Her flight had arrived earlier than she had expected. But that suited Evangeline well since that left her with a couple of hours before being due at the office. Slipping her purse over her shoulder, she made her way off the company jet. After the flight attendants packed up her luggage into the car, she instructed the driver to take them to her penthouse apartment for her. Instead of going home, she was mood for a greasy American breakfast after spending the better part of the end-of-the-year holidays and new years in Panama. Their food was fantastic, but no one did greasy, egg breakfasts like L.A. restaurants. Hailing a cab at the LAX terminal exit, Evangeline slid into the back seat and instructed the driver to make his way to the West L.A. area.

The drive wasn't too long, even with the heavy Los Angeles traffic. It gave her time to freshen up her make-up as the car was swiftly maneuvered around narrow streets and tight corners. Eva had slept peacefully on the six-hour flight, so she barely looked like she had stepped off a plane less than half an hour earlier. It paid to have a private jet, much quieter than commercial. After paying the driver, she got out and made her way down the sidewalk looking for a place to eat.

Danielle had been at Jo's Diner since the early afternoon and a glance at the clock showed that it was nearing eight o'clock in the evening. She was dead tired and couldn't wait to go back home, change into her pajamas, and flop into her bed and pass out. Thankfully, it being a Tuesday night, the day had been on the slower side, especially now that the tail end of the dinner hour was rolling around. Currently, Danielle was busing what tables weren't in use, humming softly under her breath as she did so. Just a few more hours until close and she could finally go home. To her dismay, just as she cleaned off the final table, the little bell above the door rung as it opened. Blinking some, she looked up and over to the front, wondering if one of the other waitresses' was going to greet the costumer or if she was going to have to.

It turned out she was. "Hello, welcome to Jo's. Let me put this in back and I'll get you started," She called over to the pretty young women who stood beside the host's podium. Picking up the tub she had been filling with dishes for the past half hour, she hurried into the back and dropped it off at the dish washing station. The boy there, who had been previously playing on his phone, sighed and put it away before grabbing a pair of yellow gloves to start getting back to work. Now that, that was done, Danielle headed back out front to greet the woman. "Sorry about that. Is it just you today?" She looked up, head tilted some as what she hoped was a friendly smile came to her lips.

Jo's Diner was a spot she had yet to try. But just with the name, Evangeline could tell it was the right kind of restaurant to find what she was looking for: hash browns smothered in cheese. Her eyes scanned the restaurant as she walked passed the windows on her way to the entrance. There wasn't many people inside, likely due to the hour. All the more attention for Eva! Noticing Danielle as she went by, a slight grin couldn't be helped as she observed her pretty face. Entering the establishment, she paused at the podium to wait to be seated. With the absence of a large group, her eyes followed the only notable movement in the room, Danielle's.

Quickly addressed by the waitress, she answered right away, "Take your time, hun." And she meant that. Eva was no stranger to grunt-work, so she knew that close to closing time, this poor girl must be tired on her feet and looking forward to comfort food and a warm bed. She herself had always looked forward to more excitement after late and hard shifts, regardless of how tired she felt, but she knew that wasn't how most people handled exhaustion. Hearing the clanging of dishes being shuffled in the back as the dishwasher began his work, her gaze was drawn again to Danielle as she exited the kitchens and made her way back.

"Oh yes. Just me tonight," she affably grinned back, with that ever-present tweak of mischief in her eyes. "I'd appreciate a seat by the window if that's possible. People-watching can be entertaining." Although, to be fair, that didn't necessarily mean her attentiveness was going to be limited to those outside.

Danielle seemed to cheer up a little at the pleasant attitude of the young woman and picked up a single menu from a shelf that was indented into the podium. "Well, I'm sure we can manage that," She mused softly, then led the way to one of the window seats, a booth. She motioned for the woman to be seated and set the menu out in front of her, simultaneously grabbing a silverware set from a pocket in the cream apron she was wearing. This too was set down, along side the menu. The window provided a view of the bustling street, people running about along the walkways in the dimming evening light. Whether someone found this pleasing or not was beyond Dani, rather preferring to read than to gaze out windows herself. "So, what can I get started for you, Miss? Water?"

