Graded [Frontier] Nest-door Neighbors

Uasal

The Swiftest Shot In The West
Isekai Hell: Nest-door Neighbors

1699208435628.jpeg

On a warm and cloudless day, the sun cast its golden glow upon a desolate stretch of land, a vital trade route that bridged the vast expanse between the Ryken Kingdom and the Eastern Empire. This once bustling artery of commerce had fallen into peril, for a formidable and ominous threat had taken root. A nest of giant killer bugs had claimed this territory as their own, and their menacing presence had cast a shadow over the path, making it treacherous for any traveler.

The situation had grown dire, and it called for cooperation between two mighty nations, united in their resolve to reclaim this essential route. The Ryken Kingdom and the Eastern Empire had put aside their differences, temporarily setting aside their political tensions to face the common enemy that threatened their prosperity. Each nation had dispatched a force to confront this menace head-on, determined to eliminate the peril and reopen the vital trade route.

Yet, the safety of the merchants and the equitable distribution of any treasures or valuable resources discovered within the nest remained a concern. To ensure fairness and safety, the neutral merchants' guild had dispatched its own representatives, individuals well-versed in matters of trade, diplomacy, and resource allocation.

As the clock ticked towards midday, the three parties converged near the entrance to the nest, knowing that this was the time when the colossal bugs would be at their most dormant. The tension in the air was palpable, a fusion of determination, curiosity, and apprehension, as the fate of the trade route and the safety of those who depended on it hung in the balance. Among the Eastern Empire's forces, Captain Aliquem, a seemingly carefree and aloof woman, excelling in combat with a sword and shield, stood ready to lead. Her nonchalant demeanor hid a cunning and manipulative mind that lay beneath the surface, a stark contrast to her carefree facade. She glanced at the nest entrance with a mix of determination and a concealed sense of strategy. She adjusted her gleaming armor, her sharp mind always at work, and exchanged a few words with her troops, rallying their spirits.

The Eastern Empire's military contingent consisted of disciplined soldiers, their armor adorned with the empire's insignia, ready to march into the heart of danger to protect their homeland's interests, all under the leadership of Captain Aliquem.

On the other side, the Ryken Kingdom had sent a band of rugged mercenaries and fearless adventurers, led by Kaelin, a grizzled veteran. His eyes darted between the nest entrance and the Eastern Empire's forces, his suspicion well concealed beneath his gruff exterior. The Ryken Kingdom's mercenaries and adventurers, each with their unique set of skills and experiences, awaited Kaelin's orders.

The neutral merchants' guild representatives were a unique blend of individuals with an eye for profit and a nose for diplomacy. Among them was Elara, a shrewd and calculating woman who had navigated the world of trade with unparalleled skill. She had an air of authority about her, but also a keen sense of fairness and diplomacy. She spoke to her fellow guild members, ensuring that they were prepared for their delicate role in the upcoming mission.

As the three groups assembled, the tension grew more palpable. The distant hum of insects and the rustling of leaves in the breeze were the only sounds that broke the silence. The members of each party exchanged glances, acknowledging the uniqueness of their alliance. They were united by a common goal – to rid the trade route of the giant killer bug nest and secure the safety of the merchants who relied on it.

Tyrmar

The cave entrance was an obvious entryway to danger, though he’d not seen their aftermath he heard tale upon tale of mutant bugs terrorizing the lands between the See and the Eastern Empire. A result of the war strategy Tyrmar gave his life for, and now a means to gain some travel funds before making his way back into the country. The trek with the Ryken adventurer forces had been fruitful, allowing him an insight into how their organization functioned by speaking to the older members as well as the leader of their party.

As always his experience being a [Camp Cook] made it easy to be head of the fire pit each night, passing out meals to all in company. Something he hoped to open a rapport with the adventurers, as he lacked as dire a need for sleep as the others he was quick to rise and late to rest in preparation for what would be a certainly harrowing adventure. His excitement only rose and rose as they got closer to their enemies, how long had it been since Tyrmar was able to throw down with an enemy of worth since he’d been unceremoniously teleported across the continent.

Rising from seated to standing in one movement he made his way back to the Adventurers party, “Alright Everyone! Before we make our trek inside, I wondered if it wouldn’t be possible to take a gander at the perimeter, make sure there aren’t any secret tunnels or possible surprises to strike us in the ass when we’ve made our way inside? What say you all!”

Due to a mutant bug problem in what was an important trade root for both Ryke and the Eastern Empire. Griffin found himself joining in with the adventurers guild members who were sent out to help resolve the issue. It had, apparently, to Griffin's knowledge, gotten bad enough for the two nations to cooperate with each other. Though Griffin still didn't know much if anything about this world's politics, he didn't find no reason as to why he couldn't lend a helping hand. While he wasn't the most talented archer, he was willing to help. These bugs sounded dangerous and maybe... if he did well enough he could end up as part of the adventurers guild. When they had made it to what was presumably the bugs' nest, Griffin had begun preparing his bow and grabbed an arrow for the situation where he might need it. After all, Griffin wasn't sure if one of those bugs would walk out at any second and, even so, everyone seemed to be preparing for the inevitable event of them all walking in and performing a bug extermination. During this time, Griffin had smelt food being made by that guy he still didn't know the name of. Unfortunately, Griffin hadn't been too keen on eating before a battle. The more he thought about it, the more he realized that this was a confirmed battle from the get go. The last journey he was on wasn't like that. Yes, there was fighting involved but it was mainly wolves and the party of the time had managed to basically scare some bandits it had seemed. With that being said, he had felt paranoid and kept watching the entrance to the cave while he was with the adventurers' party while twirling his arrow around in his left hand.

Aedrianna Belmonte

As Tyrmar called out to scout ahead, a young woman with colorful blonde hair, stepped out of the makeshift tent the merchants had set up. Her hands were full of two wooden crates that clinked and rattled with each step she took. A slight “Oof” escaped her lips, as she carefully set the crates down. Her blue eyes shot up to the one calling out. It was the man who’d cooked when they’d first arrived. She had to admit she’d enjoyed the impromptu breakfast. He’d done quite a good job for such a small amount of ingredients and tools. There was a slight hope to eat his food again after all this bug business was finished. She smiled to herself, and hummed as she turned back to the wooden crates to begin taking inventory.

