Intro
In this chapter of Isekai Hell, the beastman, Mitsunari, will attempt to surpass his mortal limitations to obtain a greater calling. Reward for completing this rp and passing the test is a title that will allow Mitsunari to partially ascend, enabling him to expand his mind and capabilities beyond that of other mortals or even the longer lived races. This rp will be considered a World RP. Basic rewards will be doubled and assets and items worth points are also possible rewards. Permanent character injury and death may also result. Failure to pass the test will result in not acquiring the desired title but other rewards are still possible.

The tribulation begins with Mitsunari and his minions having a leisurely stroll in the forested hills not far from his Ruin Outpost home. He had heard rumor of a Mountain Guardian somewhere in the hills. Such a figure would surely have immense power and ability. Perhaps something worth learning or taking as well. It was mid afternoon and comfortably cool. A light breeze caused the forest to creak as the wind moved through the branches.

A mist quickly moved in without warning. It created a chill that made it uncomfortable to linger. The sun, which was easily shining through the canopy was now gone, replaced by shades of gray and the occasional dark tree protruding from the fog was somehow sinister and unwelcoming. The place smelled wet and the forest rot seemed to stand out more now than before. The eerie quiet that replaced the wind and the animals was broken by a voice. It seemed to come from everywhere.

"Turn back, Mortal. The ground on which you stand is sacred. You are unfit to traverse it and shall pay dearly..."

The voice was stern but not malicious. Had Mitsunari heard it from a person rather than a disembodied voice, he may have come off as sound advice. Despite the way back being shrouded in mist as much as the way forward, Mitsunari would remain keenly aware of the way back at all times as if the fog was giving guidance of some kind.

The Mountain Guardian, it was a mystery to him and his followers but if the myth was true and there was anything to be gained from it, Mitsunari felt it was rightfully his. The outpost had fallen under his control and now the surrounding lands were his dominion. Creatures from the east crossed his territory at his discretion, now able to find their way west safely without interference. His new followers were a direct result of that. When the mist rolled in Mitsunari's eyes quickly began searching for a silhouette among the shadows of the trees. Then came the voice that threatened him and his followers.

The large brutes grunted and groaned as they raised their swords and stepped forward to surround the kitsune. While they brandished their weapons he glanced back at the path they had traveled and contemplated the risks they now faced. The ogres meant nothing to him and could be replaced, but would he make it out of this endeavor in one piece if at all.

"I am Seikatsu Mitsunari and I have come here seeking the Mountain Guardian!" He proclaimed. "I have laid claim to the nearby territory and I heard the legend of these hills and have come to see if the tales are true. Show yourself if you are indeed this guardian and let us speak with one another face to face." The ktisune kept his composure and tried to remain confident in his choice that lead them here. On the inside however, he was nervous and on high alert.

Forested Hills of the Mountain Guardian
As if in answer, the obvious way back became last in the fog. There were plenty of shadows, but none of them seemed to be the source of the fog or the voice. Just trees skewering the obscurement at haphazard angles and intervals. The silence was eventually broken by the same voice.

"A peasant does not barge into his lord's home and demand an audience. Know your place. Merit is required, of which you have little. Now do your best to not have the mountain claim you for your lack of obedience."

With no clear way forward or back, Mitsunari was now lost. He would have to leverage everything at his disposal to attempt to reach the dwelling of the Mountain Guardian if he is to be granted an audience. While turning back remained an option, it would no longer be easy. The words of the voice would ring ominous to remember. Regardless of the way he chose to go, he would need to find some means of navigation to avoid going in circles or wandering meaninglessly. Worse case was he could finda ledge to walk off of by accident.

High_resolution_wallpaper_background_ID_77700090482.jpg

Right away Mitsunari was shocked by the sudden turn of the voice's attitude and tone. He had hoped to keep things civils and maintain a level of sophistication, but apparently he was the only one who hoped for that outcome. "A peasant and a lord?" His boiling rage and frustration simmered down to an irritated smirk as he saw this as a challenge as well as a chance to gain that merit the voice spoke of. "Then we shall topple this Lord." With his mind made up, Mitsunari started to channel his mana and the ogres readied themselves for an attack.

