He wished he could be different.
๐“ฏeng had always enjoyed the dark, he coward in it hoping it would hide his insecurities and feelings - if he always seemed indifferent than he couldn't get hurt when those around him left him as they evidently would, like his mom had. . .like he had left every person who ever tried to have a connection with him. Not even as a child did Feng believe monsters lurked under his bed at night, he knew that the only monsters that preyed on others were human. The kind of humans that snickered under their breath as he walked by, the kind that cut him with their sharp tongue. Monsters weren't horrible creatures, deformed and ugly; they walked beside him hiding in plain sight tearing at his flesh under he boiled under the pressure unable to contain his own outburst, Feng felt bad for those who still believed in the boogeyman. . .they had no idea who smiled in their face. He often wondered if he was like the monsters he came to know so well while growing up, Feng liked to believe his actions were justified in their own way but then again, didn't everyone? Feng had believed that there were no inherently good or bad people just those trying to get by. Not many people really knew him and he liked it that way, liked that he went unnoticed โ€” if he stood in a crowded room and screamed would anybody hear him? they never had before. He was sure they never would .
His mental state had been a mess leading up to the last night he spent with his most recent โ€˜partnerโ€™, he teetered the edge for far too long before he took the plunge and nearly broke his neck. He couldnโ€™t quite remember much besides the hot, crimson liquid covering his palms and of course the look on the manโ€™s face when he had recovered from the vicious assault Feng committed on him, that look was burned into the back of his eyelids. So, Feng did what he knew best. He ran.
The last month after his disappearance dragged on lifelessly, he got help and even some medication. It made him feel like shit and he could barely get his dick up but his therapist had said nothing good can come without sacrifice - he thought that was the stupidest thing he had ever heard. . but heโ€™d been able to get more than 2 hours of sleep a night and so he stuck to it even if it made his dick limp and his hands shake which made it impossible to hold his tattoo gun steady without a concoction of coffee and valium. He was tired and more anxious than he had ever been. The sliver rings lining Feng's fingers drummed along the steering wheel of his shitbox of a car, it stalled when the weather was too cold and the radio cut out if he drove over a pothole but it got him from point A to point B and when he couldnโ€™t find a place to crash the backseat was comfortable enough. He had tried to ignore the news as much as he could, he was never really one to sit down and watch it anyways but the constant news articles pinging on his phone made it incredibly difficult to brush off. . .something was happening and while the news seemed to be vague in the reports they let out to the public it was obvious it was something they could not control. Finally, the clanking noise of machinery came to a halt as Feng pulled into the parking lot of a cafรฉ, that truthfully, looked far too hipster to have a decent cup of coffee but desperate times called for apparently deeply desperate measures. It didnโ€™t take long for him to exit the shitbox and slam the door behind him (you really had to slam that shit, otherwise it didnโ€™t latch) before entering the shop reluctantly.

Jae-ha was someone who was used to being alone. Sure, she had only moved from her home country a mere four years ago. But even at her home she was alone, her family would take every excuse they could to not have to spend time with her. She was commonly just home alone or at parties to pass the time. Now, she's in a new area, new country, with no connections whatsoever. It took her over a year to even try and start learning the language since she had an interpreter at her college for her freshman year. So, eventually she had to learn English. Yet she still never talked to anyone to try and learn it faster. She just turned to watching shows and taking online courses for it. Now once she made it to her last year of undergrad, she had somehow landed a pre-med internship at a clinic nearby. So now, on top of her classes and working at a local cafรฉ, she works as an intern at a clinic. At this point in her life, she was no where near having many friends. Maybe one or two acquaintances here and there and someone she may consider a friend. But her English still wasn't perfect, therefore she didn't have the right amount of confidence to actually pursue many friends yet. She talked to her coworkers and classmates, but that was about it. As many times as she had tried to put herself out there, it never ended well. Some people just aren't nice, and she knew that.

Everyone has those days where they wake up and wish they never did. Or, when they wake up, they just don't want to go anywhere or do anything. That was what Jae-ha felt this morning. It's a rare occurrence, but it still happens every once in awhile. It set an uneasy feeling in her stomach, since she only ever feels that way when something bad happens to her. Like when she got kicked out, failed her exam, or when she got pulled over for speeding. She went through her day cautiously, yet tired at the same time. Today was a day off from her internship, so after her classes finished she went straight to her cafรฉ job. She leaves a uniform in her bag for scenarios like this one. So here she was, sitting at her usual table with books scattered atop it. She spent her two hours of freedom between classes and her shift to study her English classes a bit better. She hated studying it, but it had to be done sooner or later.

Sasha's mind was one hundred percent elsewhere as he walked down the sidewalk, thinking about anything and everything aside from where he was going. What he wanted to have for lunch, what he wanted to have for dinner, where his brother had gone, how to understand even half of what the people around him were saying. Part of him wished he were still at home, in his bed with his books and puzzles- with Dakho, because the older male was really the only human interaction he got aside from the occasional exchange with the owners of the animal shelter. It was a scary place when you barely spoke the language, even for an adult. Even more when you hardly knew how to be an adult in the first place. He'd gotten better over time, and unless you really observed him, you might not even notice that Sasha lacked a lot of common knowledge, and social skills. He was friendly, and kind to everyone, but there was little in terms of knowing how to interact with people.

He'd decided against taking his bike today; it wasn't too hot out, and it'd been a while since he'd last had a chance to walk around outside. The shelter was relatively close to where he lived, only about a 30 minute walk if he went at a leisure pace. Sasha wasn't entirely sure what you'd really call his job- sure, he worked at a shelter, but he had little to do with rich families wanting dogs, and the apartment owners wanting a cat to keep them company. Not speaking the native language put a pretty big limit on what he could and couldn't do. Most of the time, Sasha stayed in the back with the animals; He kept their crates clean, the animals fed, and made his rounds countless times a day to make sure each animal was getting enough socialization. Sasha had gotten ready by himself today, waking up with about an hour before he had to walk out the door. He'd even tied his shoes by himself- a small victory but one he couldn't wait to tell Dakho about, and one that left him absolutely glowing with pride as he'd walked out the door that morning.

Maybe fifteen minutes later, Sasha walked through the front doors to the shelter, offering a bright smile and a bow to the people at the front desk. He said a quick "Hello, good morning!", and ducked into the back room to prepare himself for the day.

removing the single earbud from his ear, dakho pushed the door open of the workplace where he had spent the last four or so years of his life. the familiar aroma of freshly brewed coffee, cinnamon buns, muffins and all other sort of sugary delicacies filling his nose. a gentle scent, sweet and uplifting caused a stretch at the edges of his lips, forming into a faint smile. it wasnโ€™t to say that the young man loved this job, no. in fact, dakho had been banned multiple times from even taking a single step behind the counters and into the kitchen- the reasons he would never admit. far too embarrassing and honestly, he was simply glad they hadnโ€™t gotten him fired. but being a waiter is what dakho was good at, they had never needed him in the kitchen anyways (is what he often said to make his own self feel better). regardless of everything, the aroma of the cafe always tugged a smile on the young man's lips.

filling his lungs with a deep breath, dakho took in the pleasant scents and exhaled with a sigh. โ€œsmells devine as always, boss!โ€ he shouted, while closing the door. a finger gun pointing towards the boss in question. the loud action earned him a few looks from some of the customers sat in their tables and a disappointed, tired (of dakhoโ€™s bullshit) glance from the man behind the counter. while yes, the smell of baking sweets might have been to drool over, dakho's flattery were but a poor attempt at a distraction to the fact that he had ran late to work. โ€œyou're late." replies the patron, not falling for the false flattery. "again." he mutters. "just get to work dakho.โ€ is really all the man bothers to utter out before resuming his tapping on the cash register's screen. "you got it." proclaims dakho, adjusting the back pack on his shoulders as his feet lead him towards the small locker room, where he would proceed to change into a more fitting attire.