After a second of losing herself to the melody and her counting, she looked around with a somewhat sudden realization. Her friend Hiruq wasn’t by her side. The large white wolf always did his own thing, so she wasn’t terribly worried. But it was their first time being away from The Republic, and the Paizu mountains, so she wasn’t quite sure what to expect either. Her gaze swept around the gathered, to try and pinpoint Hiruq. When she couldn’t quite see him, she pursed her lips in frustration. He was his own creature, and he did what he wanted. She just hoped he wouldn’t go running into danger. As the thought of her wolf friend running into the nest played through her head, she grimaced and grabbed a few of the lower graded potions, standing and turning towards Tyrmar.

“I’m sure Hiruq would join you, if you see each other.” She spoke with a smile, placing the potions down to the right of Tyrmar. “If anyone else goes with you, make sure you take at least one. Just in case.” As she spoke she pulled a small leather bound book from her belt pouch, and began to scratch something in.

Bloatfly Incubator's lanky frame would stumble into camp ahead of Maggot Corpse, his feet dragging behind him. Kicking up dirt and leaving behind a trail of leather and rubber, the shoes seemingly falling apart right there on his feet. Where on his left foot his toes stuck through a group of flies contended with a group of mosquitoes for dominance over the revealed flesh, only buzzing away when the Guitarist lifted his foot to move. Bloatfly either didn't notice or didn't care to the creatures currently assaulting his person. Ignoring the abomination happening just below his knees Bloatfly was ordained in a very simple punk rock attire. Ripped black jeans covering his lower half with a band t-shirt that read in big white letters "SHOTGUN BLOWJOB" although both the text seemed to be scribbled on by a small child. Greasy black hair sat atop his head, the long strands of unwashed fur covering most of his vision. Yet Bloatfly didn't seem to mind.

Adventuring deeper into the camp Bloatfly Incubator suddenly came to a halt, his head craning into the sky as it began working. Sniffing something that smelled pleasant to the creature which now inhabited the camp Bloatfly quickly removed the guitar from his back. Slinging it around until the instrument sat comfortably in his hands, his calloused and bloody fingers quickly slammed on the cords. Producing a sound which only Maggot Corpse and Bloatfly Incubator could argue that was music, opening his mouth he added some vocals to his new melody.

"RAAARGYLLGH"

It certainly wasn't the most pleasant of vocals but it would do in alerting his second half to the food in the camp. Communication was the key to an everlasting band afterall.

There was a quadrupedal entity which motioned toward the rest of the camp. A shambling creature that had leather clinging to his back and arms. Empty shirt that was ripped so much from the front that it seemed more akin to an open tattered vest. "SHOTGUN BLOWJOB" was inked onto his torso with some mysterious substance, it was anyone's guess as to what. Their shoes were peeling from the bottom. A tangle of hair which swayed ever which way it wanted without much care as to its symmetry. The grotesque thing was Maggot Corpse, he made the second half of Shotgun Blowjob as its vocalist. The vocalist's face hovered mere millimeters above the dirt path; his nose scraped the dirt and gravel, tattooing it with its sifting dust. A microphone stand with its ensuing instrument was strapped to his back.

When Maggot Corpse turned his head up the sourness of his visage was exposed to all the other parties that had convened near the entrance of the trade route. Maggot's face was scrunched like a newborn. Fingertips were bleeding and the flesh across was his hands marred with self-induced scratches. Rising to two feet he had hobbled toward the group that settled near the campfires and was offered a meal. Smashing it between two grubby palms it turned into a fine mesh within nanoseconds. Whatever was used to hold the food in place was quickly turned into an afterthought. It was a gesture completely unappealing to the common human and furthermore, they had arrived to this event not by their own volition but on account that they had been traveling on foot feasting on little more than insects and small mammals along the way.

Maggot would rest what contents he had smashed into his lap before taking it upon himself to grab Bloatfly Incubator's meal and garnishing it with leaves, dead crickets and finely powdered dust all conveniently sourced from Maggot's pocket. Maggot's frail and bony fingers would then massage the contents of the food, making an art piece that only he and Bloatfly could understand before inextricably planting chunks of it onto Bloatfly's body.

"Oowooop!" he exclaimed.

It was almost done as if to be an act of mockery to Bloatfly. The offense not clearly stated but a violation onto Bloatfly's personal space that was not consented to. The vocalist did it with such reckless disregard & with its criminal nature so flagrantly displayed that it would have to provoke some sort of action within the guitarist. The snapping of leaves and the crunching of small twigs as it painted across Bloatfly's face was becoming audibly unavoidable for the two musicians. They were undoubtedly subhuman in their behaviors and such would become prudent to their compatriots who would be traveling with them for the rest of the mission.

Rios sat with his back against a hastily made fortification. He had been brought on as a Mercenary by the Adventurers Guild since he had failed literally every test to formally join them. An appropriate course of action given how impossibly unfortunate he had been as of late. Today would be the day he would finally be able to take on the huge bugs he'd heard of in tales told in taverns under candlelight. He didn't have any money so buying things from the merchants had been difficult. Luckily there was enough miscellaneous chores accumulating that he'd been able to barter for stuff. Rios pat his swords that were resting on a barrel to his left. These were something he'd found after a Bicorn had kicked him down a mine shaft. After his previous weapons had all been broken in freak accidents. He had no qualms with taking these. Now Rios had no true experience with katana. He DID have some training with swords in general. Wielding two swords with no formal training sounded stupid but Rios could somehow tell that these two blades were meant to be wielded in tandem. Hence why he always carried them with him wherever he went. Naturally carrying them into the baths set up by the army caused no shortage of stares from the other soldiers. Wondering if there had been any sort of call to action. Rios picked up his weapons before deciding to take a leisurely stroll through the camp. He could overhear some of the Imperials refer to him as if he were some kind of vagabond or unruly sellsword.

~Luisa O'Sullivan~

1699300282325.jpegLuisa, clad in her Eastern Empire military uniform, stood amidst her fellow soldiers and comrades, her expression reflecting a deep sense of resolve and unwavering loyalty. Her eyes were trained on the leaders of the two main parties, Captain Aliquem and Kaelin, acknowledging their roles in this mission with utmost respect and attention.