"Fujin's Scourge!" Mitsunari brought his hands together and a howling echoed over the hills and through the trees. Wind snaked its way to the kitsune from every direction, spiraling and coiling up in front of him and the ogres. In no time the winds started to take the shape of a tornado, climbing upward into the sky. Violently he ripped his hands apart and the tornado roared to life just eight feet away.

As the tornado circled the group, Mitsunari's hair and kimono billowed in the direction of the twister and he felt as though he might be pulled away. Thankfully the ogres were large enough for him to stand behind and not be taken by the wind. He watched eagerly and hoped that the tornado would dispel the fog and make the forest and their enemy visible.

"If anything moves, kills it!" He cried out over the sound of the wind. "Show it mercy to whatever dared call me a peasant!" The ogres roared ferociously in response to the command, all too happy to spill blood.

Mitsunari's wind magic was fierce and excellently brought forth. It did exactly as hoped in clearing the fog in the immediate area around the party. For the remaining seconds it was active, it could be used to continue clearing the fog as they went if wished. However, a more pressing issue arose. The tornado was too close and at max diameter, it affected Mistunari's minions. 2 of Mitsunari's 5 minions immediately died. One to the savage nature of the winds. The other to the splintered wood and debris carried on the wind. Both were sent flying in odd directions by the wind current before it was apparent what happened. If Mitsunari keeps his tornado spell active and at its current distance from the party, he will lose the remainder of his minions. Were it not for the 2 that already died, Mitsunari would have instantly killed himself with his own spell. Perhaps it was the fog hindering Mitsunari's spatial judgement or maybe Mitsunari was more powerful than he realized, but his decision was an obvious blunder. The faint sound of a mirth filled cackling could be heard on the roaring wind that was Mitsunari's Fujin spell.

High_resolution_wallpaper_background_ID_77700090482.jpg

“Tch.” The thinning of the fog around them was a success, but the imbecilic ogres he employed allowed themselves to become victims of the wind. As they were swept away, Mitsunari waved his hand and the tornado was pushed further away. Once it reached his maximum distance the spell could no longer be maintained and the tornado quickly dwindled down to a light breeze that vanished completely.

“You laugh, but continue to conceal yourself! Your cowardice amuses me too!” He hoped to goad the entity into revealing itself by taunting it. Having a better field of vision would make combat easier, but he required an opponent first. “I’ll reduce this forest to ash if I must.” Mitsunari threatened as a flame sparked in his palm.

The fox kept his ears raised and his eyes focused. He sniffed the air regularly in the hopes of finding a scent that was unfamiliar to him.

Forested Hills of the Mountain Guardian
With the oppressive mists cleared for the time being in front of the party, Mitsunari was able to finally take in the scene again in more detail. The forest was still eerily quiet, but the noises of the forest weren't as dampened or creepy as they were before. There was also something new: burning incense and other aromatic fragrances were in the air. They seemed to grow stronger the further the party moved forward down the path. That would clearly take them deeper into the Mountain Guardian's domain and further away from their ability to leave. There was something else of note that could be felt shortly after Mitsunari called out again.

A rumbling felt through the ground beneath Mitsunari's feet was approaching. Each moment he and his minions stood around the more intense the rumbling became. To his left and in the direction up the hill they were currently on, Mitsunari could see, breaking through the mist wall, a wave of stone, earth, and vegetation bearing down on the party. If they remained where they were and tried to ride it out, they would likely be washed away in the landslide and presumably crushed and/or suffocated. Mitsunari would quickly and easily analyze the situation and realize his minions did not have the speed to outrun the coming 'attack' from the mountain, however, Mitsunari could outrun it but only if he moved forward or back down the path he had come. The hill would likely become more treacherous to traverse after the landslide settles. The direction he chooses, if any, may be his last means of going back for a while.

