Realistic or Modern Diablo's Summer Camp for Teens (IC)

Spook sighed audibly, returning the glare he was being given right back to the other, admittedly taller boy.

"Yeah, sure, whatever."

If it were possible to look more bored, they might've started handing out medals for it. He didn't appreciate being told he was weaker than a girl, but it also wasn't enough to make him snap... at least not visibly.

"Ooh, comparing me to a girl? How positively original."

It didn't take a genius to figure out how angry the guy was getting with his snarky little comments, but Spook honestly didn't care. He wasn't much for fighting, but he was fast enough that he rarely got hit and had become fairly skilled at escaping such situations. It's how scrawny kids survived, after all. Besides, he doubted anyone would dare to make a move right in front of the counsellor anyway.

"I'm fully aware that I'm stuck here, thank you very much. And look, I don't care who you're calling, I really don't, but fine. And only because my favorite band is livestreaming and I need my phone to see it. If you wanna scare me, you're gonna have to work a liiiiittle harder."

Even though he'd agreed to the pathetic circus act, Spook kept his signature smirk, lip rings glinting in the dull light.

Leo just nodded when Spook finally agreed. He was beginning to think they'd never reach an agreement and then he'd have to come up with an entirely new plan. He raised an eyebrow when the punk called his taunt 'original'. As they argued Leo was actually calming himself down more. "If the shoe fits. Besides, you want to talk about original? The sad emo kid that sits off in the corner, forced to go to camp? That doesn't sound like a walking stereotype to you? 'Waah I'm sad so I draw sad things to make me feel better.' He had done his best impression of the other's voice. Leo rolled his eyes, he wasn't going to sit here and get insulted by some punk that didn't even know him. He hadn't even done anything to this guy. He was the one that came off as a total standoffish jerk, not Leo.

"Yeah, sure. Whatever. I don't care what your reason is as long as you suck it up and do it." I wash my hands of this, Leo thought. That guy just has to play nice for a week then he can go back to brooding about how unfair the world is. "And no one's trying to scare you." Leo added with a small sigh. He forced a smile onto his face even though he had just got done insulting the kid. "I'm just trying to get us all a favor, you know? You'll thank me later when you're watching your stream. Just have to put up with us for a few more hours." With that, Leo was completely done with his guy. Talking to him had been wearing on his patience. As he turned his back to the other, he spoke over his shoulder. "Oh, I'm Leo by the way. Nice to meetcha."

Heather wasn't fazed by the no-cellphone rule, but what really bothered her was the whole coffee-ban. How would she ever get by without her daily dose of caffeine? She swallowed hard and looked down at her sheet of paper. Activities like these were pretty stupid, considering how they never really did bring people together. It just forced them into situations where they'd need to interact. She felt that she was better off alone, anyways, but that didn't take away from the fact that she'd look like a jerk and a loner if she didn't socialize. She was never going to tie with anyone, much less win the game, so she decided to watch. She'd brought a fresh notebook in case she'd be stuck in situations like this.

Heather reached into the pocket of her jeans and pulled out a pen, brushing back her brown hair with her left hand. Sitting down at a round, circular table, Heather surveyed the room. Sighing, she tapped her fingers on the table and started writing about one of the more interesting people she'd noticed thus far - a boy who she'd describe as... quiet. There was another guy who he was talking to. It seemed as if he was actually trying to do something with this whole game, though the whole thing seemed rather suspicious. Shrugging it off, she continued to write.

Shino

Shino gasped as he awoke from what could only be described as a falling sensation in his sleep. He quickly looked around the room with his bloodshot eyes to see if anyone had noticed, continuing to wipe the drool from the side of his mouth. Getting shit-faced the night before camp probably wasn't the best idea but Shino digressed. Sitting next to him was a girl who looked roughly around his age, she was fair skinned and rocked brown hair just above shoulder length paired with a resting bitch face. Shino smiled, laughing nervously, hoping she hadn't noticed his rude awakening. The girl seemed to be busy writing something down though so Shino didn't think to much about it. Instead, he tilted his head in confusion as he watched nearby campers gather and converse about some 'Pyramid.' Not really one for childish games, Shino rolled his eyes in hopes that nobody asked him to join.

He tongued the toothpick which dangled from his mouth and continued to wonder about the girl sitting next to him. Shino tilted his head towards the girl, still watching the other campers. "What a fuck fest, amirite?" Shino said in a hushed tone to the girl.

