The Duck Overlord
Even with Oliver’s reassurances, there was a part of Dani that regretted leaving him and Chess for a night. Maybe it was the lingering guilt of staying at school while Cassie and Andres weren’t here, or perhaps it was some leftover care from her days being Cesar’s lifeline. Whatever the case, she couldn’t help the guilt that gnawed at her chest at the thought of leaving someone alone, even if it was to spend time with the family she cherished so much. It would abate eventually, so for now, she would just have to accept that her brothers, cousin, and princesa needed her more. “I better not return to a dorm on fire,” she muttered.
She’d felt awkward about her earnest thank you, briefly distracted by someone bumping into her and trying to move out of their way, lest she be a nuisance. But that sense of awkwardness turned into something much more profound as he lifted her hand to his face and—
AS;LFKAJS;FLKAJSDFKAJSDFKLAJSDFLKA?
Did he say something? She couldn’t tell. Her cheeks flamed, and her heart went into overdrive, threatening to burst through her chest and leave an open cavity behind. What had just happened? What
the
hell?
Clearly, she was reading too much into it. Even Cesar would probably say so. Then again, he was the poster child for not noticing things—case in point: his entire relationship with Noemi—so maybe he was a bad example. But it wasn’t like she had anyone to truly talk to about this, and she wasn’t sure she wanted to. If it was up to her, she would keep this moment and these feelings all to herself forever, looking back on them after graduation to remember a time when someone made her feel like this. Would she even remember it when she was old and gray?
Okay, Danitza. Get a hold of yourself. You have class, remember? She was fine. This was fine. She was not losing her mind in the least. Ha. Hahaha. Hahahahahaha—oh God she was losing it.
Dani raised her hands to her face and slapped her cheeks, creating an audible thwack! that made her duck her head as other students looked her way. So, yes, she was a bit hunched over as she scurried into the dance studio and put her bag down in the designated spot. Letting out a breath, she felt the tension seep out of her now that she was here, in one of her favorite places on campus. Maybe she wasn’t singing as much anymore, but at least she still had her dancing.
She was about to begin her morning stretches to warm up her muscles when she finally heard it. A voice she knew. Or at least, she thought she knew it. There was a subtle difference between this voice and the one it reminded her of, but she didn’t have her power anymore to tell her exactly what those differences were. Besides, it was insane to think that the owner of the voice was alive. Like everyone else, she had died in the fire.
Then again… Madi was alive. Who was to say that another cousin hadn’t also survived?
No, she chided herself. That was asking for too much. She couldn’t have everything (even if she had next to nothing), and she certainly could not expect her best friend, her prima, to be back from the dead. There was no way. Absolutely no way—
Dani turned around and saw the gorgeous form of her cousin, Isobel.
All thought completely froze in her mind, the air around her becoming a vacuum of silence. It was her. It was really her. Tears welled in her eyes, her mouth falling open. Rather than the quiet tone she was used to, her voice took on full volume, surprising some of the other students around her. Danitza Mosquera hadn’t spoken above a certain volume in years, and certainly not while attending this university. But today, of all days, her voice actually reached sixty decibels, a record for her. “Isobel?”
She didn’t need confirmation. The sound was enough, and it always had been for her. Flying across the studio, Dani threw her arms around her cousin, clinging tightly to the younger woman as if letting go would mean she’d disappear all over again. How she wouldn’t be able to stand that. This was really happening, right? Her cousin was alive? “Te extrañé mucho.”
Never mind their grandmother and the way she’d always compared Isobel to Danitza, never mind that she’d spent the past several years wondering what Iso would do differently, never mind that her heart was broken in a thousand pieces from everything she’d gone through since losing her family. Right now, hugging the cousin she used to consider her sister, she felt more whole than she probably ever had. And she couldn’t wait to tell Cesar and Madi.
