Exalted III: Poorly-Named Game

Forced back from an attempt to free one of her pinned crewmen, Ukkoya grimaces as she manages to block one mad kobold's swing and it rings through her bones with a wrongness. And more pile on, battering away from all sides.

"Either we get. Captured," she grunts, the last word punctuated by a hack of the cutlass. "And hope they take us to the same place. Or--ugn!" Her footing slips as one blood-ape goes crashing into another nearby. "Or. We pull our men out. Retreat."

Guess I should set up a dice room or something, so we can all roll conveniently.

...

Okay, I think that's done. Try the "Poorly-Named Room" if you want to roll there.

Anyway, JayTee, good news. You made a mistake calculating soak. It's applied to damage dice, not successes. So roll 5 dice and see how much damage you do.

Ukkoya

Something flashes in the corner of her eye. She catches sight of Kyros letting loose a barrage of attacks--unarmed. In the brief space free of kobolds, she spins around, readying her sword against the unslaught.

Going with Defend Other as suggested.

The screeching creatures continue their assault, sometimes literally tripping over each other in their eagerness to bash your knees in.

Kobolds attack everyone again. Edit: roll link here.

Kobolds 17
Demons 5
Troll 4
Kyros 1
Ukkoya -9

Over to the demons.

6 successes, base damage 16 before extra successes and soak. Damage is initiative to Kyros, bashing to Ukkoya. The demons are not hit, thanks to Ukkoya.

Ukkoya - Bones of Glass (Halved Soak from Stamina); 1/13 Personal Motes

Calculating decisive bashing damage
Kobolds vs Ukkoya (defending Demons): 17 damage dice for 4 successes

Fills 0 and -1 health levels, so -1 dice penalty going forward

Hacking left and slashing right, her blade flashes before the kobolds, drawing their attention. There's a crackle of pain as the frenzied little buggers crowd in, landing blows. She grunts, keeping ears and eyes open for any indiscriminate blood ape fists swinging in.

Kyros continued to swat away the Kobolds, backing up in to a defensive position.

His demons, on the other hand, struck back with a vengeance. Moving almost faster than the eye could follow, they pounced on the Kobolds with renewed bloodlust.

OOC

4 personal motes to bring my Parry up to 7, beating their offense attempt.

Demons are using Principle of Motion to attack twice with 14 dice and 18 damage. First attack nets 7 successes, while the second attack has 3 successes

Both targets have defense 5, so they're each hit once with 2 extra successes.

Kobolds have soak 7 and take 7 damage. That reduces their Size, so they roll against rout. They get 5 successes on 4 dice and stay in the fight. They've got 1 damage box marked right now, and are currently Size 1.

Troll has soak 13 and takes 5 damage. It's Crashed. So it doesn't get to go next after all, and might take real damage from the demons if the demons survive another round.

Demons get two Crash bonuses.

Kobolds 17Demons 15Kyros 1 Troll -1

Ukkoya -9

Over to Kyros. Both opponents have -2 onslaught penalties to their defenses. If either of you manages to finish off the kobolds, you'll get an Initiative Shift.

Monster bits fly everywhere. It would be incredibly gorey, except these creatures apparently don't have blood.

Pretty soon, there are only about a dozen little creatures still fighting. The big glass-masked creature, meanwhile, has been driven up against one of the cavern walls.

Seeing the Kobolds falling back, vulnerable and exposed, was the opening Kyros needed to try and turn this thing around. Rushing forward, lashed out with fist and feet to finish off the weakened hoard.

OOC

Decisive Attack on Kobolds. Spending 9m from my personal Pool and 2 from Peripheral pool on an Excellency and Fist of Iron. 24 for 7 successes Using Major Intimacy "Underestimate me at your peril" for Fist of Iron.

Decisive? Are you sure about that?

You only have 1 Initiative to spend, so a Decisive isn't gonna do much damage. And on a Decisive you don't get to use your Accuracy bonus.

OOC

Yeah, I forgot how fighting Battlegroups worked for a moment. I'll do a Withering Attack.

/OOC

10 damage. Kobolds are toast.

They crashed you, so crashing them gives you an Initiative Shift. And I think reducing Size counts, so...you reset to 3 initiative, roll Join Battle, and can act again. Can't attack the troll with your extra action, though.

Kyros's fists slam through skulls and his feet burst through stomachs. The discipline of the monsters is shattered immediately before their bodies are.

Feeling the pressure taken off of him, Kyros took fresh stock of the situation. The only thing left now was the troll itself, and Kyros had little doubt it would prove just as troublesome as the Kobolds. Falling back, he reached out with his will and began grabbing hold of the fundament of reality, shopping it in to something dangerous.

OOC

Join Battle: 6 dice and 3 auto successes nets me 8 successes total

Shape Sorcery, Flight of the Brilliant Raptor: 11 dice for 8 Sorcerous Motes

Do I regain 5m per the standard mote respiration?

Nah, I'm pretty sure resetting your action doesn't give you another mote drip.

Anyway, the troll's gonna throw a withering attack at Kyros. Base damage 18 if it hits. As always, decide how many motes to spend on defense before looking to see that it rolled...

2 successes

The troll pursues Kyros as he falls back, emitting an oddly musical screech as it does so. It picks up a fallen blood ape on its way forward, and throws it at the sorcerer's face before taking a gigantic swing with its club.

It's now Ukkoya's turn. Then over to the demons, and then to Kyros. Troll's in trouble...

Raising his arms in defense, Kyros moved to bat away the Troll's onslaught.