a wince escapes his lips as he raises his arms to change shirts, and dakho jolts to a stop in his tracks. his shoulders still ache from the night before. and dakho would lie if he said the fresh bruises on the side of his abdomen weren't making it particularly difficult to bend down to lace his shoes. or how much self control it was taking him to avoid itching the healing stitches on his right eyebrow, despite recalling jaeha's voice very clearly yelling at him to stop touching it if he wanted it to even come close to healing. all in all, the young man was tired- exhausted. but dakho needed these jobs- needed them if he wanted his younger brother to have a roof on his head. food on his plate and somewhere safe, where he could lay in his bed at night and sleep peacefully. dakho never wanted sasha to live with the insecurity of not knowing where he would spend his next night or what would his next meal be- if there was to be any. the same anxiety he lived through a few years back when his father had announced the heart breaking news to him. but dakho figures he had earned it. what kind of place was there in the family's foyer for a murderer like himself?

so the young man pushed through. pushed and pushed in hope for tomorrow to be better. waiting for a miracle. a ghost opportunity, one that would get him and his brother out of this shit soul eating routine. disregarding. ignoring. completely pushing the elephant in the room down that there was no hope for people like them. people at the bottom of the food chain. in the darkest of nights, to dakho, it truly felt like there was no way out. like they were held between four walls. no doors, no windows. that regardless of the decision one was to make, loss was inevitable. making a daring jump where you either fall in a lion's jaws or between a tiger's claws. that the only freeing option was something worse. yet, what could be worse?

but dakho was never one to enjoy lingering too long on tomorrow's problems. much preferring to live in the security of the present moment, where things weren't completely as chaotic, completely as unsure. where he was simply about to clock in his job and bring enough cash to get sasha and himself dinner for the night. and that's exactly what he did. the young man pushed the locker room's door open with one hand, and donned his apron with the other, wincing slightly as he adjusted it around his sore midsection, paying no more mind to it. his feet stepped into the room filled with the humming of conversations and the clinking of cups and saucers, hands reaching to grasp the notepad and pen from his apron, ready to start his shift. his eyes immediately looked in a particular corner in the cafรฉ, where he knew he would find the person who'd saved his ass more than once. it stretches a side smile on his features.

when she sits there, face hidden by a pile of more books than dakho has ever read in his entire life, he knows it's her. there's no one else in the shop that ever comes with as many. the young man grabs a croissant from the freshly baked ones that were just about to be displayed on the display counter and makes his way towards the woman- yes, he will definitely pay for it later (no, he will not). gently, he rests the small plate holding the bakery in front of her and pretends to get his notepad out, pen in hand, as if ready to write. "a croissant and a good excuse to be freed from your suffering," he said smugly, referring to studying. "anything else for the lady?"

Oh, but it was hard indeed to take her mother's hurtful comments with stride and duck her head away from the cruel gaze that peered down at her, instead Sofia took her loneliness to writing and drawing finding solace in her made-up characters solving complex mysteries and finding the love they deserved. At the age of 19, she had her first novel published winning the title of new york's best seller rather quickly followed by a trilogy equally as successful as her first. . . it was funny even than her mother couldn't muster even a small 'well done' instead Sofia listened to her mother criticize how a career in the medical field would be more far lucrative than her silly stories 'you always did have that crooked nose of yours in the clouds' she would often cough out but Sofia didn't mind not even then, no, she mostly just felt sorry for her mother such a bitter woman had soured even further when her husband had passed when Sofia was 13 years old. Her father, although he could be as dismissive as her mother, found enjoyment in his daughters creativity and would eagerly ask at the end of every week what stories she had created. Sofia would miss her father longer than she had known him, that she was certain of.
Even now as she sat at her desk, glasses sitting too far down on her nose bridge to provide any aid in her sight, she missed her father. While she had always been a solitary creature, preferring to sit in her home with a glass of wine to write or paint, she'd read a BuzzFeed article that outlined '10 top ways to boost work ethic' number 8 simply read 'get a pet'. Strangely enough, Sofia had never thought much about animals not that she wasn't a fan but her mother refused to allow such a thing in their family home. After 10 minutes of taking a quiz that was supposed to tell you the best pet that would complement you she had landed an a cat, she had bought all the necessities online and had them shipped to her address but quickly backed out in a panic once it had all arrived; she couldn't believe she seriously thought she could keep another being alive. Now, she wished she hadn't hesitated.
In that moment she decided, she pushed back from the wooden desk in front of her with purpose and stood up from her chair. Sofia pulled on her soft pink cardigan and grabbed her keys from the bowl that sat near her front door before leaving (making sure to lock her apartment door behind her), the closest shelter to her was about 20 minutes away and her hands shook around the stirring wheel of her car the entire time there even as she entered the building with a nervous smile her hands didn't let up not until she stuffed them in her pockets to hide them from the receptionist view โCats, uh, sorry โ€• can I see your cats?โž Sofia finally got out with an airy laugh.

jae-ha had her in earbuds to try and help block out the noise of chatter and the music the cafรฉ had softly playing. all she had playing was what she called her study playlist, consisting of nothing but musicals and punk-rock music. it was definitely an interesting taste, but that was honestly all she ever listened to. she tapped the tip of her pencil on her notebook as she read an english grammar book, taking the occasional note or two. when a plate with a croissant got placed in front of her, she promptly took out one of her earbuds to hear what the person was saying. she quickly recognized the face as the person who consistently shows up at her apartment door late in the night to be patched, dakho. but she hasn't called him dakho in awhile to be honest.

"This truly is suffering," she spoke gesturing to the assortment of books laid out in front of her. "-but is that really a good excuse? I doubt its even paid for knowing you." jae-ha's words were laced with a jokingly sarcastic tone as she spoke. she narrowed her eyes at the croissant, scaning it over quickly to make sure it wasn't messed with before grabbing it and taking a large bite out of it. before she finished chewing, she thought of something she wanted. "Ooh actually, can you be a doll and get me a shot of espresso? Thank you Steve!" for most of what she said, there was still food in her mouth. she did finish chewing before she stopped though, luckily only chewing while talking and not after. god forbid she eats without talking if someone is near her. she had a smile on her face as she thanked her coworker, not using his actual name but instead a nickname for him. it didn't make sense, steve being a nickname for dakho. but nor did her calling him jeff or eugene. "Oh, and I'm not paying for it either. You can treat me this time!" she said with a shit eating grin. immediately, she went back to studying with a small laugh as an attempt to avoid any back talk from him.

Sasha had been lingering just around the corner, peering none too subtly through the tall, rectangle window in the doorway. He was practically vibrating with excitement when he laid eyes on a woman that had just walked through the door. He'd never really been given much of a chance to interact with customers, but considering the fact that he was one of the few people in the shelter today, and those few people were currently busy, Sasha was hoping he'd have a chance to help her find what she needed.

His nose was just about smashed up against the glass as he stared at the woman and the receptionist, who briefly waved a hand in his direction and spoke a few words to the woman. Even if it wasn't, Sasha took that as his cue to come out from behind the door.

"Good morning!" He greeted her happily, face splitting into a wide smile. "Who are you looking for? Do you want dog or cat?" A little grammar error never stopped him- not that he really realized he'd made them in the first place. "You will follow me, I will bring you to them," Sasha spoke proudly as he turned on his heel to walk back where he came from. He paused in the open doorway, waving at her to follow him like he couldn't possibly wait another second. Sasha was already planning out how he was going to tell dakho all about his day when he got home.

