The Ryken Adventurers Guildhall was a hub of constant activity, but today, it was nearly bursting at the seams. A wall-sized board displayed notices for work, from mundane escort missions to high-stakes monster hunts. Yet one notice drew most of the attention, its bold lettering impossible to ignore:

"URGENT REQUEST: INVESTIGATORS AND COMBATANTS NEEDED."

A crowd of adventurers clustered around the posting, murmuring with excitement and unease. The details were both sparse and unsettling:

A sinkhole of unprecedented size has swallowed the village of Greystone overnight. Survivors from nearby areas report strange phenomena. The Guild seeks skilled individuals to investigate the sinkhole, ensure the safety of surrounding settlements, and uncover the source of these events. Reward: 50 silver rykes per participant, with additional compensation for actionable findings.

Edvar
Edvar.jpg

At the far end of the hall, Guildmaster Edvar—a grizzled half-orc clad in a mix of well-worn armor and a crimson Guild cloak—stood atop a raised dais. His booming voice carried over the clamor:

“Listen up! The reports coming out of Greystone are unlike anything we’ve seen. This isn’t just some bandit raid or monster nest. Whatever caused that sinkhole is big, and we need the best of you to get to the bottom of it—literally.”

He paused, scanning the room, his sharp eyes daring anyone to back out. “Caravans carrying survivors are heading to Greystone’s edge now. If you’re interested, make your way to the guild's quartermasters, sign up, and prepare to leave by dawn tomorrow. This is high-risk work, but the pay’s worth it. Just don’t say I didn’t warn you.”

Around the hall, conversations erupted in every corner. Some debated the nature of the incident—elemental disruption? Ancient curse? Rogue summoning magic? Others were already forming parties, scanning the room for capable allies.

A table near the guild’s hearth had been set up for additional details. A young guild scribe, looking overwhelmed by the crowd, frantically scribbled names onto a growing list of volunteers. Next to her stood a weathered adventurer offering survival tips to first-timers, clearly relishing the attention.

Guiseppe
Guiseppe.jpg

Meanwhile, an older human merchant was arguing with a guild official about the fate of his trade wagons last seen traveling near Greystone, his voice rising above the general din: “Forget the silver—I’ve got heirlooms on that blasted route! If any of you find them, I’ll make it worth your while, I swear it!”

The sense of urgency was palpable. The mystery of Greystone—and the promises of silver—hung over the crowd like a storm cloud, crackling with potential. As the sign-ups grew, the question remained: would this be the opportunity of a lifetime, or would the depths swallow these adventurers whole, as they had the village?

El-Melloi's Mansion

Earlier that day...

_a9940075-e9ff-4f9d-a982-a1db02f10e74.jpg

The morning rays had peered through the window of Adelhein's chambers at a very early hour, not even the dark velvety curtains could stop the piercing light. The young magus turned on the bed, trying to shield himself from the brightness and hopefully get a few more hours of sleep. For all his commitment and desire of attaining great heights, one fact didn't change: the teenager was not a morning person.

But his attempt was frustrated with the double doors of his chambers being opened and closed after a trio walking inside of it.

"Now, now, a king in the making can't really let the day escape him like that. Free indulgence will come after the sovereignty is properly secured." Gilgamesh was the first to speak, an amused smile gracing her lips. The sunlight reflected against her golden armor, further adding to the impossibility of ignoring her presence.

"She is right, Master. There is much to be done to further your own position above these weaklings and your name the prestige it deserves." Artoria followed quickly, not missing a beat, her expression stoic as always. And, differently from the golden one's armor, her pitch-black one absorbed the light which reached it, making it glimmer almost ominously.

For all their differences and agendas, pushing Adelhein's forward was a common goal between both Servants.

The third member of this intrusion was a mercurial maid, carrying clean, folded robes.

"Fine, fine! I'm getting up..." Knowing that there was nothing he could do about it, Adelhein threw the sheet aside and got up from the expansive bed. And, snatching the robes, marched behind a dressing screen.

While still not happy with not getting more hours of sleep, it wasn't long until he was fully dressed and heading downstairs towards the dinning room.

Dinning Room.png

There, all those who decided to stay in his mansion would have had access to a varied and rich breakfast.

Ryken Adventurers Guild
Was it fortune, destiny or merely happenstance that made Adelhein be at the Ryken Adventurers Guild when such a posting was made available? The young magus was unable to answer that question, his going to the Guild only happening thanks to both Demeter and Scarlett's passing comments on how working with them might be a very effective way to spread the influence of his name and faction. There was something else about helping people, but he didn't particularly care for that.

His Servants, Artoria and Gilgamesh, had practically pushed away the crowd as they walked into the Guild, remaining close to the teenager to make sure no one approached him too freely.

"A sudden sinkhole? Now, that is something not even I remember of having witnessed. And I have seen much." Gilgamesh commented to the group, her crimson eyes narrowing. Upon hearing the hypothesis that came from the mongrels' mouths: from natural to a summoning, her lips showed the faintest of smiles. "Looks like this world has something to keep me... entertained. Besides you that is, my dear Adelhein." She finished her sentence with her attention turned to the young magus.