OOC

Spending 4 peripheral motes to raise my defense by 2, bringing it to 7.

...and it turns out I needn't have bothered, lol

Ukkoya

Ukkoya makes it out of the wave of monsters crashing into each other. Taking a moment to breathe, she finds herself with a clear path towards their remaining foe. A very short path. When had it gotten so close?

Gripping the hilt with both hands, she brings her full weight to bear as she drives her sword into the thing's torso and slashes downwards.

Melee Excellency: Spending 1 Personal mote and 4 Peripheral to add 5 dice to initial roll

Withering Attack: 10 dice (with cutlass) -1 (wound penalty) + 5 (excellency) = 14 dice for 7 successes; Does that make it?

Withering Dmg: 9 + threshold successes

Troll is hit with 2 extra successes. With soak 13, though, it only takes minimum damage. Which turns out to

do nothing.

Still, Ukkoya gets a point of initiative for hitting and the troll gets a point of onslaught penalty. Over to the demons and Kyros.

Demons 15
Kyros 8
Troll -1

Ukkoya -8

Ukkoya's sword rattles off the monster's rocky chest, leaving only a superficial scrape on the creature's skin.

Capitalizing on their successful assault, Kyro's Demons began to swarm the troll, biting in to it and gouging out large chunks of it's flesh with their claws.

Demons are attacking again using Principle of Motion.  14 dice with 18 damage gets me 9 successes for the first attack and 7 successes for the second.

For his part, Kyros continued to grab the fundaments of reality, shaping them in to something just as violent. When it was ready, he unleashed it in a torrent of brilliant fire.

Shape Sorcery action: spending 4m to bring it up to 15 dice for 8 successes + 8 last post is enough to launch the spell. IF the demons don't kill the troll, hopefully this will.

First attack hits by 5. 10 damage after soak makes for

4 levels of damage, assuming battle groups still get double 10s on damage when attacking a crashed target. -1 wound penalty on the troll.

Second attack also hits by 5. 8 levels of damage this time. Troll's dead.

Now...I need to decide how badly the members of your battle groups are messed up. Both took rather a lot of damage. Demons spent a lot of motes and wp on materialization and attacking, too.

The troll, outnumbered and overwhelmed, is swiftly torn to pieces. Kyros's spell is largely superfluous, although some of the blood apes are very glad to see the troll's flesh partially melted. They crave blood, after all, and this is the closest they're likely to get to that.

With the battle over, it's now safe to attend to the wounded. Fortunately wounded is the worst you have - the monsters were aiming at capture, not at killing. The agata is in very bad shape, as is one of the blood apes. Four blood apes are bruised and bloody, but still ready to fight, and one ape is totally unharmed.

As for the crew, Third Cloud has the worst of it. One of his legs is absolutely wrecked. Apparently his bones aren't as tough as they should be; he'll need serious medical help to ever walk again. First Sparrow isn't doing so well either - both of his legs are broken. He'll heal, but only if he gets off the island alive. Janjahar and Tepet Miran are less wounded. They can walk, or at least limp. Fighting might be beyond them though. Reln was knocked unconscious and is still not completely awake, but he has no broken bones and might actually be the healthiest of the group.

So there you are. In a living cavern that wants to eat you, with a badly wounded crew and no obvious way out. It's a good thing you're Exalted, or you'd be doomed to die here.

What do you do?

"Well, Third Cloud, I think we can safely surmise what has happened to your friends." Kyros said, kneeling down to examine the man's injuries. "I may be able to stabilize you for now, but I any long term treatment will have to wait until we get out of here, which I suggest we do immediately upon our escape." He said, moving to tend to the injuries.

"Ukkoya, see if you can find anything that looks like a weak point in the cavern walls, will you?" Asked Kyros. "I have wounded to attend to for the moment."

OOC

Basic first aid: 8 dice for 4 successes

Although Third Cloud is quite greviously wounded, Kyros is able to help him a great deal. The sorcerer re-aligns the man's bones, applies poultices to his bruises, and attaches a splint to his leg before moving on to help the other wounded.

If the group was in Kyros' manse, or another peaceful place, they could be expected to make a complete recovery with nothing more than time and rest. Unfortunately, they're here. And even the most skillfully-made splint doesn't work very well if a Wyld monster smacks it with a club.

Difficulty 3 with Perception + Awareness or Investigation to find a weakness.

The glassy walls of the cavern are unnaturally smooth, and seem to have no cracks or other imperfections. You could probably smash through, but it would be very slow going. And you would need tools.

(Sure, Kyros can look too.)

Tapping on the walls, Kyros eventually notices something odd. In one section of cavern wall, where the wall has a smooth corner, the sound is slightly different. Investigating further, he realizes that he's hearing an ever-so-faint echo - the glass is thinner there, with a vast empty chamber behind only a few feet of crystal. The apes could certainly break through easily enough.

As Kyros contemplates the wall, the island speaks again.

"This...

is...

futile.

My...

forces...

are...

endless.

Surrender...

and...

escape...

pain."

The crew responds with yelling, defiance, and obscenities. The apes just howl.

Sorry about the slow response. Took me a while to notice this for some reason.

If you do break through, you'll find a huge tunnel with a very smooth floor and a 45-degree slope. Fresh air comes from above, an unearthly glimmer comes from below. You're pretty sure the island's heart is down there somewhere.

Difficulty 1 with Dexterity + Athletics to move up or down safely, difficulty 3 if you're trying to take the wounded with you.
