Characters

Jack Varks. Male. 23. Very pale with short, curly (and unmanageable) raven black hair and blue eyes. Born December 3rd. Is also American. Height: 5"2. Weight: 120-135ish. Skinny, and has a tall stature despite him being 5"2. Has a knack for tinkering with robots. Has had a crush on yc forever but bc Jack is an introvert it is barely noticed. He has loneliess and you will often find him sitting alone, seeming to talk to his cat. Likes chocolate, cats, yc, music, and bots. Dislikes vegetables, dogs, blood, and repetition. Doesn't really like violence all that much but loves watching bot fights (especially winning them). Likes heavy metal and rock music but is kind of a nerd. Almost always wears the blue-striped sweater his dad gave him before he died. Is almost blind without his glasses (huge red rims). Owns a cat named Fancy (tuxedo female)
Full name: Harvey Cladwell
Nickname: Harv
Gender: Male
Species: Human
Date of birth: June 20th
Age: 26
Nationality: American

Appearance

Height: 5’8
Weight: 157 lbs

Personality: Harvey is a sociable kind of guy, always up for a nice chat. He sort of grew up defending his friends, so he’s got a pretty good knack for fighting. He doesn’t back down from a fight unless he has to, and his quickness lets him win more often than not. He’s a fan of the bot fighting scene and tries to help Jack the best he can, but sometimes it doesn’t work out the best.

Backstory: Harvey’s father was a mechanic, and Harvey learned from him while also inheriting his workshop. Since him and Jack were kids, they always liked the bot fighting since the start of it all. Jack was usually the one who went out to do the fights while Harvey stayed in the shop, despite their different personalities. Harvey was an only child, and his father raised him until he died when Harvey was 24, leaving the business to him. He lets Jack stay with him, since they are childhood friends, but at the moment Harvey sleeps on the couch while he lets Jack have the bedroom to sleep in. He has no pet himself, and he's just fine with Fancy in the shop.

The time was approaching dusk, which meant that the sun was still out, but almost touching the horizon. There was a nice purple-orange glow in the sky, and the last rays of light were weakly coming through the windows of the rundown Cladwell Mechanic Shop. It was an old family business, with a living space above the large mechanic garage. It had two bedrooms, a living space, a bathroom, and a small kitchen. Not much, but it was enough. The main bedroom was still in use, but the second one had turned into a store room of sorts. Spare parts, incomplete projects, the works. The living space was currently unoccupied, as both tenants were out of it at the moment.
A blond man was sitting in the garage shop, a Camero that was being worked on besides him. Harvey sighed, running a hand through his hair as he looked out towards the road. The shop was along a well used road, mostly a stop for people with car troubles coming in and out of the town down east. It was surrounded by trees, and there was a forest further in the back. Harvey was looking towards the west, waiting for his friend to come back home. Jack had gone off to another bot fight, again, and Harvey was waiting for him to return. He huffed softly, leaning back in the lawn chair as he kept watching. Part of him was hoping that Jack had won this time, but the odds were mostly in the favor that another robot was busted up and beyond repair, and that they would be in another betting debt. He kicked his boot at the ground, kicking up some dust that floated up before settling again.

Jack was stuck on one side of the stands cheering on his bot. Not like anyone could hear him anyways above the roar of the crowd around him. He was cheering for his bot, George 3 but it seemed the bot had trouble with sharp turns. The other person's bot maneuvered around Jack's bot with ease and jabbed George 3 in the side, frying his internal wiring and signaling defeat. Jack's air seemed to deflate right out of him. His opponents bot spun circles and the owner of the bot was already declaring victory when George 3 shot up from the ground and sent the other bot rolling across the rink. George 3 stood still for a moment, then shot several lasers at the other bot before toppling to the ground again. But not before the other bot exploded. Jack could sense the crowds surprise and pride swelled up in Jack. He knew adding lasers to George 3 would redeem him from his first and second counterparts. He drove home in his dark tan truck, close to 6k in his pocket, and a total nag to tell Harv all about his victory.