Artoria, who had been away from battle for more than she would have liked, felt the excitement bubbling inside of her, even if her stoical mask remained unchanged. Yet, the gauntleted hand which rested on top of the pommel of her sword closed around it, a fleeting betrayal of her eagerness to coat her blade in blood. "Master, this looks like the perfect opportunity to advance your goals. Will we take on this request?"

"Indeed we will. It will also serve to test what we have practiced so far and apply it to a real situation." His answer most likely didn't surprise any of the group. He himself was excited, despite the sluggish morning. "Let's head to the quartermaster and sign up." Adelhein added, looking at his apprentices.

The Cat
1734708654627.jpeg

The guild hall sat in its usual state of bustling activity, with adventurers coming and going, merchants peddling wares, and the faint clatter of practice weapons echoing from the training yard. But just outside the hall, perched on the sun-warmed stone steps, was its most steadfast occupant: a cat.

It wasn’t clear who the cat belonged to, or if it belonged to anyone at all. With sleek fur black as night and piercing golden eyes, it seemed far too dignified to claim ownership over. Most of the guild members simply called it "Shadow," though the merchants whispered it had a dozen names, each given by a different adventurer passing through.

Shadow's daily activities were a mix of calculated laziness and occasional bursts of energy. Even as the hall seemed more active than ever, the cat remained uninterested. Instead deciding to clean himself by licking his paw and brushing it over his face repeatedly.

"H-here kitty kitty..." Aqua didn't seems to be too enthusiastic about coming to the adventurer guild, but she came along anyway. She wanted to believe that she had outgrown her past self and wouldn't repeat the same mistake of spending half of the time running around in panic but its clear that she's still nervous about it.

She would let the others handling the quest they're going to take though, she trusted them to take the most suitable one for the group. Aqua instead had been distracting herself by trying to give some treats to the black cat that had been loitering in the guild. She gently extended her hand forward, offering a piece of shredded chicken breast. A small part of her lunch that she cooks herself in the dorm's kitchen with [Domestic Art F].

‘Shadow’ was no stranger to free food and would gladly accept, stretching out his neck and body to sniff the chicken for a moment before gingerly taking it from the girl and lowering his head to the ground to munch away. After finishing the chicken he raised his head back up and let out a soft meow of gratitude and greed, looking and sniffing around for more food.

‘Shadow’ stood up and arched his back forward, stretching down onto his front legs before marching forward and rubbing against Aqua's leg, purring the entire time. He has learned that being cute often leads to more treats. He looked up to her with his golden eyes and released another meow.

Spoiled Bread Spoiled Bread

Demeter stirred to life not long after the rising sun’s rays began to peek through the blinds to her bedroom window. With a yawn, she slowly sat up; covers falling away to reveal that she slept completely nude beneath the sheets. She scratched her side and, before she even had a chance to get out of bed-

-a robotic butler burst into the room and raced over to her bedside.

She leaned back, eyes wide, ready to blast the ever-loving shit outta this invader before it could attack… but the construct simply paused, motionless; a humming sound emanating from its chassis for a moment before it spoke.

“Wellness overview scan: complete,” Demeter’s brow furrowed in confusion as she listened to the strange machine, “How are you doing this morning, Mistress Demeter?”

Her eyes flickered away from the machine for a moment before she met… what she assumed to be its eyes once more.

“...Fine?”

“Wonderful.”

The machine began to scurry away and Demeter’s sights slowly drifted towards her window. She yawned once more and turned her sights to the window; the rhythmic clanking of the machine’s footsteps filling the room all the while. A heavy plop shook the bed as something mildly heavy was dropped onto the quilt over her legs. Then, a shadow slowly grew to loom over the young fae.

She turned to catch sight of the maid holding open a blouse as though it were prepared to force it over her head.

“Would you like to wear this red blouse with golden accents today? The contrast of the red against your skin, coupled with the accents that match your eye color shou-”

“No thank you.”

The machine paused for a moment, folded the blouse with a startling speed, then grabbed another from off of the bed.

“Perhaps this green-”

“No thanks."

Another.

“How about this tan colored-”

“No.”

“Perhaps a standard white-”

“I don't want a shirt!”

“Mistress Demeter! Master Adelhein has chosen you as his second. You have a standard to uphold. You must make yourself decent before-”

Somewhere along the way, Demeter began to summon petals that slowly wrapped around her and bonded together into a covering that concealed anything that might've been considered inappropriate. The maid paused once more.

“Recalibrating…”

“Would you like me to show you to the bathroom where you can brush your teeth?”

“Where I can what?”

“Brush your teeth, Madame.”

“... what??”

“Have you not been practicing proper dental hygiene l, Madame!?”

“...no-no?”

“Oh dear! Mistress Demeter, proper dental hygiene is of the utmost importance. Without it, you could develop cavities, lose teeth, contract horrible infections and even die!”

“WHAT???”

“Ma'am, may I request an urgent dental examination?”

“...okay.”

“Open your mouth for inspection, please”

As soon as Demeter exposed those pearly whites, the construct rushed over and began her examination.

“Oh goodness! Saliva PH: 9.3. Dangerously Alkaline. Enzymatic Concentration: Dangerously high. Oh dear…”

The young dryad started getting nervous.

