Finished [Erithis - The See] An Empire of corruption and single-mindedness

Come wind or storm, I'll cut it down.
  • A sigh left Siegfried's lips as he steadied himself, standing up straight and shaking his legs briefly. The rustling of leaves, the sound of the wind, the sky peaking through the canopy of leaves over them, the sun, the clouds—it was simply that and nothing more. Things that matter. Things that don't. How many animals are now sleeping and waiting for the night, how many caterpillars have formed a chrysalis to prepare their new bodies and how many animals are enjoying the scenery of the day? These weren't things that concerned Siegfried. Yet, they were better off than these people and he didn't understand why, but he found that funny.

Again, Siegfried would be impressed by Ceylan's use of magic and how resourceful he was. His tail was wagging again... Siegfried moved back to the front and before he could begin walking a bit ahead, Ceylan beckoned him. Moving over to him and seeing as the bishop was dwarfed compared to Siegfried, he'd subtly lower himself to better listen to him. "Ah." A sound left Siegfried's thoughts, Ceylan was indeed still a mortal and thus constant use of such powerful spells was exerting his energy.

Siegfried leaned down and cupped his hand beside his mouth to whisper in Ceylan's ear. "Ease yourself. You can rely on me, Ceylan." He'd then give Ceylan a thumbs-up and a smile. One of the children at the orphanage often made that gesture when someone asked her to do something. He'd hoped this would reassure Ceylan. He didn't like seeing him so worried, the people they were to protect would like it less. Despite that, Siegfried was happy that he could be of help. "I will make the same wish on every dandelion I see. Surely then, it will come true." Siegfried said in regards to Ceylan's earlier statement. They were probably better off if nothing impeded them in the first place.

After the last of the rubble was cleared and the road ahead lay open, Ceylan didn’t stop there. The villagers, still standing at a safe distance, watched as the cleric calmly gathered the belongings that had been scattered during the ordeal. His magic once again came to life, the subtle glow of his Holy Back-pocket enveloping their items and gently storing them within his pocket dimension. It was a surreal sight - bundles of clothing, tools, and small crates of provisions disappearing into the magical space with a quiet hum. Once their path was clear and their belongings safely stored, Ceylan gestured to the group to follow as he prepared to lead them once again.

The journey resumed with a quiet sense of triumph. The weight of the road behind them was balanced by the anticipation of what lay ahead. Hours passed under the canopy of trees until, at long last, the sprawling village of Eraza came into view. Nestled between the thick forest and the rolling plains beyond, Eraza stood out with its timbered structures, thatched roofs, and cobblestone paths. The village itself, home to around five-thousand villagers, sprawled across a natural basin, with sturdy wooden walls encircling its perimeter as a defense against the wild and the ongoing war.

The villagers trailing behind Ceylan and Siegfried began to stir with excitement and relief. Tired as they were, the sight of the village lifted their spirits. They whispered among themselves, the tension from the long and arduous journey visibly lifting from their shoulders. Mothers clutched their children closer, and the elderly exhaled deeply, grateful that they had made it without loss or further danger.

They were safe - safe because of the joint efforts of both Ceylan and Siegfried, whose unrelenting vigilance had guided them here. The two figures had ensured the group's survival, and now, with Eraza in sight, their journey seemed complete.

But before the group could enter the village proper, they encountered a sizeable garrison posted just outside the village walls. Fae archers, soldiers, and mages, their expressions stern, barred the way. The guards - elves and other fae humanoids, standing in formations of a dozen or more - raised their bows and staves as the group approached. The air around them buzzed with magical energy, and a sudden, almost imperceptible wave of magic washed over the travelers.

Ceylan, Siegfried and the others felt it like a gentle pulse, spreading across their bodies. A Fae mage stood at the front, her eyes glowing faintly as she cast Appraisal, of surprisingly high-grade, upon the group. Her gaze swept over each one of them, and for a tense moment, the archers tightened their grips on their bows, awaiting the results.

The mage’s glowing eyes faded as the spell concluded, and with a quiet nod to her comrades, she spoke in a calm but firm voice. “There are no humans among them.”

A collective sigh of relief passed through the garrison, and the tension in the air began to dissipate, though their guard remained raised. The archers lowered their bows slightly, while the soldiers in front, still wary, stepped forward.

