"Hey kids, come look!"

Pengfei rose to his feet, brushing off snow and ice from his gloved hands. A number of hooded children gathered around Pengfei to marvel at his creation.

"Um," one boy began, but failed to continue.

"What is it?" A girl asked, two thin braids framing a polite smile.

"Isn't it obvious?" The hiss of his words carried in a whistle through a gap where his front tooth should have been. He gestured to several mounds of snow, lazily topped one onto the other and around it. "It's a badgermole!"

The kids looked from Pengfei's hands to the snow, silent, quite possibly in awe of his marvellous creation! "It just looks like a big ball of snow."

"Huh?" Pengfei feigned offense, earning him some giggles in turn. "But it looks just like the real thing! How would you guys even know what a badgermole looks like?! Exactly, you don't know," he stuck his tongue out, hands on his waist, only gaining more shrieks of laughter.

He only came to the Northern Tribe to get a taste of what it was like to endure the cold, the fish, maybe see what the folk here were like. Surprisingly welcoming. Though, he did find his furred coat restrictive and tough to move in. He'd have to grab a larger size next time.

"Alright, come a little closer. I'll point out what makes up a badgermole, 'kay?" He grinned, squatting and waving at the kids to come over. Once they were close enough, he started pointing. "So, they've got super long tails, and big claws..." His finger eventually moved to the mound on its back. "And a white stripe down the middle!"

Where the engraved 'white stripe' on the mound was emerged something small, red, and shrieking. The children jumped and fell back screaming, some even running away at the sight.

Trampling over the snow with his feet was a monkeyram, a red furred monkey, with black stripes extending down to a long black tail and large curved horns. In this weather, she too decided to don a similar furred coat to her companion, something that made her look stylish, but incredibly out of place. Among the screams and cries of the children, Pengfei could only laugh at the chaos that unfolded.

"Aw, man, we got them good, Cho!" He grinned as she leapt onto his arm and across his shoulders, chittering with him on the prank. He watched as most of the children fled from them, with only a few remaining. Their eyes were curious and hesitant. "Don't worry about Cho. She's a good girl, she only likes to have a little fun," Pengfei leaned down and pointed his shoulder forward, and Cho crawled closer to let the remaining kids look and pet her

One girl pet Cho's head before admitting, "Well, maybe it was funny to see the boys run off screaming like they did..."

Pengfei laughed then and rose to his feet. "See? Harmless prank, nothing more," he shrugged, though, caught a group of children in the distance, with a much taller, angrier child standing behind them.

Oh. Oh, no, that was an adult.

"Uhhhh, anyways, good seeing you kids, I gotta go bye!" Pengfei trailed off as he started to move off further into Agna Qel'a's alleyways. Not every adult appreciated Cho's and his kind of fun. So what if the kids got a little spooked by her? It wasn't meant out of badness anyway!

Pengfei slipped into the crowds of a local market, Cho hanging onto his long tangle of purplish-black hair. He could hear her coo and stamp on his back, clearly excited by what was on display in this market. "Easy, Cho," he whispered, "can't get in trouble a second time too quickly."

He sifted further through the crowd, until he spotted some woman wandering up ahead. Similar clothing to him, in a way that outed her as a tourist in this strange place.

'Can't get in trouble if you're not caught.'

Pengfei clicked his tongue. Cho slipped down from his shoulders, chittering quietly, and watched as Pengfei moved on ahead in the crowd. It was a game they played many times before, and rarely, it failed them. They just had to stick to their script, and keep seperate.

The man weaved in between interested buyers, bored locals, until he reached the woman, and walked into her.

"Oh, my apologies!" Pengfei flapped, taking her hands. "My sincerest apologies, I didn't even see you standing there and of course, there I am, walking right into you!"

While Pengfei made an extraordinarly huge deal out of a simple 'accident', Cho was beginning to move in. Her hands were sticky, and she was quick. She was sure to find something to pluck out of the woman's pockets.

YINMIN.

    arriving at the North Pole

When Yinmin had found out that her father had planned them a surprise trip to the North Pole, she didn't know how to react. Her mother seemingly knew and did not look as excited as he was. Travelling had always been an interest among the family, and they tried to do something at least once a year, but it was not an easy thing. How he managed to do this every year, even knowing how resourceful and prepared he could be, always left her wondering and inspired. Her mother did have an understandably uneasy look. They faced enough complicated interactions here in the colonies.