Captain Aliquem, her commanding officer and mentor since Luisa's induction into the military, was a familiar presence. While her seemingly carefree exterior had always intrigued Luisa, she recognized the sharp mind and strategic brilliance that lay beneath. The captain's leadership was a constant source of inspiration, and Luisa felt a profound sense of reassurance knowing that she would be following Captain Aliquem's lead throughout this mission.

Kaelin, leading the mercenaries and adventurers of the Ryken Kingdom, bore the rugged and seasoned aura of a veteran. While Luisa held great respect for his experience, she was keenly aware of the underlying tension that seemed to pervade the atmosphere between their respective groups.

Among the representatives of the neutral merchants' guild, Luisa's attention was drawn to Elara, a shrewd and authoritative figure who embodied the spirit of diplomacy and fairness. Luisa understood that their success would hinge on their ability to maintain a delicate balance in this alliance.

The weight of their shared mission bore heavily upon them, transcending political differences and uniting them in purpose. As someone who had trained under the direct command of Captain Aliquem and admired her as a mentor and leader, Luisa was fully committed to her role in ensuring the safety of the trade route and the merchants who relied on it. She stood ready to follow Captain Aliquem's guidance and earn her respect.

That was until two strange fellows wandered into the camp and made quite a loud commotion in doing so. Sucking her tongue Luisa glared at the duo with detest, an embarrassment to the human race these two had to be somehow mixed blood. Several of her Eastern allies shared similar reactions but Luisa was the first to speak aloud to the duo, unmoving from her position among the rank and file.

"I suggest you both refrain from such barbaric behavior. Your insufferable noise pollution is likely to draw out the bugs and ruin our tactical advantage. Tsk, can you creatures even speak common? Or do you lack even that much brain power"

Luisa's words were cold and laced with hatred, her eyes glaring at the duo from aside. Though harsh her words seemed to get a number of the eastern soldiers to chuckle as they looked to the duo's display with judging eyes. This was the Eastern Military. This was the Human Supremacist Nation's forces. This was their infamous disregard for those lacking skills, intelligence, power, and or Human affiliation.

This was the Eastern Empire

BLOATFLY INCUBATOR

Time: Midday

Bloatfly Incubator would follow Maggot Corpse deeper towards the campfire and the food being handed out, his hands allowing his guitar to simply dangle in front of him. Bloatfly's body seemed to almost swing back and forth as the creature leaned perilously towards the left, the knuckles beginning to drag against the dirt before he moved the same way to the right. Stopping suddenly the amalgamation that was Bloatfly Incubator leaned forward, the weight of his guitar dragging him into the dirt. His spindly fingers quickly dug through rock and grass before reeling back, his reward in hand. Two fairly large beetles sat in the confines of his hands, Bloatfly inspected them for a moment before quickly shoving them into his maw. The sound of crunching filling the air for a moment before he stood, the cracking of Bloatflys joints replacing the crunching.

He'd arrive to the campfire and in turn Maggot Corpse mid mosaic, bending over to inspect the art piece that was created. With what seemed to be careful consideration Bloatfly Incubator ripped his left ring nail from his finger. Exactly why this extra piece of gore needed to be added to the piece only Maggot Corpse and Bloatfly Incubator would understand. It took some work as he carefully used his middle finger and thumb to peel the nail back, crimson lines of blood slowly seeping from the wound. Placing the piece of Bloatfly in the middle of the artwork he then dangled the wounded finger above. Allowing the blood to add that needed colour to Maggot Corpse creation.

The pieces of food being placed on Bloatfly was more or less ignored, at least for the first few pieces. His vacant stare seemingly captivated by the mosaic. It wasn't until the food got a little too close to Bloatfly's guitar that he reacted. Slapping one of Maggot Corpses hands away and shoving the vocalist, he turned his head. Responding with an insult of his own.

"GRUUUYPE"

With what would've surely escalated to a conflict that wouldn't have ended without one of them bleeding. Bloatfly's attention was grabbed by the woman who was attempting to speak to them like reasonable men. Unfortunately for her they were very far from reasonable. Incubator stood, matching her gaze as he inspected the woman. His sunken and glassy eyes looked up and down before returning to hers. Bloatfly Incubator didn't speak, truly it was hard to tell if he was even able to. Grasping at one of the pieces of "Food" still stuck his body he tossed it at the woman's armour. Pausing for a second afterwards, almost allowing himself to catch up with the action he just made the creature which stood in front of Luisa began cackling. Akin to that of a hyena, his arms shooting into the air as they waved back and forth. Furthermore he hopped from his left leg to his right leg. Never allowing both to be on the ground at once.

"EHEHEHEHEHEHEHEEHEHEHEHEHEHE"

Bloatfly Incubator screeched, evidently entertained by the woman. If Luisa wanted to get through to them it seemed she had to speak their language. Whatever language that was.

Griffin hadn't cared in particular about the two strange men who had showed up. The ones who at the moment seemed to be speaking gibberish and causing a commotion. As freaky as they were...It felt like it was nothing compared to the fact everyone in the area was preparing to fight possibly giant--but regardless mutant bugs, if anything, if they kept up with that behavior, especially around whom he could assume was a military professional, that it was already likely to end horrendous. However, he had taken the time to think about if he would join Tyrmar in scouting the area. Not like it was something he would be horrible at, he was a decent shot with an arrow, And he did have some speed and then there was his gust cloak ability. The more he thought about it the more he believed that would be more productive than sticking himself to watching a Nest that was surrounded by people, most of which had fighting experience. He walked up to Tyrmar and Aedrianna, who seemed to be talking about something called a 'Hiruq'. Griffin says to his best but minimal social ability.

"Sorry if I'm interrupting. But I'd like to aid with scouting the perimeter... Also, since I don't recall us introducing ourselves, my name is Griffin."