Heather had ended the paragraph describing the first guy, and she was about to begin the next when she heard a whisper. She was kind of in her own zone; she'd almost forgotten that she was at the camp in the first place. Flinching slightly, she slowly closed her notebook and looked up, nodding. "It's... pretty bad. Wouldn't want to be caught up in that mess. It's not like I have any plans of winning this game, anyways." She smirked a little as she got a good look at him. He'd orange-looking (though bloodshot) eyes that were oddly alluring, and she found his hair rather nice in spite of its minor messiness. He was interesting, to say the least. It was a little obvious that he'd been sleeping, considering the fact that there was dried drool lining the outer edges of his bottom lip. Heather watched him continue to play with the toothpick.

After a moment, she spoke. "Ya got a little something," she said, indicating to where it was on her own face. Better to make some friends. It would be bad to be completely friendless at a camp where socializing seems to be the priority. "I'm Heather Hastings," she mentioned, her voice just above a whisper.

Shino watched as Heather motioned to him about the drool still stuck on his face. "Huh? Oh," Shino said, blushing as he quickly turned away to wipe his face. Hnng, already making a fool of myself on the first day of camp. He turned back to the girl and introduced himself, still red from embarrassment. "Shino Ayama, it's a pleasure to meet you." He smiled big, putting out his hand for a shake. "I'm not super big on introductions as you can tell." His sentence was followed by a nervous laugh. With his other hand, Shino slowly slid it into his unzipped backpack. Feeling around for a bit, he revealed a small silver flask underneath the table to Heather. "What do you say we skip all the introductions and get out of here to go make our own fun?" He smirked at Heather, motioning to the flask. Opening up to people was always easier with a little booze.

Heather's smile grew as she watched him turn pink. She continued to listen as he spoke. She could now see that his eyes weren't orange, but a deep red. They weren't that visible due to how strained his eyes already were. His hair was a darker shade of red, but some could mistake it for either brown or purple. Huh. Shino Ayama. "That's a nice name," she commented, shaking his hand. Heather watched him pull the flask from seemingly out of nowhere. She exhaled softly, eyeing the glinting flask. "I'd be down to leave, but I'm really not that much of a drinker. Besides, how would we get out of here?" She slid her notebook back into her small bag, which had been loosely hanging over her shoulder.

Shino looked around the classroom deviously. With so many campers, nobody would notice their absence, right? Shino slid the flask back into his pack, zipped it up, and proceeded to point discretely at the nearest exit. "We could make a break for it." He hushed, his lips curling into a mischievous smile. The only real threat the two of them had to worry about was the camp counselor, but with so much going on in one room it looked as though he already had his hands filled. "Who knows, maybe you and I could even 'Swap shirts' or maybe I could 'Steal something' from you?" He winked playfully at Heather, sliding his hand over hers. "You ready?" Shino's heart rate began to climb, but even he couldn't tell if it was the thrill of getting caught or something much more.

Day 1

That far into the camp, it felt to Yukio that the bunch he'd been put together with seemed more or less a decent group. The only one he didn't like was that condescending guy with the lip rings and the edgy demeanour.

He'd always had a low-key dislike for people like that. They, in Yukio's opinion, were the sort who tried to act crazy or weird supposedly to protest against "the stifling norms of society" or some dumb crap like that, but in reality, only behaved like that for a lack of better things to do or simply for the sake of it. Not at all unlike the self proclaimed 15-year-old Nazis one often saw in the YouTube comments, except more insecure and less stupid.

Nevertheless, Yukio was happy to give him the benefit of the doubt. After all, he himself could get rather cranky when deprived of essentials like coffee, sleep, and free time. Just not to the extent of poking holes into his nose and lips.

He also noticed two others discreetly talking to each other, but chose not to try and interrupt them, opting instead to gaze blankly and dream.

...

Noticing two of the kids, Shino and Heather, looking like they were about to make a break for it, Joshua sighed. He wanted to be as open as possible but he didn't need to be losing track of kids on the first day. In days to come they'd have more freedom but for now he'd appreciate them staying where he put them. A few ice breaker activities, that's all he had wanted. Not too tough, was it? Apparently it was, not many of these kids seeemd exactly thrilled about any of his proposed ideas. That was to be expected, of course, but a man could dream.