“What business do you have at Eraza?” one of them - a Fae soldier with sharp eyes and intricate armor - asked, his voice carrying a tone of both curiosity and authority. The villagers behind both Siegfried and Ceylan shifted uneasily, but waited for the answer, knowing the safety of their long journey now hung in the balance.

He was a tad surprised when Siegfried went all the way to lean down to reply. And had his pole-arm always been so long and smooth looking? That said, the doggo was relieved to hear Siegfried saying he could rely on him. Honestly, it was rather odd. For someone he'd come across so recently to sound so reliable and trustworthy. “Perhaps the gods have made us cross paths.” That would certainly explain how someone relatively odd, unknown and appearing without much reason or indication, could still manage to make him feel at ease as much as now. He laughed a tad, at the last bit. “Surely then, it will.”

As they continued, Ceylan relied on Siegfried to lead. His senses dulled by his weariness and tiredness. When he saw the signs of a village, he felt oddly blessed. Had they really made it? That feeling of last-minute doubt. The fear of things having gone too well started to creep over him. With every step closer, it felt like something was about to go horribly wrong. The villagers got more excited, but him himself only got more weary.

Even so, he'd calmly approach the garrison. The appraisal washing over him gave him sigh of relief. He had many titles to his name, the knowledge of which might make one more inclined to hear him out. It seemed the villagers waited for them to do the talking. So he garnered some of his remaining energy.

“The people of Erithis asked me help guide them away form the dangerous frontline of the ongoing war, to the safety of Eraza. They are weary and have lost most of their belongings, so, in their name, I ask you to please extend your hand to them and offer them a place to stay. I would hope that as I, a relative stranger to these lands, have aided them, you would aid them all the more.” He'd ask, using some of his remaining energy to try sound more inspiring/convincing (Preach E).

“Of course, should you allow them in and allow me to rest, I will do what I can to provide healing to the villagers of Eraza.” He'd add. He was hoping for his [Blessed Fortune] to help him through this last leg of the journey.

Sharing the burden would surely dull the blade.
  • Siegfried was glad to find that nothing else seemed to come and impede their way. He made an effort to be especially focused since Ceylan expressed his exhaustion. Nothing of ill intent was to befall Ceylan and the people he led. Ceylan was a bishop and thus his words held weight when they mentioned the gods, or so Siegfried would believe. Thus, if their meeting had been charted by the gods and it was predestined, then Ceylan must be an especially important person. Hence, the people whom he chooses to aid must be especially important as well.

Siegfried held his head high and straightened his posture; staring straight ahead as they approached the village. Siegfried saw how the mage seemingly appraised the entire group. If they did that, he saw no reason why they had to explain themselves further. Could they not see how excited the villagers were to be here? How some of them were so gaunt and forlorn and exhausted? It was more than obvious that they sought refuge and a hearth.

What troubled Siegfried most was seeing Ceylan step up with what little energy he hadn't. Ceylan seemed so feeble and yet still mustered the ability to calmly explain the story of the villagers. Siegfried stepped closer and gently put a hand on Ceylan's shoulder as an offer of reassurance, with his subtle smile fading into a lack of expression as he addressed the soldier. "All they seek is shelter and a safeguard from the war." His hand left Ceylan's shoulder and gestured to the villagers, "You are all the same people for you share the same adversities; thus you would surely want to lighten the burden as it would only lighten your own." Siegfried added. However, he believed all that Ceylan said was more than sufficient.

As Ceylan spoke, his words, though weary, carried the weight of sincerity and the truth of his cause. His soft voice, though tired, echoed with a gentle, almost divine strength as he explained the plight of the villagers who had come from Erithis. His plea for shelter and mercy stirred the Fae soldiers, especially as the signs of the villagers' exhaustion and desperation were clear to all. Some of the villagers had dropped to their knees, hands resting on the dirt, barely able to stand from the weight of their journey. Mothers clutched their children closer, and elderly fae folk leaned on makeshift walking sticks, their faces drawn and tired.

Ceylan’s humble yet fervent speech struck a chord with the garrison. The mention of his willingness to offer healing—a gesture of kindness in the face of war—was met with a murmur among the soldiers. They exchanged glances, some of their hardened expressions softening. It was clear the bishop had touched something within them, a reminder of shared humanity, or perhaps, in this case, shared kinship between the fae folk. The burden of war was something they all felt, and the sight of refugees in need of protection resonated deeply.

