Realistic or Modern Family Ties

Kathleen didn't even get a chance to move further down the stairs before Eva spoke to her. She simply lingered for several moments, cowering against the wall, seemingly surprised yet again by the offer of food. Eva opened her mouth to speak again when a loud rumble came from the TV, and Hugo let out a frustrated groan as he tossed the controller down on the couch, the cartoon characters of Cuphead dancing across the screen and laughing mockingly. The boy flopped back on the couch with an exasperated sigh.

Kat, on the other hand, froze, and then bolted back up the stairs, a high pitched "no," escaping her lips. Eva and Kennedy turned to look at each other. Kennedy took a small step forward, only stopping to look back at the stove. Eva gently reached out to take her arm. "Go on," Eva assured gently. "I can finish cooking. You go check on her." Eva let out a small sigh, her gaze still fixed the staircase. Kennedy headed past her and up the steps, glancing around the hallway in search of Kat.

A door slammed somewhere nearby, and Kennedy jumped in surprise. "Kat?" she called, slowly taking a few steps forward. She noticed the girl's bedroom door was opened and peeked around the corner. "Kat?" she called again. She caught sight of the closet. It was closed, and she could hear the sound of whimpering from inside. Kennedy let out a small sigh and approached the closet. "Kat," she called softly. "What's wrong?"

Kat was hunkered well into the closet as her panic took over after hearing what had seemed like the crack of thunder. Caught back in those frightening moments as a child being taken from her mother. Ever since that night all those years ago, she had hated storms and they'd never ceased to rattle her. Nor cause her the most trouble when it came to her placement. It was always the same for Kat, trapped in those moments, wetting the bed, and then getting punished for it. Clapping hands over her ears to try and make it stop....make the thunder go away and for the flashbacks to cease. Recalling the first night she was ever struck for something beyond her control when she was just five years old. The first time she learned to know fear and pain as she lay there huddled in the closet. Tears streaming down her face as she started rocking in her hiding spot. Ignoring the familiar scent of urine or even the pain in her back as she seemed caught in a tornado of nightmarish flashbacks. Trying her hardest to make it stop unaware of the conversation going on downstairs.

She wasn't even aware that anyone was looking for her as she hid in the closet. Scared, hurting and panicked knowing that she was probably in big trouble. Hating herself for being so weak and likely ruining yet another chance at her forever home. Only to hear footsteps step into her room as she shifted back against the wall, though the whimpering persisted. This was it. She was done, for now, she was so certain of it as she only seemed to rock that much more. Well aware that she was probably hurting herself being in there with her fresh injuries and that she might be ruining the closet. It was instinctual after so many repeat performances that never got any easier. Seeing her mother laying dead as she had come to learn later on. Drug overdose the social worker had said as she tried to shut her eyes a little more. 'Why couldn't she block it out?' she thought to herself as the flashes of the night intermingled with the beginning of her problems. The night she was slapped for wetting the bed and soiling good sheets that cost good money.

She hardly even heard her name being called as she seemed to crumble in on herself. Being taken from her crib by an unknown woman as she stared at the lifeless body of her mother. Being forced into homes she didn't even want to be in, in the first place. All Kat had ever wanted was a real home, someone to call her family and it never happened. Eventually forcing her to accept that maybe she just wasn't deserving of one. That maybe there was something wrong with her that made these awful things happen to her. Once again not hearing her name being called as someone walked into her room. Nor the footsteps that moved towards her hiding place, but she did hear that last call. Which seemed to disconnect her from whatever horrors she was facing. The only thing that ever normally did because it was rarely ever heard. Hearing a soft concerned voice asking her what's wrong making her stiffen up as she only seemed to panic a little more. Starting a broken record rendition of 'I'm sorry...and I'll be good...and don't hurt me' over and over again getting faster and more panicked as the rocking started up again.

Kennedy could smell the urine, but that was the furthest thing from her mind in the moment. She was only concerned about Kat. The girl didn't give a direct response, but just from the sound of her breathing Kennedy knew Kat had begun to panic. She had begun a repeated loop of apologies. of begging Kennedy not to hurt her, almost a mirror of Hugo's break from the previous night. Even though it wasn't Hugo this time, her heart still crumbled, throbbing with a dull ache. She reached out toward the doorknob, hesitating for a few seconds before grasping the knob and slowly turning it.

She had known, of course, what she would see upon opening the door. Of course she had. It was always the same thing, no matter who it might be. A crumpled shape, stiff and petrified curled up against the wall. Kennedy's gaze settled on the girl, and she dropped slowly down onto her knees. "Hey, hey, hey," she murmured gently. "It's me. Don't be sorry. You have nothing to be sorry for." She reached out and gently rested her hand on Kat's shoulder. "Look at me," she prompted, her voice soft, eyes flickering with worry as she spoke.

"You haven't done anything wrong," Kennedy assured, her voice firm but gentle. "You don't have anything to be sorry for. I'm not going to hurt you, I promise."

Her voice was weak and quiet from years of prolonged silence under the belief that a silent child was a good child. Even so, it did not stop the repeated phrases from spilling out of her mouth. The only time her tongue seemed to loosen up altogether was when she panicked or during a nightmare. Not necessarily even realizing where she was right now or who she was with. Caught up in this panic attack just as bad if not worse than the one she'd gotten yesterday. Well aware, that the words didn't make sense, but they were words she had known all her life. Not even any of the social workers except for Andrew had managed to make much of a connection with Kathleen. A few had even considered her a lost cause with how broken Kat had become. Not that the homes she was thrown into time and time again did any good for her. Unfortunately, Andrew had been unable to be there for her in the last few homes because of a family emergency. Leaving another social worker to pick up her case who did not bother to make a connection with her. Not that any of that mattered right now as she got lost in the fallout of a mother's choice to put drugs before her daughter.

Flinching back hard as she kept her eyes closed lifting her hands up to uselessly try to protect herself from the hits. She knew it never did any good, but it didn't stop her from trying to protect herself. They were wrong...there was something wrong with her. Why would this home have been any different than the last? Ignoring the very small childlike voice that suggested they were worth trusting. Still hyperventilating as she pressed as much as she could against the wall of the closet not that there was anywhere for her to go. The closet only just barely fit her so there wasn't much room to hide in. Yelping slightly as the words sped up hearing the door to the closet open. Light shining through the one pitch-black closet now as some of the sleeves slid away from her arms. Revealing healing bruises though none so sharp as the healing restraint scars on her wrists. If she had opened her eyes, there would have been black dots dancing across her vision.