Aedrianna Belmonte

Aedrianna smiled, turning towards Griffon as he approached and offered to scout. She went to hand him a potion as well, when the rot wafted down wind. She nearly gagged then and there, the cloyingly sweet stench overwhelming her senses. A pale hand drew up her sleeve to cover her nose and mouth. It took her a second to spot the source of the stench, and when she finally laid eyes on the infested beings, she felt herself going weak at the knees. She'd signed up to help pass out potions from her father's store, and to help with recovering anything remotely medicinal. The idea of being anywhere near a battle against Giant bugs already seemed terrifying to her. Now here they were standing against, what an undead rock band? She had to admit, that had a good spin to it. That is if they weren't mindless gluttonous monsters. As they Whooped and hollered, and stuffed each other with more "Stuff" Aedrianna couldn't help the sound that came out. Something akin to a strangled mouse. She glanced at Griffons bow and arrow and thought for a split second, he's the best one to hide behind, because archers always stand in the back. Nervously, she glanced from side to side, for Hiruq, before inching her way behind the newly arrived Griffon.

"Not interrupting at all. In fact I think I might just stick with you two...if it means staying clear of that." She pointed warily at the wild sentient insect nest.

Taking a potion from Aedrianna’s pouch and gingerly setting in his waistband, Tyrmar took into account the new arrivals who seemed to be adding their own brand of spice to his meals, which was fine as long as it got consumed.

As they made their commotion and played with each other like half conscious babies, Tyrmar gave a once over of their disheveled rotting clothes and caught a Whiff of them from an errant breeze.

He was glad he’d smelled much worse but even the sickeningly sweet rot made him exhale sharply. “You have my thanks Lady Aedrianna, these will be useful in the trials to come. Ser Griffon, if you’d allow me use of your bow arm as we search I’d be honored, a short canvas around the area and nothing more.” Turning back to Maggot and Bloatfly they seemed to be starting a dialogue with the scum sucking pro slave state of the East, well he found no reason to interfere in talks of diplomacy.

Leading the party of two- three if Aedrianna stayed attached to Griffon- Tyrmar went just outside the immediate area of the campgrounds before addressing the others once more. “I’ll stay a step ahead to be first to contact, I’ll trust you to watch my back, and be sure to keep up.” With little more than a smirk he let off at a considerable pace with no sign of flagging, starting on an arking route around the cave. Rios had wandered by the gathering of adventurers and Imperial soldiers who seemed to have gotten into some kind of kerfuffle. Turns out the pink haired military lady was talking some mad shit about the adventurers. Now Rios didn't have the clearest picture of the relationship between the Adventurers Guild and the Eastern Empire due to not even being in the Adventurers Guild yet. He COULD tell that the supposed human supremacist nation was not too pleased to work with those they likely thought of as being beneath them. Rios contemplated saying something as his hands rested on the handles of his swords. He couldn't really approach the Imperials as he wasn't fully human himself. His ancestry included some non-humans on account of his cyan hair and eyes. Usually he dyed part of said hair brown because he didn't like how it matched with his eyes. Dye costed money he didn't have, money which he was forced to spend on replacing his armor that got wrecked after he failed to escape the Fae Forest safely. Deciding to head on over to hang out with the adventurers. He decided to use the cool new colloquialism that he learned from the mercenaries. Apparently the Eastern Empire soldiers really liked it when you called them Imps. It was a badge of honor that they should be reminded of all the time. Passing by the pink haired military lady. Rios greeted her with a "...and a good day to you too, Pink Haired Imp". After that he walked on over to the group of colorful characters. "Anyone need a mercenary? I happen to exactly ten minutes of experience hunting for giant bugs"

He wished he had a camera. The hike here had taken them through some scenic routes, and he was more than pleased by it all. Even under Luisa's command, the man had not lost his fascination with the world. Even when already presently employed, Seo had decided that, for some inexplicable reason, he would use this opportunity to continue exploring the world and taking in the many sights and beauties that it had to offer. Luisa, herself, was what one would call a beauty, but it was, truly, the world that fascinated him so, so much so that he had started taking notes of it all, stored up in his head. Every once in a while, he would refer to it, and smile dreamily at the many new things that he had learned and experienced. It had been, and always will be not so bad, this afterlife thing.

Of course, duty was ever calling, and he had found himself tailing after his captain towards a den of undesired parasites. Giant bugs, the brief had said. Not a fan of that. He had seen a couple of movies in his day that featured giant bugs as the villains. Those tended to take high calibre rounds fired out of scifi guns to take down. He doubted that this was the case for these ones, but it still sent a tiny shiver up his spine just imagining the same beasts bursting out of the ground now. He tapped the hilt of his sword nervously.

Unlike the rest of his cohort, Seo had decidedly chosen to keep his usual attire than adopt the official uniform. Standing next to the properly dressed Luisa and amongst the throng of uniformed soldiers around him, he stood out like a sore thumb. He would have liked to wear the uniform, but his current pick of fashion was much more comfortable. Besides, it let him blend into a crowd of civilians or mercenaries much easier.

Speaking of mercenaries, Luisa was clearly eyeing one right now. Was that respect on her face? He adjusted his stance, and rested both of his hands on the pommel of his sword. "That one's got your attention, huh, Luisa?" he said, trying to shift her attention away from the two that she was giving the exact opposite expression to. He was about to make another remark, before another approached them.

He clapped his hands together. "Oh! A mercenary!" He stepped away from Luisa, and took hold of Rios' hand, shaking them enthusiastically, blissfully unaware of the invasion of privacy that he was committing. "I don't know about Cap here, but I'm always happy to see mercenaries at work! I really love the way everyone handles things in their own respective ways, y'know! Name's Seo, but you can call me Squeak, and this is Luisa, you can call her Luisa, what's your name? And what kinda swords are those? They're so cool! How do you use 'em?" he rattled off the introductions at rapid-fire speeds, while continuing to shake the mercenary's hand. And continued to do so even after he had stopped talking.

Griffin had accepted the potion Aedrianna gave him. Griffin put his arrow in his right hand with his bow and accepted it with a gloved hand. First he examined it, wondering what it could be used for, but if it was anyone he could ask, it would be Aedrianna who had started hiding behind him after squealing, which made him look to see what was scaring her and thought one of the bugs had left their nest.he didn't see any bugs. Until he realized she was terrified of the newcomers. He had no issue with her joining them if she ended up doing so, but her choosing to hide behind him confused him. He tells Aedrianna.