Siegfried, standing tall beside Ceylan, added his voice to the plea. His presence, commanding and composed, only added to the gravity of the request. His words, clear and direct, reminded the soldiers that the people before them were not so different from those within the village's walls. They were all bound by the same struggle—the looming war, the ever-present danger—and thus shared the same responsibilities. His calm demeanor and subtle gesture of reassurance toward Ceylan painted a picture of unity and strength, making it hard for the garrison to ignore the necessity of their aid.

The Fae soldier who had asked their business shifted uneasily. He looked at the mage who had performed the Appraisal, seeking silent confirmation. After a moment, the mage gave a small nod, confirming that there was no threat among them.

The Fae soldier let out a quiet sigh and spoke. "We understand your plight," he began, his tone softened, "and Eraza is not without mercy." He looked toward the gates of the village, then back at Ceylan and Siegfried. "These are difficult times, and resources are scarce, but..." His eyes lingered on the worn faces of the villagers, their hollowed eyes filled with hope as they looked up at the gates of Eraza.

"You may enter." His words were followed by a gesture toward the gates, and the garrison slowly parted, allowing the group to pass. "Seek shelter where you can. Our healers and provisions will be stretched, but I am sure your assistance will be welcomed." His gaze returned to Ceylan, a silent acknowledgment of the help he had offered to provide.

As the villagers began to move forward, a wave of relief washed over them. Some wept quietly, others whispered prayers of thanks, while a few simply stood in stunned silence, unable to process that they had truly made it. The sight of Eraza’s wooden walls, now open to them, was a promise of rest, safety, and a future—no matter how uncertain the road ahead might still be.

Siegfried and Ceylan, though weary themselves, could sense the gravity of this moment. The villagers had made it, and their safety, at least for now, had been secured. They had achieved what they set out to do, and in the faces of those they had saved, they saw not just relief but a glimmer of hope rekindled.

Inside the village of Eraza, the weight of the ongoing war was palpable, though not as oppressive as it had been near the borderlands of Erithis. The village was considerably larger, with a population of roughly five thousand, and its scale was immediately evident upon entering. Tall wooden palisades surrounded the settlement, giving it a sense of both protection and containment. Large watchtowers dotted the perimeter, where vigilant Fae archers stood guard, ever watchful for threats from afar. Their presence, while reassuring, reminded all of the danger that lingered not too far from the village.

The village itself was a mixture of old, sturdy structures and newer, hastily constructed buildings. The older houses, mostly built of timber and thatch, had a distinct Fae architectural style—graceful curves and natural elements, blending seamlessly with the surrounding environment. Vines and moss crept along the sides of the homes, and colorful wildflowers grew in patches by the doorsteps, remnants of more peaceful times when Eraza was a place of tranquility and beauty.

In stark contrast, newer buildings were more functional and utilitarian, constructed with a focus on defense and necessity. These were mostly barracks, supply depots, and temporary shelters for those displaced by the war. These structures were simple, angular, and often crowded. Many of them were built in small clusters, housing refugees from other villages who had fled the advancing armies. The sight of families huddled together, makeshift homes lining the streets, was a sobering reminder of how the war had stretched even Eraza's resources.

The village square, once likely a place of gathering and celebration, now served as a staging ground for the village’s defenses. Soldiers marched in tight formation, Fae of all kinds—elves, gnomes, halflings, and other fae folk—wearing worn armor and wielding weapons that looked well-used. The air was filled with the clang of metal, as blacksmiths worked tirelessly to repair weapons and forge new ones for the fighters on the frontlines. Despite the preparations, there was a grim efficiency to it all. These people had been at war for long enough to know the cost, and there was little fanfare, only the quiet determination to continue.

Eraza’s market area, though still operational, was much quieter than it once must have been. Stalls that once sold colorful fabrics, rare spices, and crafted goods now offered mostly practical wares—dried meats, hardtack, healing herbs, and whatever few supplies could be spared for trade. The villagers moved through the market with hurried steps, eyes cast downward, as if trying to avoid the reality of the war that was slowly encroaching on their lives. Children, too young to fully understand, ran through the narrow streets, their laughter bringing fleeting moments of levity before being quickly hushed by concerned parents.