Shying away from the light and the shadow that gently and carefully knelt before her hiding place. If she had only focused, she might have noticed the concerned face of her guardian, but she did not. Too far gone for that at the moment as the words continued to spring robotically from her lips. Well versed in these words and phrases she had picked up in her years that no child had to hear. The rocking had stopped but Kat still had her eyes shut and hands help out to defend herself. Only for her words to be cut off by a soothing voice trying to shush her gently. Breaking her rambling thoughts as it spoke insisting that it was alright and she had nothing to be sorry for. Just about jumping out of her skin with a violent flinch driving her back hard into the closet as a hand touched her shoulder. If she had paid more attention, she'd have noticed how gentle it was in contrast to anything before it. Only to stop speaking completely when she heard the voice direct her to look at the speaker.

At first, wanting not to do that, but it was a direct order and she knew better than to disobey. Vaguely aware that no punches were being thrown her way. Her arms not being grabbed or broken to get at her easier. It was with great reluctance that she opened her eyes, breathing still ragged and body shaking to regard who was speaking. Recognizing now that the sound of thunder was gone and that they were alone. She had almost forgotten how she had gotten here in the first place seeing something in her face she couldn't understand. Her body was still a mess and she could feel the blood starting down her back again as she focused on Kennedy now. Glancing nervously around now as she faced the fact she was trapped here. It seemed to disconnect her though, dropping her head hearing that voice that meant paying attention. Kennedy told her that she hadn't done anything wrong and that she wasn't going to be hurt for any of this. Was that really true? It....couldn't be...could it? But then Kennedy hadn't hit her the other time either.

"Why won't you just hit me or yell at me already and get it over with? I don't like these games...I don't know these games....just punish me already...I'll be good....I'll....I'll do all the chores...and you don't have to feed me except bread," replied Kathleen softly as she looked away from Kennedy. Her body still trembling but she was out of the panic attack at least. Starring at her knees that she drew up to her chest now as more tears slid down her face.

Kennedy let out a long sigh, leaning back against the door frame. “Honey,” she started gently. “Nobody is playing a game with you. You haven’t done anything to warrant being punished, and even if you had I still wouldn’t hit you. None of us would. We wouldn’t yell at you either.” She gently reached out to take the girl’s hand in hers, giving it a gentle squeeze. Kat had turned her head away by now, but Kennedy continued anyway.

“And I’m certainly not only feeding you bread and water. I might ask for help with a chore from time to time, but I do that with all the kids. You’ve spent nearly your entire life around people that didn’t always appreciate you. And that’s not fair. You deserve nice things and kindness and love and care, no matter how much you feel like you’ve messed up or how little you had before. I promise.”

“This entire house,” Kennedy began again, “Is filled with people who at one point or another, have had exactly the same feelings as you do now. And those feelings are perfectly okay to have. It’s okay to feel scared and sad. But that doesn’t mean you’re bad. No matter how often anyone’s told you you are. I know you don’t believe me. I know you’re scared. But you’re safe here.”

The moment the words left her lips, Kathleen knew she might come to regret them, but she was so frustrated. Not to mention, she was tired and really she couldn't bear to play this game any longer. She hated games when it concerned her and the possibility of being punished. At least if she got punished, she knew that was it until the next infraction. This just felt like torture never knowing when the final attack would come. It made it that much harder for her to adapt and it scared her. At least, at her old homes, she knew exactly when and why she was likely to be punished. Granted, some had too many rules for her to keep up with, but the first few had seemed to follow similar patterns. When she didn't have that to fall on anymore, it left her that much more unsure. Keeping her knees drawn up to her chest resting her cheek there as she kept her gaze from Kennedy. Flinching when she heard a sigh escaping the older woman's mouth as she heard her shifting some. Making her nervous, before she settled once more on what she assumed to be the closet door.

Hearing her speak in that same soft tone she had used before when Kat had her first panic attack. The one that sounded like something her imaginary family might say to her. The tone she had heard many parents use when she was just lucky enough to be let out of the house. One family not trusting her to be alone so occasionally she got to do things with discretion. Pulled from her thoughts by Kennedy continuing to speak telling her nobody was playing a trick. Causing her to blink in confusion surprised by this as she insisted she'd done nothing to warrant such a thing. That even if she had, it still wouldn't make her hit her as Kat curled up a little more against the closet. Listening as she carried on saying that nobody was going to hit her or yell at her here. Catching something in her peripheral which turned out to be Kennedy's hand reaching for her own making her yelp. Flashes of ropes coming immediately to her mind as she pulled her hands out of reach. Her breathing picking up again as she recoiled from the grab for her hand. A belt unbuckling....the floral wall....the pain....unaware of anything else being said to her just then.

Anything spoke after her hand being touched was lost on Kat as a voice told her to run. Within seconds, Kat had pulled herself from the closet and was out the door of her bedroom. Fleeing in absolute fright as she flew down the stairs not thinking of anything but getting away. Despite her injuries, she was surprisingly fast as thankfully the front door was unlocked managing to wrench it open...forgetting shoes or anything else in her desperate plea to getaway. Running at her top speed out the door and out of the house as she went into a blind run. Barely aware of anything or her own surroundings as she fled in complete terror. 'Have to get away...have to get away...they'll hurt you....' the mantra repeated in her head as she moved. Barely aware of the cars moving out of her way to avoid her. Just about being hit by a few of them though she managed to avoid it until one driver managed to hit Kat from the side. Thankfully, they hadn't been going very fast..just distracted by his wife as a couple immediately hurried over to check on Kat having seen the whole thing. Hearing one of them call 911 as a man tried to check on Kat.

Kennedy regretted touching Kat the moment she had done it. It had been almost automatic, something she had hardly even realized she was doin. But it had been done, and something intense and primal flared up within the child in front of her. Kat bolted. Out of the closet, out of the room, down the stairs into the kitchen. Kennedy shot to her feet and instinctively dashed after her. There was no telling where she was heading, and the closer behind Kennedy followed her, the less likely it was she'd be hurt. And then she heard the door open and slam shut again.

Eva had seen the girl come flying down the stairs, but had had little to no time to react before she was out the door. Eva shoved the pan on the stove back from her, letting out a small yelp as she immediately burnt herself. The kids were on the couch still, watching wide-eyed, and Jupiter scrambled to their feet, and Eva ran past them and out the door, calling a quick, "Stay here," over her shoulder before running after Kat out the door. She stopped for a moment, frozen in horror at the scene before her before snapping out of it and continuing to chase the clearly petrified child.

The world seemed to slow, Eva seeing the events before her in choppy frames instead of fluidly. Kat running into the street. Kat dodging cars as Eva bolted forward in an attempt to pull her back to the safety of the sidewalk. A car hitting her from the side. Maybe just barely. Maybe not hard, only enough to knock her down, but to Eva it might as well have sent her flying across the road. "Kathleen!" Eva screamed, terror evident in her voice. She ran to the girl's side and knelt down, only vaguely aware of Kennedy following just behind her. "Is she okay?" Kennedy asked.

"I'm so sorry I didn't...she came out of nowhere," insisted the man that hit the young girl with his car.