It was weird looking back on things now.
โ„udith had, at one point, her entire life planned out. After high school her sports scholarship would have gotten her through university โ€•she'd finish with a degree in Kinesiology and her family would proudly watch her walk across the stage knowing she could do it all along despite her struggles with juggling her sports and education. Maxine, her little sister, would hug her in child-like glee beaming about how cool her big sister was. Maybe she'd finally build up the courage to come clean to Lydia about her feelings, her closest friend, to explain that all those glances were laced with something more. She'd been so close to that picture perfect ending she had dreamed about, that her mother promised her from the day she'd been adopted. There were many regrets in Judith's life and many of them happened on October 15th, she couldn't even remember what they were arguing about; probably something so childish but if she closed her eyes she could still remember the sound of rain pelting the windshield of the car โ€•"I hate you" her mother's face crumbled in despair, her sister's shriek at the bright head lights coming from the left of the car and then Judith woke up a week later. Her leg was broken and she had shattered three ribs, her battered body tethered to machines; her father sat beside her with bleary, sunken eyes. The nurses and doctors were quick to say she shouldn't blame herself, it could've happened to anyone, the roads were so slippery, the SUV that had collided with them couldn't stop in time, not in weather like that. But, her mother had looked away from the road the moment these vile words left her mouth. She had made her mother crash.
Her body didn't recover in time, she had lost her scholarship and would probably never run at the speed she once did, her father didn't speak much after that, not to others and certainly not to her. He was too kind of a man but she could tell by the furrow etched into his brow any time their eyes managed to meet he wondered "why you? why did you have to survive?" and he hated himself for it. She wondered that too.
The once, lively and warm, Tate home lost it's charm. The garden her mother tended to dutifully died and never blossomed again, her sisters pink bike she'd gotten for her 9th birthday rusted and fell apart on the driveway never to be rode again. The guilt never dwindled even four years later, it still clung to her shoulders and weighed them down nearly unbearably; Judith had gotten in contact with her half-sister after the younger girl tracked her down on a FaceBook page she forgotten about (the constant reminders of her life before the accident made her want to vomit) and that made the guilt worsen but at least it kept her from having to be home.

Judith turned slightly to peer at her baby sister, it was odd looking at her โ€• her nose slopped at the same angle hers did but rounded at the tip while hers sharpened, her dark eyebrows creased when she focused on something much like Judith's did but her mouth pulled down into a grimace giving her an unimpressed look; it only made sense after all they shared a father but knowing someone who looked so much like her and shared so many of the same mannerisms had only just came into her life was. . .a feeling she couldn't get used to. Cora shifted to look at Judith, her expression soured at Judith's stare โWhat?โž she scoffed out in exasperation before nudging the older girl with her shoulder and pointing her chin out towards the college football game in front of them, trying to draw her attention out there instead of her face. It had worked momentarily โNothin' I'm just- what are we even doing here?โž Judith questioned, she had avoided watching all kinds of sports since the accident but for her sister she'd do a lot; she'd get it right this time. Cora rolled her eyes, not believing she had to explain this again. She sat up straighter and pointed her red, painted nail down into the field of boys as if Judith could tell any of them apart from this distance โSee him? number 22 - that's Andrew. He's totally into me and I'm totally into him. He invited us to see him play, well, me but you're here for. . .moral support. Making sure I don't make any mistakes tonight.โž Judith nodded along to her story, not really caring about her sister's newest infatuation; they both knew once the game ended Cora would make an excuse to use the bathroom, disappear for the night like she typically did, Judith would go home alone and tuck her drunk father in on the couch. In the morning, he wouldn't ask her where she had been last night and she won't offer the information up either. They lived around each other now.

๐“ˆofia's eyes pulled towards the younger boy that was pressed up against the glass window to her right, she cracked a small smile at the sight before drawing her attention back to the woman behind the counter that droned out some information about the shelter โ€• she had spoken about the values of the shelter and how they strive to match all new pet parents with their ideal pet, something Sofia appreciated hearing. It seemed to calm the tremors in her hands for the moment, while this certainly was out of her comfort zone usually when ideas would make her mother rant in outrage it typically would benefit Sofia greatly; she had learned that rather quickly. Still, there wasn't much she could say badly about her mother Sofia was always the type of person who tried to reason with others flaws. In her eyes nobody was inherently bad at birth, their experiences molded them into who they turned out to be. . .or at least she hoped that was the case, the idea of having to come to terms with her mother truly just disliking her would be too much for Sofia.
Sofia thanked the woman with a thin lipped smile just as Sasha emerged from the back room clearly more than ecstatic to be of service to her, she found the energy he let off to be rather contagious which only further solidified that this was in the fact the right choice for her. The dark haired boy had a youthful look to him and his beaming personality which led her to the conclusion that he must've been at least a few years younger than her โGood morning,โž she greeted back in a soft, timid voice while pulling her hand from her pocket and offering it out to the boy for a proper greeting
โWell, I think I'm looking for a cat today. . .I've never actually owned an animal before so this is all really new to me.โž Even from her current position, she could hear the sounds of dogs and other animals somewhere in the far distance; it was over-whelming to know she was so close to her potential new friend. She paused for a moment, nearly hesitating before she urged her legs to move and follow the boy whom waited for her at the open door. โDo you get a lot of first time owners here?โž she questioned, her eyes bouncing around their surroundings as they moved deeper into the facility.

Reminders

kim daehyun
survivor

  • Drops of cold water poured down on Daehyun as he lathered soap all over his body. His heart was still racing from the intense workout he had just completed with Wen. It has been exhausting as usual as he struggled to keep up with the more muscular male. He appreciated the intensity of their routine even if his muscles didnโ€™t reciprocate that gratitude the following day. He had met Wen a few months ago, soon after he had moved to the city from his small conservative town in Virginia. He had bought his membership to the gym he was currently showering in and had asked the older male to spot him while he lifted. From there, Dae was won over by Wenโ€™s friendly exterior and the two hit it off as friends. From then, they would frequently hit the gym together and Dae would struggle to keep up with Wenโ€™s routine.

Daehyun rinsed the soap off of his body and stepped forward to allow the water to cascade over his hair. He hated leaving the gym feeling sweaty and always showered right after. They provided the facilities after all. After a minute, he turned the water nozzle to the right and the water shut off. He grabbed his towel and began to dry himself off. When he was dry enough, the male wrapped his towel around his slim waste and walked over to the next shower stall. He poked his head in and saw Wen. He knocked loudly so the other male would be alerted to his presence.

"Dude, hurry up. I'm starving." the half naked male whined. His eyes went from the back of Wen's head down south and just as quickly back up. A small smirk slowly spread across his thin lips. "Nice ass by the way." he teased, before darting off to his locker. Him and Wen were just friends. After all, the other male was going to be getting married soon. As for Dae, he wasn't into men. The image of Wen's body over the months of changing in front of each other was only seared into his brain because he had a good memory. Totally not because he was extremely attracted to the other man.

Growing up in a hyper conservative church, it had been taught to him from a very young age that homosexuality was a sin. There was no way around it. If you engaged in homosexual activities you were going to burn in hell. It was that simple. Yet for Dae, it wasn't. Deep deep down a part of Daehyun knew that he liked women and men but there was a strong part of him that could not accept it. He was strongly in denial about his sexuality because despite leaving the church, his entire worldview had stemmed from that belief system. It was something he was trying to work on but it was not a process that was easy to untangle.