In the far corners of the village, several makeshift infirmaries had been set up, where the wounded from nearby skirmishes were being tended to by Fae healers. The scent of herbs and poultices filled the air, mingling with the faint smell of blood and sweat. The groans of the injured and the quiet conversations between healers were constant, adding a somber undertone to the otherwise bustling activity in Eraza.

Yet, for all the tension and strain, there was still a resilient spirit in the air. The people of Eraza were accustomed to hardship, and despite the war, life continued. Some villagers gathered near the central well, chatting in low voices, exchanging news, or sharing what little food they had. A few elders sat on benches near the village’s small chapel, whispering prayers to the Spirit King, hoping for protection or guidance in these trying times.

At the edge of the village, the fields that once likely provided much of the village’s sustenance now lay mostly fallow, with only a few patches of crops still being tended. Those fields had been abandoned in favor of defensive fortifications, and many of the younger men and women who would have worked them had been conscripted into the war effort. What crops remained were closely guarded, a precious resource in a time of scarcity.

Despite its larger size and relative safety compared to Erithis, Eraza was a village on edge. The war was always in the background, a constant threat that could one day arrive at their doorstep. Yet, amidst the uncertainty, the people of Eraza carried on, maintaining a fragile balance between survival and the remnants of their former peaceful lives.

Admittedly, the first real sign of how 'on-edge' he'd been this whole time was when Siegfried would notice him jump a little as a hand was suddenly placed upon his shoulder. The tension that'd found its way into there almost strong enough to be felt by mere touch. It'd quickly vanish, perhaps through trained practice, but the man himself might've not let it go unnoticed.

“Thank you.” He spoke, upon being told they were to be taken in. His tail displaying a tired, but notable, wag. He looked around, having two places in mind. The first, he would find in the form of newly constructed buildings. Temporary shelters for those displaced. Using [Holy Backpocket] for what was hopefully the final time in a while, he would place down the belongings he'd carried all this time. “{Please, find yourselves a place to rest.}” He asked the people that'd followed him thus far. Switching back to Sylvan after realising he'd switched to Common at one point or another. Too tired to have noticed it up until now.

That said, he did have one more promise to deliver upon. He felt that, if he did not do so now, he might be too late to save those that would need it most. So he didn't wait, using the very last of his energy and his B-grade going off cooldown from the depths of his being to bring [Divine Healing] the the infirmaries he found, going to where the need seemed to be highest and silently offering a prayer.

Divine Healing - Light Affinity B, Magic B, Magic Range C, Magic Targets C, Magic Area of Effect C, Selective C, Healing B, Religion B, Energised B - Character channels the powers of the gods to heal significant injuries. - Grade Be - 3 Post Cooldown.

“<May the wounds of the wounded be closed. May their bodies be mended through the soothing powers of healing invested in me by the gods. So that they can brave the world anew and reinvigorated. So that they can broken bones be mended, their bodies restored. Maybe even the sting of death become but a slumber.>” His silent chant in his native tongue could be heard to those nearby, as a [Magic Circle] formed whilst he went through the motions.

Magic Circle - When a caster doesn't use the move action in a round they cast spells, recites spell incantation, uses a catalyst in hand, and performs gestures to cast a spell in combat, a full magic circle may appear under them or otherwise near them that enhances the spell's effectiveness by 1. In rounds where their Magic Circle is active, the Caster does not benefit from wearing armour.

As he finished, the catalyst he'd be holding started to feel like a heavy weight in his hands. The steps he was taking felt like they were weighted down as if his legs were made of iron and lead. Slowly, he'd try make his way to a quiet spot. “Please, if someone attempts to approach me without something of life or death importance, gently pressure them elsewhere.” He'd ask of the Mice Maids and Siegfried alike.

Having travelled far and wide, with many different people and to many different places, trying to find rest by leaning against a random building in a dark corner was nothing too strange to him. He could only pray he'd find it, as he sat down. A silent prayer, to the Spirit King, to the deities of peace, to those protecting the ones in need, was all he'd offer, as he sat down whilst the world around him seemed to slowly fade to the background, a combination of weary tiredness and magic-overused mana shortage finally manage to take a firm hold of him.

Rock a bye Ceylan in the knight's arms~
  • Ceylan's jolt unnerved Siegfried, it was just for a moment and almost in an instant he seemed calm again. It made Siegfried question if it even happened—considering Ceylan's penchant for a calm demeanour despite his inward emotions, it seemed Ceylan just quickly adjusted. For all Siegfried knew, a tempest could be stirring in Ceylan's mind.

