Fire and Raine

Kestrel

Angel with a Shotgun
Phoenix loves her job as a Search and Rescue dog handler. Her partner is a 2 year old Belgian Malinios, Koda. When the team is searching for victims of an avalanche, things go terribly wrong.

(Sorry it took so long. It's kinda a long post. My posts won't all be this long.)

The ambulance drove down the wet road. The crew was heading back to the fire station, after dropping off a patient at the hospital. The weather was nasty, with charcoal grey clouds overhead, and sleet making the roads slushy. They rounded a corner, and the EMT driving slammed on his brakes suddenly. The headlights shone on a dog, standing in the road. With the light reflecting on the rain, it almost looked as if the dog had angel wings.

The driver pulled over and both EMTs got out. "I think he wants is to follow him." As they got closer, he turned and walked away. The poor mutt was obviously a stray. He was muddy, wore no collar, and the crew would see his ribs.

The dog led them to a ditch. A car was upside down in it. On the ground several feet away were a man, a woman, and a little girl. Two EMTs began examining the patients, while Phoenix radioed for back up.

They never could find the owners, so the stray was adopted and trained as a Search-and-Rescue dog. Phoenix began training to be a handler, and eventually, the two were paired up.

~3 years later~

"Koda, sit." Phoenix ordered. The 4 year-old Belgian Malinios mix sat obediently and stared attentively at Phoenix. They were practicing basic obedience commands. Just then, her pager beeped. "We've had an avalanche in the White Mountains. Two snowmobilers are missing, but there may be more victims. We need you and a dog to come up and help. The pilot has already been notified. Over."

"This is Phoenix. Avalanche in the White Mountains, bring a SAR dog to find survivors, we'll be taking the chopper. Over."

"Affirmative. See you guys in a bit."

Phoenix and the pilot donned winter gear. After Phoenix was ready, she put on Koda's vest and boots. The avalanche gear was in the chopper, so they could go ahead and head out.

Inside the helicopter, Phoenix put a harness on herself and Koda. After double checking all the ropes, she waited for the pilot to give her the all clear to rappel out with the dog.