"If it makes you feel better, but I am going to warn you about the chance of us bumping into mutant bugs."

It was only fair she knew the chances weren't zero. If they did happen to bump into a bug when they began scouting, he would at least be ready to shoot. Then he turned to Trymar and nodded in agreement to his orders. With a bit of difficult due to the small potion bottle, he had been able to prepare an arrow to be shot if things came down to it. And he followed close behind Tyrmar and kept an eye out for any suspicious looking creatures that weren't the ones inside the camp.

Aedrianna Belmont

Nervous was one way to describe her expression. She was quite obviously inexperienced with any of this. She nodded along as Griffin explained to her their chances. Her eyes darting between him and the undead rock artists. Her thoughts wandered to where Hiruq had gotten to, but she hardly had time to really consider his whereabouts. Her would be her protection just burst several feet ahead of her. She blinked in time to see the archer taking off after the chef. 'Oh crap' She thought. How was she supposed to keep up with that? If a bug did show up, she'd be eaten before the archer guy could prick it with an arrow. What to do what to do. Either go and get eaten by bugs or linger around the undead. Her gaze swept behind her, looking at the two shaking hands and the pink haired woman warning off the walking corpses. 'Are walking maggot infested corpses really so common that you can talk to them here?' Eighteen years in this new world still hadn't prepared her for this. Each step filled with trepidation took her another step further away from the conflict between the pink hair and the undead.

"H-Hey Wait! Don't leave me behind PLEASE!" The few potions she'd brought to pass out were forgotten on the ground as she took off after Griffon and Tyrmar.

As the three leaders were discussing how to best proceed, a sudden disturbance shattered the uneasy calm of the camp. The source of the commotion was a pair of ruffians, who had boldly invaded their midst in search of food. The duo seemed more interested in quarreling with each other than respecting the seriousness of the situation. Their raucous argument resembled the cries of wild beasts, and it grated on the nerves of all present. It was a scene that didn't sit well with any of the three leaders, but none was as visibly displeased as the Eastern Empire's Captain Aliquem.

Captain Aliquem, who usually projected an air of aloof carelessness, dropped her facade in an instant. Her sharp, cunning mind, well-hidden behind her seemingly carefree demeanor, was now at the forefront. Her expression grew stern as she observed the duo's unruly behavior. The situation had quickly escalated, and it threatened to disrupt the delicate balance of their alliance.

The two troublemakers didn't seem to care for decorum, and they continued their food-flinging antics with complete disregard for the mission at hand. As bits of food flew through the air, landing haphazardly in all directions, it was clear that a confrontation was brewing.

Before the leaders had a chance to voice their concerns, Luisa, stepped forward.

However, the troublemakers responded to Luisa's admonition with defiance, making an ill-advised attempt to hurl food in her direction. This reckless action proved to be a tipping point. Captain Aliquem, with her cunning and manipulative nature lurking beneath the surface, sprang into action.

In a blur of motion, she vanished from her spot and reappeared between Luisa and the food projectiles. Her sword and shield were drawn and ready, and she used her shield to block the flying food. The half-eaten scraps slid down her shield and fell to the ground, creating a brief moment of tension before they hit the earth.

Captain Aliquem cast a stern look at Luisa, her expression almost tinged with sadness. "Luisa, were you reaching for that book of yours?" Her tone was admonishing but carried a note of understanding. "This is a diplomatic mission. We can't afford to be seen as violent toward Ryken citizens, even if they are... problematic." Her gaze shifted towards the duo, and she refrained from using a more derogatory term, as instructed by higher command. "We wouldn't want to be scolded again, now, would we?"

The Ryken Kingdom's leader, Kaelin, interrupted the tense moment with a pragmatic suggestion. "I think it's best for all of us to let this situation die down and refocus on the nest ahead of us. Come, it's about time we entered anyway." His gruff exterior hid a pragmatic approach to problem-solving, and he knew that maintaining the fragile alliance was crucial for the mission's success.

Nodding in agreement with Kaelin's suggestion, Captain Aliquem's demeanor returned to its seemingly carefree and aloof state. She began to lazily stroll back toward the front of the military contingent, her shield and sword back in their resting positions. The confrontation had been averted, but the tension still lingered, a reminder that their mission was far from ordinary and that their cooperation was essential to overcoming the impending challenge within the nest.

After a brief thirty-minute scout the trio that was Griffon, Tyrmar and Adrianna would return having found nothing more than the devoured corpses of many an animal native to the area as well as the occasional humanoid skeleton. The area had afterall been sealed off in lew of this mission and the area thoroughly swept through in order to find the nest. That being said, their initiative had earned them a few brownie points among the leaders.

1699471282007.jpeg

Kaelin, the leader of the Ryken Kingdom's mercenaries, stepped forward, his voice carrying a rough edge that spoke of countless battles. "We've faced worse than giant bugs before. Let's not waste any more time. We need to take advantage of their dormant state and press on into that cave."

Captain Aliquem nodded in agreement, her aloof demeanor masking her true intentions. "Agreed. We'll take point. Stay close and watch each other's backs. Our goal is to eliminate the threat, secure the route, and protect the merchants. Remember our mission."

Elara, representing the neutral merchants' guild, chimed in, her voice calm and measured. "We'll stay with you every step of the way. Our members are here to ensure that any valuables found within the nest are distributed fairly, and to facilitate trade once the route is secured."

With the plan set and their resolve firm, the three parties moved forward, their footsteps echoing in the cave's entrance. The darkness swallowed them, and the world outside ceased to exist as they ventured deeper into the unknown.

Inside the cave, the atmosphere was oppressive, the air heavy with an earthy scent. The narrow passageway wound deeper into the ground, illuminated only by the flickering torches and lanterns carried by the group. The walls of the cave were uneven, and eerie formations of dripping water and glistening minerals adorned them, creating an otherworldly, almost mystical, ambience.

The silence was broken by the faint sound of scuttling. Captain Aliquem raised her hand, signaling her troops to halt. The source of the sound soon became clear as they spotted the first signs of movement – giant killer bugs, their segmented bodies glistening in the dim light, scurrying along the cave floor.