“Cavities Detected: Zero. Enamel Decay: Zero percent. Tissue swelling and discoloration? False. Dental bleeding? False. Bacterial presence: Negligible,” the construct slowly began to back away and Demeter closed her mouth, “Recalibrating. Updating homeostatic profile for [Subject: Demeter]”

A heavy silence hung over the room as she awaited the machine's verdict.

“Great job taking care of those pearly whites!” the construct spoke, as though it were reading from a pre-written script, “Please join us downstairs when you're ready for breakfast.”

“R-right.”

—-------------------------------------------------------------------

After a mildly unsettling morning, Demeter was met with a gratifying surprise that, honestly, warmed her heart a bit.

She had suggested that those in Magno Sapiente Victori join her for a question at the Adventurer's Guild, and the idea of going on adventures with them excited her, but she didn't actually expect for it to happen so quickly. Knowing that they listened to her put a smile on her face. And yet, despite the whole thing being her idea, a few new concerns found their way into the back of her mind that she'd never fretted over on any of her previous adventures. The thought of someone getting hurt, dying or otherwise meeting a horrible fate never bothered her too much. It was simply part of the job. But then, prior to today, she'd always signed up for quests with random people that she doubted she'd ever see again. Not, well...

...not with people that she even remotely considered to be her kin.

A few of the maids words echoed in the back of The Dryad's mind as she sat at one of the guild's tables alongside her companions. She watched Adelhein chatting with his servants. She watched Aqua playing with a cute little cat. She watched Guildmaster Edvar describe the dangers of the quest. Then, she nodded and whispered the maid's words to herself.

"I have a standard to uphold now."

Adelhein's words brought her back to the present moment. And when Gilgamesh took interest in the sinkhole quest, the young fae had no objections.

“On it.”

Demeter knew this place well. She began making her way over to The Guildmaster to sign up for the quest, but the shouting of an older gentleman drew her attention away from him along the way. The dryad wasn't one to pass up opportunity, after all.

“Well, why not both?” Demeter made her way over to Mr. Giuseppe, extending a hand to shake with a warm smile drawn across her face, “I’ll keep an eye out for your heirlooms. Anything in particular I should be looking for while I'm in the pit?”

Aureus Albion

It had been an odd couple of days for Aureus. Which went from homeless, to live in a mansion. That said, he still second-guessed his actual worthiness to live under the tutelage of Adelhein. Which made him anxious of leaving his room much, as much as he wished to take a trip to the library or other visually pleasing areas of the estate he was not aware of. He only left his room to train, eat, and quick baths when he was sure nobody else would want to use it. Be it in the dead of night, or far before the sun rose for the day.

Aureus finally showed himself for something other than the activities that forced him out of his room. Having bathed quite a few hours ago, he spent a few hours trying to figure out some details about runic transmutation and the result of meditating his way into his strange to small bits of memories from the dreams of light he had. Which were now more lucid and frequent.

A mercurial maid brought him yet another set of clothes. After the maid left, Aureus turned off his lantern and went to inspect it. He once again felt a mix of deep gratitude and a sense of not being worth all that he was being given. As he fit his clothes, he silently thanked his teacher for being so welcoming.

Since they were heading out, Aureus decided to finally don the glasses he was given. Apparently they allowed his eyes to rest.

The guildhall was uncomfortably packed. But his group certainly made their way around with ease, much to his relief. Demeter took off to discuss matters with a struggling merchant, while Aqua picked up the attention of a cat, or upon further looking, the opposite was the case. Adelhein made his way to the quartermaster. Aureus silently followed, trying his best to pick up on whatever he could hear that might be useful to know about this mess.

If it was going to be an Adelhein magic faction operation, of course Scarlett was going to partake. She would have woken up early, and been training diligently as well as focusing on academics in the time since they first started using team up moves.
As for Scarlett she strode confidently into the Ryken Adventurers Guild Hall like she owned the place, the way she carried herself suggesting a bit of a higher class socially than many who they'd probably see. This was contrasted by her inclinations to be 'less of a lady' when she felt the situation called for it as her mother might say.

For now she'd also stay near Adelhein and the others, it seemed like she wouldn't need to be marching up to people with how quick others were to act, Scarlett would probably fit in pretty well with Gilgamesh and Saber alter if she looked less magic student and more military garb. As ultimately she was also ready to keep him safe if need be from anyone who wanted to cause trouble, which thankfully likely wasn't going to be in the adventurer's place here, unless someone challenged someone to a duel or something, Scarlett had heard that was something you could do in Ryke too legally if both parties agreed, much like magic dueling was a thing back in Roran.

"Alright then! I'm with Demeter, let's see if we can't just make the most of what people need help here with! If there's anyone who can do it, it'll be Magno Sapiente Victori!" She'd grin.

Maybe if they did well enough they'd start getting some name recognition like other adventuring parties did sometimes around places, building up prestige and a reputation was certainly something she and Adelhein were mutually interested in, and being part of a renowned adventurer group was definitely one way to achieve that.

The energy in the Ryken Adventurers Guild continued to build as the group began to take their first steps toward signing up for the investigation. Conversations and movements intertwined in a vivid tapestry of life, with the faint smell of ale, ink, and leather filling the air.

At the quartermaster’s table, a grizzled elf in battle-worn leather armor glanced up from his clipboard as Adelhein and Aureus approached. His sharp eyes darted to Gilgamesh and Artoria flanking Adelhein and the other members of his group nearby. His gaze lingered for a moment on the Servants, perhaps recognizing them as seasoned fighters—or simply as an intimidating presence.

