Extinction: Astra Chronicles, is a Forum RP that is based upon the Lore and World of its parent Chat RP: Extinction. As the name suggests, Astra Chronicles will be set in the advance Astraios Institute (See Below) and its surrounding area in Ottawa, Canada.

While playing the Chat RP will help you have a greater understanding of the Infected creatures and world we will be exploring, it is not a requirement. Unlike the Chat RP, Astra Chronicles will consist more of your character's own personal struggles with the Outbreak of Infection, and it is aimed at bringing a more in depth look surrounding the Infection's lore, and the secrecy that envelops the cure and the infection itself.

So don't worry about your role-playing skills, or your knowledge of the world. All are welcome to play in the horrifying merciless world of Extinction - Astra Chronicles.

SettingBanner-1.png

The setting of Astra Chronicles will be mainly surrounding the Astraios Institute in Ottawa Canada. For those of you who do not know, Ottawa is located in the southern portion of the Ontario province and is neighboring the state of New York. While characters can be free to explore the surrounding areas or even other cities as they guide the plot, this Forum RP will be surrounding events that occur inside Astra Medical Industries, the Astraios Institute and the mysteries surrounding the infection and its cure.

Founded upon the work and dedication of Sir Frederick Banting at the University of Toronto over a hundred years ago, Astra Medical Industries “strives to modernize the way we preform medicine”. Located in Ottawa, Canada, Astra was established in 1943 at the famous Astraios Institute, by Professor Isaac Maxim.

Utilizing new methodologies, Astra Corporation hopes to manufacture medications that reflect “the achievements that the human race has discovered in the Twenty-First century”. From alleviating symptoms of Alzheimer's Disease to researching possible cures for Cancer, Astra Medical Industries is guiding the way in its state of the art headquarters, the Astraios Institute, that has been recently retrofitted for the fourth time in its history. Named after the Titan of the Stars, the Astraios Institute was once a laboratory for astronomic research. Bought by Professor Maxim in 1940, it was quickly reconstructed as a medical research lab.

Over time the Astraios institute and Astra Medical Industries as a whole have received world-wide fame for discovering cures for common aliments in developing nations. The current Astraios Insitute is a facility compromised of one large research lab, that is eleven floors tall, and twelve other supporting structures. The facility also contains a few acres of natural green-space, that contains various greenery from mostly large fields, to a lake, and the southern portion of a forest.

During the Outbreak of the Infection, people began to migrate to the Astraios institute, leaving their homes and towns beyond, after Astra had advertised on radio stations that people should not give up hope, as they had developed medicates to fight the infection and were getting closer to working on a full-fledged antidote.

While minor products have been developed at Astra Medical Industries, to slow or stop the spread of infection, it is currently impossible to reverse the process on those who have become fully infected. Though a flood of nearly refuge-like individuals have showed up nearby the Astra Headquarters, to find shelter, to assist or to merely get their hands on the addictive experimental products. Unfortunately with this many people squatting on Astra’s land, supplies have begun to run low, and situation only seems to grow worse, as no progress on finding a full-fledged antidote has been made thus far.

Rules & Regulations

  • To Join - To Join Astra Chronicles, all you have to do is post in the OOC thread saying that you are interested, or even better posting a character thread that contains your character’s completed bio. Of course if your character bio is not finished, but you require some assistance, feel free to post it in its own thread and we can give you suggestions on how to possibly make it a completed individual. Once a character has been posted, Pineapple or myself (Miz), will give it the stamp of approval, or suggest some changes to make it more acceptable for the game. This process is similar for all NPCs except that they will be posted solely in the OOC thread (so that our forums don’t fill up with too many Character bios).
  • Posting - When playing Astra Chronicles we have some basic guidelines when posting. We desire you to follow a very simple template we have at the bottom of this post that includes the location of your character and your character’s graphic banner, but as well we expect you to have a post that is at least a paragraph long. You can write one-liners in some situations, but they should not be an everyday occurrence. If your post is not at least a paragraph long, consider adding some filler such as your character’s personal thoughts, a description of your characters point of view, or add extra dialogue. Trust us, its easy! :)
  • Realism - Extinction’s setting is based upon the real world, and as such we expect things to be as realistic as possible. While this does not mean we expect you to use actual street maps of our locations, but that you are expected to play with your character’s skills and actions with realism. This means that anything you don’t see actually occurring in the real world, shouldn’t be happening in Extinction.
  • Statistics - Your characters statistics are a measure of your characters inherent traits. You receive 21 points to distribute amongst them. An average statistic is three, but this can go down to one, or up to six. Below is a list of the statistics and what each numerical value of a stat is.
    Body:

(Your characters physical health and strength)

    Dexterity:

    (your characters hand eye co-ordination)

    Endurance:

(How long your character can physically or mentally exert themselves before becoming fatigued)

    Awareness:

(Your characters awareness of their surroundings)

    Logic:

(Your character's Common Sense; Not Specific Knowledge)

    Leadership:

(Your characters ability to guide other characters (NCCs included) )

    Marksmanship:

(Your characters ability to aim (with ranged or melee weapons) and skill with firearms)

    Numerical Values & Explanation

    :
"]A trivial stat is quite pathetic to be had. A person with trivial endurance would be exhausted preforming seemingly simple things, such as walking to and from a store.

"]An inferior stat is not entirely desirable and is considered below average. A person with an inferior dexterity stat would be typically terrible at anything involving hand-eye coordination, but they can still preform the task in some amount, such as possibly being able to react to a dodge-ball being thrown at them.

"]An average stat is well average... A person with an average awareness isn’t considered anything special, they can notice things that a normal untrained eye with proper vision could see, or hear basic sounds that are close by. Nothing amazing... just average...

"]A great stat is desirable and considered above average. A person with a great body stat is someone who worked out in a gym regularly and has paid more attention to their health than the average person. With a great body stat, a person could preform basic strength exercises without getting tired and can try to ignore some pain with some success..

"]An extraordinary stat is considered far superior than average. A person with an extraordinary logic stat is a person with Vulcan like logic. They see things with clarity and can deduce obviously logical conclusions, but can have foggy deductions when under duress.

"]A monumental stat is nearly god-like status. A person with monumental leadership is an individual who can motivate others to his or her cause with ease. People with monumental leadership are normally famous world leaders that have the ability to persuade and convince large amounts of people to follow them regardless of the situation or attitude on the topic. Such as George Washington, or, on the other side of the coin, Adolf Hitler.

  • Character - Characters in Astra Chronicles should be as individualistic as possible. When considering your character, you should focus on their personality first and foremost, their personality will consist of how they act, what they believe and how they interact with others. After developing some sort of idea about your character’s personality, try to develop realistic reasons for as to why they act in such a matter. These reasons can extend from their appearance, their history or possibly even a deeper psychological issue.
  • Advantages/Disadvantages - To further individualize your characters, you will be giving your character unique advantages and disadvantages. These abilities or traits can be passive or actual skills, such as medical knowledge, a physical disability, clumsiness or even schizophrenia, and are only limited by your own imagination. The only requirement is that for every advantage you create, you need to create an equal or more powerful disadvantage for balance reasons. If you are up for a challenge you can design your character to have more disadvantages than advantages, or add advantages/disadvantages later on in the role-play. However, a character must have at least two advantages and disadvantages, and no more than four!

    Note

    - Your Advantages and Disadvantages don't have to be related but they should be relatively balanced on the overall scale of things
  • Weapons & Armour - The World of Extinction has a wide variety of weapons and armours, most of which are not available to the general public. The setting to this role-play is Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, go ahead, look it up, I'll wait. Now, gun laws are not like Texas here, people may have a hand gun, or a bow for sport. As for body armor, most people would not regularly have these. If your character has any of this, you must explain why they do. As well, you need to keep track of reloading and ammunition. for details on weapons and armour, you can check the following lists:
  • Combat - Unlike the Chat role-play of Extinction, there is no DM to conduct fair combat. As a player in Extinction, you will control if a bullet or melee weapons misses or hits, and how much damage it does. Now fortunately this isn’t solely dependent on your judgement. Your character’s statistics will guide you to making a fair decision when it comes to aim, your character’s ability to preform actions, and the timing of those said actions.
  • Neutral Controlled Characters (NCC) - Any player can create a neutral controlled character. Unlike player characters however, these characters can be played by anyone else, not strictly the creator. NCC’s are considered more of side characters, and while they can be controlled by others, more complicated issues, such as adding something to that NCC’s bio, are up to the creator’s discretion and should be discussed before being altered. Players can ask to make a NCC their own character, with the approval of the creator and ether Pineapple or myself (Miz).

