I think that's all ... Interested?