"Well you're lucky you weren't going any faster," replied a man hotly.

Moving to kneel over Kat who was just fading in and out of consciousness. The man trying to keep her awake as much as he could glad for his wife's quick thinking to call the police. Ignoring the man as he took in the sight of the young girl. Frowning when he saw abrasions on her wrists, no shoes scrapes from being hit by the oncoming car obviously fleeing from something. He just so happened to be an off-duty doctor as he took in the sight of the young girl with worry beyond being hit. Only for Kat to panic as she tried to push the man away clearly very frightened as the man tried to soothe the girl. Turning her head hearing a scream as he looked over to see two women racing over. Looking from the young girl to the possible parents just as Kat went unconscious once more. Worried about how light the child was and possible concussion as one of the women came to kneel beside him.

'She's in pretty rough shape. I'm a doctor at the local clinic off. I called 911 just to be certain....possible concussion...few scraps. Hard to know beyond that out here," murmured the doctor with concern.

Kat laying there unmoving though she was breathing at least. That had to be a good sign at least as he eyed the clearly distraught parents. However, his main concern was the young girl as he looked her over pulling up her sleeves hearing little whimpers as he tried to soothe her best that he could. So help him if he found out who had done this as she saw further bruises up her arms freshly healing. Relying on his skills as he checked her wrists that felt as though they had been broken and rehealed a few times at least. Someone had definitely put this girl through the wringer as he felt blood beneath his fingers. Shifting her gently to see her back peeling it back to his horror. Freshly healing wounds there, including fresh ones from being hit, but even he could see the belt-like marks along her back. Making sure to shield her from the growing crowd as the man that had hit her, tried to apologize to the women. Turning his head hearing an ambulance as he explained what he had noted of the girl's state. The medics thanking him as they looked to Kennedy and Eva offering one of them a lift to the hospital as the doctor watched them load her on a stretcher and into the bus.

Kennedy flinched as she watched Kat shove away the man that was trying to check on her, and then faded from consciousness, They'd only had her not even a full day, and already she was hurt. And it was Kennedy's fault. Maybe she should have just left Kat alone. She certainly wouldn't be lying in the street right now if they had. Kennedy gazed down at the girl, her eyes crackling with a mixture of guilt and vexation. Had Kat turned out just fine, Kennedy might have scolded her, angrily telling her that she couldn't just run straight out of the house like that, that if she wanted to get away from them, all she had to do was tell them. But she couldn't do that now. So she simply stood there, her gaze dark with worry as the man kneeling beside Eva stood up and spoke.

Eva let out a long, slow exhale. Hospital time again. She was sure Kat would be extraordinarily miserable when she woke up there. Hugo always was. They'd made what felt like thousands of hospital trips for Hugo alone by now, and he was there so often that several of the staff knew all of them by name. Snapping from her thoughts again as the man offered one of them a ride to the hospital. Eva and Kennedy looked at one another for a moment, silently debating who should go, before Kennedy gently placed a hand on Eva's arm.

"You should go," Kennedy told her. "I'll clean up the kitchen and let the kids know what happened. Besides, you're...better at these things than I am. And I'm the one who scared her in the first place. She might prefer to see you when she wakes up again. I'll meet you there." Eva had always been the softer one. Gentler. Occasionally not the best in a crisis, but probably best for this one. Where Kennedy crackled with frustration, Eva burst into tears of worry. Eva nodded after a moment, and followed the paramedics into the ambulance.

The paramedic gave the pair a sympathetic glance though he knew he needed to get the young girl to the hospital. Eventually, see one of the women step forward and climb in as they closed the doors. Telling his partner to go as they drove away from the scene with Kat laying there unmoving in the stretcher. Looking back at the anxious mother as he looked down at the child in his care now. Checking her vitals every so often as he tried to start her on IVs. Feeling bad when the girl tried to move away from his touch weakly as it was. Sighing gently noting the abrasion around her wrists as well, but he said nothing. Realizing that he probably didn't want to restrain her right now. Rolling up her shirt to check for any internal damage seeing truly how thing the girl was. He'd seen a lot on the job but it still broke his heart, either way, seeing a girl in such a state. Hearing her whimper a little as he debated giving her something, but he didn't want to risk it unless it was absolutely necessary.

Chancing another look at Eva as he continued to check Kat over, noticing a small cut on her forehead. Easily treated though there was still a worry of concussion and internal injuries that they couldn't see. Looking to her wrists hearing her whimper again as he tried to be thorough but gentle. Her wrist seemed sprained at the minimum and there was likely to be some bruising. His concern then came to the blood he hadn't noticed before as he gently encouraged the limp form on her side. Wincing at the marks that littered the girl's back making him think they might want a full workup on her regardless. Glancing occasionally at the woman though she genuinely seemed upset by the girl's incident. She looked a mess and without her partner making him feel bad for them who clearly seemed to love her making him wonder what had happened. Not looking to point fingers as this wasn't his job occasionally talking to Kathleen about mostly nothing. Thinking it might keep her calm as he tried to clean out her wounds with what limited supplies he had.

Kat none the wiser as they made the journey to the nearest hospital with the medic working on her injuries. Documenting what he had seen as he tried to assure Eva that her daughter would be alright. Pulled from his thoughts when they came to a stop and his partner said they had arrived and were greeted by a doctor in a white coat as they wheeled her out. Telling the group about the hit from the car and injuries she had likely sustained. A nurse taking Eva to a nearby waiting room until they could be certain of Kathleen's state.

*********************

It was a little while later that the doctor finally came to collect Eva from the nervous wait. He had done a thorough exam after it was made clear that she had been a foster child taken in Eva. Truthfully, the doctor was angry at the lack of care anyone up until now had given this child. His hand with the girl's folder while Kat lay sleeping in a bed to recover. Thankfully, her injuries were all minor with the worse a minor concussion as they had feared. She was lucky though and was currently on fluids as well as nutrients after he felt she was far too thin for his liking. All of which he wanted to discuss with the family assuring them that Kathleen was fine and resting though she had yet to wake up. A nurse was currently keeping tabs on her as the doctor had the task of telling the family his findings. Gesturing for them to follow figuring they would want to see their daughter as he escorted them away. Opening the door to Kathleen's room allowing the family inside. It was fairly quiet aside from the sounds of the monitors going off every few seconds. Kat laying with her head to the side, a few gauze strips along the wound but it wasn't too deep.

"You recently took Kat from a foster agency? Is that correct?" asked the doctor looking at the notes.

Eva's time in the waiting room felt like eons. Kennedy joined her after some time, along with Jupiter and Ronan. Hugo had refused to set foot in the hospital, which Kennedy supposed was fair enough, given that even the tiniest cold or bug usually landed him in the hospital hooked up to a bunch of tubes. She suspected he didnt want to be there any more than absolutely necessary. She had tasked him with cleaning up the kitchen in their absence, knowing he would spiral downward into panic if not kept busy.