The male removed his towel and slipped into his clothes. He was wearing a black oversized t-shirt, black shorts, and black sandals. He sat down on the bench and waited for Wen with an impatient pout. His stomach was rumbling and he wanted to eat.

the croissant, much like any other sweets from the bakery dakho often treated jaeha to, as a thanking gestures for the altruistic actions she offered him every night he knocked on her door, were very rarily paid for. not that the man purposely stole from the shop nor that he would care if he did, honestly. but when you pair a pretty face like his with charms that came to him so naturally, it often aided him getting away with things. in this case, it was his coworkers not denouncing his "theft" (which, really, were more about him forgetting to pay for it than anything else). and in the possibilty where he got caught? well, dakho genuinely thought it would be worth it. after all, jaeha had provided so much help to the man, with no real reasons as to why she should be. there was nothing for the woman to gain. no prize, no privileges. there was nothing else dakho could offer than his infinite gratitude. yet she still was there, at every random hour of the night as dakho stood behind the door with more bruises than he could count. handling injuries that weren't her responsibilty and allowing dakho to get back on his feet, which would eventually help him earn enough to go by. rinse, repeat. which in result helped keeping sasha safe. so in dakho's logic, jaeha helping him was jaeha helping sasha and for that, dakho believes he owes the woman. so if a croissant and a shot of expresso were among the few things dakho could bring, then bring he will.

but honestly, while dakho bent to most of jaeha's whims, something he always wondered was who the fuck was steve?

"dakho!" shouted the boss in a whisper, cutting dakho before he could even say anything in answer to jaeha. catching his attention in doing so, as his torso pivoted around to look at the older man, whom was portraying a midly annoyed expression on his features- was it related to dakho? (of course) probably not... right? (it was) surely something else completely unrelated to the young man and the fact that he was slacking during his shift must have upsetted the boss, giving him no choice but to call for his super hero, dakho han, to the rescue. surely... while dakho built castles in the air, the older man's hand found itself massaging the area between his eyebrows as a sigh left his lips, before he spoke: "dakho, these customers won't serve themselves," well, they would if they had turned the shop into a self service cafรฉ like dakho had suggested plenty of times... but that, he doesn't say outloud- not because the young man was smart enough not to- no. but because the other one carried on speaking before he could. "so go serve them!"

often times dakho's coworkers wondered how had the young man managed to work for as many years in this shop the way he did, without getting his ass kicked out of the cafรฉ. and in all honesty, dakho himself sometimes wondered how he did it too. pure talent, probably? as dakho thought. but truth was the han might be late more often than not or get easily distracted by x or y reasons during a shift, but dakho was a hard worker. regardless of whether or not a task was part of his contract, dakho never refused to perfom it. leave it to him to carry the newly delivered heavy loads, or pick up something that couldn't make it to the shop from the other side of the city. delivery, mop the floors or clean the bathrooms. dakho did it all, so long as it secured his spot among the team. because he felt fortunate enough to have been recruited to begin with. and while he might not be very fond of this job, he couldn't afford loosing it.

oh, also because this was a shithole and they had no choice but to keep him.

so turning back around, dakho let his head fall between his shoulders, in defeat. as fortunate as the young han felt, some days you just really didn't want to work. and today was one of those days to the man, especially with how rough yesterday night's match was. even as he stood there, dakho could still feel the ghost of the blasts hammering his body. but with an exhale escaping his lips, the man came to peace with the idea that he had no choice but to work anyways. therefore, taking in a breath, as though the air entering his lungs would give the man the energy to fulfill the rest of his shift, he offered a faint smile to jaeha before speaking: "sorry jae," he shrugged, "can't bring it to ya right now but feel free to grab one," he spoke, while leaving. "i'll cover it later!" was the last thing the man said before turning his back and at last, focusing on his waiter duty.

brown hues scanned the cafรฉ, seeking out any customers in need of service, or a table in need of cleaning- or anything else really that would save him from any more yells of their boss. his eyes flicked from table to table, noting the steamy cups of customers chatting and enjoying each other's companies. some solitary ones preferring the company of no one else but their own. one could argue the place was unusually busy- on one hand, the bustling was good for a change- on another, it meant more work for dakho which the young man wasn't very fond of. it was then that his eyes laid on a customer that had seemingly just sat down, dakho saw an opportunity to provide service. so straightening his apron, han prepared his notepad (for real this time) as he swiftly made his way over.

"good mornin'!" exclamed the male, with a click of his pen as he positioned the latter on top of the paper, ready to write. the enthusiam and energy that coated his tone seemingly genuine, despite his exhaustion. with the customer's back facing dakho, it wasn't until he smoothly positioned himself in from of him that his eyes fell on the other's features. finally, he lifted his eyes from his notepad. smile beaming as he spoke, "what can I.. uh-"

Instantly, a confusing swirl of emotions flooded his senses. as the man found himself stumbling on his words, "I-uh..." his brain felt like it was buzzing, unable to process the sudden surge of thoughts which were becoming a jumbled mess, while a fluttering sensation stirred in his stomach. what the fuck? "uh- can I- um," bewildered by his reaction as much as the storm of feelings at the bottom of his stomach, dakho struggled to understand, what was happening to him? even the smile on his features seemed to leisurly disappear as the man underwent this flood of perplex emotions. in a desperate attempt to not make himself appear like a complete fool- or a weirdo; the man, as though turned into a toddler, spoke the first word that came to his mind: "food?

The day had been long and tedious for ๐“ฏeng, as most tended to be, apart from the kink in his neck due to sleeping in his car โ€• he'd worked a double the night before tending the bar at a shithole pub he couldn't ever quite remember the name of (Diablo? or was that the name of a game ad he'd seen?) regardless it stunk of stale beer and piss, that he could recall well enough; in fact if it weren't for the bitter scent of heated coffee beans he would've sworn the stench was burnt into his nostrils this very moment. It wasn't the worst job he had ever worked, not by far, but it was exhausting enough to stand on his feet all day then heap on his unfortunate encounters of young college women yelling over the bar top to 'surprise them with something fruity' with their tits pushed up to their chin in no doubts an attempt to be picked up for the night it made him want to kill himself. Feng himself might've at one point in his life taken the bait but his medication was too much of a downer for that and god knows he'd tried to ignore it at first, pretend it wasn't happening โ€• Feng had lost count at the amount of times he spent hunched over in a hook up's bathroom trying to get his junk up to spare himself some embarrassment (it never did) never in his life did he think he would be able to go 5 months without the entertainment of another's warm body but here he was. Had it been the worst 5 months of his life, yes. Has he enjoyed life since, well no but his therapist says there's more to life than sexual interactions 'try picking up a hobby, what do you think about painting?' she suggested enthusiastically, he thought she should shove that idea up her ass and die. But Feng didn't vocalize his own suggestion he went out and bought a cheap canvas, acrylic paints and a single brush. He ended up putting his fist through the white material 10 minutes in; it was safe to say painting was not a hobby he'd be picking up again any time soon.
He'd been willing to quit smoking when she'd recommended it and drinking for that matter as well, he refused to budge on caffeine specifically coffee โ€• at this point he was certain it was the only thing keeping him upright and functional. He was already on edge enough and jittery enough having been without for a few hours but now as he stood waiting for somebody to serve him, he had half a mind to walk out of the cafe and into on-coming traffic if he was forced to wait another 5 minutes; he was certain the coffee was gonna be shit anyways so to have to wait for his certain disappointment was even more draining. Feng huffed out dragging a shaky hand through his bleached locks, the length was becoming to long and seemed to fall into his eyes more than he was willing to put up with; he made a mental note to cut some length off tonight. He'd been too far in his own head to hear the owner of the cafe hustling the much taller employee, not that it would've peaked Feng's interest anyways.

