Gods and MM

i was skimming through the second edition core book * which i still dont own :( *

and i noticed alot of the gods have weapons or armor or something on their person that is made from the MM. so my question is: do gods have to force attunement? They get the bonuses a exalted right? I know Ambrosia and Quintessence can be formulated into an item food or weapon or whatever. do these things just become like exceptional or perfect quality items or do they have any magical attributes?

I don't know, but on a relate note, I'd like to ask whether gods should be allowed access to Exalted Charms, depending on their nature. For example, i'm sure the Unconquered Sun can use Solar Charms, and Luna would be able to use Lunar Charms. By extension, would their servants be able to use their Charms? Could elementals and elemental spirits learn Terrestrial Charms? If so, what difficulties or penalties would you put on their use, and how much more experience would they cost to learn than normal?

you can rule that if you want and your a storyteller. but honestly i dont see why a player would request or want a god character knowing exalted charms, i mean if you wanna use there charms why not just play as the appropriate exalt type?

anywho, i guess you should do what eclipse does. pay double for exalted like charms.

In 1st ed gods could not fully attune, only do basic attunement, not gaining material bonuses. In 2nd ed, so far as I can tell, such has not been stated one way or the other. I may be wrong about the later...but I don't remember seeing anysuch... then again, so far gods have rather gotten the brush off. Hopefully in time that will be remedied... if only more attention were being paid to Creation and the various actual Exalted or the Gods, Elementals and Demons the Exalted regularly will need to deal with instead of the Wyld taking precedent. Personally, I'd rather see a true Mortal book before the Wyld... but that's just me.

so pretty much all these powerful gods that are covered in moonsilver, starmetal and jade are just wearing it for its opulance and for its fashion statement as opposed to practicality right?

I thought that was most of the life of a god.

Just one big social event after another.

While answering a few prayers in between body shots.

They can attune, just not fully. An artifact, even without its material bonus, can be very useful. A Grand Daiklaive is still a Grand Daiklaive, even without the material bonus added...same with that suit of artifact Armor. In fact, often as useful as many of the lower artifacts are in the hands of the appropriate artifact type. Not as if a Dragonblooded or Lunar gains much from wearing artifact light armor of the appropriate type. Reducing a penalty that doesn't exist isn't too much different than simply wearing the same and not suffering such non-existent penalties.

true, though i think deathlords can get full attune benefits from soulsteel and US can from orchilum, witch makes me wonder, if the US gets full benefits from wearing orchilum, could five days darkness since he is the US's shadow?

I would agree with the idea of letting appropriate Incarna, the ELemental Dragons, and Deathlords attune fully... their pets shouldn't really be better at doing such than they. Five Days Darkness...hmm... an interesting thought. If there was a shadow of Orichalcum...perhaps. Even without...maybe, though would he even if he could? Light, which is something of the essence of Orichalcum is his antithesis...

mabey soul steel since its is Orchilums oppsit?

oooh now thats a intristing thought, five days darkness finally relising his dreams faces the wrath of the US, and they come to a show down, Orchlium and soulsteel clashing as they war to determin who will rule

true' date=' though i think deathlords can get full attune benefits from soulsteel and US can from orchilum[/quote']
I think that the Unconquered Sun should not get the MM bonus from orichalcum.

The way I read the MM bonus, and the double attunement cost for a non-appropriate material, is that different Exalted resonate particularly well with a single MM. But this affinity with a single material come from their shards, and their lack of affinity comes from the fact they still inhabit a mortal body.

The Unconquered Sun is above this. He is a god, a celestial incarnae, and his being resonates well with all the magical materials. So I don't think he should  have to pay the double attunement cost, nor gain the MM bonus.

The Deathlords are a different matter, since they are not gods, but ghosts of powerful Solars. I would imagine that they follow the same rules for attuning to artifacts as do Abyssals.

That being said, compared to the unimaginable power of the Unconquered Sun, or any of the Celestial Incarnae, the bonus you gain from the appropriate MM is truly miniscule. There would be no point in giving any of them those few extra dice, when they wield the power they do.

... thank you both for those inspiring (and lengthy) interjection into the proceedings ...

On Soul Steel being an appropriate material for 5 Days Darkness...I disagree. It is something inherently linked to death and the underworld, forged of the stuff of Oblivion and souls. 5 Days Darkness both precedes its existence...and is very much a spirit and not a ghost, if a dark one.

On the Unconquered Sun resonating equally well with all materials...then why is it that only prayers to him can be crafted into orichalcum? Why do the Exalted related to him, and the Dragon Kings who were his children and servants before such have a specific affinity for orichalcum? As well, orichalcum cannot be made naturally without his light. He and it are tied most assuredly. Is the magical material bonus for such a minor thing in compare to his awesome power? Likely. Yet that does not mean he has no mystical affinity for such.

... actually, Soulsteel presents a bit of a conundrum here... there are references that link Autochthon to Soulsteel, before the Primordial War (ie, before there was an 'Underworld')...

I don't have any stake in this conversation. I like my MM:s suitably mysterious, and am quite alright with them just being there, and giving that little boost, without questioning it too much.

... that being said; the relation between the Exalted, their patron deities, and their various MM:s are never fully explored. What's to say that the MM:s don't have a greatly increased effect, when used by the Incarna of the appropriate affinity?

Perhaps the MM:s are an external force, even unto the deities and are mystically connected to the pertinent deity:s makeup, and if a deity surrounds himself with the element of his affinity, his/her power is greatly expanded, like a catalyst. Or an inductor or something.

Perhaps the MM:s are directly linked to the deities, a ripped out portion of their Essence makeup (think of how Starmetal is appropriated by the Sidereal... It wouldn't be that much of a stretch to make Orichalcum be a sacrificed part of US, Moonsilver of Luna, Jade of the ED:s ... though Starmetal *would* be kind of strange... not using the Maidens' own Essence, but rather snuffing out random Gods of the Celestial Bureaucracy).

True, the Autochthonian Soulsteel...made from some ancient race that angered their mechagod into pulling an Independence Day on them. Even so, that is still linked to and made of the souls of the dead.

eep... sorry 'bout that. Thought I'd manage to revise my post before anyone was none the wiser...

Hmm. If Autochthon was related to Soulsteel, then all members of the Celestial Incarna would have a material associated with them. :P

I didn't say Autochthon was *related* to Soulsteel. Just that there are text that link him to it. Specifically, to him *using* it.

Or are you implying that Autochthon is an Incarna? And that if he (as an Incarna) was related to Soulsteel, all the Incarna would a MM related to it?... because Autochthon is a Primordial, not an Incarna.

Then again, DB:s are related to Jade, and they are Exalted of the Elemental Dragons, who are souls of the Incarna Gaia (Creation). But even if being a Primordial doesn't stop Autochthon having affinity with a MM he should, if anything, have an affinity for *all* of them (though perhaps to a lesser extent than the Incarna).

Something I've pondered about Magical Materials is Alloys. The infamous Yellow Jade, I've heard, is regular Jade that has been changed by exposure to orichalcum. Are there other possible mixtures? And what do the associated Exalted think of them?

I'm pretty sure "yellow jade" was an editing oversight.