Weaponry

Below is a large list of all the weapons in the Extinction setting. The range is how far the weapon can fire and be accurate; the power is how much (relative) damage the weapon can be expected to deal. A Shotgun with a low damage will still deal much more damage than a pistol with high. Lastly, you can tell a weapons legality by the colour of the weapons name, below is a short list showcasing these colours.

  • Legal to own.
  • Legal to own, with a permit.
  • Illegal to own, military use only.
  • Illegal to own, banned in warfare.

L████ W█████████:

It should be known that the actual origins of the Infection are for the most part unknown.

R██████ M███████:

Unknown?

L████ W█████████:

Yes, well we haven’t had much time to investigate it, with the quarantines and all, but we have uncovered some information within the past few hours.

K████████ M██████:

Well, what do we know about this? After all we put you in charge of the matter. ████████ is going to chew us out if we don't get to the bottom of this fast.

D██████ M████████:

You mean because his wife is out there?

R██████ M███████:

We’re not suppose to be talking about that.

L████ W█████████:

All we know is that its a ███████████ parasite, that seems to have what we would call in the business as a 'DNA Cocktail'. It seems to have genetics that are attributed to almost sixteen other parasitic ███████████. Yet beyond these stolen genetic codes, we have found no recorded matches. I won’t get into the actual specifics, as I have filed a physical report to Doctor M███████ labeled AST███.██.█.

R██████ M███████:

That isn't, of course, unusual for microscopic organisms, for all we know it could have only been living in one acre of the Amazon rain forest and was just released as a lumbering company chopped down its natural habitat. Other things to consider is maybe ███████ ██████████, some kind of ████████, or possibly a dangerous strand of ██████████.

L████ W█████████:

Though all of our points fixate that it was ██████████, but even with that theory considered, any biology major with proper tools could have created something like this.

D██████ M████████:

Possibly a Virus-junky or a trained Bio-terrorist? Hell, some Bio student could have just won the parasitic jackpot. Who knows.

L████ W█████████:

We do know one thing though.... by how they grow and spread, they are pretty damn efficient.

It is currently August 17th, 2023 (08/17/2023) at the Astraios Research Institute, and the supposed Cure for the Infection has yet to be produced....

Name: Gregory Dunham

Age: 30

Gender: Male

Ethnicity: White American

Sexual Orientation: Hetero Sexual

Height: 5 feet 11 inches

Weight: 155

Statistics:

Body: 3

Dexterity: 4

Endurance: 6

Awareness: 3

Logic: 3

Leadership: 1

Marksmanship: 1

Appearance: http://images.starpulse.com/Photos/Previews/House-tv-show-07.jpg

Advantages:

Amazing willpower: Years of working in a morgue has not only impeccably increased Gregory’s ability to use tools such as scalpels and such, but has increased his mental willpower to that of Frodo Baggins, learning to keep all emotions out of the equation and to perform his job clean and efficiently.

Keen Observation: Sometimes a body is so horribly maimed you can do nothing to help it, at times like those one must observe the small things about a human body, the way the hands are facing, which direction was the skull facing at the time of death, how long has the person been dead and is the body showing such signs of decay.

Disadvantages:

Cold Hearted: Having never dated nor married because his job required his emotions to remain outside of his job, he could never bring love into his life without tainting his own job. Friends can get their own friends without him.

OverAnalyzer: Unless hes specifically looking for something he will be unable to find things, think of it as looking too hard for things that dont need to be looked hard for

(Previous) Career/Job: Worked in a morgue, performing autopsies.

Interests and Hobbies: Very interested in the way the actual human bodies deal with things, like trauma, and more recently, a pandemic infection of zombies. He likes to read up on essays pertaining the human body.

Personality: Used to be an outgoing guy, but the demands for his job quickly overcame his original nature, after being so long on his job he was forced to snuff out his old nature, it now lies in the deep recesses of his consciousness.

