Graded [Frontier] Perilous Puddles

Wait a minute, if the guild wanted these flowers and there were a bunch on that rock over there. What was he doing waiting for these bumpkins to catch up, Johnny can be kinda sneaky when he wanted to, certainly more than these folks so he could probably sneak past a couple of lizards. Also gathering flowers can't be that hard can it, just pluck it like wheat right. Simple plan and simple reward not to mention it'll show those guys back at the guild how deserving he was of a higher position not to mention the full reward if only he did the work.

So with the self-rationalization completed, Johnny snuck away his look out position using it as cover towards slinking into the woods as he snuck to the far side of the boulder away from the other's sights until he was face to sponge with the it. Taking off his finery and draping it over a tree branch as he started to try and get a headstart on the others already getting annoyed at the texture attempting to climb it in the most stealthy way he can while trying to ignore the inhabitants. That being not very along with hauling his bat up with him to leave behind no hostages as he began his selfish ascent towards the flowers for glory and mostly cash at a rushed pace hoping to get as much of a head start as possible before they noticed.

Indicus was right, there was nothing around that could be used to climb in order to bypass climbing up the sponge. Kimberly frowned when Johnny spoke. Between Indicus and Johnny, it did appear they had a plan. The three of them - Johnny, Indicus, and Mr. Wizard - would make a commotion there on land allowing Kimberly to scale the massive sponge to retrieve their prize, taking care to minimize the damage done to the babies living inside it. It wasn't Kimberly's favorite, but he couldn't come up with another option. Planning wasn't his strong suit after all. "Okay" He agreed a lot less euthastic than he had been so far on this mission. "Okay." He agreed again more confidently this time. This was the plan. He needed to be on it so that he could do it right.

He stepped up to the immediate shoreline; it would be better not to be near the others when they get the attention of the bigger salamanders.
"Try not to kill the big salamanders, just distract them," Kimberly called back to them, "but also don't die. I'll be quick!" Promising, Kimberly took a deep breath. He didn't feel nervous, but it was a habit from when he first got into parkour back before he came to this world.

The water here was shallow, going up to the top of Kimberly's tall boots. It was mostly mud, but there were also rocks covered in algae. The sand gave way to the pressure of his foot while the rock gave little hold. Stepping back to the shore, Kimberly nodded to himself now that he had an idea of what would be under his feet when he rushed out. Now all he had to do was wait for the others to make a scene. It wasn't until he looked back at the others to signal he was ready that he noticed someone was missing. Looking around frantically, Kimberly hoped to catch sight of Johnny.

As the party came into their new environment, they would see that there was much room to move around in. There were a few large ponds spread out around the open space they had. Some of these ponds were from 10 feet to 50 feet wide. Best to avoid them. On the other side of this clearing, 100 feet out, there would be a figure walking into sight. The sight of a kitsune that had the look of mischievousness upon his face, a dangerous feel about him. He was a stranger to the group, but he was more of threat than they probably realized.

Seikatsu Mitsunari

1662594606392.png

North, South, East, and West, Mitsunari's search for a cure/treatment for his scorched skin and so far nothing he'd found could repair the damage that was done by that bitch of a goddess. Healers, potions, and even mundane medicines did nothing for the kitsune's condition. His scouring of the realm had brought him to his last lead, a blue flower
which was rumored to be worth his intrigue and time. All of his investigations into the flower had brought up mention of the guild. Pesky little wannabe heroes and saviors. For a moment the fox's mind ventured back to the time he was briefly a hero. The love and gratitude of the people who had employed him and now he found himself surrounded by lumbering monsters, fearsome creatures to who fueled the nightmares of the commonfolk of this world. It was the gods who had brought him to this world, then they wounded him, so it was only natural he reflected that same aggression upon the other creatures that these deities had created.

Slowing down, the fox caught whiff of several scents in the air that differed from the other scents of the forest. "We've got company." He warned the giants that accompanied him, speaking in the language of the monsters. The ogres perked up and greedy, malicious smiles started to stretch across their faces and some of them licked their lips. His wooden shoes crushed a branch beneath his feet as his group approached the pond on the side opposite the strangers. Mitsunari himself stayed behind, hidden within the shadows of the trees and his lumbering ogres marched on forward. "Bring me the blue flower. The humans are yours to eat and butcher as you please."

Deep, low chuckles proceeded the monsters' arrivals as they stepped out of the darkness and into the light with their swords drawn and just as thirsty as their wielders. The large monsters didn't hesitate to begin their assault.

There ogres rushed towards Indicus, Senjou, and...an elderly woman. They raised their swords, glinting in the faint light and then they quickly brought them down to slash the three targets.

