Depends on the scenario, but I've seen it done well.
I remember Son of Vulcan being a pretty early example of one.

Alternate universe. Same heroes but more post apicalypticy. And also, you know, it's the future so anybody who's not immortal is dead unless they used a life expanding serum. Huge crisis struck this alternate earth and now it's a post apocalyptic wasteland with most of the major cities decimated. You know, fallout style but without the nucleur power and 1960s mentality.