The smile which left so rudely, after he faced the soldier would suddenly return to Siegfried's face like a sigh when the guard would grant them entrance. He smiled as if they were suddenly friends, "Again, thank you kindly." Siegfried would repeat what Ceylan said to the soldier. In the corner of Siegfried's eyes, he'd notice the subtle movement of Ceylan's tail. From the few times Siegfried had seen it, Ceylan's tail would show his delight excitedly; he doubted that Ceylan wasn't happy with the outcome and yet it swayed only once.

Now that they were finally entering Eraza, the nominal knight would feel himself proud. He was glad nothing shrew befell the group, he was there to guarantee the villagers of Erithis' safety; hence, he believed he did what he sought out to do quite well. Now he'd need to shift his priorities—after all, he prioritised first what Ceylan wanted and what the villagers needed. Now he'd need to prioritise what Ceylan needed, which was simply the things all mortal creatures needed.

All he needed was a bed to rest in and nourishment. Yet, before Siegfried could even suggest the idea to Ceylan, he went off and did his own thing—healing and prayer and all. Siegfried caught up with the bishop before long; yes, it was admirable of Ceylan, but it irritated Siegfried to no end to see him tire himself out to the point that he looked like a dried-up daisy. He looked as though a breeze would knock him over. The mere thought of it made Siegfried uncomfortable and he didn't know why.

Siegfried held out his arms, in case Ceylan would suddenly fall over for it seemed that he could at any moment. "I would gladly, but..." Siegfried responded, but seeing Ceylan lean against the wall and just recede to the floor felt... wrong. Very, very wrong. He did the most to make sure they made it to Eraza safely, even once they made it, he still extended aid despite his exhaustion; he deserved both the comfort and warmth of a bed at least.

Siegfried set his lance against the wall, he'd come back again for it later or simply make a new one. Siegfried squatted down to Ceylan and slid one arm around his back and his other under the crook of his knees, lifting him as gently as he could. He'd to find a place for Ceylan to rest that wasn't the cold, hard and dirty floor. Siegfried carried him to one of the shelters, one that was the least crowded and did not seem full. Having his hands too full to knock on the door (If there was a door), he instead shouted. "Pardon my impertinence—I need a bed for my friend, he's fatigued to no end!" He didn't shout too loudly. He didn't want to disturb Ceylan too much. In the end, if Siegfried couldn't find Ceylan a suitable place for him to sleep, then he'd just have to cradle him until his fully well-rested. It was better than the floor.

The villagers of Erithis, weary from their journey, found relief as they entered the village of Eraza. Their eyes, once filled with uncertainty, now glimmered with hope as they saw the temporary shelters set up for displaced people like themselves. Ceylan’s presence and soothing words encouraged them to settle into these new surroundings, offering a sense of calm after their long ordeal.

When Ceylan reached the infirmary, the scene was one of quiet suffering. The makeshift beds were occupied by the injured and ill, some with bandages hastily applied, others barely conscious from their ailments. The caretakers, overwhelmed and fatigued, looked up with surprise as the bishop approached. One of them, a middle-aged fae woman with deep-set eyes, hesitated for a moment before addressing him. “Are you... here to help?” she asked, a blend of hope and disbelief in her tone.

Ceylan’s response came with gentle reassurance, and as he began to recite his prayers, the soft, radiant glow of his healing magic spread throughout the room. The light, warm and soothing, bathed over the injured, mending wounds, easing pain, and bringing strength back to weakened limbs. One by one, the afflicted began to stir, eyes opening with newfound clarity, hands flexing as if rediscovering their own strength.

As the room brightened with the power of his divine magic, the fae woman’s eyes filled with tears. “Bless the Spirit King,” she whispered, almost in awe. “I never thought I’d see such kindness from one outside our kin.” Murmurs of gratitude spread through the infirmary, and some of the caretakers clasped their hands together in silent thanks.

Outside, a small group of elders had gathered, having heard of the bishop’s arrival and the miraculous healing within. Normally, the Fae were known to be exclusive in their reverence to the Spirit King, cautious about outside influences and proselytizing. Yet, seeing the compassion and power displayed by Ceylan opened a rare window for dialogue. One of the elders, an older fae with a weathered face and a staff adorned with charms, exchanged glances with the others before stepping forward. “Healer,” he called out, his voice carrying the weight of authority yet tinged with respect, “you have done a great service to our people. We are not accustomed to the ways of your gods, but... if you wish to speak, we will listen.”