The bugs were indeed dormant, but they weren't entirely defenseless. They moved sluggishly, seemingly in a state of half-slumber, their long, serrated legs twitching sporadically. The group moved cautiously, their weapons at the ready, ready to strike if any of the bugs showed signs of aggression.

Kaelin and his band of mercenaries followed closely, their eyes trained on the grotesque insects. "Keep a close eye on those things. We don't want to wake them up prematurely," he warned in a hushed tone.

Elara and the merchants' guild members observed the situation with a mix of curiosity and concern. Their role was to ensure that any valuable resources within the nest were collected efficiently, but they also understood the importance of not disturbing the nest prematurely.

As they ventured deeper into the cave, the number of bugs increased, and the tension grew with each step. The echoes of their footsteps seemed to resonate through the cavern, and the bugs' antennae twitched as if sensing an intrusion. It was a delicate balance, navigating through the nest without provoking the dormant creatures.

The cave's ceiling gradually lowered, forcing the group to stoop. The air grew more oppressive, and the faint sound of water droplets falling from the cave's ceiling added to the eerie atmosphere. Captain Aliquem led the way, her sword gleaming in the dim light, her senses keenly attuned to any sign of movement from the bugs.

The path eventually opened into a vast chamber, the heart of the nest. The walls were lined with nests, each containing dozens of dormant bugs. It was a surreal sight – a grotesque tapestry of arachnid-like creatures, their bodies coiled together, their spiky legs overlapping. It was a scene that sent shivers down the spines of even the most battle-hardened among them.

Captain Aliquem, with her seemingly carefree demeanor, watched the bugs with a calculating eye. She knew that the key to success lay in not disturbing the nest prematurely, and her sharp mind was working out a plan. She turned to Kaelin, her tone now more serious than before. "We need to proceed with caution. Those three who wished to scout ahead at camp, you may do so now. Luisa, Squeek. Join them too. Tread carefully, if you can find the queen without alerting the main force we will have seized victory before we even begin."

"If you fail and the nest awakens fully, know we'll cut our way to you all, you need only hold out until we arrive."

"Are you sure about this? I agree a small force would have an easier time navigating these tunnels without the threat of awakening the beasts but still!"

"I agree, five is too few a number, if they wake the bugs can they really hold them off until we arrive?"

Grinning to herself the captain looked to the group "They'll be fine. Besides, if worse comes to worse I'm sure my two cadets can hold their own at the very least, and with them there, numbers won't be an issue, trust me."

"
Well, if they agree..."

"This is madness... but on your shoulders may it lay"

"Very well then, in the name of diplomacy... would anyone else like to join the forward party?"

LOCATION: INSIDE THE NEST

  • bug nest
The scouting that Griffin, Aedrianna and Tryrmar had conducted ended up with no result. Not that it would particularly matter as they would be joining the others in going down inside the nest. Everyone was ordered to stay as quiet as possible. As the party maneuvered down the tunnel, Griffin kept his arrow held against the arrow rest held by a gloved hand and a tight grip. He kept his focus on his surroundings, while what he did before this involved an escort, nothing quite compared to an infestation or mutant bugs, it was still a learning experience. The deeper they got, the more numerous these mutants became, huge and reminded Griffin of spiders in a weird way. For the most part, the creatures seemed to be asleep. Griffin would keep a slow pace. It would probably be a good idea to be slow then make a sudden movement that could potentially awaken the mutant archnids. As water drops echoed through the cave as they eventually made their stop. A group of the mutants slept huddled up together. In an odd way, it could remind Griffin of pride of lions. He turned his head towards the Eastern Empire captain Aliquem as she gave out her orders, and between the leaders the order seemed iffy and he could agree it was risky. But coming down all this way would be a risk enough, no doubt. He speaks in a quiet tone.

"I'm willing to assist with navigating the queen."

He began to walk away slowly, not leaving the scene as he waited for the others. He folded his wings in and began using his ability [Gust Cloak [F] ] to silence any noise he could make by accident. He looked back at Tyrmar and Aedrianna and stayed put waiting for them. He didn't know who 'Luisa' and 'Squeak' were, but given they were eastern Empire military, he was sure they would show themselves soon enough.

Inside the nestAedrianna winced, as she heard Elara state their duties so calmly and matter of fact. And winced again as she heard the suggestion of going ahead to scout, again. She'd gotten lucky the first time around but taking the initiative this time was definitely pressing her luck. She let out a deep sigh and tucked a pink strand of hair behind her ear. Her blue eyes darted back towards the incredibly creepy dead rock artists. They hadn't started eating any of the living as of yet. And they'd only thrown something at the lady who'd dared to talk to them. Though the stench was a bit much, she was happy to keep her distance from them. For the most part she kept towards the middle of the formation, trying desperately to avoid any possibility of running into the ants. However Elaras words made it plain what she was expected to do. That was fine. They'd be splitting up, and at least she wasn't with the rocking dead.
DALL-E-2023-11-08-20-55-08-Create-an-image-in-anime-style-of-a-young-woman-with-long-blonde-hair-ado.png
She moved to stand behind Tyrmar and Griffon, noting Griffon's arrow already nocked and ready. She frowned, realizing she had nothing to smack at the bugs if they came close to her. Her eyes swept down at her boots with a frown, they didn't quite look sturdy enough to do any real damage. For a moment she cursed her naivety, for thinking she could get away with not getting close to the bugs. However she was quick to slap her cheeks and reaffirm her determination. She reached into her hip bag and pulled out a small leather book, flipping through the pages and scannning each image. Finally, she gave a small "aha" And turned the book around for the gathering group to see.

"If you happen to see this anywhere while we're moving further in, cut it at the base with a knife and give it to me, but use a cloth to pick it up. Please. It's useful for making stamina potions."
crystalcap.jpg

Then almost as an after thought she hummed and noted, "Also, the bugs might have a hard exoskeleton. Or...erm...Shell" She cringed at her choice of words, before pressing on. "They can be used to make armor, and in some cases ground down for medicinal purposes. So if we come into contact, try to stab or hit a soft spot, and don't try to smash the shell." She felt a little nervous giving suggestions to people who were obviously much better equipped for the situation than her. However she continued to hold up the book so that anyone who would give it any interest could see. The mushroom actually was quite useful and it just might happen to be here. She had hope.