Eventually, the doctor came to collect them. He led them into the room, and Eva's gaze settled on Kat as he spoke to her. The girl's eyes were still closed, and Eva let out a shaky sigh at the sight before sitting down and pressing herself as closely to Kennedy as she could. Jupiter and Ronan settled nearby, careful to keep out of the way of the staff. Ronan's gaze was serious, fixed on Kat as he settled beside Jupiter. He had grown used to hospital trips, due to his brother's frequent trips, but this was less familiar to him. He knew what to expect from Hugo, most of the time. He had no idea what to expect from Kat, and it worried him.

Kennedy nodded as the doctor spoke to them. "Yes," she said. "We only got her yesterday. She hasn't eaten much of anything since. We offered her spaghetti last night and she refused anything apart from bread and water. Eva cleaned her back once last night, but she doesn't want us to touch her much, if at all. She's not very comfortable with us yet. Part of her running off was my fault." Kennedy leaned back in her chair slightly, feeling Eva give her shoulder a gentle squeeze. "Something scared her and she ran off and hid. I tried to calm her down and grabbed her hand and it startled her. So she bolted."

The doctor kept his distance seeing the family that recently taken in the clearly traumatized girl. Sighing heavily as he hated these cases, but they were also a specialty of his. Having been an abuse victim himself he had taken these on personally as he studied the girl's charts grimly. Kat hooked up to a few bags some for nutrients, other fluids. It would definitely be a hard road ahead for her regardless of her stay here. Yet, he could see clear concern on the faces of the parents and two siblings that had been brought into the room as well. His own eyes glancing at the girl as she shifted a little but didn't wake up. Probably for the best as he did not want to restrain her or sedate her by any means. Not to mention, he was fairly certain the girl was not getting proper sleep thus far. Any sleep she got now would be crucial he suspected as he looked at the clearly worried family. He could only hope with counseling and a loving family she might be able to see past it all one day.

Starting with the basic question as protocol dictated knowing if she was not being cared for, he needed to get people involved. As it was though from the talk with a few more long term staff the two women were well known here. Particularly when it came to their youngest Hugo and their desire for taking in abused and neglected kids. Having heard from a nurse who'd spoken to Eva about the subject while they worked on her. He just could tell things about people and these women genuinely seemed concern with their daughter's wellbeing. Everyone was clearly upset by what had happened as he ran a hand over his face moving to speak to the couple alone not wishing to have the two children involved. Turning his head when one of the women spoke up telling him that he was correct and had only just recently obtained her. Mentioning that she hadn't eaten much the earlier day which he took note of though he sighed when the other tried to blame themselves.

"These things take time and from my findings....she's lucky to have you both. I mean if it were easy I'm sure there would be less returned foster kids. Don't be so hard on yourselves. You've clearly done something right by them," he offered kindly to the woman gesturing to both Jupiter and Ronan. He definitely knew what it was to be on the receiving end as he sighed heavily not sure how to ease them into this conversation.

"Aside from the scraps, mild concussion and sprained wrists...she's fairly lucky I would say from the car. It's her other injuries that I'm concerned about. I was obligated to do a full exam of her, standard procedure. She's...been through a lot from what I can tell. Multiple healed fractures of the wrists, arms, and ribs. Belt lashes in various stages of healing, some as new as I guess a little less than a week, but the older ones date back much further. Abrasions on her wrists and ankles suggesting she was restrained at some point...likely with ropes...probably why she didn't want you touching her hands. She's definitely underweight and I'd admit I'd be surprised if she could tolerate something so heavy. I might suggest some blander meal for the time being...there were also signs of possible sexual assault in my findings. Nothing we can't treat but getting her to cooperate and getting both mind and body to heal will be difficult. I have a friend that might be able to see about counseling her as well...I can also see about getting her a prescription for some minor sedatives," replied the doctor with a sad sigh as he looked to the two women. Knowing this was a lot to take in but it was in both their best interest and Kathleen. Keeping his voice quiet out of respect for the sleeping child and the pair's other kids.

"Do either of you have any questions. I'll probably take my leave otherwise.....and will come back when she wakes. A few more things I wish to run but then you may take her home if everything checks out. She'll need some rest for the concussion but she's a tough girl," he said trying to ease the situation as he glanced back at the sleeping girl seeing the blankets slid down her and moving to gently ease them over her now.

Glancing back at Jupiter and Ronan one last time, Eva followed the doctor out into the hall. A small, appreciative smile crossed her face for a moment as he said that Kat--and their other children--were lucky to have them. "Thank you," she murmured softly. "We try." She looked back towards the hospital room. "And we'll keep trying with Kathleen as well." They had faced their fair share of challenges already with their children, and they were more than prepared to move at as slow a pace as Kat needed them to.

And then the doctor went on to describe the injuries. Some they'd known about, like the ones on her back, and other things they hadn't been told about, like healed fractures and being restrained with ropes. He then suggested blander foods, counseling, and medication, and the pair nodded in understanding. All of their children had needed those things at one point or another. Hugo was still medicated relatively heavily, both with his psychiatric medicines and physical treatments.

Kennedy stiffened at the mention of possible sexual assault, her jaw clenching and unclenching as she listened to the doctor continue speaking. Unlike the rest of her family, she was the only one to have—unfortunately—experienced it. With all that had already happened to Kat, it was just one more thing she didn’t deserve. Kennedy’s gaze settled on Kat once more, and she failed to realize just how tense she had become until Eva gave her a gentle nudge. Kennedy gave a shaky exhale and then shook her head when the doctor asked if they had any questions. "No," she said, her eyes still fixed on Kat in the bed from outside the door. "Thank you."

He watched them for several minutes as he went on to explain about the exam he had given her while she was out. Figuring it would be less taxing on the young girl rather than while she was awake. They seemed understanding and perhaps better prepared to deal with what Kathleen had dealt with. Certainly, they seemed more than up for the task standing there outside Kat's door. Seeing them clearly digesting all that he'd told them as he gave them a sympathetic look. Mindful that they may have to restrain her if she fought against the IV and such. He was troubled by the signs of sexual abuse, but there wasn't much he could do unless Kat brought it up herself. Pulled from his thoughts by them shaking their heads insisting they had no questions for the time being. Nodding his head as he gave the sleeping girl in the room one more glance.

"Well, I'll let you return back to your daughter, then. Don't hesitate to have a nurse get me. Just ask for Jack. They'll know who I am. Ladies," replied the doctor kindly as he nodded his head before taking his leave to see to another of his patients.