Quartermaster

“Signing up for the Greystone sinkhole quest, eh? You lot look like you might survive it.” The elf snorted, half in jest, though his voice carried a hint of warning. “Name of your party, if you’ve got one, and the number of members you’ll be registering.”

Guiseppe
Guiseppe.jpg

Nearby, Guiseppe was quick to take Demeter’s hand, gripping it firmly despite the tremble in his weathered fingers. His eyes lit up at her offer. “Bless you, miss! It’s my family chest I’m worried about—oak wood with brass fittings. And a journal inside, leather-bound and crimson red. Please, if you see it, I’ll pay what I can.” His voice wavered with desperation, his words almost drowned out by the hubbub around them.

Across the hall, Shadow basked in Aqua’s attention, still purring loudly as adventurers strode past. One or two threw her amused glances, though most were too focused on their own preparations. A young scribe stumbled over with an ink-stained sheet of parchment. She gestured at the cat with a sheepish grin. “Shadow’s kind of our mascot, you know? Seems like he’s taken a liking to you. Maybe he’ll bring you luck in the depths.”

Scarlett’s confident stride caught the eye of several adventurers milling about. A few whispered among themselves, clearly noting her poise and the entourage she moved with. The name 'Magno Sapiente Victori' floated through the air, repeated quietly by those within earshot.

Edvar
Edvar.jpg

Guildmaster Edvar, still at his perch, began barking orders at a cluster of guild assistants. “Move it! Get those supply wagons ready to roll by dawn. We’ve got no time to waste!” He caught sight of Demeter, her unmistakable presence drawing his attention for a moment. He gave a curt nod of approval before turning back to the chaos.

The quest board still fluttered with notices, but the Guildhall’s focus had shifted entirely to Greystone. As the group made their moves—each in their own way—the weight of the task ahead loomed. Adventurers from across Ryke were signing up, and soon the path to the sinkhole would be crowded with wagons, warriors, and whispers of what lay beneath.

The caravan would leave at first light. The clock was ticking.

What would the group like to do before setting off?

“‘Might’? There is no ‘might’, we will survive it.” Artoria answered the quartermaster in a heartbeat, her golden piercing gaze locked onto the elf’s eyes, while her tone carried a tone of unwavering certainty.

Adelhein didn’t let the half-joking warning of the elf make him lose any confidence. He trusted that the group had the capability to deal with this problem, whatever it was. And, if they couldn’t, they would adapt to the circumstances. “We are the [Magno Sapient Victori],” he echoed Scarlett’s earlier words. “And we are seven in total: Adelhein El-Melloi von Breyer, Artoria, Gilgamesh, Demeter, Scarlett Ashford, Aqua Raines and Aureus Albion.”

While Adelhein had completed the registration of the group, Gilgamesh’s gaze kept shifting from the different groups who would also be embarking in that very same request. The appraising gaze would eventually return to Adelhein. “I hope this city has a big enough graveyard, unless they plan to let the fallen rest where they fall.” A hint of malice colored her words, clearly finding the others wanting.

“How are the clothes I picked up for you? Comfortable?” Turning his attention to Aureus, the young magus asked in a lower voice, before looking at him from head to toe. “Looking much better than before. I can’t let someone who represents me give off the wrong impression.” He added, appearing to be satisfied with the choice of garments.

“You are right, going above and beyond with something as big as this seems to be will likely speed up how quickly we, and our group, gets recognized.” Adelhein added to Scarlett’s words with the faintest of smiles present on his lips, while he watched Demeter deal with the old man, letting her handle it.

“We should acquire some torches for this request, wouldn’t want us to stumble in the dark. Can you think of any other supplies we might need it?” Adelhein asked the group, those who could hear him at least. The cost of preparedness would be measured now in coin, later in blood.

"Ah, so the n-name's Shadow." Aqua nodded at the passing scribe for telling the cat's name. She gave the cat a scratch below his chin, and then gave him a long repeated stroke that starts on his head, through his back and ends on the base of his tail. The soft fur and gentle purr calmed her heart and made her feels like she could face the dark underground better. Yet she couldn't find herself taking the cat into their mission, it would be a dangerous one, and she would feel overwhelming guilt if something happened to the cat.

"B-be a good cat and stay safe. OK?" She gave the cat another bigger chicken, gave him one last pat on the head before she stood up and joined the others. Seemed like they had finished the registration and now its time for them to prepare.

"R-rope would be good, I think. T-there also chance that we get split up and lost down there so a way to tell the direction like a compass can be good."
She chimed her suggestion.

1734966029588.jpeg

Shadow stretched lazily, his golden eyes glinting with a quiet intelligence as Aqua gave him one last pet. The larger piece of chicken she’d left behind was gone in a flash, but his gaze lingered on her retreating form. For a moment, he sat still, tail flicking, before deciding to follow Aqua.

He trailed the girl from a certain distance, expertly dodging all the boots of people still hustling around the guild hall. When she met up with the others Shadow trotted up and sat in front of Aqua, curling his tail around his paws so it didn't get stepped on. “Mrrrow.”

Demeter's eyes drifted downwards as she took the man's weathered hands.