Later, Harvey could see his friend's truck driving up the road and he stood up. The blonde jogged down the dirt driveway that lead to the paved road, stopping when he was near the end of it. He pushed his hand through his hair again, his other hand on his hip. The cool air of the dusk bushed against his bare arms and he fiddled with the hem of his tank top as Jack's truck came up the drive. Once it passed him he started to jog next to the driver's window, since it wasn't going very fast up the dirt. "How'd it go? What happened?" Harvey yelled over the sound of tires on dirt and the engine, trying to sneak a glance at the truck bed while keeping his pace with the vehicle. He couldn't see, so he had no idea if the robot was scraped or still intact. He kept speed with the truck until it reached the garage, which is where Harvey stopped and took a step back as he waited for Jack to get out and talk to him.

Jack smiled with an overwhelming feeling of joy as he took the money out of his pocket and showed Harv. He did it so fast his red glasses nearly fell off his face, so he had to readjust them. He wasn't ever really good at explaining things but it made him happy to try as he described how the lasers went pew pew to the other bot. Jack also liked the feeling of seeing Harv's face light up with pride whenever they won. Even Fancy came out to rub their legs with congratulation, but it was probably just the time to feed her. "So...uh..." Jack tried to hide his face in embarrassment. "This is more than enough to pay off the debt...d-do you want to grab some dinner or ice cream?" He tried to say it casually as they walked up to the house, but he was still nervous Harv would say no or worse be suspicious. Jack has been best friends with Harv for more years than he can remember. Harv had been there for his when his father passed and he had been there for Harv when he got bullied for even hanging out with Jack. When Harv got the inheritance he insisted that Jack stay with him in the master bedroom but Jack still felt bad about it to this day. He couldn't risk asking more of Harv by saying what he thought every day out loud. At least he could always talk about it with Fancy later. Jack noticed that he had gone deep in thought and shook his raven black hair. Before, motioning inside the house.

Harvey looked at Jack with a mix of bewilderment and amazement, blinking rapidly. "Jack, Jesus Christ, that's a stack!" He exclaimed, walking along side his friend as they headed for the house. "What bot did you take this time?" This was a huge win for them, even more than usual. That did make Harvey a bit suspicious, as wins this big were rare and few between, but he was more overwhelmed by the pure joy and happiness that this time was a win at all. He quickly leaned down to pick up Fancy before heading inside, holding the cat as he headed towards the kitchen to look for her food. "I mean, we should be saving it so we don't lose it all again in a bet gone bad. But, dinner does sound good, we can head to town." He put Fancy down on the kitchen floor before searching for her bowl and the cup to feed her with. "Hell, we can buy Fancy something fancy to eat while we're out so she can have a nice dinner tomorrow." He joked, chuckling as he ran a hand through his hair again. It was growing, but he always kept it at a manageable length for the job. Not too long, but not too short.

"Oh, I brought George the third. About that...yeah, I think I broke him..." He looked Harv in the eye. "Yeah, we could probably use better defense for George the fourth when we build it!!" He laughed trying to make light of the situation. Why was he so nervous all of a sudden? They had just won for once!! Jack saw Harv run his hand through his perfect hair and thought that when he even attempted to cut his own the scissors got stuck. Good thing his hair was naturally short, otherwise he would look like a hobo. "You're right...that would be very nice. So, what designs do you have in mind for any new bots? We could always go to the junkyard there's tons of loot e could find there. Whether it's useful or not." He laughed and put his coat on separating the money so they could save it evenly and put it in a locked drawer.

"Woah woah woah, you used George the third?" Harvey paused, looking over at Jack. There was a moment where they stared at each other, then he sighed loudly, leaning his hands against the counter and looking down at it. "That's why you got so much for winning. It was a tech fight." He stood up with a huff and rubbed his face, putting his hands on his hips afterwards. He looked back at Jack and scratched his head. "I'll take a look at him when we get back. It's too late for a junk run today, it'll be too dark once we get back from dinner." He walked over to the couch where his own jacket was laying, and he put it on.