It wasn't until the shadow of the approaching employee loomed over him did he finally look towards the menu that hung over head, squinting at the lettering as if it might make the bolded prices beside the beverages shrink. He hadn't even bothered to send a greeting back at the voice that graced his ears, no, he needed to get the fuck out of this aesthetically pleasing coffee shop before the muffled lyrics of some fuckass Taylor Swift song drove him to insanity. His dark brows furrowed in confusion when he fully acknowledged the stuttering of the employee before him, were they having a fucking stroke or something? His befuddled gaze fell from the menu above to the man below it, he sucked in a breath through his teeth. Fuck he was hot. Feng blinked once. twice. thrice. he could feel the saliva evaporate from his mouth as he was suddenly thrown into a whirl of anxiety the more he consumed the features of the man. he didn't even want the fucking coffee anymore, the bitter beverage paled in comparison to the complete ice cold rush that had zapped his brain. For him, Feng would quit caffeine, shit he'd take up being a saint if it meant staying in his presence for a few more seconds. He could feel the heat creep up the back of his neck and he knew he didn't have much longer before it reached his ears flushing them pink, his mouth fell open a millimeter as he tried but failed to vocalize anything really โ€• his tongue swiped across his lower lip as he willed himself to factory reset. The only saving grace is the man before him seemed to be struggling to get his words out as well, that at least comforted Feng enough in hopes that maybe he could still save face and not totally embarrass himself; Feng let out a muffled snort at his word vomit. Food? that was cute.
His mouth curled into a lascivious smirk โWhat's your name? so I know what to look for.โž he drawled lowly, chin jutting out softly towards the menu clearly teasing the man regarding his suggestion of food, the man before him would probably taste better than anything the cafe had to offer. Feng had managed to throw a wet towel on the blazing anxiety that pumped through his veins just momentarily, he took a beat just to allow his eyes to wander his body before he shrugged a shoulder to let the man know he was, in fact, taunting him โAmericano, iced, if you have it.โž

kim jaewoo
survivor

  • "How are you so fucking impossible you couldn't wave and smile for five minutes?!" Jaewoo's mother screamed into his ear.

Dressed in a beautiful all black Chanel dress, Jae's mother stood across from him at the end of their ridiculously long kitchen island. Similarly, Jaewoo was dressed in an all black Chanel suit. They had just returned from a publicity event marking the Kims' first collaboration with Chanel. Jae's parents owned an extremely popular magazine company named Blush. Blush was meant to rival Vogue and the Kim family had profited immensely off of it. For decades they had elevated themselves to elite status, raking in millions in profits. Not only did Jae reap the profits of being the heir to the company and inheriting all of the money that his parents accumulated, he also modeled for the company. Nepotism at its finest. He was well known across social circles within the high society of the city. However, behind the perfect picture the Kims tried so desperately to uphold, Jaewoo was quite the problem child. He never listened to his parents and always found a way to disappoint them further. Today had been no different.

"Five FUCKING minutes. Is it that difficult, Jaewoo? How the fuck are you going to be CEO one day if you can't even do this?!" Christina Kim exclaimed, throwing her hands up in exasperation. "And wipe that disgusting smirk off your face before I send you to rehab for- who the fuck cares I'll make it up! Get the fuck out of here."

"Love you too." the brunette replied tauntingly, holding his hands up to make the shape of a heart. Before his mother could scream at him some more, Jaewoo walked to the elevator of their penthouse.

A few moments later he was changing into casual clothing in his walk-in. His idea of casual was still an entire outfit of designer clothing just more dedicated to comfort than a suit. He slipped on a tank top, hoodie, and ripped baggy jeans. He slipped on a pair of his favorite Balenciagas and exited the building. The male made his way to the garage where he got into his obnoxiously red Ferrari. Jaewoo was the type to make sure everyone around him knew he was rich. He got in and began to drive. After heated outbursts from his mother, Jaewoo always needed to go cool off somewhere. Even though he never let it show, every word she screamed at him stung. He was in a brutal tug of war game between his emotions. On the one hand, he wanted his parents to love him and for him to be enough. On the other hand, he knew that would never happened and hated them for it. He would act out, get yelled at, feel hurt, and repeat the cycle again.

Spotting a sign for a cafe, the male let out a sigh and swerved into the parking lot. Jaewoo was not the most careful driver. He figured if any accidents occurred, his parents had the money and the lawyers to bury it. He exited his bright red vehicle and locked it behind him. From the outside, the cafe looked like nothing special. A shit-hole cafe in a shit-hole city, the male thought to himself. He shoved open the doors to the cafe, unbothered by how loud it was. To him, none of these people mattered. All he saw were a couple minimum wage workers and people who bought $5 cups of coffee and pastries to make their lives seem more affluent. What a joke. When Jaewoo wanted to treat himself, he'd fly to Rome or Kyoto.

The overpowering smell of coffee and the cheesy pop music from the speakers began to give Jaewoo a headache. He placed his hand on his temples and sighed. Reaching into the back pocket of his jeans, the boy grabbed a half empty pack of cigarettes. Was smoking allowed? Probably not. Did he care? Most definitely not. Now all that he needed was- oh no... where was it? With an aggravated huff, Jaewoo realized he had left his lighter at home. Without a single ounce of hesitation, Jaewoo dropped himself down beside the nearest person he could see. In this instance, it was Jaeha. He sat down in the chair opposite of hers, spreading his legs out and reclining into the hard wood. Out of the corner of his eyes he noticed books and papers scattered over the table but Jaewoo didn't care. His time was more precious than whatever studying this girl was doing.

"Yo, bookworm, got a light?" Jaewoo asked, his eyes unrelentingly staring into Jaeha's. His cocky signature smirk slowly spread across his lips. He shook his hand to show the cigarette placed delicately between his pointer and middle finger. It was almost as if the male knew how much unjustified audacity he possessed in that moment and was waiting for her to buckle and fold to his wishes.

through the various people speaking all around them, jae-ha could perfectly make out the hushed voice of their boss fussing dakho. she knew neither of them would ever get punished for something so small, but it was still baffling how much he's up dakho's ass about waiting tables. like, yeah people need to get served, but this is also a shithole cafรฉ. she would highly doubt anyone has high expectations when walking in. she stifled a small giggle at the poor man's position. although seeing him with his defeated expression about having to work made her face soften ever so slightly. she gave a reassuring smile as the pitiable man reluctantly went back to doing what he's paid to do.

jae-ha slid the empty plate that used to hold a buttery, and slightly stale, croissant to the edge of the table so that she could have some more room. she plugged her earbuds back in, playing her music softly. she honestly didn't mind studying if she was at a place like this. as torturous as it may be, having people around her makes her want to study even more so that she doesn't have to interact with any of them. it was the ideal break from dealing with people without being stuffed up in her apartment all day. but unfortunately her peace came to a abrupt end.

now, there are quite a few things that jae-ha hates in this world; dogs, sausage, intense perfumes, among other things. but the one thing she probably hates the most in this universe would be snobby rich kids. and maybe mustard. and just to her luck, guess who sat right across the table from her, completely uninvited. a snobby rich kid. she could tell just by the way he dressed and how held himself that he thought he was so much better than everyone else in this cafรฉ. and that included jae-ha. she looked up from her books, removing the earbud from her left ear so she could hear him properly. she quickly regretted that choice.

"smoking isn't allowed in here, asshole. even if it was, what in god's name makes you ever even think that i would give you something?" her words came out almost instantly. she has heard no more than five words out of this man's mouth and has never even seen him before, yet she already resented him. he could've been the most respected, adored, perfect, and entirely good person on this planet and she would still hate him. in her eyes, someone who carries themselves like how he does and speaks to people like that, does not deserve to be treated kindly. and she definitely won't be treating him with any hint of kindness. "why don't you just go buy one with mommy and daddy's money and leave me the fuck alone?" her words held a certain animosity towards the person across from her. she quickly placed her earbud back in her ear and went back to studying, hoping he would just leave her alone like she asked.

