Ruby Heart
sweet like a summer day!
Ruby was having the time of her life. Growing up, all she ever knew was her home and her family. Sure there were the people of Kumondra that were not her family, but being on the S.S. Motunui was completely different. There were so many new people, so many new sites to see, Ruby felt as if she was in a constant state of excitement. Although, it also always felt like she had to reel herself back.
Growing up, her mother regularly voiced her high expectations for her as well as her disappointment when Ruby failed to meet said expectations. Raya expected her daughter to be the new and improved version of herself; everything she did right and correct the things she did wrong. Raya did everything in her power to train Ruby how she was trained, have her be a ferocious and skilled fighter. She did her best to raise her with the grace and elegance that Naomi raised her daughter; After all, Ruby was a Princess! A Princess of the Heart tribe! Raya didn't have those kind of standards when she was growing up. When she was growing up, Raya was very aware of the state of their country, Kumondra. She was very alert about the ongoing war between the tribes and with the Druun; Raya had no choice but to be ruthless, to be a swift yet powerful fighter. That's what Raya wanted for her daughter.
However, Ruby and Raya grew up in different periods in time. While Raya was raised by a single parent in a time of massive struggle with much difficulties, Ruby was raised by two loving parental figures, a mother and an aunt, in a time where there was no Druun and no war between tribes. Her childhood best friend was the person in the exact same position that her mother's rival once was. Time had drastically changed since Raya was her daughter's age, Ruby always had quiet, inner thoughts that it was unreasonable for her mother to expect so much out of her.
Nevertheless, Raya always expected Ruby to be the perfection of grace with a fierce and fighting heart. But that just wasn't who Ruby was. Ruby was bubbly, kind-hearted, she laughed with her whole belly and ran barefoot wherever she could. Ruby was as precious as a Hibiscus flower; Bright and beautiful, full of love and passion. However, Ruby's attempts to be her true self, her attempts to have a normal childhood, were always squashed by the scoldings of her mother.
Whenever Ruby ran around the Palace barefoot, there was always the hushed whisper from her mother; "Ay sus Ruby, where are your shoes? What is the matter with you?"
Whenever Ruby laughed a little too loud when her mother was in a meeting within the palace; "Ay sus Ruby, be mindful! We have guests!"
Whenever Ruby failed a certain training exercise in a session with her mother, she was met with a disappointed look; "Ay sus Ruby, what am I going to do with you?"
No matter what Ruby did, it always seemed to be wrong in the eyes of her mother.
But her mother wasn't on that boat with her. No... Raya was nowhere to be found. For the first day or so on the ship, Ruby found herself trying to stifle her laughter, always trying to make sure she didn't leave her room without her shoes (which proved surprisingly hard). But there was just one time where Ruby laughed a little too hard, she allowed herself to relax and her true laughter shone through; and there was no "Ay sus Ruby," That followed. That moment, Ruby's smile grew about ten times brighter than it normally was, and Ruby was quickly back to her true self.
There were still many times where she felt a small bit of nagging in the depths of her chest, but the more time she was without her mother the more it went away. What truly helped her was spending time with Naomi. Her em gai. Naomi never once scolded her for being true to herself, in fact she encouraged her to do so. Naomi was always her safe space, no matter what the circumstances were. When Ruby was with Naomi, it felt like they created a space that not even Raya could touch.
It only made sense that as all the students made their way to the trees, Ruby and Naomi were attached at the hip. Ruby, of course, told Naomi about the boy by the beach that she had been talking to (As Ruby always updated Naomi on every little development in her life). She made a comment about how he seemed kinda sad, maybe homesick, but Ruby thought he was kinda cute! Not a surprising development, as Ruby tended to find everyone cute upon meeting them.
The two continued talking until the staff started explaining the next event. What seemed to be very quickly, the staff members were calling out pairs. Naomi's pair was called before Ruby's, which prompted Ruby to give her a tight squeeze before Naomi walked to her partner. Ruby waited patiently to hear her name called, trying to pair names to faces as the staff called and pointed out more pairs.
"...and Ruby Heart." Ruby's ears felt like they perked up at her name, quickly turning to the staff member who said it. He was pointing at her before going back to his list. Darn it. Ruby hadn't heard who she was paired with, she wasn't paying enough attention. They definitely should've said her name first, that way she would be paying proper attention for BOTH the names. But by the looks of another student with a harness walking over to her, she'd guess he was her partner.
"Hi! I'm Ruby," She stuck her hand out to shake the taller student's hand (everyone was taller than her, she was 5'4), "This is awkward but I didn't catch your name when the guy announced it... What was it again?"