Meanwhile, Siegfried remained vigilant, ensuring Ceylan’s well-being even after the healing was done. Observing how Ceylan pushed himself past the limits of his strength, he made sure to stay close, providing support. As Ceylan’s steps began to falter, Siegfried’s protective instincts took over, and he sought out a place for the bishop to rest.

A shelter worker, a young gnome woman with tousled auburn hair, noticed the situation and approached with a concerned expression. “He looks like he’s about to keel over,” she said softly, glancing from Ceylan to Siegfried. After a brief conversation, she gestured toward one of the less crowded temporary homes. “There’s a larger bed inside. It’s not much, but it’s clean and comfortable. You’re both welcome to use it.” Her quiet, understanding nod conveyed her appreciation for Siegfried’s care and Ceylan’s exhaustion. “Thank you... for everything you’ve done.”

As the atmosphere gradually settled, the people of Eraza found themselves in quieter contemplation, their initial wariness softened by the kindness they had witnessed. The doors to understanding had been nudged open, and even in a place as guarded as this, there was a newfound appreciation for those who sought to heal rather than harm. The opportunity was there, if Ceylan wished, to share more of his faith; the words of the elder had made that clear.

Things had been going by in a blur. He thought he'd been doing his usual thing of silently walking off to go sleep where it'd be quiet and undisturbed (after all, he could just heal himself should he wake up with aches or a cold), but at some point, it seemed the knight had started bringing him elsewhere? Too tired to resist, he just allowed it to happen.

It was only when he saw the elders that his mind returned to a slightly more awakened state. It seemed, even now, his duties were still not over. Even so, now was not the time for long preaching, powerful speeches, swaying arguments... He decided to keep his words simple, yet hopefully impactful. Using the tongue native to these people. “{I serve no one god or deity. The Spirit King and the world's pantheons all carry in them the ability to bring about good in the world. My faith is merely based on seeing such come to fruition.}” He'd smile gently, though tired. “{If any of what I did speaks to you, I would merely ask you to pay it forwards. May healing, peace and kindness fill the hearts of all of you.}” Perhaps it wasn't a traditional payer, but it did have a [Preach] element in it.

Preach – Religion B, Insight B, Empathy B, Connected B [Syncretist Church - Bishop], Energised B, Persuasion F, Inspire F – Character holds a passionate hand-tailored theological speech about faith. With those words spoken, however, he felt relieved when he heard someone offer a resting place. Seeing how he hadn't minded a place on the ground, slumped against some walls, an actual bed was surely not something he'd debate refusing either. He'd allow himself to fall upon it and was asleep before he'd even gotten fully onto it. As he slept, the Mice Maids would vanish to where they'd been summoned from, leaving just him and Siegfried.

Sorry to disappoint, no cuddling. :(
  • When one of the elders approached, Siegfried had first thought of greeting them. However, seeing that the elder was addressing Ceylan and remembering Ceylan's request not to let anyone disturb his sleep; made Siegfried want to tell the weathered fae off. When Ceylan seemingly awoke to respond to the elder, Siegfried would stop himself and instead make a rather distasteful expression similar to a scowl. An attempt at glaring. He wished he could understand what Ceylan had said at that moment.

Siegfried was glad that someone had come to step up, he looked down to the woman and smiled. "I believe he has indeed." The nominal knight would reply, glancing at Ceylan who seemed more than in a daze. "Thank you, thank you kindly." He'd say to her. Siegfried couldn't properly express his gratitude because he was carrying too much dog Ceylan. With his appreciation expressed, the nominal knight would turn away from the woman and hastily make his way to the shelter.

Once he was inside, he'd lay Ceylan on the bed as though he were something fragile and precious. Siegfried took the blanket and put it over Ceylan, before tucking him in. Siegfried sighed, brushing back his fringe before sitting on the floor at the side of the bed, resting his head in his arms as he looked at Ceylan; he seemed to drift off to sleep so easily. "Sleep best, dream better." He'd murmur. From what Siegfried had seen of this person, Ceylan would gladly do whatever in his power to help people; he enjoyed it—did he enjoy helping people or did he enjoy fulfilling his duty? Did he enjoy both? Was it truly genuine if you were helping someone out of a sense of obligation? These thoughts truly did not matter. Ceylan was asleep in a warm and comfortable bed.