  • Now that Jaewoo was sitting across from Jaeha, he finally really noticed her for the first time. Somehow he had sat down across from the one woman that fit all of his expansive and complex criteria. Female, Korean, and hot. He wasn't really into nerds but he supposed that exceptions could be made when they were as beautiful as the woman seated across from him. In response to Jaeha's clear frustration with him, Jae let out an amused scoff, his smirk ever growing. "Maybe because I'm so hot you can't resist me?" the male replied nonchalantly, seemingly unbothered by the fact that Jaeha looked visibly annoyed that he was sitting at her table uninvited.

Hearing Jaeha talk about his parents' money made him ever so slightly offended. "Bro, I'm the face of Blush. I don't need mommy and daddy's money." the cocky male replied, "besides, my assistant is on vacation right now and the convenient store is..." Jaewoo lazily lifted his arm in the direction of the door, "so far away..." Jaewoo didn't understand why his personal assistant was allowed any vacation time. After all, he had been looking for someone with 24/7 availability. How the fuck was his assistant going to be able to assist him from the Philippines? If he wanted a snack at 3AM, someone to pick him up from the club, etc. he needed to temporarily find someone else. This job, in Jae's eyes, was a vacation. He got paid quite well and got to travel with Jaewoo whenever he went anywhere which was quite often. That was a vacation in and of itself and Jae thought that his assistant was quite ungrateful for needing time off. How lazy could one be?

He was surprised by the fire that Jaeha had in her, telling him to leave her the fuck alone and what not. However, Jaewoo had already decided he was in fact not going to leave her the fuck alone. If for no other reason than out of sheer boredom. Everything had always been handed to Jae, he had never had to work for anything that he had. Therefore, he didn't value time in the way other people did. He was almost always free to do whatever he wanted whenever he wanted to do it. In his mind, Jaeha could just study later and focus on him now. Perhaps that's because he viewed her as beneath him similar to everyone else in the cafe so therefore he had no problem intruding upon and wasting their time.

Jaewoo picked up one of Jaeha's books from the table and flipped through the pages. To Jae's surprise it was an English textbook. Was this girl trying to learn English? "This is cute." the male began in that annoying and provoking voice of his. He knew full and well that he was taking up her time and bothering her but he did not care whatsoever. "Not very effective though. Dude, just hire a tutor or some shit. I don't offer my services to just anybody but maybe if you ask really nicely I'll reconsider." he teased. It was probably evident at this point he didn't have plans to leave anytime soon.

all jae-ha ever wanted was peace and quiet. but did she ever get that? no. she wasn't sure what exactly she did in a past life, but she must've been a very evil person to be punished like this. hearing his words over her soft music was like torture. she may not know him very well, however she would like to keep it that way. she looked up at him with a baffled expression after she fully processed what he had just said to her.

"I would very much like to know what gave you the idea that I would think you're hot? And what makes you think that just because you're hot, I'd give you any special treatment?"

anyone would be able to tell that jae-ha was annoyed and borderline pissed about the situation. and yet the man across from her still stayed seated, almost as if he was enjoying this like a game. which only made her even more pissed in all honesty. her eyebrow raised at what he said. he was the face of Blush? how come she hadn't recognized his face at all, even now.

"The closest convenient store is less than a mile down the road. Not that far." the main thing going through jae-ha's mind at the moment was how bad she felt for whatever poor soul had to put up with this menace as a full time job. that vacation was well earned, and should last forever. she lowered her head back down to focus on her books, not-so-secretly wishing he would just leave her be. seriously though, what's a girl gotta do for a moment of peace around here? she just ignored him and started writing notes down as she read the textbook. english grammar was one of those things that she knew, but it didn't really make sense. why are there so many words that mean the same thing, or vise versa? like, yeah korean has some of those. but that's entirely different in her mind. she grew up learning that language, so she knew it by heart. it just made sense. the closest experience she has to speaking english is when she took french for a few years back in high-school. but she learned the hard way that they still aren't similar.

jae-ha could feel herself getting a headache by jaewoo just talking. she gave a slight chortle at his comment, almost in awe of how self-absorbed this man was. "Not everyone has excess funds to just throw around because they can't be bothered to do something." and it wasn't like jae-ha was completely struggling for money, she did have her own apartment in college. but she wasn't exactly 'living the high life' either. she left home with a decent sum of money that she's just decided not to touch until it was necessary.

her thinking came to an immediate halt at his suggestion. him tutor her? was he out of his mind? "I- Wh- I don't even-" words were not coming to her head. she knew she wasn't the best at english, but she's never had this issue before. no, this wasn't her not being proficient at a language, this was purely just shock at the audacity of that man. "What on earth?" she muttered. her voice held a genuine confusion, unable to form a quick and witty response as she usually does. "I don't think you even know the difference between affect and effect, what makes you think you'd be able to tutor me properly?" jae-ha wasn't exactly religious, but she was very much praying to every god she could think of for him to just leave her be.

  • There was something about Jaeha that continuously peaked Jae's interest. Not only was she one of the most beautiful women he had ever seen, he liked that she had a bite to her as well. She wasn't someone to throw away everything for a chance to talk to him like most of the women in his social circles. No, the woman sitting across from him was not giving into him one bit. She wasn't budging. The brunette had always liked a challenge and there was one sitting right across from him.

"Look at me? This face... the abs... I'm the full package. You don't make it on the cover of Blush being mid." Jaewoo replied, as if the notion of him being not hot was the craziest thing he had ever heard. It was like saying the Earth was flat. Physically impossible. "I'm not asking for special treatment, just a light. Fuck, I need to take a load off." the male said, letting out a small frustrated sigh.

He was still worked up from getting screamed at by his mother. He knew smoking was horrible for him but he didn't care. If he could get temporary relief from the stress and anxiety inside of him, he'd take it and deal with the consequences later on. Despite having such a picture perfect life, behind all of the glitz and glamour he was really hurting. Instead of processing it, he used that hurt to further hurt himself and others.

Jaewoo scrunched up his face into a look of disgust. "I would just take my Ferrari but driving is so.... hard. My chauffeur is also on vacation." the male joked. He did have a chauffeur but only for trips that were longer and for business.

He leaned forward and looked closely at Jaeha's notes. They were upside down from his perspective but it didn't really bother him. "Affect, effect, tomato, tomato. It sounds the same so what does it matter? Dude, you can't get so bogged down in the details." What Jaewoo meant was it did not matter for him. No matter what he did, he wasn't reliant on his perfect grammar. If he needed to write something professional, someone in Blush would proofread it. He didn't need it for his job either as a model.

"Bro, all of this..." Jaewoo began, pointing at all of Jaeha's notes, "doesn't matter. Just work as a model instead. You're hot." The male's eyes traveled from her eyes, down, and back up to her eyes. "Like a 9. Audition at Blush and I'm sure you'd land a gig. Beats working at a shitty minimum wage job like this, right? If you think $20 worth of tips at the end of the day is a steal, your life needs some serious reevaluation. My hoodie costs more than you'd make in a day here. You don't get that from a boring ass 9 to 5." Jaewoo said, giving Jaeha's unasked for and absolutely awful life advice.

Jaewoo was still holding his cigarette and knocked on the table with the hand that was holding it. "So, about that light..."

