Dragon Thieves

CloudyBlueDay

made up of opposites
In a world where dragons exist, two children, dirt-poor orphans who have to steal to survive steal two dragon eggs. Before they know it, they own two baby dragons, and on top of stealing for themselves, now they have to care for these two dragons. What could go wrong?

On the outskirts of Mithos away from the high walls and bustling streets of the central city nestled in the thick forest that surrounded the city stood an old cabin that had long ago been abandoned by it's former owner. The roof leaked and the windows had no panes of glass so the chilly winds cut right through, but it was shelter none the less for the two young teens and their most recent plunder.

Damius sat quietly near the small fire burning in the old, dirty hearth. He was a young boy, fourteen years of age who had been without parents for as long as he could remember. His brown hair was dirty as were his soft white cheeks, though his striking lavender eyes seemed to cut through all he filth. Nibbling on a stale piece of bread he watched the creature that had hatched out of one of the two large eggs they'd stolen. It was a dragon, a creature only the most privledged of people owned.

No larger than a cat the dragon wandered curiously around the small room it's white layered scales giving the appearance of feathers. The ends on it's wings were tipped with black as well as the feathery scales that fanned out on it's tail. Black and bright orange markings on it's serpentine face.

Damius smiled as he watched it pounce and chase a small beetle that buzzed around the room. "So what should I call you little fella?" At the sound of his voice the small dragon shifted as it craned his head to look back at Damius curiously.

Maya gnawed on her fingernails nervously as she sat next to Damius, her eyes fixed on the dragon eggs. "Maybe this was a bad idea," Maya said softly, hugging her knees to her chest. Usually she was all for getting into some trouble and stealing some stuff, but this time it was different. "They're dragons, Damius! Do you know how big they'll grow? I mean, I can deal with Fatso," Fatso was the fat cat that sometimes visited the two children and stole a bit of food. "But this..." She trailed off as one of the eggs began to hatch.

Maya stopped biting her nails and started to twirl her long blonde hair nervously. Only thirteen years old, and she knew no life other than the one she had right now, she had only ever dreamt of owning a dragon.

As Damius watched the absolutely adorable white scaled dragon stalk about the room, she glanced at him as he asked himself what he would call it.

"Why do you get the good one? I don't want the late bloomer!" She cried, but stopped as the other egg began to hatch.

This dragon was opposite to the first. Instead of a white body, it's scales were a deep dark black, the edges of it's feather-like wings and tail were white. It had white and orange markings on it's face, and rather then crawling out of it's egg like the other had done, this one stayed in it's broken shell, peering around the room curiously.

"Never mind. You can have that one." Maya said.

"Well we stole them, we can't really just toss them out. You know how the extermination squad kills any wild dragons they come across. I mean look at them Maya!" He said motioning to the two dragons. "I've seen dragons, but these look nothing like the dragons the riders and the royalty have. They are different."

At the sound of his voice the small white dragon pounced over towards him, slowly sniffing his dirty boots before leaping up into his lap before curling up. "See?" He said looking over at Maya. "They are our responsibility now. We'll just have to work extra hard to feed them now." Laying his hand on the dragon curled up on his lap he ran his fingers across its feathery scales. They were almost soft to the touch as if they were actual feathers.

"I think I'll call you Kozah." Said Damius a smile stretching across his face as the white dragon gave a soft chirp. He glanced over at the black dragon that had yet to crawl from its cracked shell.

"So what are you going to call it?" Asked Damius motioning with his free hand towards the black dragon.

"Okay, okay." Maya gave in. The little dragons were just too adorable to be killed by the extermination squad. She kept her gaze on the small black dragon, who stared back at her from the shell. "Different? You mean like.. Special?" Her eyed sparkled as she grinned widely. "You're right. They're different then most." She finally turned to look at Damius and let out a soft 'awhh' seeing the white dragon in his lap. "That's a nice name, Kozah." Then she turned her attention back to the small black dragon.

After one more look around the room, the shy little dragon finally mustered up the courage to climb out of it's shell. It crept towards Maya, taking terribly tiny steps, and Maya bit her lip excitedly and squealed as it put a clawed paw on her thigh gently. It stared up at her.

"Hi." She whispered. It gurgled in reply, and then jumped up into her lap. Maya's eyes widened excitedly and she beamed at Damius.

"Ohto. I'm gonna call him Ohto." Maya said as she gently stroked Ohto. His scales were soft but thick and hard, as if on the outside they were like feathers but the inside like rocks. Ohto purred happily.

Damius smiled softly as he watched Maya with her new dragon. "That's a nice name." He said cheerfully as he watched her pet Ohto. His mind began to wander then, four mouths were much harder to feed then two and the wild game in the region had practically been decimated by royalty. He could kill the occasional rabbit but that wouldn't do them very much good with two dragons.

He focused his vision on Maya once more. "We're going to have to figure out a way to feed all of us. Maybe some of the farmers along the southern road need some help with their harvest, being a theif is getting harder and harder with the royal guard executing any thief they catch."

They'd been stealing for as long as they could remember and he had always watched out for Maya, even taken a few fairly brutal beatings so that she could get away. He had always hoped that one day the gods would smile upon them and make their lives easier. The gods seemed to have a cruel sense of humor.

With a sigh he cradled Kozah and stood up as the small dragon shifted in his arms. "We'd best get some sleep, we've got work to do tomorrow or we'll all end up starving." He tossed Maya a short smile as he turned towards the second room of the cabin where they had two old and ragged beds.

Damius was usually the one that took care of all the heavy stuff - he was the one that said 'Maya, we're going to starve if you keep on feeding Fatso!' She was always the one that was making the mistakes for him to clean up. Although he tried to pretend that she was fine, Maya knew. She knew all the bearings Damius had took to protect her. She was going to show him now that she could handle this.

"Yeah.." Maya said softly, trying to come up with her own idea on how to get some food for all four of them. They could barely even spare any crumbs for Fatso anymore. But these were dragons. They were theirs and theirs only, and no one else was going to protect them or feed them or care for the poor little things. Much like her and Damius, in a way. Except that Maya and Damius were not dragons, and they were probably never wanted in the first place.

Maya nodded and stood up, cradling Ohto in her arms. He squeaked at the sudden change of position, as he had just gotten comfortable. "Sorry." Maya whispered as she carried him to the next room behind Damius.

She set Ohto down on her ragged old mattress and climbed in next to him. She lay on her side with Ohto in front of her so she could stroke him gently.

"Goodnight, Damius." Maya said through a yawn as she closed her eyes. Ohto yawned as well and laid his head down on the blanket, small claws scraping the already torn bed sheets to get comfortable before settling down.