Rios

Rios was a tad less than enthused to have his hand so vigorously shaken by this strange man addressing him all of a sudden. He tried to keep his calm as the stranger rattled off a bunch of information Rios had never asked for. Apparently this Squeak was a subordinate of the shield bearing captain. Whereas the one called Luisa was likely some sort of mage. Rios was just guessing because his own abilities were about a miles south of mediocre compared to some of the other warriors here. It appeared as if two of the adventurers on the Ryke side had gone and annoyed the Imperials with their antics. Rios had no comment since it wasn't like the Imperials would listen to him when he wasn't human by their standards. "I have nothing about me that would impress an Imp lieutenant. Just a third rate swordsman who couldn't become an Adventurer" replied Rios while gesturing to himself like there was nothing to see. His eye on the Captain who leapt with the speed to block food in mid-flight. Rios wondered what it would be like to fight that woman to the death. If he weren't so third tier, he could have challenged her to a duel once this was all over.

Entering the caverns containing the giant bugs was pretty boring to Rios. It was mostly just other peoples tension and the sound of boots along a cave floor. Resting his hands on his swords. Rios awaited the moment the bugs leapt out at them. Unfortunately this never seemed to occur. The group encountered increasingly more bugs as they moved deeper into the cavern. All of these bugs were half asleep and hadn't yet sprung into action against them. Rios was disappointed but knew better than to start fighting without the go ahead. The alchemist girl with them was asking for a certain type of Mushroom for stamina potions. She also wanted them to try and not smash the exoskeletons of the bugs. Rios made no promises on that front considering he was fighting for his own survival. He DID however try to find the mushrooms with [Appraisal C]. Scanning the area with his eyes to find the distinctive mushroom. He overheard the leaders of their group begin putting together a team to go after the Queen Bug. Rios immediately went over to volunteer since the Queen Bug was probably the biggest bug.

Tyrmar

Though the trek around the camp was left to a waste it allowed time for the three parties to prepare for the journey into the cave, of course after causing the East some well deserved trouble before he’d be forced to treat them as comrades on the battlefield. The outliers of the party were obvious, the women who took charge would be one to watch out for and may make a good back to be against should they be pressed.

Following along with his companions into the bowels of the cave brought up less than pleasant memories, but as the dim light of the eggs multiplied his tensions were eased at the sights of unfamiliar beasts of large and sharp build. As they made their way further and further inward he made count of where each grouping of insects lay, finally taking a stop and listening to the Eastern head he couldn’t help but begrudgingly agree, such an endeavor would risk the least and in cramped quarters such as this having an entire company march through would be an act of foolishness.

“If there’s no trouble, I’m fine with leading a party further inwards, my only concern is whether we’ll have the ability to make it back to you without waking up any of the sleeping beasts. Should we assume that our goal is to kill the Queen itself if given the opportunity?” Turning to the rest of the gathering number he made note of how they could manage, an archer, two swordsmen and two mages if his estimates were correct. Yes they could certainly make the most of such numbers, hopefully the others could pull their weight.

“Alright everyone I know you have no reason to trust in me, but I believe myself to be reliably sturdy and should work as a good wall. I’ll take point with either of the gentlemen with the swords right behind, followed by Luisa and Aedrianna, with Griffin and the last swordsmen covering our flank. I won’t lie and say I have the most experience here, so anyone who wishes to stay behind or speak up does so quickly, we have no idea when our enemies could stir.” It had been a considerable amount of time since Tyrmar worked in a group for more than a short while, and even then leadership was a foreign concept but he simply hoped his message went across as sincerely as possible. Bloatfly Incubator was left cackling to himself as the various members of the group diffused the conflict Bloatfly created. Truly this all seemed like one big joke to him, a game that was nothing more than something to be keep him entertained until he set his sights on the next journey. Being left to his own devices Bloatfly merely played in the dirt, picking at various bugs and stones. Crushing any insects he'd find with rocks, sticks and his own fists, it seemed he was practicing for the inevitable battle. It wasn't until the call that they were going deeper into the cave that Bloatfly moved once more.

He crawled on all fours, keeping near the back of the group. His Guitar strapped to him, the blood stained pick intertwined in the strings for quick retrieval in the event that he'd need to rip a killer riff. Despite what some may call his lack of sentience Bloatfly kept quiet when they needed him to stay quiet, avoiding the bugs as well as he could while staying close to the group. He was painfully aware of his surroundings even though it may not seem it.

It wasn't until the group ventured deeper into the cave that Bloatfly began making any noises at all. Soft chittering echoed from the creature known as Bloatfly, while at first it may seem he was trying to communicate with the bugs the low tone may have it seem like he was mocking them. Or maybe he was just insane. Truthfully it was quite hard to tell when it came to the Punk Rocker chittering like a bug while crawling on all fours.

The bioluminescent eggs seemed to attract his attention for a moment before some instinct in him declared that he shouldn't attempt to consume it. Bloatfly idly amused himself as the group stopped to discuss their next plans, inspecting the eggs and chittering to himself.

It wasn't until after Tyrmar finished his speech that Bloatfly slowly rose from his grounded position, the joints popping as he did. Moving closer to the group he stood just behind Aedrianna, peering over her shoulder somewhat. Perhaps it was something from what their leader said or a sudden break in the chaotic storm that polluted Bloatfly's mind but he spoke simply and in plain english.

"If this nest is like any traditional nest you will find the queen easily..... Follow the workers carrying the food deeper, the queen needs to consume the most food to keep the colony's population high...... Find where they store their food from there you will find wherever she keeps her eggs and you will find the queen..... She will be protected though, they never like leaving their leaders unguarded..... The young ones taste the best..."

Bloatfly's voice was coarse, closer to a low growl. Upon finishing he returned to the far back of the group, once again seemingly distracted by the eggs lining the walls.

Maggot Corpse was spinning in place as Captain Aliquem unsheathed their sword. The bits and bobs of slop that were chucked at them curiously sunk from the shield. There were entire points of dialogue that passed by Maggot as he viciously spun in place. Like some decrepit dreidel he had spun his momentum out and fell into the dust that he had been crawling about in for hours. Grody patches of sediment stretched themselves across his cheek, he giggled as his peripheral vision see sawed before stabilizing. When the small platoon that had formed began their speeches he decided to give his own resounding speech.