For the moment, he fully captured her attention. She felt the tremble in his arm, heard the worry in his voice and, as she glanced back up, saw that spark of hope light up in his eye. Yet she said not a word on any of it; only tightening her grip to match his.

"A chest with oak wood and brass fittings," she repeated, "A journal with leather and crimson red. That shouldn't be hard to identify if I see it. I do have one question though..."

She loosened her grip and let her hand fall away from him.

"Does the chest, itself, have any value to you or just the journal inside? I'd rather travel as light as possible if me and my party are going to have to be climbing in and out of the sinkhole. Especially if we find something dangerous down there."

The more hands free and the less weight to tax their stamina, the better. Though honestly, regardless of his answer, there was a very real possibility that Demeter might just break the chest open and retrieve the journal inside for him if she did find it. A half-completed task was better than having completed no objectives at all.

"Oh, one other thing. I was going to ask Edvar, but maybe you can help me. Do you know any of the survivors who fled from the sinkhole? Or, better yet, any survivors that we could meet with on short notice? I heard a few people mention some 'strange phenomenon' when my party first walked in this morning. I'd like to know a little more about that from someone who saw it firsthand."

Demeter paused in thought for a moment before shrugging to herself.

"Well, if I can speak with them before nightfall, anyways. I am curious, but I've definitely gotta make sure I get a good night's rest before a quest like this..."

Aureus Albion

Aureus continued to scan the room silently. Picking up orders for supplies to take to Greystone, some cat talk, requests for once the group got to their destination, things of that nature. Nothing that really demanded his attention. A bit disheartening, since he felt he wasn't carrying his weight currently.

Snapping back from his overthinking spiral, Aureus' gaze turned to Adelhein in a flash.

After thinking briefly on his teacher's comments, he slowly nodded. "They are, yes. Warm and comfortable." Some hesitation adorned his visage "...I'll try to do my best to show your hospitality is worth it." Considering he had been doing the bare minimum stung.

The elf glanced towards Artoria and Gilgamesh and their takes on the situation. "Your summons truly are something else" Aureus commented somewhat absentmindedly.

Growing up in Roran Scarlett had seen her fair share of fae, and the elf quartermaster was no exception, given his attitude she couldn't help but wonder if he was from the Fae See, or just perhaps from Ryken, she had heard that elves from the See could tend to be a bit more snooty bunch, even if she didn't really have any evidence to back that claim up besides some of them just seeming to act 'mightier than thou'.

'Yeah what Artoria said!" Scarlett added enthusiastically.

When Adelhein registered them, she'd also add in after him, "And don't you forget it." Looking toward the quartermaster with a confident grin.

She heard Gilgamesh's words and had her own follow up. "This must be really serious if they're letting all of these people sign up...I mean a whole place getting swallowed up..I mean sure they were doing it during the Empire-Fae See conflict but here? I wonder what caused it..." She'd say a bit more softly. Either that or the standards weren't up to snuff as it seemed that Gilgamesh was suggesting to her possibly.

Scarlett also continued to let Demeter handle it, pleased to hear Adelhein agree with her. "Right, when we pull this off it'll be a great publicity launching point for our party." She spoke definitively reflecting how she had no intention of failing.

She thought for a moment before replying, "Some shovel(s) might be good, don't want to get in a pinch where we're stuck in the ground because of some weird incident and then can't use magic to get out for whatever reason, it could prove to be helpful, maybe some more mundane medical supplies too encase our ability to heal gets compromised too, I mean I think these scenarios are unlikely but It pays off to be prepared rather than not.." Scarlett added.

She chuckled a bit at hearing Aureus' comment about the summons, "You can say that again! Part of me wishes I knew how to do that."

"Get a new friend there Aqua?"
Scarlett asked with a smile looking to 'The Cat' who was hanging out around Aqua.

As the group finalized their plans, their purchases were quickly attended to. The quartermaster proved efficient despite his earlier remarks, ensuring the group was outfitted with torches, a sturdy length of rope, a compass, shovels, and a modest bundle of medical supplies. The weight of the gear was distributed among them to ensure ease of travel. Aqua’s suggestion about the rope and compass, as well as Scarlett’s preparation foresight, were noted with approving nods from the party.

Edvar
Edvar.jpg

The mention of survivors led to a brief pause as Edvar, the guildmaster, overheard Demeter’s inquiry. His expression softened, though the somberness didn’t leave his sharp features. He gestured toward a bench at the far end of the guild hall, where a frail, middle-aged man sat hunched over a clay mug. His unkempt hair and tattered cloak marked him as one of the displaced. His sunken eyes darted nervously at every sound, but there was a faint determination in his hunched posture.

“That’s Garel. He made it out of Greystone just before the ground gave way,” Edvar said. His voice dropped to a low murmur. “He’s not all there after what happened, but he might be able to tell you something useful if you can get him to talk.”
Garel
Garel.jpg

As the group approached, Garel seemed to tense, clutching his mug tightly. His hollow eyes darted to each of them, lingering on Artoria and Gilgamesh before finally landing on Demeter, who had taken the lead in approaching him.

“What do you want?” he asked, his voice raspy and defensive, though there was an underlying note of curiosity. His grip on the mug relaxed slightly as he noticed her calm demeanor.