"I'm sorry, I know that tech fights are risky...but I still have the parts in the car and the laser still works." Jack attempted to stay positive but it was hard for him. He left to go to the his closet to look at what he was going to wear. He cringed, a lot of stuff in their was old-weeb clothes that he hadn't worn since the age of dinosaurs. He took his dad's sweater off and put it in the closet, choosing to wear a standard thin-gray jacket. At least it had pockets. He always kept chocolate bars in his pockets in case of emotional emergencies. aAlthough it wasn't that cold outside it was still a bit chilly in the cold-crisp night air--perfect jacket weather. They walked to the truck, it was the car they used most often. It was actually Jack's mom's truck and she gave it to him so she could buy a van. Jack jumped in shotgun so that Harv could drive. "So, Where are we going?" Jack asked him. Anywhere that Harv chose was always more than good enough for him.

"At least...let me know next time, okay? If you never came back home I'd be worried sick if I had no clue where you were." He sighed, putting his hands in his jacket pockets. When Jack came back down from his room Harvey followed him out, locking the door behind them. They virtually had no neighbors, but this was more of a precaution against those teenagers who try to find abandoned places to get it on in. Harv got into the driver's side, getting the keys from Jack so he could start the car. "Let's just drive through town, see what catches our eye." He suggested to Jack, looking over at him.

Jack had an offended look on his face."I'm a grown man. What do you think would happen? The worst case scenario is that I'll get arrested because pfft. Who's going to kidnap a twenty-three year old nerd? The odds of that are, like, nothing. You don't need to worry about me Harv, you're not my mom." He quarreled, looking out the window of the nearby buildings. The different colors blurred as they drove past. As they drove by the lines of different fast food chains Jack had the urge to mention Mcdonald's but that would go against his argument. "...I'm sorry that I didn't tell you, Harv. But...I hate us being in debt and we need money. Actually, I recently applied for a job at a comic book store to pay off for bot-repair. I wasn't going to tell you until I got the job but...I shouldn't be going off on ventures without telling you."

"Yeah, well, they could take Fancy for all we know. We've both heard the stories of people losing too much and disappearing or at best losing a finger." Harvey pointed out, glancing at Jack before looking at the road again. With his friend being three years his junior, and much shorter than him at that, Harv always felt like he had to protect him in some way. He didn't want anything happening to Jack on his watch. There was some silence after Jack spoke, then Harvey sighed. "Look, I know you're trying to help, Jack, and that's great, but you just need to be careful out there. The only fights we can get to are the underground ones that are close by, and dangerous people can go to them, too. Just, watch yourself." He looked back over at Jack with a smile. "Good on you for applying. I hope you get it."

Jack laughed. "I know that there dangerous but you must remember that one phase I had in sixth grade when I was so obsessed with anime. I took all the classes of karate, jujitsu, and the like." His face went dark for a second. "I still got bullied, though. I didn't get beat up but random people would hide my stuff and ignore me when I tried to join social groups. There were other weebs, true, but bullies spread so much slander they didn't trust me anymore.." Jack shrugged and took some chocolate from his pocket (hiding it because Harv doesn't like him eating in the truck.). "That phase is long gone though, all that remains are the ridiculous outfits and the ability to defend myself." He stopped when Harv congratulated him. "Thank you, I hope I get the job, too. If I don't get it I might get a job at Home Depot or something. Like, as a cashier though. I can't lift diddly squat with these noodles." He waved his arms and laughed.

"Annddd I usually found the stuff they hid when you couldn't find it." Harvey stated with a chuckle. "Ohhhh, I'm glad pretty much all of those bastards moved out of town when we finished high school. I'd like to see them try fucking with you now with me holding a wrench next to you." He turned left down a street, heading towards the part of town where there were more diners and stores than fast food and gas stations. He was still just cruising until they decided on where to eat.
"But hey," he chirped up, "if I can ever find a shadow function I can put into a bot, then you could teach it some of your jujitsu and such. Better for normal fights." He reached over and messed up Jack's hair at his remark about his arms and Harvey laughed a bit. "Leave your noodle arms alone, they never hurt you!"

"A shadow function would be amazing!! I could teach that bot to be better than Bruce Lee!" Jack made a face and laughed. "Yeah, I remember. Even when you were nine I felt like you knew every car that ever existed. I remember that one time when I couldn't find my glasses for a week and then we had to switch drawings in art. Don't ever attempt to draw a school bus again, please." He perked up as he saw an odd sign at the edge of one of the plazas. "Hey, how does 'Burafukyatto' sound? Is that a sushi place or something?" Jack pointed to the japanese-style thing with lanterns.