But now that they were here, in a place endless with snow and cold, things she had never seen or felt before, it was thrilling. The majestic sights reminded her of the stories of how the Tribe had carved their city out of the ice, but to see the details in person! Huddled together in Earth Kingdom colored parkas, she wondered aloud, "How do you think they do number two?"

Her mother narrowed her eyes at her in disgust as her father bellowed out in laughter, "Seriously Yinmin? Have some class, you're a lady."

Walking a little further ahead she wasn't sure which stalls or places to go to first. Obviously, things were marked so that the no-no areas would stay unexplored. Respectable boundaries, guess her father was right. There did not seem to be anything to get worked up over besides not letting the locals know exactly where they come from and that she could bend fire. Her parents had given her a rendezvous point for her to meet them so she could do some exploring of her own, a recent privilege she was appreciative of.

At some point she was drawn to a gathering of people listening to one of the tribesmen telling them about their culture. Seal jerky in a temporarily ungloved hand she was making her way before a body bumped into her. Offsetting, but not necessarily unexpected in a place amassed with tourists. "Uh, yeah, no, no it's alright," she tried to console and move on, but he just kept talking! She yanked her hands from him as she recognized her food was still in one of her hands, my jerky, and uncomfortable keeping them clasped. She did not notice the little ram monkey in her coat, unused to the thickness meant to keep her warm.

"ANYWAYS," it was probably louder than it needed to be, but she wanted to use her voice to drown at his incessant ramblings, becoming suspicious. Was he some sort of creep or the type to just profusely apologize over nothing? Either it was needless, "Have you tried the seal jerky, it's pretty tasty?" She made an easy effort not to imagine the process of potentially cute seals being made into the snack. "It's like, 3.99 or something at that stall over there." She didn't even point just made sure to pocket her bag of snacks. Wait. Where's her coin purse?

PENGFEI & CHO

  • location

    North Pole

The crowd made for an excellent cover. While most were distracted by a local explaining their culture, most likely to entice them into buying some rare and wonderful water tribe merchandise, it meant Pengfei and Cho could get to work quite easily.

And quite easily they did, with Pengfei’s insistence on holding this girl’s hands and making a whole distraction out of it.

He didn’t need to look to know Cho’s sticky fingers rummaged in the girl’s pocket. She knew to be light and quick with her hands and by the time the girl tugged herself away from him, the little thief was already out of her pocket. Pengfei smiled, which was lucky considering to where the conversation turned.

“Oh, yeah. Super tasty. Have you ever dipped it in a tangy sauce? Really brings out the flavour,” he grinned, and went so far as to laugh at that. As her hands went to her pocket, Pengfei’s eyes moved towards the legs of the crammed tourists. If he didn’t see Cho, that was usually a good sign that she had skittered off to a place of safety. The two could reunite and share the spoils in a safer zone.

Pengfei, however, couldn’t leave so soon, not when the young women started to pat her pockets and twist in that panicked way all his victims did when they lost their valuables. He faked a frown. “Something the matter?” Acting became second nature to him. Showmanship was needed when strumming the qing-qing after all, and he had to provide enough entertainment and a straight face when his companion was out pinching the coins of his audience.

“If you don’t have the money for it, I can certainly buy you some. Consider it an apology from me for bumping into you.” On cue, the man started to pat his pockets. Pause and purse lips for dramatic effect. Start patting again. Frown and look extremely troubled.

“My purse…damnit,”
he swore under his breath before he sighed, looking around him to keep up the act. “I knew I shouldn’t have worn it so loose!” If they gave out awards for playing the victim, Pengfei was sure to win the best of them all for it.

Cho, in the meanwhile, scurried around and between the legs of the crowd, coin purse secure in her hand. Though, on her travels, she saw another purse just dangling from a man’s hip and her eyes widened at the sight. Another coin purse couldn’t hurt, could it? And Pengfei would be mighty pleased at two coin purses pinched!

Temptation won out as she approached the man while he was in conversation with a vendor, rough hands reaching out to the goods.