High_resolution_wallpaper_background_ID_77700090482.jpg

The forest had produced no visible enemies just yet and Mitsunari's patience was growing thin as he and his remaining ogres moved on through the mist. It started to feel like this Mountain Guardian was nothing more than some charlatan capitalizing off of the myth that had been built up around the name. He thought his challenge would go ignored, but the mountain seemed to finally make its move. The ground rumbled and the sound of shifting stone and terrain drew Mitsunari's attention to the left where he saw the hillside being rearranged. "Damn it." He spared the briefest glance to the ogres and cursed their size and lack of mobility. Without warning to them he leapt away, heading further up the hill and out of the way of the landslide.

"Perhaps I underestimated you!" The fox confessed with a half smirk painted upon his face. If this was anything to go by, the Guardian might just be stronger and smarter than Mitsunari expected. But now he was missing five followers and that wouldn't look good in the eyes of other potential supporters. It was time to make good on his own threat. "Amaterasu's Wrath!"

Flames raged out of Mitsunari's mouth, rolling forward to crash and wrap around the trees like a wave of water over rocks. He maintained the spell just long enough for the wave to reach its maximum distance and set the nearby area ablaze. He inhaled softly, catching his breath after having expelled it all. "Air Bullet Barrage." He hurled two blasts towards the fire to spread the flames in the direction the landslide originated. He now that his spells had been cast he would continue to move higher up the hill.

Forested Hills of the Mountain Guardian
As Mitsunari easily danced ahead, his companions tried to catch up, but were instead intercepted by the wave of earth descending down the hillside. Whether they lived or died was beyond Mitsunari's knowing, but they would likely be some time in catching up if they were alive. Either way, Mitsunari would be unable to retrieve them unless he headed back and lost all the progress he made.

Ahead on the path, Mitsunari would now find the mist disipating more freely. He could now see the red arches of the stairs leading up to presumably some temple or shrine. The mist over the steps danced and seemingly portrayed past residents or visitors of the mountain in ghostly form. None of the ghastly images last longer than a few moments, but it gave the stairs a foreboding aura, being so clearly haunted.

At the base of the stairs, Mitsunari would find himself standing on a stone landing. Around the base were little statues with alcoves for burning incense among other fragrances and making offerings to the Guardian of the Mountain. At the center of the paved landing, a simple table sat low to the ground. A single cushion was positioned to the side of the table leading down the mountain. On the table was a lone saucer and cup with what looked like a dark tea already poured. Some of the herbal ingredients floated on the surface. Once again, no one appeared to be around, but the voice once again could be heard. The amusement of the voice was palpable.

"You have finally reached my front door, mortal. I would commend you, but as you may have noticed, it is not particularly difficult for those wishing to pay proper respects."

In the distance, the rumble of thunder could be heard as dark clouds gathered in the direction Mitsunari had come from. Dark plumes of smoke billowed from where the fire had been started.

Seikatsu Mitsunari

1649889553844.pngMitsunari moved on with caution and a hint of curiosity as his eyes skimmed over the trees and the forest floor. The mist seemed to thin which did make it a bit easier to traverse the terrain. That was when he saw it, the tori gates that neatly lead even higher up. They brought back foggy, faint memories of his past life and flashes of Japan. When he arrived to the landing and spotted the small shrines and the somewhat familiar setup with tea.

Before he could act, the voice returned to speak once more in a condescending manner. The landslide was certainly the Guardian's doing and that meant that the entity was powerful. While he wanted to know what the Guardian was truly capable of, he could not fight an enemy he could not see.

With a heavy sigh the kitsune resigned himself to indulge the spirit's game. Crouching down he swept his kimono under his body and knelt on to the pillow. The apparitions on the stairs were intriguing and he pondered whether the Guardian would appear as one too. "Join me and let's avoid wasting anymore of either of our time!" The storm brewing in the distance made it difficult to listen for footsteps and the fire made it difficult to smell other scents. "I did not come here with the intention to fight! I'm in search of knowledge and information with which to change the world!"

The voice scoffed at the idea proposed by Mitsunari.

"Change the world? You, fool, start with yourself before you set your sights on the world. If you were to fashion the world in your image, it wouldn't last the first hurdle. You have already left your followers and burned the bridge behind you..."