"In my defense, I had to make the school bus look like a 1st grader drew it. You're younger than me, Jacky." Harvey laughed. He looked out the window where Jack was pointing, raising an eyebrow. "Could be a noodle shop too. Either way, sounds good." He turned the steering wheel to pull into the parking lot. The sun had set at this point, so the only lights were from the truck's headlights, the neon lights of the plaza sign, and the lights coming from the shops themselves. "Looks like they're open." Harvey commented.

Jack stepped out onto the truck and immediately noticed all the junk scattered around the parking lot. Not even two steps out of the car, he stepped on a coke can. He sighed loudly "Should've seen this coming. Cruddy oriental restaurant? Perfect hangout for thugs. " He turned to Harv as they walked up to the place. "Let's just eat and get out of here. The vibes are odd here, and besides...It's probably not that interesting anyway." Jack twirled back around and opened the covered-in-posters-with-chinese-lettering door and swore that if he had epilepsy, he would be doing the disco on the floor already. He motioned Harv inside and heard behind the mouse-yelling volume of death metal a "Welcome, to Burafukyatto. Wait. Just give me a sec-" and a tall-crinkly-Asian lady with eyes that looked like they'd pop out of her skull any second appear behind the counter. "Hello, how can I help you?" Her voice was like nails scraping glass. Jack looked around for a second and under the disco neon lights he noticed a statue of Anubis propped up against the wall. Yup, we should've just gone to IHOP but noo. I had to go what about that place? Just because it caught my eyes and now my eyes are under rapid fire... "Umm...Is this a restaurant?" He asked the lady that also just looked like a tall version of E.T. with a bun.She stared at him for a moment, making him increasingly uncomfortable. "Yes, deary, it is. In fact we sell nachos, tacos, salads, chicken mcnuggets, sushi, instant ramen, and a variety of other things. Meal also comes with fortune cookies." She held up a bowl that suspiciously looked like it had a curse word written on it but Jack's eyes burned so much he couldn't tell. "Harv? What do you think...?" He asked nervously half-thinking that if he told the lady he didn't want to eat here she would pull a rifle out from under her desk.

Harvey kicked away a can that was closer to his own side, sighing. "Well, this whole plaza looks sketchy. Maybe this place won't be as sketchy as the rest of it." He remembered a time when he had gone on a road trip with his dad, and they had been in some suspicious looking parts of town that had great food places. But, he moment they stepped inside, he knew he had been wrong. The sudden change from night time to what looked like arcade lights blinded him momentarily, and once he got he vision back he knew that they didn't want to stay in this place. Everything was wrong: the lights, the music, the statue, even the way the women spoke. Her English sounded perfect, which was extraordinarily rare for a woman as old as her running a oriental restaurant. When she started listing off what they had, he instantly knew they had to get the fuck out of there. He grabbed onto the lower back of Jack's jacket, something they would do as kids when Harvey wanted to let Jack know they would be okay without saying it out loud. He smiled kindly at the lady with a chuckle. "Sorry, ma'am, I think we stepped into the wrong place. So sorry to trouble you." Still smiling, he gave a small tug on Jack's jacket: time to go. Now.

Jack tensed up as Harv touched his shoulder. Not becuase of Harv but because the tension in the air was odd. In fact, he smelled something odd. It was the smell of incense..."Mr.Cladwell and Mr.Varks... Is that you? I haven't seen you in such a long time. High school, was it? When you a%$holes broke my foot." Jack looked up, out of fear and standing in front of a curtain of red beads on string was a freckled red-head girl wearing a biker jacket holding either a glock or a pistol but he didn't know that much about guns. In high school, she always smelled of red varon brand incense. Heck, she would have a container of incense blowing off smoke while she was reading in the parking lot waiting for her parents' car. "Lisa...? Lisa Walkerman? I-" Lisa stood up from where she was leaning and walked over to them menacingly. Jack looked at Harv, but Harv was already watching the thugs that he could see behind the window-posters. "You know, we used to hang out, like, all the time. But I, unlike my brother, aspired to be a soccer star. But you took that from me." She pointed her gun at them and smiled sweetly, like she was just told a funny joke.