If the group asked the right questions, Garel might open up about what he had seen in the moments leading up to the sinkhole’s collapse—and perhaps about the strange phenomena whispered about in the guild hall.

Noticing Aureus current predicament, with the hesitation that appeared to overpower him, Adelhein gave him a comforting smile. “I know the pressure might be a tad too much sometimes, but that is a good thing. After all, coal is turned into a diamond after enough pressure is applied to it. Revel in it.” The young magus said, not trying to sound patronizing. “You know, back where I came from, while I wasn’t the next successor of my family, as that would have been my aunt, the pressure of representing a family like the El-Melloi was quite big. Even more when marriage plans had already been made to secure an alliance. Weird to think I was a few months off from it…” He shrugged.

“Don’t let Gilgamesh hear you calling her a ‘summon’...” The teenager leaned towards Aureus, covering his mouth and whispering, crimson orbs focused on the elf’s ones. He would rather not imagine the mess that might create, considering her overwhelming prideful nature. “... but yes, you are absolutely correct. While Artoria was more planned, with the correct catalyst for her invocation, Gilgamesh was purely luck of the draw. Guess that is one way of fate paying me back for what happened.” In truth, he didn’t really think he could have gotten a better hand than he had.

“The Empire-Fae See conflict?” Adelhein raised one eyebrow at that curious mention from Scarlett, as he wasn’t really aware of the political landscape outside Ryke. He had the knowledge of the countries which made up the continent, however. “This amount of adventurers could also be because of the lack of knowledge of what happened in Greystone. Throw enough people at it and hope the problem get solved type of strategy.” Plus, the 50 silver rykes was a pretty substantial reward.

And, when both Aqua and Scarlett gave their suggestions for supplies, he nodded. “Excellent suggestions. Seems like we will go in fully prepared.” That was the benefit of having more than a single thinking head for sure. “A friend?” He asked, with curiosity etched across his face, first looking at Aqua and then following Scarlett’s gaze, finally seeing the black cat with the lustrous fur.

As the group moved to the survivor of Greystone’s incident, Garel, Adelhein’s Servants showed a few different reactions.

Artoria’s steely and cold golden gaze kept peering towards the man with unyielding intensity. That man had information that was of great interest to her Master, and she clearly wanted him to spill the beans, every single one of them. If others didn’t manage to make him talk, it wouldn’t be above her to manhandle the man, by his neck, to make him sing.

Gilgamesh could feel her counterpart’s more violent disposition and could have started asking the shaken man the questions. However, she decided not to. After all, a king stealing his subject's opportunities for growth was not ideal. “A scared dog, mmmm?” She murmured, seeing Garel’s pitiful state.

"A-ahh, why are you following me?" Noticing Shadow was following her, Aqua kneeled back in front of the cat and mindlessly start giving her more petting. The cat's presence draw the other's attention too as Scarlett aske about the cat. Aqua's eyes darted to the other members trying to gauge their reaction, Adelhein didn't seems to mind it so Aqua picked up the cat with both of her hands and nodded at Scarlett.

"Y-yes. He seems eager to follow me." Putting her sling bag on her front and keep it open, Aqua took out a few flasks and make a room to put the cat inside, hoping it would be comfortable enough for Shadow. If the cat jumps away or the others tell her to not bring the cat she would do it, but otherwise she's happy that she could pets the cat more. This actually might help her keep herself calm underground.

As the group finalized their preparation, Aqua took some of the rope and medicines into her bag. The guildmaster then pointed them at who was the survivor of the incident. Looking at the man, it was obvious that he wasn't in the best shape. She wasn't sure what she should ask the man, but she simply wants him to feels better.

"A-ahh, u-umm... P-please drink this, t-thank you." She said nervously before putting a flask in front of the man. The flask she put contains a light brown liquid with crushed herbs inside it. Opening the cork would let a sweet gingerly aroma out of the flask, giving a warm comforting sensation even without the need to consume it immediately.

As Aqua knelt down and offered more pets Shadow purred and walked back and forth against her hand, closing his eyes each time he pressed his head against the palm.

Shadow dangled like a limp noodle as he was lifted and put into the bag, letting out a soft indignant meow at Aqua. He squirmed only for a moment before settling down, his tail flicking back and forth.

The cat’s ears twitched, and he gave her a long, pointed look before curling up, his tail wrapping around his paws. Despite his initial annoyance, he seemed to accept the arrangement, his sharp eyes peeking out from the bag’s opening as if plotting something.

Demeter

Before Giuseppe could give his answer, Guildmaster Edvar chimed in and directed the group towards a young man by the name of Garel.

"Thanks, Edvar."

Demeter put a hand on Giuseppe's shoulder for a moment, gave him a nod of respect, then went over to check on the survivor alongside her party. Garel looked somewhat unwell. He was pale, skinny and unshaven with bandages wrapped around his head and a lingering frown. Aqua was the first to send him a non-verbal greeting in the form of some warm tea. Comforting people wasn't exactly one of Demeter's strengths, but she knew how much she disliked people who were indirect or dishonest with their words.

So she decided to just get to the point and be forward about what she needed from him.