Another item was pulled out of her apron, a notepad this time, and a pen from behind her ear as well. "Also, we make some pretty good breakfast if 'Brinner' is something you're into?" While she waited for the woman's answer, she quickly scrawled the table number and her name in the upper corners for the cook's reference. Somewhat shyly, she tucked a strand of hair that had fallen loose from a messy looking bun on the back of her head, eyes flicking from the pad to the woman's face.

Even in business-mode, Eva tended to be pleasant in attitude. To be honest, even in danger, she seemed to have a casual attitude that annoyed to no end in those situations that call for more seriousness. But that is topic for another time! Following Danielle to the allotted booth, she slid into the leather-covered seat gracefully, tucking her legs under the table. "Thanks, hun," she said as she was handed the menu and her utensils were set down for her. She didn't need to look at the menu to know what drink she would want though. "Water and a chocolate shake would be heaven." It might be an odd thought that a shake at this hour would be the item desired. But only those that don't love chocolate as much as Eva does simply wouldn't understand. As she finished the request for the drink, she opened the menu to swiftly scan the pages for breakfast items. "In fact, brinner would be perfect too," she added without looking up. "A three-egg breakfast, should do it," she muttered loud enough for Danielle to hear. "Hm..."

Perhaps people-watching wasn't always a for of entertainment for many, but it was undeniable that sometimes, it could be interesting. As Evangeline is speaking and deciding quickly on the sides she wants with her meal, across the street, in Danielle's full view, a group of guys are stumbling out of a bar in animated discussion that can't be heard all the way where the girls were. There were threatening glares, shaking fists, angered points, and what looked like might be shouting between two clustered groups. And it seemed to be escalating rather quickly, making a few others outside on the sidewalk pause and looked worriedly in their direction. Eva, was oblivious to any of this as she paused just a couple seconds to look at the sides menu. "Umm, hash browns with lots of cheese on them," she spoke, looking up at Danielle, as one guy threw the first punch. "And bacon and sausage."

A fight broke out between the groups. Eva only smiled up at Danielle, not noticing what was going on outside.

Danielle scrawled the shake down with a slight smile, respecting the choice. While she might not have been a Chocolate-cono sur like Eva might be, she herself enjoyed a good shake or hot coco when time allowed. While the woman was busy looking through the meal options, Dani's own gaze wandered out the window when she saw different movements to those of the people walking the streets. Out of habit she continued to write down what the woman said, but her eyes continued to flick back between her and the window to check on the scene outside. "Excuse me...but do you want to switch seats maybe? I'm not sure that's what you meant by people watching..." Her chin gestured towards the commotion, her lips pursed faintly in a distasteful way.

This was no an uncommon occurrence, especially on a late night in LA. They tended to happen more towards the weekends but often there were outliers like this one. There was no doubt that the cops were already being called by some local establishment, someone closer to the action than Jo's, so Dani made no move to call for someone to contact the police.

It was difficult to avoid looking outside at the building animosity between the two groups. They caused a few people to scatter and get out of their way as they stretched out to take most of the sidewalk and some of the edge of the street for their fight. Definitely a typical scene outside an LA bar, even if Danielle's assessment of it being too early in the week was right. They must be regulars to be there at such an atypical hour. Evangeline's gaze finally moved up to Danielle's face and she saw that her eyes were diverted outside. The question if she wanted to move seats also sparked her curiosity to look outside at what had the waitress so unamused. With a grin on her face already, she turned to look. "Oh dear. Not what I had in mind, but I guess that's what I get for not being specific about what I wanted to see," she joked, as amused as Dani was not.

The bartender from the pub, an unusually large man made more of muscle than anything else, stomped outside and shouted above all the fighting guys, towering over them all. They all stopped and moved out of arms reach, all except the two "leaders" of the groups and instigators of the brawl. The sizable man stepped forward, grabbed each one by the shoulder, and ripped them apart from each other, sending each flying back a few feet. Clearly, he wasn't going to be having any of that outside his bar. One had to respect someone who could handle their own business like that. He waved them off and pointed directly at each one, his expression indicating a strong threat had been uttered to make them leave. One group turned and left down the sidewalk. The other tried looking tough a moment longer before retreating to the diner-side of the street.