Another boom of thunder. Rain was falling on the hills down and away from Mistunari's current position.

"Your aim is foolish too. You are too vulnerable and alone to change the world. The world is made up of too many peoples with too many thoughts. Even were you to have the power, you wouldn't get anywhere meaningful. Instead, you'd likely fall prey to one of the [Factions]: becoming a pawn in their game or removing yourself from play. Sip the tea I prepared for you and be on your way. Trouble me no more. It is the last warning I will give."

The voice finally concluded, a weariness in their voice suggesting they were done speaking for the time being. The tea mentioned, was just a basic herbal tea. Bitter and likely good for health, but not much else. An ominous wind rose and gently tugged at Mistunari's loose clothing and hair. The mists dispersed to the point of being irrelevant to visibility, but the sun was still not shining brightly, casting the area in gloom despite not being under the storm cloud.

He couldn’t argue with the voice as the proof laid scattered across the hill, evidence of his selfishness and lack of self-control. The fox let out a heavy sigh and looked upward as the rain started to fall. The Guardian’s words brought Gamatsu and Tu Tao to mind. He had hired them as mercenaries and they were likely going to leave him despite his efforts to entice them to stay. Savage ogres and an outpost were not enough to bring about change.

But he couldn’t agree with everything the voice had said. With power he could commit to grander plans and spend more time thinking than hunting down power. The myth that called these hills home was trying to dissuade him and while he did plant some doubt in the kitsune’s mind, Mitsunari felt a little more emboldened by his new clarity.

“I will take my tea.” His hand emerged from his kimono sleeve and he gently lifted the saucer and cup from the table as he rose to his feet. “But I will still cross your threshold and head up this mountain. Then when I have laid eyes on your shrine and perhaps you, I’ll drink and head back down.”

Mitsunari stepped away from the table, looked up at the gates that lined the staircase, and started forward with nerves of steel.

The voice did not reply to Mitsunari's decision, but the air took on an oppressive atmosphere. Each step Mitsunari took would feel like 10. The air would smell strongly of the burning fragrances and the ozone of the rain elsewhere on the mountain. It felt like all the smells and sensations of the mountain flowed up through the arches. Mitsunari could almost experience the mountain as he moved through the dense, spiritual place. The misty, subtle fog that loosely blanketed the steps was his only warning.

The fog and and sensations of the mountain visibly parted at the top of the steps and streaked towards Mitsunari. A powerful invisible magic of some sort was making its way toward Mitsunari.

The slow change in the atmosphere and the odd sensations that swept over him made reminded Mitsunari that he was still not welcome here. He watched his surroundings as he proceeded and caught a glimpse of the shifting fog. Something was here, something was coming. When the mist started to move in a way that suggested something was making its way towards him, Mitsunari did not hesitate to act.

He looked around for a place to take cover, but saw that the gates were the only viable option within reach. Without a second thought the fox threw himself from the staircase and behind one of the nearby pillars. He pressed his back to it and prepared his counterattack. "Screeching Barrage." His softly summoned lightning which danced around his fingers, echoing through the mountain. He wanted to see what, if anything, would come down the staircase to assault him. He was ready.

Although spilling the tea to duck in cover and cast a counter spell, Mitsunari successfully defended himself from the blast of air rolling down the steps. The clash of the two bodies of magic canceled each other out and gust of fresh out expanded out in all directions. The remaining mist in the air dispersed and the vegetation whirled violently for a moment. Any birds or animals in the underbrush were startled and pushed into fleeing. The earthy and soothing smells of the mountain were now replaced by a sanitized after rain smell. The atmosphere of the space was lightened but it was by no means more hospitable. That was the first obvious attack launched at Mitsunari since his climb of the mountain began and only more were likely.

At the top of the stairs, a newly visible glow could be seen. The source of the glow was not seen, but the bluish white glow wavering and cast shadows was visible despite the daylight just visible through the clouds. It wasn't clear what was waiting for Mitsunari, but it was clear it likely would not be hospitable.

