  Spoiler: SECRETS

  — Grew up in Gilead, Mississippi with a father who was a preacher. Violet was often commented on by church-goers that she was an exemplary daughter. At age ten, her mother passes away, and her father turns to alcohol to cope.
  
  — Her interest in dance and acting took root early on, which ultimately allowed her to escape her abusive home at the age of 14 by enrolling and receiving a scholarship to Ennis Ballet Academy, a boarding school in Massachusetts. There are spots in her knowledge missing due to the less-than-well-rounded education she received at Ennis as the Academy emphasized the learning and retention of technique over traditional schooling. The school gets away with this due to its prestigious reputation and its private status.
  
  — During her high school years, Violet began to lie to and deceive the much more affluent and powerful students, riding off a rumor that she was related to a different Williams family from Mississippi. While she was not exactly a mean girl, her capacity to spread salacious rumors and lies earned her many debts and many friendships, allowing her to maintain this illusion. While not everyone believed her, it was difficult to find much evidence to the contrary as she only ever went by Violet, omitting the latter half of her name.
  
  — Between high school and university, Violet visits her father, who suffers a stroke while she is there. She abandons him at the hospital before he is discharged, and she earns a reputation in Gilead for being uppity and too good to take care of her pious father.
  
  — TW: abuse. The True Reason Why She Left: Her father incurred a brain injury after the pair get into a physical altercation. It is the first time since she had left for Ennis Academy that she is at home. This is three days into her return, and the pair had been getting along swell up until the evening where she comes home from a late lunch with an old friend to find him drunk. Not unlike the general opinion Gilead would come to have of her, Violet's father picked a fight about her new attitude and her recent successes. He does not physically harm her, technically, but he places a hand on her shoulder and attempts to push her down into a dining room chair. Violet tells him to stop, smacks away at his hand, and in return, he punches her, and she grabs the empty bottle of Jack on the table and thwacks it against his head. This moment happens in a flash, and it subdues her father. He goes to bed early, and when she checks on him later that evening to place some ice on the goose egg from the bottle, she finds him in the midst of a stroke. No one except the pair of them know about this altercation, and she leaves him in the hospital in the days to follow. She has not investigated his condition further other than to ensure that one of the members of his congregation, a woman he is now married to, took him home and nursed him back to health. Violet keeps tabs on her father now, but she has not spoken to him since she was 18.   — Grew up in Gilead, Mississippi with a mother who was a preacher. Violet was often commented on by church-goers that she was an exemplary daughter. At age 6, she developed her ability, which was partially what led her mother to abuse her, believing that this ability was preternatural and not caused by the Change, which had only occurred a few years prior.
  
  — Her interest in dance and acting took root early on, which ultimately allowed her to escape her abusive home at the age of 14 by enrolling and receiving a scholarship to Nové Dance Academy.
  
  — During her high school years, Violet began to lie to and deceive the much more affluent and powerful students, riding off a rumor that she was related to a different Williams family from Mississippi. While she was not exactly a mean girl, her capacity to spread salacious rumors and lies earned her many debts and many friendships, including the ones with Elvis and Ronnie, which led to her influencer career and later stardom.
  
  — Between high school and university, Violet kills her mother during a physical altercation, though no one ties her to the murder as she used one of her duplicated hands, which do not have normal finger prints.
  
  — By university years, she is a full-fledged celebrity, landing roles on the stage primarily but quickly working her way up in television and film.
  
  — Due to the uncertainty of her background, her engagement to Rémy was extremely prolonged until she had proven herself to his mother. It was ended due to similar reasons, in particular the discovery of her mother's death and the truth that Violet Williams is not an old-moneyed member of the affluent class. Due to the embarrassment of this, Violet is forced to sign an NDA, allowing the truth about her mother to remain undisclosed and for her career to be mildly saved.   MANDARIN PARADOX + LIES — Ultimately, Violet's current state has been caused by her own secrets and scheming, but she has not actually learned to stop doing that. In particular, she has no need to. The Mandarin Paradox is a thought experiment that illustrates that one will not do the morally correct thing if one can get away with the moral wrong. In essence, Violet's choices are made to a similar maxim: if she can get away with it, she will. I don't go into it very much, but obviously she's had to fabricate much in order to succeed at her lies. I would love to explore that further, especially if the truth threatens to come out.
  
  BETRAYAL — In an effort to make the sheet as clean and clear as possible, I don't dwell on the facts too much, especially as Vi is still, at the end of the day, in the wrong. However, I would say that she is, to a degree, a woman scorned. Her mother ostracized and abused her in her childhood, and their argument that led to her death is one relating to Violet's abilities and the fact that, at the time, she was dating Ronnie. This is what has given Violet her audacious spirit and unending drive.
  Furthermore, the engagement is perhaps the biggest way in which she has been betrayed. Rémy, while a lovely boy, consistently allowed his family to underplay Violet's significance in his life, and his breaking off of the engagement was more so caused by his family, given he forgave her and said verbatim that he would not have broken her heart if he had "any say in the matter." Her years of tending to their relationship, of completely changing her life path, and of doing things that she might not have approved of otherwise (such as the proposition she helped write and codify) were thrown away. Of course, she fails to see her whole life is setting people up for betrayal. I would love to explore further the way in which she is mildly cognizant of the fact that everything and everyone she touches is cursed, especially while she is lying still.
  
  THE AMERICAN DREAM — Much of Violet's motivation stems from the fallacy of the American Dream. She lies and hides facets to herself, such as her past and her abilities, for this end. In large ways, she has been very successful, and she almost "won," so to speak. However, these motives and her proud support of capitalistic structures has caused many in the media to speculate on the truth behind her engagement and if she ever actually loved Rémy. Beyond this, there is also the fact that she hasn't actually succeeded, that the American Dream is perhaps not the true and logical path she so wants it to be. I definitely would like to explore how her involvement in the heroes, especially on the political end, plays into this as well.