With a smirk, Evangeline began, "Looks like it's-..." But she stopped in mid-sentence as a realization dawned on her, her expression changing from amusement to a sullen scowl. "Oh no..." Getting a good look at the head of the group coming their way, her eyes briefly met his as he crossed the street. Quickly she rose, hopefully not knocking Danielle down in the process, "Uh, ex-boyfriend," she explained quickly. "I'm gonna just.." she grabbed her by the shoulders and switched places with her, "..gonna just hide in the back." With a slight flail, she spun on her heels and dashed into through the kitchen door to wait him out, "If he ask about me, I'm not here!" The doors closed behind her. She was both laughing and worried all at once; it was a funny and an annoying situation.

The amusement in Eva's face confused Dani, but she didn't speak on it. Some people found entertainment out of people's drunken brawling in the streets. Danielle found it annoying and dull. It was one of the main reasons she generally chose not to drink, it only inhibited bad decisions. Not to mention it was usually done in a public setting with loud music and even an even louder group of people, things she tended to avoid. A little gasp left her when Eva suddenly stood up, knocking her back against a table that was probably a little too close to the booth the woman had previously been seated in. Even more surprisingly she was suddenly grasped by the shoulders and maneuvered beside the booth. "Uhm, Miss! You can't go in there-" She called after the strange woman, watching the doors swing shut behind her. Before she could chase after her though, the group that had split off from the fight towards the diner entered.

The supposed leader, whom Dani assumed was the alleged ex-boyfriend, stepped forward, looking around curiously. "Wasn't there another girl in here, by the window?" He asked, frowning. Drunken stupor and built up emotions radiated off of the group and Dani debated on whether or not to ask them to leave. She had a feeling though that even if she did, they wouldn't listen. "U-Uhm, no? Just me...How can I help you?" The group grumbled some and Dani was vaguely aware of a commotion going on in the kitchen as Eva ran about for somewhere to hide. "Hey! You can't be in here!" Someone shouted. The man who had spoken up before frowned even deeper, looking towards the kitchen. "Yeah? You said you were the only one in here? Who're they yelling at in there?"

Danielle swallowed some and smoothed her hands against her apron, simply shrugging her shoulders. "What's it matter to you? Now, are you going to eat something or do I have to ask you to leave?"

Strange woman is probably a mild term to refer to Evangeline. She was all kinds of things. Strange behavior was going to be the least of Danielle's problems. She did hear her objecting to Eva going into the kitchen, but that wasn't going to stop her at this point, especially with the obnoxious ex making his way inside the diner. The first one to spot Eva back there was the dishwasher. He looked up surprised, thinking he had gotten caught on his cellphone again. Quickly that only turned to complete confusion as he wasn't sure who she was, what she was doing back there, and what he was supposed to do about it. The only cook left on shift for the evening made immediate objections to her presence in the kitchen as she dashed passed the kid and away from the swinging door. He raised such a ruckus that Eva quickly went to him and covered his mouth, him flailing back a little in surprise, muffling his further objections.

"Shh, he'll hear you!" she whispered urgently. She didn't seem like much of a threat, so he stopped trying to object long enough to realize she was likely hiding from someone out there.

At Danielle's denial that anything was amiss back in the kitchens and that Eva was not there, the guys were certain their friend had been mistaken. One bumped him on the arm, "Let's get out of here, man. She ain't here."

But the noise came from the kitchen and suspicions were roused once more. A few more frowns followed suite from their leader and stared back at Danielle. He didn't answer her for a moment, both to register the situation and to decide what to do. In his pause, he slowly breathed in deeply, almost as though he was smelling the air more than he was trying to calm himself, because this had no affect on his determined mood. Finally he smirked then slurred his response, "Sure, we'll eat." They walked right in and helped themselves to a table of their own choosing. "Four coffees and a shit load of mozzarella sticks." He was certain she was here, but if she wanted to play, fine; he would wait her out.

Back in the kitchens, Evangeline, the cook, and the teen were listening quietly. Eva had hoped he would just leave. As amusing as she found his stupid behavior the times she happened upon him while out and he acted like a jealous lover, she just wasn't in the mood for it tonight. Sighing, "Crap."

Danielle couldn't help but notice the queer way he seemed to sniff the air. It was a calming technique that she often had to fall back on but the way he went about it seemed almost animal-like. It sent an uncomfortable chill up her spine and she made her way quickly into the kitchen to gather the coffee the leader had requested without bothering to write the order down. Once behind the kitchen doors, Danielle leaned heavily back against it, wondering why her legs were shaking so bad. Sure this was L.A. and she had come across many a sketchy folk in her day, but none she could remember having frightened her so badly. Mirroring the deep breath she had witnessed the man do earlier, she composed herself some and made her way around the corner to talk to the cook.