Even while hiding behind the pillar, Mitsunari's hair and kimono were whipped around in the wind. He couldn't help but watch the aftermath of the collision of the two spells and be somewhat amazed by the result. Satisfied with the show and happy he avoided the hit, the fox trekked onward; climbing the stairs and struggling still. Whatever magic had been placed on these steps and gates was impressive and Mitsunari wanted to learn the spell for himself.

As he approached the top of the staircase and the light peaked over the landing to meet his eyes, Mitsunari squinted and tried to focus more so on what he could hear. He stepped up on to the landing and looked around at the scene before him, but all he could see was the light. "Even now you insist on hiding?" Mitsunari wanted greatly to tear the landing apart with an onslaught of spells, but so far neither side had managed to deadly a fatal wound, despite their many attacks.

His attempts to converse with the Guardian were also wasted as the entity only seemed interested in sending him away. "I have made it this far, surely I am worthy of your time now. My purpose here is not to destroy, but to learn. To learn your story, to learn what secrets a legend such as yourself can share, and what magic you can teach."

The kitsune stepped a few feet to the left, moving away from the staircase and seemed to relax a bit. "You said I am not capable of changing the world, but I believe with your help I can be."

At the top of the stairs, Mitsunari would be faced with the courtyard of a modest temple grounds and living area. The stones making up the walkway were cleanly swept, the sands were raked, and the garden and other vegetation was perfectly tended to. A handful of human villagers infront of the temple steps were looking around and finally looking at Mitsunari, their expressions filled with surprise and wonder. What likely had the villagers mesmerized and some fearful was the sheer number of blueish white flames floating around the courtyard. There were no torches or other sources of fuel to suggest the flames belonged nor was it dark enough that such flames were necessary for light. It was obvious that they had suddenly appeared and would serve a different purpose.

There were about two dozen flames floating around the courtyard. Upon Mitsunari's arrival, they all flew toward him as if homing in on his position. Upon closer inspection of the flames, they were quite hot. Any that happened to miss Mitsunari would erupt in a small burst of white, hot flame and leave behind a blackened spot on the stones or courtyard. Any flames that did not come into contact with something would remain lit and continue to pursue Mitsunari.

Mitsunari was surprised to see the humans that were within the courtyard as he had expected to see the legend who oversaw these hills. His attempt to reason with the spirit that called this shrine home was ignored and instead they went back down the path of violence. As the flames moved towards him, Mitsunari felt his blood boil as the mana in his body quickly fluctuated with the preparation of his spell. "Fujin's Scourge!" Throwing his arms out at his side, Mitsunari summoned the tornado once more, but this time he placed himself within the eye of the twister and expanded it to its maximum diameter of ten feet.

In all his arsenal there were no warding spells or barriers and the best he could do now was to create a wall of wind between himself and the attacks. He could only hope that the wind would be strong enough to destroy the fireballs. Last time this spell swept away his guard and would perhaps do the same to the humans that were present, but he cared very little for their lives. Even less so than his ogres in fact. If the Guardian would endanger them then so be it.

Forested Hills of the Mountain Guardian
Mitsunari's plan worked, for a time. The flames were light and wispy enough that the strong winds of [Fujin's Scourge] made the flames dance around Mitsunari. Caught in the wind, they swirled around and around. Some were snuffed out. Others were tossed free from the tornado, but all not resolved kept coming back and soon all the remaining flames were in the whirlwind. As the tornado became one of blazing, white heat, Mitsunari started to cook as the air inside the tornado started to bake. The peasants moved up the stairs toward the shrine, none wishing to be near the possible calamity coming.

