Yes, you have consorts, but they're all robots. And I can't think of anything specific in the way of challenges at the moment. If you come up with something, feel free to use it.

Yeah. You need to enter the portal, which will bring you to the surface of your land. Then you find a portal there which brings you to your server player's house, then take their portal down to their land. From there you go to their server player's house, and then their land, and so on. Eventually you return to your land, which is when you have to seek out your Denizen. But we won't worry about that until much later.