Behaviors & Mannerisms: The smell of death and decay constantly follow Gregory as he talks in a monotone and keeps his hands in his pockets. His job is always on his mind as he treats each and every body with respect.

Fears: Fears that he did not do a body right and that he defiled the bodies he performs autopsies on.

Mercy vs Justice: After seeing so many dead people and seeing their families come in, his hate for criminals knows no bounds. “Criminals are as rotten as their dead victims” is how he says it.

Optimism vs Pessimism: Pessimistic

Humanity: He has realized that zombies are a threat to human society but he has never brought himself to the point where he can kill a human being that has not yet fully transformed. He will tie them up and wait until they turn before killing them

History:

Post-Apocalypse day 1: Its been damn near who knows how long since ive seen a human being, after that incident, i'm beginning to lose my sense of humanity... these next few entries will describe who I am and where I came from, if you found this book assume that I have died.

Post-Apocalypse day 2: My name. Is Gregory Dunham, I was born on August 2. I am currently 30 years old. I worked as a doctor performing autopsies.

Post-Apocalypse day 5: I was born in the quaint town of Oakville, Kansas. I now live in Canada due to my job. We are in Canada, and what has happened has completely turned the world upside down.

Post-Apocalypse day 7: When I was born, it was a very special moment for my parents, they had originally thought that they were infertile and that they had no chance of having a child. I was a miracle, but now I wish I wasn't born

Post-Apocalypse day 9: My birth was such a great experience for my parents, so obviously, they spoiled me. I was so happy in that time of my life. From birth to college I was very happy, I never had problems, I always got by in life so easily.

Post-Apocalypse 15: I was looking for supplies when apparently my body decided not to notice that a zombie was behind me. Lucky I was not bitten. I am surprisingly good at this scavenging business even though my life was pretty well off. But about my old life, it was ... uneventful to say the least. Barely anything happened. To be honest, I wished that it was more exciting but my parents decided to keep things calm and cool for me.

Post-Apocalypse 16: This entry marks the end of my attempted grasp at my humanity. I went to college at Harvard's Medical School, where I had received a full scholarship. I advanced through college quickly and earned my Master's at the age of 22. I have not bothered to apply for a Ph.D and from the looks of things it wouldn't matter anyway. Still thinking that life was grand, I received a job offer performing autopsies. This ends my rendition of my short life.

His journals were found in his office shortly after he ran from his overcrowded city.

Day 1: This is great! This is finally my chance to discover new nuances about the human body, who knows what kind of things I will be able to tell from the bodies of organ donors.

Day 7: The smell of rot and death can only be held back by my extreme efforts at keeping my area clean. What I had first thought was a respectful research on the human body has turned into a sick and twisted version of my own delusional dreams.

Day 14: Two weeks into the job and already I can feel my own body begin to rot and decay with the bodies that I research. What sick animal would treat humans like this. I just recently had a body come in that was so horribly maimed that I almost lost my composure on the job. I must not let this happen again.

Day 65: Its been a while since my last entry, I have been so consumed with the substance of my profession that I have had no time to do anything but examine bodies.

Day 96: Strange one this, we just recently got a body that was dead but only had a small bite mark. The person seems to have died from a severe fever, what kind of bite was this?

Day 96: After a couple hours of examinations we have determined that it is indeed a human bite mark, very strange. Further research will be conducted

Day 97: A day later it seems that the body has rapidly decomposed, my team feels that we should move the body so we move it into a private room where we perform countless tests.

Day 98: I just recently heard on the news of the walking dead? This is very strange, but I stopped listening to the news a long time ago, we continue to examine the body and the bite mark seems to have turned black and the body has stopped decaying.

Day 99: The body has moved. Its eyes have opened and my team quickly restrained the human body in light of the recent news of the walking dead.

Day 99: What kind of trickery is this? We have restrained the body with the best of our ability and it continues to gain strength far greater than any human could possibly have.

Day 100: Hell has come on earth, my team and I were working on the body when the restraints snapped and the thing quickly took out my team while I ran for my life. This might be my last entry. But one this is for sure, no mercy is to be have for these things, because they wont have any for you.