His stomach was rumbling and he wanted to eat.

the door closed behind him, emitting a soft click that resonated against the damp tiles of the room. one feet stepped on the cold floor, and soon followed the faint sound of a single squeak. as he turned the knob, a rush of hot water erupted from the showerhead, quickly filling the small space with a thick, comforting steam. the moisture clung to the air, creating a hazy curtain that enveloped him in warmth. a faint sight escaped his nostrils as he tilted his head back, letting the water cascade over his face, its gentle but persistent flow washing away the remnants of his strenuous workout. streams of water poured down his broad shoulders, tracing the contours of his muscles, each droplet massaging away the tension and fatigue. the steam rose in swirling tendrils, mingling with the beads of water that glistened on his skin, making every breath he took feel deep and soothing. wen stood still for a moment, eyes closed, allowing the heat to seep into his body, loosening tight knots in his back and legs. the sensation was both invigorating and calming, a dichotomy that he cherished. as the water continued to pour down his body, he felt a profound sense of renewal, the grime and sweat of his efforts melting away, leaving him cleansed and invigorated.

just as he was beginning to lose himself in the tranquility of the translucent clouds, came the loud sound of knocking, yanking him back to reality. shortly after, his friend's voice trailed behind. daehyun's. few months now had passed since the two men's first meeting. though even if years had gone by, wen would still remember it clear as day the time they had first met. the man found it quite interesting, how you could go years knowing a person and yet, comes a day when you cross a stranger's path and suddenly, their importance outgrows the one of people you have known your entire life, in not even half the amount of time. it wasn't to say wen had many important people in his life to begin with. after all, he had imposed it on his own self to not allow any sort of relationship to steam from daily interactions with others due to his frequent moving, until very recently. but dae had managed to quickly climb the ladder of importance in his life. they were only friends, of course, officially at least; but the younger man was the closest friend wen has ever had in his entire life.

he recalls it very cleary, how dae had requested him to spot him as he lifted, a favor difficult to refuse when it was asked so kindly. wen recalls encouraging him as he did, recalls suggesting to straighten his back along other tips and of course, recalls the nice arch of- the rest of his memories are for him only to recall. however, what wen doesn't recall is the exact time when daehyun had tripled in the weight he lifted, to be around exactly the same amount himself lifted. quite amusing, he thought. naturally, wen had noticed dae simply wanted to match the older man's rythm, even if it was much less forgiving on him than it was on wen. but wen never made note of that outloud. instead preferring to hide away the faint grins that fought their way on his lips whenever daehyun found some excercises harder than others but stubbornly pushed through them nevertheless. admirable, really.

as he listened to dae's whines, which he often found adorable, his hands were brought to his forehead. fingers splayed, and pushed the wet strands of his hair back, feeling the slick strands slide effortlessly beneath his palms. droplets of water clung to his eyelashes and trickled down his cheeks, so he then swept the remaining water from his face, clearing his vision in doing so. then came daehyun's comment about his ass- not that it was a rare occurence, but each time it occured, it never failed at spreading a grin on the male's face. this time it was also followed by a chuckle. if you were to consult the therapist within wen, it might reveal that the frequency of dae's remarks about the other's appearance concealed more than simple friendly compliments. perhaps something dae himself was not aware of yet. though, without a doubt, something that was the root of the proposition wen wanted to lay out to dae, once they were in a more suitable context than the gym... while having lunch, for example.

for now, wen focused on hastening his shower. once done, his feet led him out the confined space and his hands took hold of two towels. one wrapped around his hips, though modest in its coverage, its edges were tucked securely. and the other, he used to dry off the black strands on his head as he made his way towards the lockers. with a final swipe of the fabric on his hair, the man glanced around and noticed dae sitting on the bench near their lockers, pout clear on his lips, a body language wen knew all too well. still, it stretched one side of his lips into an amused grin, "gosh, anyone told you how adorable that pout of yours is?" the man teased, new-zealander accent coating his words. friendly banter, of course, nothing more. the cool air kissed his damp skin, the remnants of the shower still clinging to him in glistening droplets that traced the lines of his physique. his hair, still dripping, framed his face in wet strands, adding a casual dishevelment to his otherwise composed stance. "alright, i'll make it quick. give me one second. " and with that, the man began changing into his clothes.

now dressed more comfortably than in a towel, wen was ready to leave. retrieving his belongings from his locker, the man pushed the door closed and turned to dae. "alright big boy," he began, throwing his gym bag on his shoulder, a faint smile on his features as he spoke, "any particular place you're thinking for a feed?"

"a cat!" he nodded, turning down the hall opposite of the dog kennels. "I don't own a animal either. sasha pushed open the door to the cat kennels, walking inside to hold the door open for her. he paused for a second, bottom lip sinking into his mouth while he tried to slowly interpret what she'd asked. "Uh," he stated at her, brown eyes blinking once, twice, and then three times like there was not a thought in his head. "yes, people want a cats." sasha was good with words and knowing what they meant; he just struggled with context and sentence structure. "here are the cats," he grinned, his face lighting up once his attention was turned to the wall of kennels. "I like this cat." sasha waved his hand to entice Sofia into following him down towards the end of the room, stopping in front of the lowest kennel. "we are friends." he pointed towards the cat- a white and black female that was curled up in the corner. "she is very nice!"

๐“ˆofia did not have very many friends growing up, fewer even now without the consistency of school forcing children to interact with each other. She had always been quiet preferring to have her nose stuck between the pages of a book rather than gossip like the other girls and then as an adult writing jot notes for chapters of her latest novel when inspiration hit, she'd been told by her mother that her silence was off-putting; people did not enjoy the company of someone they could not talk to easily she said often. Sofia never wished to make anyone uncomfortable especially not for just being herself, so it was only natural that she kept to herself from that point on much to her father's dismay. He'd been the only beacon in their short time together, he'd spoken about his own childhood a few times to her in passing. As a child, his parents had own two cats whom which he grew up with โ€• he never said anything else regarding these pets but she got the impression based on the expression on his face that he recalled them fondly.
It was strange now, making the decision to adopt her own cat, which she also hoped to have fond memories of. She'd always liked the thought of animals though she wasn't sure how much she would appreciate a dog they might've been a little too much work for her especially when it came to her sometimes locking herself away in her home office to write a few chapters, stopping to take the dog on a walk would hinder her ability to write โI don't know much about dogs admittedly,โž she replied softly โbut really, I think all life is precious.โž and it was true. Her eyes darted down the halls as Sasha led her to, presumably, where the cats were being held and even still she was overwhelmed. She found herself quite impressed to see how unbothered the younger boy seemed to be, while yes, she knew it was his job to be accommodating and knowledgeable with clients but still Sofia wasn't sure she would be able to hold herself with such a regard especially at his age; it was even more awe-inspiring that it seemed English was not his first language but he did his best.
Her attention was drawn to the first cat that Sasha acknowledged, she was cute of course, Sofia didn't know anything about breeds of cats but she seemed to check off all the characteristics that a cat would have; fluffy and round with a small pink nose to tie it all in. Her glossed lips pulled upwards into a gentle smile as she leaned down to get a better look. โI can see why youโ€™d like her, she seems kind, much like you.โž She stood at full height and looked around the room to try and catch the eye of any other sleepy animals. โWhich one has been here the longest?โž Sofia questioned, she had no doubt that Sasha's favourite would have no trouble getting adopted but she would like to give a chance to a fur baby who others had overlooked much like herself.