Leaving both Eva and Kennedy to return to their children as he thought about the young girl in that bed and the horrors she'd been through. She had a long road ahead of her and he was determined to do his part in helping her out. Starting with getting some mild sedatives and counseling knowing a friend of his that while retired, would be more than willing to take her on. Not to mention they had worked on many cases over the years since he's worked at this hospital. Taking a deep breath as he opened the door to greet an elderly woman who refused to take her medication and kept ending up here.

*************

It was a little while later that Kathleen slowly started showing signs of waking up from being hit. She ached everywhere but oddly enough her back felt loads better than it had in the longest time. She was also aware of the fact that she was laying in something really soft. It was only when she heard the sounds of something beeping that she recognized that she was in a hospital. Her green eyes slowly opening with a minor groan wanting to roll over, but for the prick of something in her arms. Blinking wide awake now as she tried to sit up but the pain made it almost impossible. Forcing herself to admit she needed to lay back down once more as she wondered what had happened. Vaguely recalling that she had left the house but everything else was foggy at best. More aware now of the needle in her arm making her start to panic. What was going on? Where was Kennedy...Eva... She didn't really trust them, but they were supposed to be her family.

Feeling tears sliding down her face now thinking they had abandoned her as she tried to look around. The pain in her head not helping and the meds were making her groggy. Even if she wanted to fight or go into a panic, she couldn't seem to force it. Her lips trembling as she didn't initially see either of her mother's. Already her hand was trying to pull at the iv just noticing the small brace on her wrist. Whimpering a little as she tried to make sense of what was going on. Had she already been abandoned? Maybe they decided that she was too much trouble after all. More hot tears sliding down her face as she tried to get the needle out of her arm. A weak attempt at best since her hand was braced to protect her sprained wrist and she was aching all over from being hit. Only knowing she didn't want to go back to the foster system again. She would refuse if she had to.

The doctor left them alone then, and the pair slipped quietly back into the room. Jupiter and Ronan looked up expectantly, still huddled together in the corner of the room. Eventually, it was Eva who spoke. "She'll be all right," she promised them. "Eventually."

The group remained relatively quiet for a the next little while, perking up slightly every time Kat shifted slightly, and then reluctantly settling back down upon realizing she wasn't awake. Eventually though, an attempt to roll over turned into her struggling to sit up. "Kat!" Ronan chirped, shrinking back down almost immediately upon realizing his voice had come significantly louder than he meant it to. Jupiter smirked beside him, reaching out to mess with the boy's hair a little before offering Kat a smile.
"Good morning, Sleeping Beauty," they said. The words were playful, teasing, but there was clear and evident relief in Jupiter's voice.

Eva sprang forward as Kat struggled to sit up, Kennedy quickly following after her. "Kat!" Eva exclaimed, darting to her daughter's side. "It's all right. I'm here; you're safe. What happened? We--" she stopped as Kennedy gently nudged past her, having noticed Kat fiddling with the needle in her arm.

"Hey, hey," Kennedy started, reaching out to stop Kat before quickly pulling her hand back. "Just...just leave that where it is for now. You're not in trouble." She gave a relieved sigh, her gaze soft and concerned. "Don't scare me like that again. If you want to be left alone for a while you can just say so. There are plenty of places in the house you can go if you need to. Just...just keep it to inside the house for now, maybe?" She leaned back against the wall as she spoke, resting her forehead in her hand before looking back up to Kat. "You cannot be running off into the street anymore." Kennedy told her, her voice becoming more stern. "Like, ever. You already got hit once, and you're very, very lucky the car wasn't going any faster." Another sigh. "I'm glad you're okay, Kat. But for the love of god, please don't run out in front of anymore cars."

It was the sound of one of her siblings making her jump slighting surprised that she wasn't alone. Maybe they hadn't abandoned her as she thought. Only just realizing two of them were here now. A brief flicker of relief coming over her face by Jupiter's response opening her mouth to ask where Kennedy or Eva was. Not picking up on the subtle joking play about having slept for so long but really only a few hours. Still, it was more than she was used to as she glanced down realizing she was in a bed and changed. Oh no, what if she was in trouble for being here? Still a little foggy on the details just as she heard Eva's voice as she was struggling to get out of the bed. Worried she might not be allowed to be in here as Eva tried to soothe her worried nerves best she could. A bit of momentary relief registered, surprisingly calm but then the drugs were still in her system or she undoubtedly would have panicked more. It was a low dose, too risky because of her weight, but it seemed to keep her from a full-blown panic attack. Even still she was nervous and uncertain about what was going on.

Dropping her head not that she could really get herself out of bed with the IV in. Even then every movement seemed to be a tad more difficult than normal. Looking to Eva from where she lay as she heard her try to quiet her down. Telling her that she was there...that she was safe before asking her what happened. Frowning a little as she tried to concentrate but all she remembered was having to run. Then everything went dark just as Kennedy moved to stop her from pulling out the needle. A small flinch was her only indication of discomfort aside from just barely moving her hand out of reach. Proving much more tiresome with whatever they'd given her. Hearing Kennedy's voice telling her to leave the needle assuring her she wasn't in trouble. At first reluctant to obey, but she gave up even if she really wanted it out. Even that got more difficult as she gave up and just let her hands fall to the side. Noticing bandages on her other wrist yet she could still move all her limbs.

The only good thing she supposed about being here as she tried to keep her focus on her mother. Caught a little off guard when Kennedy told her about worrying them both like that. Something she'd never really heard come from an adult before. Most of them didn't give a damn about what had happened to her after she was placed in their care. One hadn't even noticed when she had been on the streets for five days until an officer found her rummaging through garbage for scraps. Dropping her gaze although a small part of her felt a little warm at having worried them. Because at least it meant that they cared even if she would probably be punished for it. Looking to the nice bed that she'd been given as a few more tears slid down her face. Not sure why she had even deserved this after how bad she'd been. She really didn't mean to scare them though it seemed she had anyways. Hearing Kennedy mention there were plenty of places for her to go if she needed space. But that leaving the house was off-limits now.

Keeping her gaze down to study the nice soft warm sheets that the doctor had insisted upon. It certainly made sleep far more tempting and she was still feeling really groggy. Wincing when Kennedy's voice became much more stern telling her no more running in the streets. That she'd been extremely lucky and all but begging her not to. Such an odd sight for Kathleen as she saw how upset Kennedy was over this. Nodding her head miserably knowing when she was being scolded as she tried to itch at the Iv again. Pouting as she wanted to have it out, but she wasn't allowed to do so. More tears sliding down her face a mix of frustration and sadness in her face as she knew she was a bad kid.

"You gonna give me away now? I...I didn't mean...nobody care before. I'm sorry I'm so bad. Just please no give me away. I'll do better..don't leave me here. Please....I want....I want.." replied Kat's small shy voice as it started fading with her wanting to return to sleep. Yet, not willing to do so not knowing her fate seeming to fight the meds now which didn't help anything.