Maggot Corpse, representing Shotgun Blowjob, stood up and faced the opposite direction of everyone else. "WEE WOGGA WOGGA!"

However, by the time he had given his resounding speech Bloatfly Incubator had already crawled into the cavern with the others and Maggot Corpse. Maggot itched his mass of hair and shook out some pebbles from the crown of his head. Maggot Corpse had noticed that Tyrmar and Aedrianna had vanished from the campsite along with the rest of the ensemble that had gathered to take care of the mutants that coalesced together further in the cave. Maggot Corpse's jaw would unhinge in astonishment at the rapid passing of time and realize he was too far from excitement. Maggot took it upon himself to venture with the rest of the committee and dragged his microphone stand across the dirt path toward the cavern.

The dampness of the cave system excited Maggot Corpse as he crab walked inside and underneath the ceilings dips. The scampering of the many bugs had inspired Maggot Corpse to assume the form of them for a brief period. Not in any literal sense, he had no capability to actually pull that off, but he did his best artistic interpretation of the mutant bugs by scampering across the floor and shaking his hair to imitate the twitching of antennas. All the while his microphone stand had slid vicariously across his back. This went on for the duration of their travel into the cavern until the potion maker placed a request for the others in the party to search for a particular type of mushroom and to gather shells. Unfortunately for her this had procured the fanatic interest of Maggot Corpse.

"Givegivegivegivegivegivegivegive~" Maggot would say in a low growl.

Maggot would scamper rapidly toward
Aedrianna and violently inspect her book. Not the contents there within as they were unimportant but the most surface level observations that could be made about the text. Maggot Corpse ogled at the yellow pages, the black text and the leather that bound the book together. Maggot would try and plant his face inside the book, to mold with the book, become part of the book. Of course he could not literally do this because he had no capability to do so however it was an artistic interpretation of becoming a book. His curiosity for becoming the book itself ceased however at the prospect of gathering resources.

It was not the idea of gathering resources for making something productive which catalyzed Maggot Corpse's interest in foraging. Maggot began walking about the cavern in search of miscellaneous items. Although Aedrianna explicitly called for mushrooms and bug shells Maggot Corpse had taken it upon himself to gather anything that was a material, substance or tangible thing. Maggot Corpse would pick up twigs, rocks, dust and smaller bugs and drop them off in the potion maker's inventory, hands, shoulders or hair. The concept of personal space was irrelevant to Maggot Corpse and he did not recognize it as an actual thing.

In short, Maggot Corpse was contributing nothing to the operation and only attempted to further any anxieties about him that currently existed.

Inside the Nest

As the creature's joints reformed themselves, and the Boat fly Incubator leaned in to speak beside her ear, she felt a sort of panic wash over her. But not for the reason she would have thought. The vibrations of his low and gravelly voice sent a cold twinge down her spine. The wild creature that looked like it ought to be dead, could talk, and he had a hell of a voice. She felt her breath leave her in one whoosh, and for the life of her she couldn't breathe anything in. For a second she started to feel her knees buckle, even more so when the more hyper active maggot corpse swiped her book to merge with it. She let out a small squeak, still unable to inhale as she watched the undead creature study her notebook intimately. Not that there was much to see beyond the ledger of potion stock she'd brought and some notes on medicinal herbs that boosted immunities. She took a staggering step forward, one hand up in fretful hope. When the creature finally lost interest and scampered away, she scuttled down herself to collect the book, checking to make sure that none of the undead fluid had gotten on it. She grimaced, before standing up quickly and rushing back to stand amidst Tyrmar and Griffon Luisa and Squeek She'd strayed too far behind and gotten a closer introduction to the other members of this outing. She was beginning to think she didn't want to know anyone else. But she couldn't help her gaze from occasionally swiveling at the strange owner of that gravelly voice.

"Uhm...I-Is it normal to see people like them? Wh-Who look dead?" She aired the question to anyone in general, glad she was finally able to breathe again.

~Luisa O'Sullivan~

1699650139347.pngLuisa acknowledged Captain Aliquem's orders with a nod, but her expression betrayed a subtle tension. As a direct subordinate who had trained under the captain's command, Luisa understood the importance of strategy, yet the presence of Tyrmar, a fae hero, in the scouting party added an additional layer of complexity. The Eastern Empire's ongoing conflict with the fae race had left a bitter taste, and Luisa couldn't mask her disdain for Tyrmar.

Turning to Squeak, known for his agility and swordplay, Luisa motioned for him to join her. "Let's go, Squeak. We'll cooperate with them, but we won't be taking orders from a damn fae hero," she muttered under her breath.

Approaching the scouting trio of Griffon, Tyrmar, and Adrianna, Luisa's gaze lingered on Tyrmar with a hint of contempt. "Captain Aliquem wants us to scout ahead and find the queen without alerting the main force," she stated coldly, her tone laced with disdain. "What part of that did you not understand? If we can kill it, we do so. If we can't we buy time. Need you be spoon-fed too? Has all that time with the Fae seen mold grow in your ear? Tsk."

Turning to the unsightly duo that was shotgun blowjob, Luisa grimaced as they interacted with the merchant girl. 'Disgusting' was all that came to mind. She did not envy the merchant girl in the slightest. Turning to Tyrmar again, Luisa's eyes wandered to his scared body and a grin slowly formed on her face when she noticed his slave markings. Not only was he a fae hero he was also a runaway. Surely there was a limit to what the East could be expected to tolerate in the name of diplomacy. Ryke was very clearly pushing the limits with this one, but as a cadet it wasn't her job to voice so, it was however her duty to follow orders. And her orders had been issued.

Reaching for her book Luisa opened it swiftly and with a practiced motion she flicked to her desired page, a red mist spilling from it. In an instant, her military uniform was replaced with a set of ornate armor. Closing her book Luisa slotted the book back into its holster and began to move forward toward the next tunnel "Squeak we're moving. Stick close and be ready to strike. The rest of you can catch up once you're finished picking flowers and playing with the riff-raff..."