"Good afternoon, Mr. Garel. My party and I were planning to travel to Greystone tomorrow morning to help with the relief effort and investigate the sinkhole. We heard that you were there when it happened. I'd like to have a least a little information before we head down there, and I was hoping you could tell us about some of the... 'phenomenon' you saw while you were there."

Hopefully Aqua's tea would liven up his tongue.

Scarlett chuckled a bit at hearing Adelhein warn Aureus, even though she knew full well he was serious about that. What was a bit more surprising to Scarlett was when Adelhein didn't seem to know what she meant when she mentioned the conflict, it felt like pretty much everyone had at least heard about it but he hadn't then again he was from a different world apparently..which probably explained that to extents, but even then not having heard about it at all?

Regardless Scarlett would speak with some brevity,

"Yeah, so basically, word is that the Fae See instigated a war against the East Empire, and that they released a bunch of monstrous bugs, which is now why there's that hive of the buggers between the Fae See and East Empire boarder, of course the Fae See denies this is true, and claim that the East Empire started hostilities first, and that they merely retaliated to these hostilities, as for me I'm not really sure whose telling the truth and whose lying, but either way there was a lot of destruction on both sides because it led to an all out war, a crusade declared by the Spirit King and a hostile stance toward Fae in general from the East Empire.."

She'd explain to the best of her ability from what she had heard and understood. Scarlett was far from aware of what had actually transpired, as was the vast majority for that matter.

However with his follow up words she'd nod, "I guess that makes sense, it isn't unreasonable for the guild to throw so many people at such a large scale problem particularly when not all the details are known to what caused it, If it's an A or S grade threat that caused it you'd probably need all these hands on deck to even stand a chance..the reward money doesn't hurt either."

She grinned when Adelhein praised her for her idea.

"Looks like our new friend is coming along then." She'd smile and give a nod at seeing Aqua put the cat into the bag whom didn't seem to be resistant. Hopefully whatever this was wouldn't lead to it being endangered, but maybe having an animal nearby would help calm Aqua's nerves some and keep her focused, yeah like an emotional support animal..

Scarlett's attention then went to Garel and what Demeter was saying to him, before she'd also nod his way, in agreement at what Demeter said, her expression more serious, and tone more sympathetic "My friend tells the truth, every little bit will help us get to the bottom of this." Deciding to ignore the summon's more vocal reaction.

Garel
Garel.jpg

At the edge of the guild hall, the group clustered around Garel. The once-proud villager nursed his clay mug with trembling hands and managed a slow, doubtful look at Aqua’s offered flask. Every so often, his gaze flitted toward Artoria’s unyielding stare or Gilgamesh’s regal indifference, as though expecting harsh words or worse.

Still, the sweet aroma wafting up from Aqua’s herbal concoction snagged his attention. He sniffed the drink, then took a tentative sip. The warmth seemed to spread through him, calming his frayed nerves ever so slightly. That alone was enough for Garel to relax a fraction—Aqua’s skillful mixture and the group’s reassuring presence were helping to cut through his wariness.

He set the mug aside and gave the group a slow nod of thanks, though he seemed unsure how to begin. Finally, he rasped out a reply, addressing Demeter and Scarlett’s inquiries first.

“I’ll…tell you what I can. The day Greystone fell, most of us were turning in for the night. We’d been hearing these strange howls for a few days—like a fierce wind rushing through tunnels, but sometimes there was this…deep rumble behind it. Some folks chalked it up to some new monster den, others thought maybe an earthquake was coming."

"Then, right before dawn, I was out front of my house. Couldn’t sleep, so I went to fetch water. All of a sudden, the air turned cold. The ground…shifted. I swear I saw cracks of blue light trace the earth—like lightning, only it was under our feet. Before I knew it, the whole place started caving in. Houses dropped in seconds… It was like the world got hungry and swallowed Greystone whole.”

Garel’s voice caught in his throat. He clenched his eyes shut, breath shuddering before he continued.

“I ran. Didn’t even know which way I was going. I heard people screaming, but I couldn’t see them. It was too dark. By the time I got out, half the village was just…gone.”

He gave Aqua a grateful nod and mustered the courage to meet Demeter’s gaze.

“I wish I could tell you more, but that’s all I saw. I don’t know if it’s some magic or a beast underground, or worse. Just… if you go down there, watch your step. The sinkhole isn’t the only danger; something else is in that darkness.”

With a shaky sigh, Garel leaned back against the bench. Now that the story was out, the tension in his shoulders melted just a little.

Before anyone could even ask, Garel blinked at Demeter as though remembering something.

“Oh, that old merchant… Giuse… Guiseppe, was it? I recall his wagon. He came through a few days before everything went mad, trying to sell the usual wares. I’m afraid, if he left anything in Greystone, I never saw it when I fled. It all fell in, far as I know.”

He paused, taking a ragged breath.

“If you find it, then the place wasn’t completely lost. Hope you do.”

His answers given, Garel fell quiet. He seemed steadier, but his eyes still held the haunted look of a man who’d watched his life tumble into a bottomless pit.

Outside the guild hall’s broad doors, the crimson sun had begun its slow descent, painting Ryken’s sky in hues of orange and gold. The caravan to Greystone would depart at daybreak. There was still a bit of time for final preparations, or one could simply find rest and steel oneself for the journey—and whatever might be lurking in that endless darkness.