Kennedy gave Kat a gentle smile as the child lowered her head in shame. She had scolded Kat, yes, but she was far more worried about her than she was angry at her for running off. Kat began to fidget, and again Kennedy spoke. “It’ll come out soon,” she promised about the IV. But right now you have to leave it where it is so you can get better.” The girl flinched a tiny bit, but that was about all she could do before tears began to stream down her face. “Kat...” Kennedy murmured softly. She wanted so badly to reach out and hug the girl, but after the response to being touched earlier, she didn’t dare try.

Eva felt as though someone had punched her straight in the chest, and her heart cracked in half for what felt like the millionth time in the past day as she listened to Kat begin to beg. “No one is getting rid of you, honey,” she promised, ignoring the slight crack in her own voice. “You’re not bad. Just scared. There’s a difference. You’re not in trouble, but you definitely scared us pretty bad. We won’t leave you here. You’re pretty beaten up, but once the doctor finishes running all his tests and says it’s okay for you to go home, you’re coming right back home with us. I promise.”

Kat’s eyelids began to droop, but the girl seemed to be fighting to stay awake. “You can go back to sleep if you need to,” Eva assured gently. “We’ll be right here when you wake up again.” She hesitated for a moment, and then leaned down to gently kiss Kat on the forehead.

She really wasn't used to all this attention and she didn't know whether she liked it or not. In her constant state of panic, she was unable to see how nice Kennedy and Eva were. Due to the mild sedative and drugs, she was forced to reflect if nothing else on her days there. It was still so different from what she was used to, but it wasn't bad. Not all of it at least as she could see how worried her two mothers were over this. Never thought anyone would care that she had been hit by a car. Certainly, none of the other homes had cared or if they did, it stopped soon after they saw what a troubled girl she was. Yet, neither of them had been very hard on her at all. They'd been very good to her not even making her do chores or getting mad when she acted out or didn't eat their food. Kennedy then told her once more to stop fiddling with the IV which she did reluctantly. Hearing her insist that it would come on soon, but it would help her feel better. She didn't know about that, but she was too groggy to fight it.

Kennedy speaking her name as she cried only made her start crying, even more, wanting nothing more than to hear her own name. She hardly ever heard her name unless it was 'freak' or 'that girl' or even just plain 'girl'. The only one that had called her by name was the social services and occasional doctor. Hesitantly looking over at her mother seeing that she looked really upset and sad too making her feel bad. Even though she was being scolded, it seemed like she still loved her at least. Maybe this wouldn't be as bad as she had initially thought it might be. But then, of course, she had to open her mouth and all but beg them not to give her back. Promising them that she'd be good and do anything they asked if they only not leave her here. Her rambling only stopping when Eva broke the silence making her turn to look at her. Hearing her assure her that nobody was going to leave her. Promising her this at least and was that a small voice crack? She dropped her gaze again as it felt difficult to lift her head too long.

Listening as she said that she wasn't bad, just frightened and that there was a difference. Insisting again that she wasn't in trouble, despite scaring them both a good deal making her frown. She really hadn't meant to do that....she just had to getaway. Still not sure of much of anything after leaving the house as it was still foggy at best. Reassuring her again that she wasn't going to be left here and would come home with them soon as she was allowed to. Nodding her head gently as she could feel herself being dragged down to sleep by the medication and pain. Hearing Eva telling her that it was okay for her to go back to sleep. Something about the warm covers and soft bed made it easy enough to do so. Surprised when she felt a gentle brush of something against her sore head that felt really nice. Almost instinctually leaning into the touch as her eyes slowly closed once more. Letting sleep take her once more just as a nurse came in to change the Iv bag that had been steadily draining. Giving the family a gentle smile as she took her leave after ensuring things were alright.

It would a few more times that Kat woke looking for either Kennedy or Eva before drifting back to sleep once more. But by 2, she was much more awake and lucid this time as her green eyes slowly opened. Trying yet again to roll over but for the Iv tubes that were getting much more frustrating. The bags under her eyes were still there, but she had definitely gotten some well-deserved sleep. A groggy half-waken statement of 'mom' coming from her lips as she opened her eyes and turned her head from where it was starring at the wall. The meds wearing off but they were still keeping her relatively calm as the doctor had wanted, preferring to use it against restraining the poor child right now even if that would have been better than meds. Shifting a little against the sheets that had fallen from her shoulders as she looked for her parents.

Time passed slowly again once Kat had fallen back asleep. Nurses drifted in and out at various intervals, most only greeting Eva and Kennedy with a quick nod of acknowledgement before tending to their work. Kat woke again a few times, mostly only for a few short moments, and was out again before either woman could tend to her. The sky--and the room--eventually both began to darken as the sun began to set, and Kennedy left briefly to take Jupiter and Ronan back home. She returned after a short time and settled back in beside Eva, who had begun to doze off in the chair.

Kennedy rested her head on Eva's shoulder, watching the still sleeping Kat. She hadn't panicked when Kennedy had scolded her, and had seemed to calm some once Eva assured her they had no plans to give her away. She was sure some of it had to do with the amount of sedatives pumping through the girl's system, but maybe, just maybe, Kat was finally beginning to understand that they did care for her after all. That they really did want her as part of their family.

They wound up sleeping in shifts. Or rather, they had tried to. Neither one of them was managing much rest, and when one of them did manage to nod off, the other followed shortly after. They had both fallen asleep again this time, Eva sprawled out across the chair and Kennedy asleep beside her with her face buried in the crook of her wife's neck. So when Kat woke yet again, neither one of them realized it until the slurred call came from the girl's mouth. Eva blinked her eyes open, shifting in the chair to sit up. Kennedy let out a soft groan as Eva's movement woke her, and she too sat up, blinking as her blurry gaze focused on the newly awakened girl. "We're here," Kennedy assured gently. "How are you feeling?"

Kat was trying to sit up again a little more aware of what was going on including the Iv. Startling ever so slightly as she looked around the hospital room. Not seeing the sleeping woman near her bed as she focused on where she was. Her body still ached a good deal but she felt a little more rested than she had been. Her green eyes looking around nervously thinking maybe she truly was on her own again. Feeling a small tinge of upset thinking that she had been left on her own regardless. Only to hear a groan from the side followed by the shifting of chairs as her head snapped immediately to the side. Looking over as Eva slowly made her way over to her. Kennedy gently reassuring of this fact as Kat slowly took a breath of relief at that. She still didn't trust them, but they were better than being on her own altogether. Anything was better than being left at the hospital as she heard them asking how she was feeling. Swallowing thickly as her mouth was dry and she really wanted something for it. Mulling over their question of how she was feeling right now.

"A little better....still sore..'m thirsty too...if...if..if I'm allowed?" replied Kat as she rubbed her eyes with hands.