A handful of the flames that didn't get snuffed out simply grouped up and exploded. The white flash echoed in the courtyard and the tornado was dispersed after a scorched Mitsunari was sent flying out of it with a trail of smoke following. He would hit the paving stones and slide, charred fabric and flesh left behind. Similar to the dark crator that was the explosion, Mitsunari was similar darkened and missing chunks. His clothes were darkened rags, ripped and burned. His skin and hair/fur badly burned, the worst of which were 4th degree. The pain would register in time, but the worse of all was the parts that didn't hurt. The parts he could no longer feel. Disfigured to a degree and wreaking of burning flesh, the villagers cowered at the sight and smell of his damaged body which made him appear more ghastly in some ways. Were this a world without magic, amputation likely wouldn't be out of the question

(The burns are permanent and inflict -2 grade to any physical activity: hand gestures for spells, walking, taking damage, withstanding disease or lack of food, etc. While medicines, wraps, crutches, and other items can be used to minimize his suffering and weaknesses, the penalties and dissatisfaction with the burns will remain. An A grade healing skill based ability or equivalent effect can restore Mitsunari's body. On the flip side, Mitsunari is now somewhat resistant to flames and other burning effects. Can't burn what is already blackened in this case.)

"I'm not so sure that is a good thing,"

Came a similar yet different voice from before. It was more feminine and youthful. It also reverbed in the open space rather than in Mitsunari's fried ears. A beautiful fox woman appeared from within the shrine. The peasants that noted her arrival on the scene immediately backed away and cleared a path. Those that could prostrated themselves and those that couldn't due to age bowed. A certain fresh, wildness of smells and atmosphere filled the space as she made her way over to the cooked Mitsunari. Her reply to his earlier comment matched her facial expressions as she looked down on him: pity.

"You have been found wanting in body, mind, and soul. I bid you leave this place, but you refused. You speak of learning what I have to teach but cannot follow simple instruction that could save your life. Should you survive this fate that has befallen you, do not return to my mountain as you are."

She then plucked a shimmering pearl from behind her outer garb and tossed it at the downed Mitsunari. The pearl sank into his flesh. If it had any sensation to it, Mitsunari likely missed it due to the pain wracking his body and impairing most of his functions.

Heavy footsteps could then be heard. The Fox woman had begun moving away as 2 of Mitsunari's minions had finally caught up to their master. Mitsunari would have one last chance: use his minions to leave the mountain or make one last desperate effort to gain recognition of the guardian of the mountain. Any further attempts could lead to the immediate death of the character and/or minions.

A scream the likes of which had never been heard before echoed over the courtyard when Mitsunari's plan did not go as he had envisioned it. His voice shattered just as his throat was scorched and he was flung across the holy site. He laid there consumed by agony and pain, unable to even think straight. The voice which spoke went slightly ignored, until she spoke of his return. Coming back to the mountain to face these powers would not be an easy task and he would have to prepare far better than he had.

As he was lifted into the arms of the ogres his burnt face turned towards the source of the feminine voice. "I will return." The fox promised in voice that was full of air and rasp. His singed lips made his speech difficult to understand and although he could not hear very well, he knew that his words were not as clear as they should be.

Hissing as he did, Mitsunari dismissively waved his hand in the direction of his ogres, signaling that it was time to depart. The group turned away and began their descent. The anger and envy growing in his heart would bring him back to this place one day.

A grade healing or equivalent can heal his body. Lesser skills, abilities, items may give partial comfort or remedy. Maimed title may be used to narrator your own rp to quest for a healer capable enough to cure or otherwise relieve the mechanical part of the affliction on Mitsunari. Alternatively, the Maimed title may be used to run an rp where you play out Mitsunari's afflication and cash the title in for x2 points as if it were a world rp, but doing so will leave Mitsunari afflicted indefinately. (does not stack with other point boosting rps or titles)

acquired optional title [Heaven Defying] - character has denied the will of a [god] and lived to tell the tale. The faithful may deem Mitsunari as a fool, reckless, or a calamity waiting to happen. The godless will be more likely to look at him with admiration.

item acquired [Pearl of Cultivation] - a pearl of shimmering light and beauty bestowed on Mitsunari by the Guardian of the Mountain It has untold years of power, life, and mana stored within. Learning to tap into it may assist in ascension. But until such knowledge can be acquired, the Pearl can also act as a catalyst of the D grade and include the indestructible properties of an orichalcum item. As it is presently a part of Mitsunari's body, he does not need to hold it to make use of its power.