Standing up and idly walking towards the door, Joshua 'casually' whistled to himself while leaning against the doorway, obviously ensuring nobody was going to make a break for it. "Ten more minutes and then we'll rally up any winners," he called out to the group casually. After that they would be dismissed to their cabins where they could do whatever they wanted.

Heather's own face began to heat as she started to get caught up in the moment. "We'll see," she murmured, looking around the room to see if anyone was watching. Her eyes locked with the camp counselor's for a brief moment before she looked back at Shino. He was lingering around the doorway, and he seemed to be aware of their plan in spite of their secrecy. "Well fuck, I think you're a little late," she sighed, intertwining her hand with his and squeezing it tightly. "We're probably gonna be outta here soon, so, you'll get some free time." What a let-down. She'd actually been looking forward to it, too.

Shino glared at Joshua, watching as he made his way to block their only escape to freedom. Sighing, Shino slouched back into his chair and looked up at the ceiling. "So close," He exhaled, his words following Heather's, "Well, there's always tonight, I guess." He looked to the girl to his left, her cheeks turning bright pink as she grasped his hand underneath the table. Shino beamed as he thought about what he would do if he could get just a moment alone with Heather. Day one was turning out okay after all.

Heather leaned back in her chair, looking up at the ceiling. She was avoiding eye contact until her face returned to its "normal" colour. "There's really nothing left to do, unless you'd rather talk to the rest of 'em," she answered, gesturing to some of the other campers. "I think it'd be nicer to get to know you, though." There was a pause before she continued. A million questions floated through her mind. One of them was asking herself what she was getting into, but there was so much more she wanted to know about Shino. "So... how would you describe yourself?"

Shino let out a laugh, "And here I was saying I wasn't big on introductions." He continued to smile at her, his toothpick hanging from the corner of his mouth. "What you see is what you get, really," Shino shrugged, "I enjoy long walks on the beach and relaxing nights by the fire just as much as anyone else," He teased. "I'm not really a fan of summer camp, but with my parents out of town, they didn't really think it was 'Safe' to let me be home alone. I just roll with the punches. Something tells me though that this week is going to be an interesting one with you as my partner in crime." Shino winked, removing his hand from Heather's and placing it on the inside of her thigh. "So Heather, tell me something about you?"

After the ice breaker games had concluded, Joshua had shown the campers to their cabins where they had time to rest and unpack for the rest of the evening.

Day 2

"Good morning! I hope everybody slept well." Joshua sipped at his coffee, surveying the group. They had all been woken up at 6am after he had run around their cabins ringing cowbells, and after a hasty breakfast he had ushered all of them out onto the dock near Lake Daybreak. Daybreak was Diablo's private lake, and it was a beauty. Miles long both in width and length, the water was crystal-clear in every sense of the word. It was currently 7am and temperatures were chilly, but the weather forecast was for sunny weather in the afternoon. Sitting at the dock were eight life-preserver vests and Joshua picked these up now.

"Obviously, we're going to do a bit of boating!" He said cheerfully, passing the life-vests around. Two large paddle-boats were sitting at the dock. Each one could fit four people: one to steer, two to paddle and one to sit. Notably, however, there was both a large-sized bucket filled with water and a medium-sized net in each boat. Presumably, the bucket and net were the fourth person's job.

"Today we're going to be splitting into two teams. Team A will consist of Yukio, Leo, Luna and Hailey. Team B will consist of Ryukaa, Spook, Heather and Shino. Team A will be in the blue boat and Team B will be in the red. Today, you guys will be competing to catch as many fish as possible! As a hint, near the shores of the lake there are a lot of small surface-dwelling fish that should be easy to catch." Winking as he emphasized the 'should', Joshua stepped aside on the dock to let the kids through. "You guys are free to decide who gets to steer, to paddle and to catch. You can get in whenever you're ready!"

Personally, Joshua hated lakes. He damn well hoped that nobody fell off of the boat and couldn't swim because he wasn't about to jump in that water and save them. Sometimes he wondered how he'd even gotten hired at Diablo, considering the lake was one of their big attractions, but he rolled with it. Looking up, the councilor realized that he had forgotten something. "Oh, by the way, whichever team loses has to do the dishes for the rest of the week."

Ryukaa looked at the activity. "Wow we really have to do this. Huh." He said with a sigh. He did not expect camp to be like this. It's supposed to be so much different. I guess this was the different camp all together.