Pulled from her words by the gentle knock at the door of her hospital room making her flinch slightly. Trying to shift just that little closer towards where her parents were currently situated. Seeing a man carrying a tray and a black bear plushie with a sling around his arm. Tilting her head uneasily but the bear seemed to have caught her eyes as the man smiled making slow strides towards the group noting that the siblings had been brought home. Probably for the better as he wanted to try and gain Kat's trust to make this all easier as he came over with a charming smile.

"Ladies. Just on my way to get Kat something to eat when the darndest thing happened. This little bear came in with a sore shoulder, but he really needs someone to take care of him. I thought maybe after the scary day you might keep him?" replied Jack as he came to sit on a stool he then brought over as he looked over at the two mothers.

However, he wanted to focus on Kathleen right now as she seemed to be highly considering it. Looking as he took the bear off the tray and gently held it over to her in a way that reaching it would require her to touch him. Seeing the contemplation on her face as she debated whether or not to run the risk of reaching out. But it did look so cute and he was saying that it was hers as she chewed her bottom lip looking at her parents. The first time she had looked to them for a sign of whether she could do something or not. She knew she'd already disappointed them with running out on the street. The doctor seemed pleased that she was looking to them at least as he waited as patiently as he might need to be for her. Seeing the clear want in her eyes at the bear as he was sure she'd never been given something this nice.

Kat was silent for a moment. She swallowed, before telling them that she was still sore, but thirsty." Eva gave the girl a tired smile and got up from the chair, picking up the still cold cup of water she had brought back so recently. She had set it aside on a nearby table, where it had remained untouched until now. She had thought Kat might be thirsty when she finally woke up for real. She held out the cup to the girl now. "Of course you're allowed," she murmured gently. "Here. Did you sleep okay? You woke up a few times, but we weren't sure if you were actually awake or just drifting in and out."

Just as she finished speaking, a light knock sounded on the door and the doctor poked his head inside once more, carrying a stuffed bear under one of his arms. He sat down in front of Kat and extended the bear to her. If she wanted it, she would have to reach out and take it. The child stared at it for several moments, hesitating and fidgeting uncomfortably before looking over at Eva and Kennedy for encouragement. The doctor simply sat there and looked at her, calm and clearly ready to wait however long it took.

Kennedy offered an encouraging smile to Kat, who still appeared apprehensive. "Go on," Kennedy encouraged softly. "You can take it. It's all right." She wondered when the last time Kat had been given something like that was. She had her wolf of course, but it was old and somewhat ragged. And she'd been almost overwhelmed at the sight of her bedroom the day before. It had probably been ages, especially given that her past families had never been very kind to her.

Kat was appreciative as a small glass of water was brought over to her by Eva. Her eyes lighting up again the same way they had that first day. Her hands were eager to get a hold of the small cup. Forcing herself to sit up though it pained her a good deal to do so. Sore more than anything after being hit and having her back seen to as well. Luckily, she had been out during most of the exam at least which was undoubtedly for the best. Seeing the cup being extended in her direction as she hesitated a few moments. Then gently took the glass from her and started drinking it down. Enjoying the cool liquid as it ran down her throat making her sigh in contentment. Hearing Eva when she asked her if she had slept alright mentioning that she'd woken a few times, but it hadn't seemed like she'd been very awake for it. Nodding her head a little stiffly as she continued to drink her fill of the glass just as Jack walked in with the tray of food and stuffed bear. The one that she was currently eying with curiosity and desire but still hesitant to take it.

Turning to look at both her mothers silently asking if she could take the nice bear. Noticing how new and soft it looked which surprised her as she didn't think she deserved something like that. Seemingly waiting for permission despite her hands fighting the urge to grab it. Well aware that she'd have to move in proximity to him if she did so. Forcing her to confront her demons as he waited there unmoving as she looked back with frustration. Clearly wanting it, but uneasy about whether she'd get in trouble. It bothered Jack so much to see a child so conditioned by fear and pain. Yet, he had made great progress with all of them, even the ones that no longer needed him anymore. It warmed his heart and this would be no exception, though she would definitely be his trickiest. Pulled from his thoughts just like Kat when Kennedy spoke up encouraging her to take the bear. Seeing the small smile on her face as she then realized what that meant for her. Seeing the realization pass on her face as she looked from him to the bear before slowly leaning over the bed. Her movements were stiff and ready to pull back as she watched him carefully. Yet he did not move or do anything even looking slightly away which seemed to help as she took it in her arms.

The bear was really soft just as he'd looked like as she pulled it tightly to her chest. Jack seeming thrilled by the tiny progress as he watched her for a few tiny moments. Looking at the almost empty fluid and IV bags as he decided to take it upon himself to undo it. Seeing Kat flinch but he didn't stop but rather started talking to her about the little bear. Distracting her and telling her what he was doing having seen her wanting to fiddle with it again. They all hated them and he was satisfied to have gotten some nutrients into her.

"Let's see about getting this annoying thing out, hmm? Maybe you can think of a new name for him while you give him a big squeeze," replied Jack casually as Kat seemed to take well enough.

She still shifted away and flinched as he reluctantly touched her arm but his voice seemed to keep her from panicking too far. Not to mention the drugs were still in her system although he suspected it had everything to do with her getting the needle out. Seeing her hug that bear in a death grip as he gently removed the needle before gently applying a small bandage to the spot. Immediately releasing her hand as he smiled proudly at her seeing the recognition that it was out as she then looked to what else he had with him. Seeing him open the tray revealing what seemed to be scrambled eggs and some toast.

"For me?"

"Just for you, sweetheart. Eat as much as you can or want...hey hey...easy now...not too fast," he said as he saw her about to shovel it into her mouth. Knowing they all seemed to do so as Kat flinched immediately trying to move out of touch. Yet, he didn't grab her as he looked at her gently his hand over her plate for a moment. Seeing the sadness on Kat's face as she clearly didn't understand why she was being withheld her food.

"You can have it if you'll eat it slowly," he said not raising his voice yet he somehow made his point across. Kat nodding her head reluctantly watching him move his hand away once more. Slowly picking up the fork again though it irritated her sore hands as she hesitantly brought food to her mouth. Seeing the nod of approval as he turned away from her. Still keeping an eye on her knowing he didn't want to push his luck either. Although he was mindful that she could try choking it down again. He didn't like using food as a reward, but if it got her out of this...he would do it.

"I think Kat is well enough to go home once she finishes this. I have a prescription here for some mild sedatives for the first little while. It'll be daily for a few weeks...but then we'll start weaning her off them. Hopefully completely depending on how she progresses. I have a few sample packs to give you for now until you can get them. She may need a few days to recuperate from the concussion...and the drug will likely make her sleepy. I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing right now. I would try and get her back cleaned at least once a day...twice if she'll let you. I'll also have my friend give you a call for counseling and I'd like to take her on as a patient regularly. I've dealt with abused kids for a while..made good progress with many. I think I can- Kat....Kat easy with the eggs," he replied when he noticed her try to shovel another huge portion seeing her flinch and quickly stop.