The remaining two ogresmade their way to the plant, targeting the other two adventurers; Kimberly and Johnny. They would try to grab them in their large hands, hoping to remove them from their master's prize. Still lingering at a great distance from the group, Mitsunari eyed the blue plant that had brought him this far from his home. It seemed to be inhabited by some odd reptiles. A minor inconvenience easily dealt with once the true pests were swept aside.

The moment Johnny first stepped foot on the sponge... that was when they heard the first croak. Coming from one of the salamanders nearby. A second one took up the call, and in seconds the entire area was engulfed in the cacophony of warning cries.

The ogres covered the ground quickly enough. With salamanders running out of the way to find cover by jumping in the nearest ponds.

But the ogres had charged close enough to become a threat.

Thankfully, Johnny was already almost at the top, it was an easy enough climb when one wasn't trying to be careful. The ogre would have had a hard time trying to reach him. But...

But...

There came something that would get everyone's attention. The pond that they were all near began to bulge upwards and overflow. The water forming a dome as something was rushing up from the depths.

A giant from the deep emerged. A massive head with a mouth wide enough to swallow a horse, and smooth amphibious skin a light coppery brown with bluish spots.

To say it was huge... this... this was a Giant Salamander. And it had come to defend its nest. Every one they had seen so far had barely more than toddlers. This was the adult.

67bcfa2bb7246b799019b653c0823638.jpg

It was easily the size of a large bus. And as it pulled itself onto the bank, it would give everyone pause. The massive creature could swallow any one of them whole. Those familiar with this world, who have seen a thing or two, would know that these are normally gentle giants. Having a taste for monsters rather than the flesh of humans or fae or beast. But with the flurry of activity around its nest... it was here now to defend it.

The ogres knew. They would know. Being monsters themselves, they were included in the Giant Salamanders diet.

But lest anyone be complacent... the Giant Salamander was on its own side. And everyone present was a threat to its nest. With its eyes trained squarely on Johnny, Kimberly, and the Ogres closet to the nest.

Johnny needed to grab the flower now. For there would not be a second chance now that this Salamander had arrived.

Time was ticking, and this would likely be their only chance. The sun had already passed the point they had agreed to return. If they did not head back soon, then they would run the risk of being in these woods after a dark. And that was a death sentence.

All they had to do was get the flower and run... but could these new adventurers do it when confronted now with threats on both sides?

The three way battle begins now. Adventurers vs monsters vs Giant Salamander.

Skyhunter Skyhunter will be acting referee for combat during Invasion.

To the new players. An RP Invasion is when a player forces entry into an RP for various means. They are here for a limited number of turns to accomplish their goal. And then they disappear regardless of success or failure, as well as if they got knocked out.

Mitsunari's player has been kind enough to respect the low stakes theme of the rp. Nobody will be will be dying due to loss in combat. But If Mitsunari gets the flower, it could lead to a Mission Failure for Kimberly. For Johnny, Indicus, and Senjou, this is where you earn your keep and prove yourself as worthy of joining the Adventurers guild.

Good luck. And watch out for the Salamanders Mouth.

Indicus was watching Kimberly get ready to climb up to the blue flowers when he also realized that Johnny was not around. Indicus would not have time to look immediatly as he heard deep low chuckling moments before Indicus's instincts screamed at him. As one who trusted the instincts that have saved his life he dove out of the way, exiting his dive in a roll and getting back on his feet he looked at where he was and saw three ogres with swords. Quickly scanning around himself with Appraisal he saw Johnny on the sponge and Kimberly nearby with two ogres going towards the pair and to make things worse a huge salamander appeared and Indicus could guess that this one was not happy they were here.
Indicus quickly turned his attention back to the ogres in front of him. Getting into a fighting stance Indicus readied his clawed hands his body a perfect fighting weapon and his scales providing decent armor.

Combat Summery: Indicus uses Reflexive Dodge (F), Takes a look at the situation (Appraisal F) and readies himself to fight.

Armor: Natural Armor (Scales,light): F

"Hermes, there is a perfectly reasonable answer for me being up here" Well this was awkward as it turns out Johnny's sneaking away from the frontline had one fatal flaw the size of the sponge though if he was also being perfectly honest this was also their fault, everyone should know that the lookout is always the weakest link and never actually had a job besides sitting pretty. So, when he was inevitably found above closer to the objective than his teammates, the awkwardness was comparable to that one time, he stole a captain's coat (It was misplaced, and he just happened to find it after they left) or that other time he was found in bed with the inn keeper's daughter (Fixing pipes and a fever, it happens believe it or not).

Though the Ogre interrupted this with its appearance pushing Johnny into rushing his climb, if only there was some sort of lookout or recon position to look out for any approaching threats. Johnny just turned back abandoning stealth or care for the inhabitants of the sponge as he scrambled to grab the flower before all hell broke loose being his set primary objective. Attempting to move upwards to the flower the fact that he would be further away from the ogre and giant lizard is a nice side effect.