He fulfilled all he sought to do at this hour but he could not depart yet. He found a bishop after all, whom he needed to consult with. He needed to wait for Ceylan to wake up on his own accord and in that time... What should he do? He could go fetch his lance, but he didn't want to leave Ceylan alone. Hence, he would just sit and stare at Ceylan until he eventually woke up. What kind of expression were you supposed to make when staring at a sleeping someone? Oh well. The comforts of the bed would soon affect Siegfried too, who would come to slumber with his head resting by the bed's side.

The elder’s eyes softened as he listened to Ceylan’s words, delivered in their native tongue. There was a simplicity to the bishop’s message, yet it carried a weight that resonated deeply. The room seemed to still, as if absorbing the quiet wisdom of his speech. The other elders, too, exchanged thoughtful glances, processing this unexpected show of unity and open-mindedness.

The older fae, gripping his staff, nodded slowly. “{Then you have shown us a path, even if it is not one we expected to tread,}” he said, his voice carrying a mix of respect and contemplation. “{May the Spirit King guide you, as you have guided us.}” He did not press further, recognizing the exhaustion on Ceylan’s face, and instead took a step back, allowing the bishop his much-needed respite.

As Ceylan was led away, the gentle yet resolute demeanor he had displayed left an impression on the elders and caretakers. Even after he was out of sight, they remained silent, contemplating his words. Eventually, the elder turned to the others and spoke quietly. “{Perhaps we should consider what he has said. Healing, peace, and kindness... It is not the way of the gods alone but of those who wish to build a better future.}”

Meanwhile, Siegfried’s patience and vigilance had not gone unnoticed. The young gnome woman who had shown them to the shelter lingered by the doorway, watching as he gently placed Ceylan onto the bed, treating the bishop with utmost care. She had rarely seen such tenderness, especially from someone with the bearing of a knight. As Siegfried tucked Ceylan in, the gnome gave a small, sincere smile.

“You really care for him, don’t you?” she said softly, stepping closer. “It’s rare to see someone look after another like that.” She hesitated, then added, “If you need anything, please let us know. You’ve both done so much already. We’re just glad we can help, even a little.” Her words were sincere, offering a sense of camaraderie in a place that had seen so much strife.

As Siegfried settled down beside the bed, the warmth of the room and the rhythm of Ceylan’s peaceful breathing began to lull him into a quiet stillness. The weight of the day seemed to ease, and despite his usual wariness, he found himself drifting off, leaning against the bed with his head resting on his arms.

The gentle murmur of the village outside continued, a soft, reassuring hum that spoke of life continuing despite the hardships they had all endured. In the corner of the shelter, a candle flickered, casting a warm, mellow glow over the two resting figures. For the first time since they had arrived, the village of Eraza felt a little less burdened, as if a glimmer of hope had been rekindled.

In the quiet of the night, Siegfried’s whispered wish, “Sleep best, dream better,” hung in the air, a simple but heartfelt sentiment that lingered long after he, too, had slipped into sleep. The elders and the caretakers, witnessing this brief moment of tranquility, found themselves smiling—a rare and precious sight in times like these. For now, there was peace, and for a little while, at least, that was enough.

And as day turned to night, the villagers of Erithis could barely believe their fortune. Two strangers, Ceylan and Siegfried, had arrived and delivered them from a peril they feared would bring about their end. Though the war between the See of Fae and the East Empire still raged on, the people of Erithis found solace in the safety and peace that now enveloped their village. They were alive, spared from despair, because of these two who had come to their aid.

The villagers would never forget their benefactors, whose compassion and courage had reached them at their darkest hour. Ceylan and Siegfried had offered their help selflessly, without any expectation of reward or recognition. And for that, the people of Erithis would always remember them—not just as passing heroes, but as a beacon of hope, a reminder that even in a time of conflict, kindness and valor could still prevail.

The village of Erithis, located in The See near its border with the East Empire, was in great peril. With the constant shifting of the battlefield, soon enough the war would be brought inside the village, if they didn't die from famine first. Thankfully, Ceylan adventured into the village, offering aid to get them to another Fae village called Eraza.