Appearance: When seeing Rahmiel, people often notice his well-organized attire. He is often dressed in a polo shirt, and pants. Often times he is wearing a lab coat, especially if he is at work or coming home from work. He always enjoys having at least one pen attached to his pocket-protector or collar, because it’s always useful to have a writing utilize. In recent years Rahmiel is starting to notice many wrinkles in his face and gray patches forming in his hair. To counter this he has let his beard grow out much more (even though it too has mostly gone gray). His most recent complain is that he is being forced to wear spectacles because of his deteriorating eyesight. All a part of getting older he always says...

Advantages

Pharmaceutical Knowledge

- Rahmiel has been working at Astra Medical Industries for nearly two decades. While a majority of his patents have failed to receive the FDA's fullest approval and are not sold to the mass market, Doctor Morrison is still highly regarded in the field of biomedical research.

Pathology

- Rahmiel's field of study is Pathology, or the study of biological diseases, either natural or man-made. This knowledge assists him in analyzing infections and how to avoid them.

Botany

- Developed from his various hobbies, such as hiking and vegetable gardening, Rahmiel has a large degree of knowledge in Botany. While he is far from a professional he does know many different species of plants and will mention them to individuals he is talking to if he sees them.

Disadvantages:

Chronic Stress

- Rahmiel has difficulty dealing with stressful situations. Normally he is calm and collective but if pushed too far he can easily get frustrated. While he does not develop temper tantrums, Doctor Morrison is well known for "losing his cool", if an experiment didn't go entirely as planned.

Addiction

- Hard to call it much of an addiction or at least that is how he sees it. Rahmiel secretly takes Fluoxetine and Ibuprofen in some large quantities when he has become stressed. To such a degree that he has come to require it to perform at his full potential.

Depression

- When the initial outbreak of infection occurred, Rahmiel was unable to reach his wife, Rebecca, and get her to a safely quarantined zone. Unsure if she is still alive, Rahmiel has slipped more and more into depression and has become anxious to go search for her himself. This has led him to become somewhat forgetful of his duties at ASTRA Industries, and it is beginning to become noticeable to his colleagues.

Career/Job: Director of Biomedical research at Astra Medical Industries

Interests and Hobbies: When not concerned with his job, Rahmiel enjoys listening to very soft music or classical music. He also loves to spend time reading science fiction, taking care of his Bonsai Trees, hiking and vegetable gardening. All of these activities put him at ease from his stressful life.

Personality: Rahmiel is for the most part a calm and serious person. Rarely having any appreciation for sarcasm or jokes, he is easily stressed out and frustrated. To counter this, he tries to do calming activities and practices that allow him to keep his temper under control, his greatest muse being his wife. This makes him somewhat strange to others but by how he talks most know he is as smart as the rumors say he is.

Behaviors & Mannerisms: When Rahmiel is stressed he will do a variety of different behaviors, normally it consists of him constantly moving and being unable to sit still. Causing him to tap his feet or fingers, or have him to get up out of his chair and walk around the room. It is also common for him to do a similar activity of walking around and staring at certain objects when he is deep thought.

Fears: While Rahmiel would love to say he has a fear of growing older, his more prominent fear is a fear of deep water. He never did learn how to swim. He was always meaning to do that.

Mercy vs. Justice: Rahmiel, his name derives from the Angel of Mercy and while he more inclined to be merciful, this comes from his reasoning not necessarily his emotions. Seeing things from different perspectives he often times can't come to hate people. However, he also believes in the natural order of things and won't always interfere with someone's choice to seek revenge.

Optimism vs. Pessimism: While more recently becoming a Pessimist, Rahmiel has often been considered an optimist, especially when it comes to medical research. It was unusual for him not to find some kind of possible scientific advancement that could somehow turn the tides on a current problem. However with his succumbing to stress and depression, Rahmiel's intellect has begun to backfire, and is becoming much more of a pessimist and he can back it up with facts.

Humanity: In his youth, Rahmiel would have been considered very humanitarian. Always trying to help those in need, but since the outbreak of the infection he has begun to weigh individuals and what their worth is. This is because he questions the belief that they will be able to save everyone from the infection (aka doubting his own work).