Though he did owe Hermes for that cookie, so he had to repay it somehow so decided to take the time to chuck down his dynamo Lilly towards Hermes recalling that he didn't see a weapon on Herme's person so decided a rental is in order "Catch!"

Combat Summary: Johnny Climbs upwards twice (Speed D), throws down his bat towards Kimberly (Steady hands E, Precision C)

Tilting his head in confusion when he finally caught sight of Johnny, Kimberly rushed closer to moss structure out of instinct managing the watery terrian with only ingrained pratice. He let out a short laugh of surprise when Johnny explained that there was a good reason he was up there without actually saying what that good reason was. However, before either of them could address the issue, dark laughter sprawled out across the clearing followed by the rushing footfalls. The massive pair of orges heading their way...which was concerning on it's own, but given the appearance of the massive salamander across the pond, there was definently a competition of what to be the most worried about.

"Oh no." On one hand, there were legitimately orges trying to grab him and on the other there was a huge salamander wanting to protect it's young. Both wonderful options, really, Kimberly thought starting to put his back to the moss rock. Cursing, Kimberly fumbles the bat Johnny tosses down to him. In order to keep the bat from hitting the water, Kimberly has to move awkwardly in the water, giving one of the orge closing in the opportunity to swipe at him. Either the orge wasn't as close as he thought he was to the fae or maybe fumbling for the bat actually put him out of the way, but regardless, Kimberly is left with a rush of air across his features and not an enemy fist.

Backing up to the moss competely while holding Johnny's bat in both hands, Kimberly pretends he knows what to do with the weapon. The mission suddenly became a lot less important, as Kimberly's main prioritry shifted to getting out of the area alive. They needed to run, but Kimberly also wasn't ready to leave Johnny stranded up on the moss.

Combat Summary: Kimberly dodges an orge's attempt to grab him when he stumbles to catch the bat Johnny throws at him (Acrobatics F, Fast F) and puts his back to the moss while waiting for Johnny to get down.

With the introduction of the seven-foot red stomach mouth monster and salamanders, there would be another visitor. Behind the original crew, there would walk a priestly good boy, the best boy some would say, one who has conquered feats that some would even think a priest couldn't! Or feats that the ordinary person did think a priest did, either way, their reasons and morals as to why they were here would not be known to those just yet. There was already a battle going on with orcs, a fox man, salamanders, a fucking grandma! It was only going to add to the chaos brewing already, being about forty feet away behind Granny, Kimberly and Johnny, it would be good or the priest to make his presence known if he was looking to team up and not be obliterated away but a crazy grandma.

The beady eye of the giant salamander locked onto the primary target of its ire as it pulled itself onto the bank of the pond. Its large bulk parting waters and mud as it swung its large head toward the sponge.

Towards Johnny.

Today was Johnnys day, for even though he topped the nest, the large would not endanger its own young.

Rather, the creature pointed its mouth at the young man, and from it would spit a small stream of water. Precise, as if practiced over many years spitting vermin off things it protected. Or wanted to eat off places out of reach. In this case... knocking a pest off its nest gently. So as not to disturb its young any further.

No sooner than the giant salamander appeared, then the ogres had a sense of fear wash over them. Monsters knew they were an instinctual prey of such creatures. They had come into this fight expecting easy fight, an easy meal. They had not anticipated becoming a meal themselves. Before they could even finish their strikes, they dropped their weapons and fled, leaving their leader little choice but to withdraw as well.

A very fortune turn for the Adventurers, and the bad situation was at least partially resolved. However they were not out of the woods yet, as the the Giant Salamander still had a nest to protect.

Kimberly had been able to catch the weapon thrown by Johnny. Probably a good think too given Johnnys current predicament, he couldn't use it from up there.

As for Johnny, the young man was a swift one. With the flowers just barely in hand, he would have just enough time to jump out of the way of the large spray of water. It would have most certainly have knocked him off. Staying on the sponge was out of the question, the unsteady sponge would make it very difficult to dodge. He had two choices. Pick a direction and jump... or have that decision made for him.

Indicus, while readied for a fight, would find himself the relief of not needing to take on the ogres. But that still left the salamander... he could probably see if the water hit Johnny, he would probably be blasted back towards Indicus and Granny. So long as Johnny was able to get those flowers, they had little reason to stick around any longer.

Finally, Johnny reached the top of the slab and began immediately without a care for such things as safety stuffing as many as he could find into his pockets and stuffing them into his hat, as long as he gets out of here that's all that matters succeeding the mission in his eyes along with the only reason to stay here. Slowing down after noticing the leaving of the third parties, sure it was almost as if they were mocking him but now wasn't the time to get irrationally angry at the fact, he wasn't going to swallowed whole due to being too weak.