Spook glared the lake, the boats, counsellor and yes, even the other campers. This was a nightmare come true.

"Me either," he responded coolly to the other kid, somewhat surprised that he actually agreed with another victim of the camping 'adventure'.

"This is so pathetic... and I'm telling you now, I am not touching some gross slimy fish... or anyone's dirty dishes."

Pouting, Spook's hair fell over his eyes as he sulked, barely acknowledging anyone or anything.

Before Heather could finish up her conversation with Shino, time was up. It didn't seem like things would be so bad. At least, for her. She couldn't say the same for the others, all of whom looked unhappy to be there. She felt... neutral, about the whole situation.

- TIME SKIP: DAY 2 -

Feeling tired, she looked around at the group. Spook and Ryukaa were the two that she didn't know. Though she knew she shouldn't make assumptions, she concluded that Spook was the guy with the black hair swept over his eyes. His eyes were hidden, but she could see that he'd two lip piercings. Interesting. Was Spook his real name? Questions, questions... That left who she assumed was Ryukaa. Purple hair, seemed a little moody; though in a different way than Spook. Okay, stop judging. "I'm Heather," she started, acknowledging her other team members. "Although you may not like me - or any of us, or this place - I think we should try to make an effort to win. The last thing I want to do is wash dishes. Doesn't look like you want to, either," she said, nodding in Spook's direction in response to his previous comment. Heather waited for an answer, watching the beautiful view of the water.

Ryukaa looked at the new girl. "Oh, Hey! My name is Ryukaa. Ryukaa Miura." He said in a cheery tone and a chuckle. "This place is ok I guess though for the start. But I don't really know how it's gonna really be. I hope it's gonna be good though." He added with a smile along with a chuckle and rubbing the back of his head along his purple hair.

Spook turned to look at the girl who was now talking, brushing his fringe away from his black-lined eyes. She was admittedly a little bit pretty, but it's not like such things were important. No matter what they looked like, humans were an annoyance.

"Hi, Heather," he said flatly. "I have nothing for or against you, but this place can burn for all I care. I guess you have a point, though... and ugh, no. I don't do chores."

The gloomy kid didn't pay much attention to Ryukka, though the purple hair was hard to ignore. He seemed optimistic and a bit ignorant, but Spook would give him the benefit of the doubt... for now, anyway.

Heather nodded at Ryukaa and Spook. "Yeah, I'm just hoping..." she sighed. "That, you know. This whole thing won't be more of a drag than it already is." Not wanting to add more pessimism to the group, she managed a small, though real, smile. Once Spook had brushed his hair away from his face, she could see that his eyes were near-gold, and he'd two eyebrow piercings. Piercings had always appealed to her, considering the fact that she'd a low pain tolerance. Wondering what else he and the other campers weren't sharing, she looked back at the boat.

"Okay, so... if you don't want to touch the fish, I could, uh, try to do the net job," she murmured, resignedly. It was the last thing she wanted to do, but if it would put him or the others in less of a bad mood, she'd do it. It's a week. You'll live.

"If you really wanna do it I'll help you out. I wouldn't want you doing all the work by yourself." He told her with a smile. "I hope so too. But of course you know how it is." He said with a slight sigh.

Sighing, Spook stared at the lake with a blank expression.

"Look, whatever. You both seem like borderline tolerable human beings, and no one wants to deal with the fish. If I have to, I will... but only if I can skip dish duty should this mess get even worse. The one thing i hate more than slimy lake creatures is washing dishes..." he trailed off, shuddering at the mere thought of washing a stranger's dish.

As much as he wanted to avoid this, it appeared there was no escaping... at least he still had his stash of candy, hidden somewhere safe and untouched.

"I would feel like crap if you were stuck with the fish, so... let me handle that on my own. Someone has to sit out anyways," Heather said, nodding at Spook. She was being sincere about it, so she was hoping that he didn't consider it a move out of pity or sympathy. "Do you have a bad history with chores?" she asked. Heather kind of just wanted to get the whole activity over with. If she could, she would sit by the shore all by herself, but that was next to impossible with the other campers and Joshua around. "Thanks for offering, but I think I can manage on my own," she added, turning to Ryukaa. Her 'face' had returned without her realizing it; she looked rather bored, as she often did. She cleared her throat, clasping her hands. "That leaves one person to row and another to steer."