History: Rahmiel Morrison was born in Ottawa after his grandparents had emigrated from Northern Ireland to Canada fleeing the Wars that plagued Europe at the time. His mother brought up first in Ireland and brought to Canada as well, was extremely religious and to the disagreement of his father, named Rahmiel after the "Angel of Mercy". While his mother's side was relatively poor being an immigrant family. His father was a reputable lawyer in Ontario and had many large cases and lawsuits making his family well-off economically. Moving to Toronto as a boy, his father got involved with the Canadian government and Parliament. Rahmiel's father always hoped he would carry on the Morrison legacy in ether Law or Politics, but instead Rahmiel was rather interested in science as a teenager. This passion soon manifested itself into a career path when Rahmiel reached the University of Toronto. At first he thought he would become a general practitioner or possibly a surgeon, or even a nuclear physicist, but those thoughts quickly changed after being inspired by the work of Noble Peace Prize winner Professor Isaac Maxim (a celebrated alumnus. After studying Maxim's discoveries, Rahmiel almost instantly knew what he wanted to do from then on out, and that was to become a pathologist. His hope was to study and find cures for many aliments that threatened mankind. He saw that as his purpose.

After graduating and studying for several more years to receive his doctorate, Rahmiel first considered working at the university when he got an internship to Astra Medical industries in 1999. Not sure if he was willingly to work in the corporate ladder, he was only moved to join the company at first because Professor Maxim was its founder. Assigned to the biomedical research department, Rahmiel worked on several important research assignments where he had a chance to excel and quickly given higher ranks in the department until he officially became the director in 2015.

Though beyond his professional career, nothing else really developed in Rahmiel life. Not being very sociable, it was hard for him to make friends beyond his colleagues and not having very much time to himself, dating was considered almost out of the question. He didn't mind this so much, but as he started to grow older he began to worry he would never find a match for him. This is when Rebecca came into the picture, and blew Rahmiel away. Rebecca Richmond, a relatively young researcher in the Botany Department, first met Rahmiel after he stumbled on her foot on his way to a meeting in the summer of 2017. It was considered somewhat of an awkward pairing, Rebecca being a social butterfly at the age of 24 and Rahmiel being the quiet research director at the steady age of 41. Yet the two seemed almost made for each other. Rahmiel was relatively patient and was always interested in what she had to say, and Rebecca was always tender and could calm Rahmiel when he was stressed. Rahmiel would often use his spare time to check on Rebecca in the Botany department or go on hikes with her. It was through her that he came to love botany and learn the names of large variety of plants and flowers.

In 2020, after three years of dating, Rahmiel proposed and got engaged to Rebecca. From then on out, most of Rahmiel's positive feelings came from Rebecca, and he soon became too reliant on her for day to day motivations. His office always smelled of some flower she had picked for him in the greenhouse, and their house was always cleverly decorated. While the couple did consider children an option, they thought themselves as far too busy to concern themselves with child rearing and thought it to be best saved for later.

Yet Rebecca wasn't the only person Rahmiel became sociable with. In 2021, a young communications intern for the company was introduced to him, fresh out of college he was soon hired to become Rahmiel's personal assistant. Being several decades younger than him, the young man, named Erik Haley, became a son-like figure to the aging Rahmiel and was one of the few people he could handle jokes from. Rahmiel enjoyed Erik's optimism but refrained from showing it often and addressed him sternly as "Mr. Haley..." when catching Erik slack off (which was often). All though wasn't pleasant between Rahmiel and Erik, as it became obvious to Rahmiel that Erik had some close feelings for his young wife, Rebecca. While Rahmiel never approached Erik about the issue, it did build up some resistance between the two when Rebecca was somehow involved.

In Early July of 2023, the first incidents of the outbreak were reported to Rahmiel and he quickly ordered his entire department to investigate on the issue. However even when he first heard the initial reports, his primary concern was for Rebecca and her wellbeing, while he urged her to come with her one morning instead of arriving later at her regular shift, she resisted telling him he needed to focus on his duties not her own wellbeing. It was later that morning that the first quarantines were issued for Ottawa. Unable to reach his wife through the telephone, and unable to leave the Institute (the head officials fearing the worse in the city), he was forced to stay inside the Astraois institute and to continue his research even though his heart wished to go searching in the city himself.