Adelhein crossed his arms while listening to Scarlett’s explanation. The information was new, the young magus having heard nothing about the past hostilities between both countries. A slight raising of his eyebrows was all the expression he showed after learning about that particular war. “It appears this place, like the one I’m from, doesn’t have that much political stability. Still, to think that there is a hive of monstrous bugs occupying land… I wonder how long it will take until these nations move to reclaim lost territory. It could even be an opportunity…” His mind began racing, trying to see how he could exploit the current situation, if it was doable and even worth it. Certain opportunities seldom appeared twice, after all.

The talk of destruction, war and a crusade had gotten Artoria’s attention. The corrupted king, while showing no visible emotion behind her usual iron mask, drank the small details which were being provided by Scarlett. Unfortunately, the whole event appeared to having been a lost opportunity for indiscriminate, all-out slaughter. “It would have been good to see how that people make war. Even if only as a precaution.” A pity. She ended without elaborating further.

“Well, if they have to justify on why they made war, something is clearly wrong.” Gilgamesh chimed in, interested to learn how the nations of this realm appeared to operate whenever it was most important. “A proper ruler makes decisions, without justifying themselves, and bear the brunt of the results, be they positive or negative.” Anything else would bring them down to their subjects’ level and that was unthinkable.

As for Aqua’s new little, furred friend, there was no objection from Adelhein to bring it along. He did wonder why she would bring it, however. Household animals had a two utilities in magi families: marking the moment which children show they have the makings of a magus, being cold enough to sacrifice their beloved pets to attain greater powers. That and also being used as familiars. The teenager would wonder, for a fleeting moment, which would be the fate reserved for that black cat, but was ultimately unbothered by what Aqua chose to do with it. It could even end up having some value where they were going to.

Next, his attention shifted to the shaken man, after Demeter and Scarlett had talked with him, with addition of Aqua’s curious concoction.

Every word the man spoke, Adelhein attempted to parse through his mind, separating the important bits to those who he didn’t find useful. “Sudden cracks of blue light on the ground… sounds like something being activated through mana.” That was his best hypothesis to the information provided. Of course, he could be completely wrong. “We will know more about this phenomenon after we investigate it in loco.”

Thankfully, it seemed that the information given by the man had been enough to satisfy Artoria as well, the Servant not seeing the need to deal with Garel using violence anymore.

“Seems like we have all extra information we might gather before setting off. Shall we rest?” Adelhein asked the group, feeling they were as prepared as they could ever be.

"Thanks, Garel," Demeter replied to the man, "You never know, but that bit of information might help keep one of us alive."

The first thing that popped into Demeter's mind was "mole people with magic", but she decided to keep that thought to herself. Wasn't much to go off of, but at least she knew to keep her eyes to the ground as much as to to her front and the sky. She did have one last suggestion to the group before they settled in for the night.

"I think we should travel light. Or, at least, make our way into the pit expecting to leave with more weight than we came," Demeter explained, "You never know what we might find down there worth bringing back. The guild likes when you bring back evidence of what you discover on your quests."

She paused for a moment, then nodded with a smirk.

"And I like bringing home souvenirs."

Then, she turned to Adelhein.

"Yeah. I'm ready to turn in when you guys are."

With Adelhein Scarlett nodded, however she wavered her hand,

"I'd say some areas of this realm are more stable than others..one thing that I've been surprised by is just how many people from other...places"

Scarlett intentionally changed her wording to not say other worlds given the place they were in currently in public, figuring that he'd get her code switching if she did, continuing,
"Have made there way through here..it does make me wonder what that's about..I mean it's far from a 'normal' occurrence wouldn't you agree?..While I"m more than happy to get people like yourself Adelhein and those who you brought with you, part of me is concerned that not all who may come will be as..desirable."

Hearing the summons thoughts on it was interesting. "It was seen as a war for survival on both sides. against those who threatened their very way of life..that is my understanding of the mainstream perception."

Scarlett listened to what Garel had to say carefully to see if she could learn anything useful.

"Strange wind like howls.." Scarlett repeated quietly thinking to herself, was it a beast? Natural phenomena? Given the wide scale destruction she had a hard time believing it was natural, the whole thing sounded too coordinated...

"Blue traces of light..in the ground? Swallowing everything up? That really does sound like a disaster, I'm truly sorry for any loses." She spoke empathetically with a serious frown taking hold on her face. Her immediate thought was maybe some sort of magic use, but it was sort of hard to say for certain unless she got to see ground zero so to speak.

There was one part Scarlett connected too but all things considered she didn't feel comfortable pressing the young man on the matter, what he meant by there being something else in the darkness? Had he seen It? Did he know what it was? What that suggested to Scarlett was some kind of hostile, whether criminal or monster..whatever it was it was either one very powerful being, or perhaps there was a group under ground..all of these possibilities went through Scarletts mind..

"We'll do what we can to resolve this so that no others will have to face what you faced." Scarlett said looking more confident speaking with conviction now, looking to him.

"And yes thank you."

She nodded at what Adelhein had to say on the matter, As well as agreeing with Demeter on a few things. "Traveling light is a good idea..I don't think our current plans are too heavy, and while I have some similar thoughts to Adelhein on what it could be, he's also right that we won't know for sure until we do some proper investigating. Anyway I'm ready when you are all too."
