So lately I've been messing around with a world concept but I've been having some trouble finding people to play around in it with. I'm pretty new to RpN (it's been a few years since I touched any forums at all lol) and I've got some hope for this place, but we'll see.
The concept I have in mind is a world where superhuman abilities are actually fairly common--probably one in ten has some kind of ability, maybe more. A number of them aren't very immediately useful (boosted immune system, temperature resistance, glowing, etc) while a very, very rare few are graced with extreme powers which are very dangerous and usually need to be contained for the sake of everyone else. (Overall I'd like to see some interesting powers come up, rather than the standard gamut of pyrokinesis, telekinesis, etc., or if those do come up then the price could be something interesting, or the power could be generated in an interesting way idk get creative yeah)
All powers, however, have a flipside--a price, so to speak--which varies from person to person. Someone who produces light patterns on their skin, for instance, might consume a lot of energy and shorten their life by that much more every time they use their powers. I have a character who teleports, but the more he does it the more his memory slips and he suffers from amnesia pretty frequently. The less prominent your power the less damaging your price is likely to be, but it varies.
(It's worth noting that, while without a real title, those with inhuman powers have come to be known as the Enlightened based off a religious movement a few years back, where a cultish group believed that those with powers had been--you guessed it--enlightened and should be worshiped. This is not true, of course, but the name went mainstream and has stuck around even if the cult movement has faded to the background.)
There are no superheroes in the traditional sense here, since ordinary humans are highly mistrustful of those more gifted and openly heroic actions usually are met with a "we had it handled thanks for nothing" sort of reaction. The Enlightened can still become "superheroes" but generally they try to contain that within the Enlightened community before things get dragged out into the light. There are quite a few "villains", with motives ranging from simply wanting to use their powers for selfish purposes to wanting to make ordinary humans suffer for their discrimination. One of the big questions in this 'verse, really, is what obligations and morals come with the powers you're gifted with? It's something I hope to explore.
What I'm looking for is a sort of slice-of-life kind of thing, I suppose, but with the idea of exploring what it's like to live in a world where your powers are something to hide, to be ashamed of, for which you are not special. I can go into a lot of detail about the setting--I'm seriously not joking I've been thinking about this for ages--but this has already gone on long enough lol.
If you're into third person lit+ rp and want to play around with some plot arcs (there can be more than one!! structuring it like a series of short stories would be great actually) then let me know. not sure if I wanna do a group or 1x1 but we'll see if I get anything at all ahaha owo)b