It had started out with unexplained 'riot's popping up around many major cities within the US, Admittance spikes with an influx of violent patients being admitted into the emergency rooms within hospitals around the country and a massive spike in Police related shootings in the last 48 hours. The sudden appearance of military presence placing road blocks leading in and out of all highly populated areas was said to assist local authorities in stomping out rampant civilians who were the leading cause of all previously described chaos. The government urged people to stay within their homes at night unless absolutely necessary and be vigilant, reporting any and all suspicious behavior to their closest military outpost. It had worked for a short period of time, most individuals were far to concerned with their own lives to truly pay attention to what the media intended to hide; TikTok's circulating the truth of these labeled 'police brutality' incidents were written off as conspiracy theories. It wasn't long before the word 'fungus' began being thrown around, this only further seemed to push the idea of theories spread by end of the world preppers. The patrons within the Cafe sat in a false sense of safety, unknowingly only a few blocks away from what would be known as 'Ground Zero'.
If they had been paying attention, perhaps they would have noticed the increasing level of chaos happening just outside of the large display windows โ€• the music playing overhead seemed to drown out the shrieks of terror as people ran by in an attempt to escape what was befalling the once relatively upscale neighborhood. The radio station let out a long buzz of static as the music came to a halt, the host's voice cutting in the middle of an up-beat Taylor Swift single.
โ€œSorry, we're just- uh, we're being told something is going on out there.โ€ There was a small pause as the host was being spoken to off mic. โ€œWhat?. . .What do you mean?. . .Um, We're being told the government is declaring a state of emergency; all civilians should seek safety immediately and be wary of any aggressive behavior. . .? Sounds like it has something to due contaminated crops the FDA announced last weekโ€•
The station buzzes once more with static before the music resumes, with little time to react, a woman crashes through the large display window. Falling to the ground in a pile of sharp shards unmoving momentarily, then her arm twisted unnaturally as she attempted to rise. With the barrier of the outside world now gone, the people residing within the cafe could now hear the mayhem separating; finally the woman stood, her body racking with tremors as if trying and failing at holding herself back as her eyes darted around wildly. Her mouth snapped, teeth clashing together nosily before she threw herself on the nearest person whom let out a blood-curdling scream the moment her teeth broke skin - the people within the building wouldn't have much time to comprehend the scene before them as another frantic person came tumbling in through the broken window.

She found herself quite impressed to see how unbothered the younger boy seemed to be, while yes, she knew it was his job to be accommodating and knowledgeable with clients but still Sofia wasn't sure she would be able to hold herself with such a regard especially at his age; it was even more awe-inspiring that it seemed English was not his first language but he did his best.

sasha was quiet for a minute, two fingers jammed in between the wires of the kennel door to gently run down the cat's head. he cooed at her under his breath. "I do not know a lot of dogs also." sasha paused for a moment, hand frozen from where it was still reaching towards the cat to think about what sofia was saying. he stood up, brushing his palms against his pants to rid them of cat fur. "yes, I think so too." sasha spoke with a bright grin- he seemed to light up at the fact that this complete stranger thought of him as a kind person. it was just so exciting to finally be able to help someone find their forever friend, instead of always being stuck watching from behind the window.

"she is very nice, I want to take her with me, but I do not know if my brother will like it." sasha sighed; he may not be very aware of the world and what makes it work, but he did know how hard dakho worked for them- he'd seen how exhausted he was, how much energy his job took from him, all the times he'd come home bruised and beaten and sasha had to just pretend he didn't notice because it was clearly something he wasn't supposed to know about. but sasha saw, and he knew, and it made him sad knowing that he could only do so much to show dakho how much he loved and adored him- it was part of the reason he started working at the shelter in the first place. he didn't have much of an income, but sasha was desperate to do whatever he could to make dakho's life just the slightest bit easier. "my brother is very kind too, I love him. I think she will love him too." sasha grinned from down the hall at sofia, excited at any chance he had to brag about dakho.

"oh, this one!" sasha skipped up back towards Sofia, stopping at a kennel to his left. it was an older cat, one who sasha had come to love just as much as the other one. "he is old, everyone tells me they do not want him." sasha stares sadly at the cat, seemingly on the verge of tears just thinking about all the times he'd seen people just walk straight past him. "I love him a lot, I will like to take him home too. do you want to hold him? he is very nice!" sasha speaks quickly in an attempt to hide the fact that he's basically pleading this woman to adopt this specific cat. "he has been here for a very long time."

๐“ˆofia watched the boy before her for a moment, envious of his ability to be so untroubled, while it was true she did not know him at all โ€• to her it was clear he marched to the beat of his own drum; she was always worried others may not like her beat or perhaps it would be too loud. She had overcome many of her own personal obstacles in life but it was rather easy to fall back into the mindset her mother had forced her into, Sofia did not wish to be the small, meek girl she truly was. She craved to be stronger, to speak out against injustice and advocate for those who couldn't and while she did her best to live by those principles it seemed she still lacked the very thing Sasha himself had; the capacity to be so care-free. As much as she enforced her desired principles, she couldn't help but wonder what others would think of her, what her mother would say. And yet, somehow she always knew what her mother would say - she couldn't run from that domineering voice in her head telling her she wasn't good enough, that she should try harder. Sofia was a work in progress, but she didn't mind that. As long as there was something to work towards.
Her lips pulled away to reveal a genuine smile at the mention of the boys brother, she herself had always wished for a sibling, she thought it might've saved her from the loneliness of childhood. โI don't know if your brother could say no to a face like that,โž Sofia commented, once again referring to the furry faced friend that Sasha had introduced her to. It was sweet to know Sasha didn't have to face life alone, again, she didn't know anything about what he might've went through but surely having not to face it by himself was the better alternative. โI suppose it would only make sense that he'd be kind too.โž She doubted such a boy of innocence could have an awful brother though she, herself, had an awful mother but she'd managed to be kind enough or at least she thought so.
Sofia followed Sasha with little hesitance this time becoming more comfortable in the presence of a stranger, her eyes fell to the kennel indicated by the brunette, immediately she could spot that this one was a senior animal. It upset her to think, this cat was once someone's baby and now it sat alone. She wondered if he had been loved well in it's life, she hoped he had. Her eyes softened at the ball of fur, her painted pointer finger hooking around the wired bar of his cage as she continued to observed him โI've never held a cat, I don't want to do it wrong.โž Sofia admitted in a small voice, she had already decided this would be the cat she'd give a home. โI'd like to adopt this one, Sasha.โž

kim daehyun
survivor

  • For Dae, a chance encounter at the gym had led to one of his closest friendships. A stranger turned gym buddy turned friend. Wen was someone that Daehyun admired greatly. He was grounded, mature, and his sexy accent was to die for. What more could somebody want in a friend? Wen had such a positive influence on the male's life, more than he probably knew. Daehyun's world had been flipped on his head when he left his family and entire life behind when he moved across states and to the big city. He had come from a Christian conservative family with extremely conservative views. For the first time, he was experiencing what life outside his exclusionary bubble was like. Needless to say, the transition was overwhelming and Dae had been stumbling through it all alone. Then he met Wen. The older male seemed endlessly wise and supported him during his toughest moments. He was the guy Dae could come to about almost anything.

"If it isn't Mr. America's Ass." Daehyun teased as Wen made his way over toward him and the lockers. In comparison to Wen, Dae was lacking a certain level of... maturity. Despite being only a year or so younger than the other male, Daehyun acted at least three years younger. He was mouthy, cocky, and still experiencing many firsts in his life. "Yo, my eyes are up here." the male replied in response to Wen's comment about his pout.

Despite the comment he had just made, his eyes couldn't help but wander over Wen's body. The man was built like a Greek god and Dae couldn't help but feel jealous. He had muscle that he was proud of but most people would look skinny standing next to Wen. He had convinced himself that all of his stolen glances at Wen's physique was to track his own progress, but a deeper look would likely find something that Dae himself was unaware of. He wasn't quite the type for self reflection and introspection.

The slim male stood up and grabbed his gym bag. He ran a hand through his hair and gave Wen's a question a brief thought. "Let's go to Louis', the restaurant I work at. We can get free food with my discount." Dae offered. A burger right after an intense workout? Sounded amazing. Daehyun had been working at Louis' Chicken Shop for the past three months. He had arrived at the city with barely any money in his pocket. He had just enough to afford rent for a month so he took the first job that he could find. It just so happened to be a server at a fast food restaurant.