The salamander's blast of water interrupted this johnny just barely jumping at the direction of Indicus and gran's though not fast enough to miss the blowback of water bouncing off of the sponge ruining all his efforts to stay dry even as he landed mostly harmless but freezing.

"I got the flower thing? run if you don't want to meet Indicus's mother"

Johnny than bravely fled after slipping an opportunity to diss Indicus running towards his stashed gear, grabbing it as he ran up the road they started from in a mad scramble

Indicus looked in disbelief at the ogres as they fled it just felt a bit anticlimactic. Indicus shook his headrefocused on the task at hand and watched as Johnny jumped off the sponge just in time to not get hit but still to late to actually avoid the water. Indicus could only shake his head at Johnny's barb and followed after the man, intent on getting away from the angry momma lizard. Indicus checked behind him to make sure the others were okay and following behind.

The ogres seems to think twice about getting a quick meal when it turned out that the meal wouldn't actually be so quick. They departed back into the forest in a similar manner to how they appeared, and to be fair, Kimberly understood. He didn't want to be eaten by the ogres and he's sure the ogres had a similar feeling towards the giant salamander. No one wanted to be food, Kimberly thought, before amending it to 'most people'.

"Gaint lizard for the win!" Kimberly's word started with a grin, but ended with a grimace upon seeing Johnny nearly escape the salamander's spray of water. At least he looked okay. Wet, sure, but okay. Plus he had the flowers! They completed the mission. Now all they had to do was get back to town....and escape the giant salamander.

Right. Time to go. Realizing that he was quickly being left behind by the others, Kimberly rushed after them.

Granny looked as the new group had entered- a man with ogres and some newbies. She had a plan to change the tides by doing some cool moves, maybe riding the salamander, as this had gone from being a trial mission to make sure the newbies were equipped to join the Adventurer's Guild to a possible bloodbath, with many people possibly dying for the flowers and their potential.

Then, they had all left, leaving the group as if they had never existed in the first place. That was a weird encounter, one that left even her blinking, but soon she went to focus on her charges. They had gotten the flowers! Excellent! They had avoided dying, as was the plan! Thing were going well again after almost going belly-up. A very strange encounter, overall.

With an agility that her age did not show, she sheathed her cane, walking up to the salamander and slipping underneath it, scratching it in that spot under the chin it loved so much, giving it the good scritches needed to distract it enough so her charges could flee. It did look quite cute, it's tongue lolling out of it's mouth. If the others looked back, it would be clear that the salamanders favored Granny and knew her- an important reason why she joined in the first place- to extricate anyone unfortunate enough to get eaten by a salamander.

This was mainly so the salamanders wouldn't eat any of them. A small part of it was that she loved the salamanders, as they were too cute. Like wonderful, scaly, amphibian cats. Then, when all four of her charges fled far enough away, she would plant a little kiss on the salamander before slipping away, doing a jog until she caught up to the group. "You're doing wonderfully!" She praised each of them. "This is the first lesson you learn as an adventurer- run if staying to fight would kill you!"

So it was that the fledgling Adventurers returned from the watery locale. A trip that returned them to the Adventurers guild just before sundown, with the blue flowers still in hand.

No sooner did they walk in the door than the raucous cheer came from the tables, shouting congratulations at their first adventure. Pushing towards them drinks of varying stoutness and breads of varying stateless. Questions followed of course, asking for details, if anyone got swallowed. And as attention drifted, they began to share their own tales of their entry adventure, or how poorly they faired against the giant salamanders.

All the while, the flower was taken in hand, and the mission stamped a success. A small bag of changed hands for the deed done, the new adventures getting their cut of the pay, and the newest recruits written into the big book of Adventurers Guild Members.

Perilous Puddles, End.
No more posting after this.

This was a simple rp! That took a small detour at the end. But I would say we made it work. I hope you all had fun with it. I'll definitely be looking forward to seeing what you all do in other Rps!

Goals:
RP: To be a simple fetch quest with low stakes.

Kimberly: Already an adventures guild member, he was seeking to have a simple fetch quest to learn a bit about the world and how things play.

Johnny, Indicus, Senjou: They were part of this mission to join the Adventurers Guild.

Slifer: Co-GM that helped me plan out the rp, and to help out by NPCing a character to keep things from getting too dangerous if anything were to happen.

Suggested Optional Titles.

Johnny, Indicus, Senjou: [Adventurers Guild Member F]

Nice setting, good flora and fauna additions, understandable and achievable rp goal, focus on characters and their efforts, and some useful but not smothering list of npcs to help the rp along. The invasion was a bit of a flop, but nothing the rp did wrong. Ideally more rp's will be like this. It is like a poster child for those considering the adventurer route. Similar approaches could be taken for other faction advancements. There was a bit of a delay in grading, but first in, first out is the policy.

Aftermath