"I'll get you the release papers for her now. You can give her a pill when you get home. I think she'd had enough for one day. Anything you need before I get the papers?" he said with a glance her way as he asked the parents. Looking back at the two mothers hoping that seemed satisfying to them both. Something about her made him want to do this as he saw her nibbling at the toast clearly seeing her enjoying herself when she thought nobody was paying attention.

Kat reached out and took the cup, her eyes lighting up with delight as she gulped the water down within seconds. After Kennedy's encouragement, she did slowly reach out to take the bear, a look of surprise crossing the girl's face as she pulled the toy to her chest, squeezing it tightly as Jack removed the IV. The girl flinched a little, and then relaxed again, eyes settling on the tray of food.

Once again, Kat appeared stunned, but eventually began to devour the food until the doctor advised her to slow it down. She ate similarly to Hugo, Kennedy had noticed. The boy too, gulped down his food as though he may never be fed again. She wondered if Kat might always behave in a similar manner. It wouldn't surprise her in the least bit.

"Nobody is going to take it away from you," Eva told the girl gently. "But if you keep eating that fast, you'll make yourself sick. Or you'll choke. Just try taking little bites, hm?" The doctor too, had noticed the way Kat was devouring her food, and once more gently told her to take it easy. He went over most of what he had told them earlier for a second time, and then said Kat would likely be fine to go home once she had finished eating.

Shaking her head when the man asked if they needed anything else, Eva spoke again. "We don't need anything else," she assured him. "Thank you." She looked back at Kat, who was still eating. "What do you say?" she asked her. "Ready to get out of here and go home so you can sleep off some sedatives?"

She didn't remember the last time she had such a nice meal aside from the burger and fries from the social worker on her drive to her new home. The eggs were divine and so was the toast she was currently nibbling. Slightly annoyed with each reprimand about taking it slow, but she knew better than to press it. Not wanting the man to take her food away or the bear. So she tried to reign herself back in as hard as it was while he talked over her towards Ava and Kennedy. Trying yet again to swallow it quicker upon hearing she might get to leave sooner. Only to be gently warned once again making her flinch a little. Eva telling her she may get sick or choke if she didn't which she did remember with the burger. Biting her lip as she reluctantly nodded her head looking down in shame as she tried to slow down her eating. Not seeing the small smile on Jack's face at her attempts to follow instructions. She clearly wanted to please them and that was both good and bad. Hopefully with time though, she might open up from her shell a little more.

Jack nodded his head when they said they didn't need anything, but thanked him regardless. Still watching Kat from the corner of his eye as he watched Eva interact with the young girl. Asking her if she wanted to get out of there as Kat nodded her head gingerly. Suspecting her head was still bothering her but some sleep and rest would do her some good he hoped. Slowly excusing himself from his chair after giving a once over to make sure he hadn't missed anything. The head wound wasn't bleeding and superficial at best and the sprain would heal in a few weeks too. Her back was a mess but if they could get that under control he would feel much better. The sedative seemed to keep her calm at least as he took his leave to get everything for their departure. Feeling good about how things went, but the real test would be once Kat came off the sedatives. Coming back a few minutes later just as Kat was picking clean the plate and the small amount of watered orange juice he'd gotten her.

"You did very well Kat. I think once your mothers sign the paperwork, we can get you out of here. Your clothes were a bit of a mess. So I got you some clothes that would fit from the gift shop," replied Jack to the surprise of Kathleen as she looked to him.

Seeing him handing over the folded clothes that looked quite comfy if a little big so she didn't irritate her back. They seemed more like pajamas but he didn't think she should have to change twice right now. Handing over the paperwork for them to sign as well as about four days' worth of the meds along with a prescription for them to fill. Telling them to give it to her in the morning and that if she had any serious complications to bring her back. Seeing Kat still hugging the bear in her arms as she tried to slowly pull herself from the bed. Shifting ever subtly in her direction prepared to catch her if she wasn't able to hold herself up. She was ginger about standing and seemed to wobble before finding a balance for herself. Moving the curtains just enough to give her privacy but not to close her off altogether. Giving them his card with his personal number too as well as his friend for counseling. Hearing Kat fumbling with getting changed but she seemed to manage alright. Looking back over when he heard steps moving in the direction and gently pulled it back revealing a freshly dressed young girl with some kid slippers for her feet.

"Well don't you look nice. You ready to go home?" he asked as he gently bent down to be eye level with her.

Seeing Kat still holding the bear nervously in her arms as she gave him a tiny twitch of a smile. A nod of her head as she looked down at the bear before reluctantly moving to reach over to give the bear back. Jack not really surprised by this as he looked at the bear and then back at Kat. Trying to decide how best to broach the subject with her. Instead, gently pushing the bear back into her arms ignoring the flinch as she stared in awe at him. The look of clear confusion on her face as she looked from the bear to his face.

"Why don't you hold on to him for me? He needs a new home anyways and I know he'll be much happier with you. And if you need me for anything, your mothers have a way to get ahold of me. It's a secret though...so don't go telling anyone else alright?" he asked with a chuckle as Kat nodded her head quickly several times as she turned to look at both Eva and Kennedy seemingly wanting to go. Jack standing back up once more making Kat step back a bit as he excused himself once more and that he'd see them all in a week or so. Leaving Kathleen alone with the two women as she hesitantly looked up at them.

Kat finished up her food, and continued scrounging around the plate for anything she might have missed, stopping just as the doctor re-entered the hospital room, carrying some clothes and the paperwork and medicines he had left for. Eva and Kennedy both glanced over the paperwork quickly before signing it, and nodded in acknowledgment as the doctor spoke to them. "We'll take good care of her," Eva promised him.

Eva smiled as the doctor assured Kat that she could keep the bear. The girl seemed unsure at first, but eventually hugged the bear to her chest before reaching out to take the clothing that was offered to her. “Now your wolf can have a friend,” Eva suggested, grinning. “I’m sure they’ll get along wonderfully.”
Kat changed into her new clothes, and the doctor eventually excused himself. Kat blinked up at the pair of women. “Let’s go home,” Kennedy told her. “You can get some real rest. In bed. It’ll be better for your back than the floor.” She offered a gentle smile to Kat before turning to lead the way out of the hospital.

The drive home was quiet. Kennedy had offered to drive back home—a good idea since Eva almost immediately dozed off in the passenger seat. She was probably just as exhausted as Kennedy felt, if not more so. Hospital trips always wound up being tiring for everyone involved, no matter how often they occurred. The car pulled into the driveway and Kennedy gently nudged Eva awake again. Eva let out a confused groan as she sat up again and shook herself awake before following Kennedy from the car and towards the house, beckoning for Kat to follow them.