In her fright, she had nearly forgotten about Eva, and stopped when she saw the young woman standing there. Blinking mildly, it took her a moment and she frowned. "Can't you ask your boyfriend and his groupies to leave?" She asked, tucking some of the loose strands of hair behind her ear. The cook and dish washer boy looked between themselves and then at Eva, slowly starting to put two and two together. "I don't want to have to deal with any trouble they're going to stir up." It wasn't even a question of if they were to Dani, it was when. The more she thought about it, the more she realized that the queer, predatory vibe she had gotten from the leader had also been coming from the others as well. What kind of person naturally gave off that kind of aura? No one any good. Who had this strange, but seemingly harmless woman gotten herself aligned with?

"Also...Verl, can you start up on a batch of mozzarella sticks? Make it a large one..." Moving her attention from the young girl to the order, she started to go about making a fresh batch of coffee for the men. She hoped it brewed fast, she had a feeling that they weren't the type to react well to being kept waiting.

So badly Evangeline wanted to peek and see what was going on. She had hoped he would just drop it and go. She wasn't afraid of him, but she just didn't feel like dealing with him either. Had she seen him sniff the air like that, it would have given her another odd behavior to tuck away and add to the list of strange things she had seen him do in her short acquaintance with him. Acquaintance was likely a more accurate term than boyfriend, since it had been a short, two-months relationship. But he seemed to be quite attached very quickly. And that was something Eva just didn't want. Attachment. She had moved on quickly enough, but him? Nope. He just seemed to be turning up often.

The kitchen door opened, and having been lost in her thoughts, it made Eva jump a little. She tried not to grin at her own reaction, knowing it tended to upset people when she wasn't properly upset about things. Poor Dani though. She could tell just with her expression of relief at being inside the kitchen, they had decided to stay. Crap. The hint of any grin she might have had went away when she saw Danielle becoming upset. Not that this was her fault, but he was certainly staying because he wanted to be a prick about it.

"Ex-boyfriend," she emphasized. "And not really. He wouldn't listen to me whether I was nice or mean about it." At this point, there wasn't really much she could do on her own. At least not with him. Others might be easier to convince with a little honey, but him? No. He just wanted what was on his mind. "I could ask him to leave with me."

It wasn't really a suggestion or a question. It was a statement of fact: she could do this. But would she? Slipping her phone out of her jacket pocket as Dani was making coffee and the other young lady began the mozzarella sticks. She typed in a bit of text and hit send, sending the message to her cousin/boss; he would know what to do with that. Putting the phone away, she shouldered her purse and smiled at Dani. "Well, I'm off to drag that jerk out of here. Not sure that'll clear them all out, but if he's gone, the others are more easily manageable." There, that should do it.

Dani glanced every once in a while towards Eva as she gathered two pairs of mugs for the men, setting them out in a line so she could pour them quickly. A slight frown touched her lips when the strange girl suggested she leave with the ex-boyfriend. While the girl had been slightly troublesome, she didn't exactly want her to leave with the brute in the lobby. What if he hurt Eva? Then how would Dani feel. "Like trash," She muttered to herself, shaking her head. The determined way she slung her bag over her shoulder though discouraged Dani from suggesting any other option. Short of calling the bar tender across the street, there was really none. And aside from being slightly rude they hadn't done anything to warrant the dismissal. Leaning heavily back against the counter, she rubbed tiredly at her eyes.

"Are you going to be okay?" She asked after a moment or two with a deep sigh. "He wouldn't hurt you or anything?" Removing her hands from her eyes, she looked over at Eva. Unknowingly, she pulled her lip between her teeth in a hesitant gesture, taking the weight off of one foot so she could bounce it from agitation. The dish washer boy had stopped doing his work once again, but this time he was only staring at Eve and Dani; not the blasted little phone he always was on. Verl was cooking away as usual, not too phased by Dani's fried nerves. She usually hid back here when there was more waiting staff and was getting over whelmed with the day and costumers. The addition of Eva was new though.

A loud beep sounded behind Dani and she started, grabbing the counter behind her. A light curse left her as she realized it was the coffee maker sounding that it was halfway done. Smoothing a hand over her chest to still her rapid heart rate, she turned around to peek at the progress, sighing some. This was turning out to be the longest three minutes of her life.
