Azuma Nagomi
Age: 22
Height: 6'2"
Weight: 150
Personality: Affable and easygoing, Azuma is a young man who doesn't like to obsess over the bad things in life. He always does things at his own pace and avoids stressful situations whenever possible. He enjoys being able to relax and indulge in his hobbies, so he's quick to ignore things that aren't of great importance. Life is short, especially in his line of work, so he wants to spend every day doing what makes him happy. He wants other people to do the same, so he often encourages his fellow corps members to take things easy when they can. He'll usually joke around with his comrades and invite them to dinner, wanting to help take their minds off the things bothering them.
Some may describe him as indolent and indifferent, but he takes his duties seriously. He's normally the type to take things slow, but when it's time to work, he'll get the job done as quickly and efficiently as possible, never losing his usual composure. When faced with something truly important, it's like a switch gets flipped. The relaxed air around him becomes intense and he operates like a machine, not sparing a single thought for anything that doesn't have to do with his objective. When his work is finished, he goes back to his usual self.
Despite being a member of the corps, Azuma doesn't have a strong hatred for demons or a burning desire to save the world. His circumstances just leave him with no other option, so he's begrudgingly spending his days killing and trying not to get killed. Still, even if his motivations can't compare to others, he's decided to see things through to the end.
Background: Azuma's mother was a ronin. The woman only took a break from her aimless journey when she needed some good food and good company. One man managed to satisfy both of those needs, and their meeting resulted in a pregnancy that wasn't discovered until they had already separated. Nine months later, she returned to the village where Azuma was conceived and left him with his father. She wasn't the type to settle down, and her lifestyle made it impossible to safely raise children, so she put her trust in the more responsible adult and set off once again.
Azuma only knew about his mother through his father's stories, but her absence didn't bother him much. Truth be told, he didn't have much interest in her or her skills with a blade. Rather than a life of duels and demons, he was far more interested in his father's work.
His father was a chef, and their home also served as a small eatery. Growing up surrounded by food and the villagers who stopped by to enjoy it, Azuma quickly decided that he wanted to follow in his father's footsteps. The world could be cruel and unforgiving, and many people lived in fear of the demons that claimed lives every day. However, something as simple as a delicious meal helped them forget about their bleak reality. For a moment, they could just smile and enjoy their lives, not having to think about a thing. Azuma was captivated by those smiles. He believed he could help more people with a kitchen knife than he could with a sword.
He spent years learning from his father, running the business by his side and experimenting with his cooking. He was always trying to create the best dishes and brew the perfect sake, never concerning himself with things like demons. Life was short, so he wanted to make it enjoyable. However, it was impossible to remain indifferent forever.
During a hunting trip, Azuma found himself at the mercy of a hungry demon. He did his best to fight back, but an ordinary knife was of little help. He was injured, left unable to run or resist. Ordinarily, he would've been easy prey, but his predator suddenly stopped. As blood poured from his wound, the demon seemed to be in a daze and lost their composure. Thanks to that brief moment of confusion, a wandering warrior was able to cleave the demon in half and save his life.
After bringing home the stranger with the intention of repaying their kindness with a meal, Azuma discovered that the person who saved his life was actually his mother who'd left years ago. Surprisingly, it wasn't a very emotional reunion. Instead of being concerned with each other and how their lives had been after separating, his parents were focused on Azuma's brush with death.
According to his mother, the reason for the demon's odd behavior was his blood. Like a strong liquor, it was intoxicating and capable of disrupting a demon's cognitive functions. That quality was enough to save his life, but it didn't mean his blood was a blessing. Marechi were highly sought after, considered a delicacy worth the lives of dozens of humans. Because of this, his mother never stayed in one place for very long, not wanting others to get caught between her and a demon looking for a high quality treat. Unfortunately, Azuma inherited her blood and the concerns that came with it.
After discovering what he was, Azuma left home and accompanied his mother on her travels. While he didn't want to leave his father alone, it was better than putting him at risk whenever he cut himself in the kitchen. He was forced to abandon his peaceful life and learn swordsmanship until he could protect himself. He had no passion for the blade, but he proved to be a quick study, inheriting his mother's talent along with her blood.
After years of training and slaying demons, Azuma became a proficient swordsman. Satisfied with his progress, his mother decided to drop him off in Fuji Village and enlist him in the Demon Slayer Corps, leaving him behind once again. While he still wasn't interested in following the path of the warrior, he was left with little choice.
He made the best of a bad situation and eventually reached the rank of master, but he never stopped thinking about his father back home.
Even now, Azuma thinks about returning to his peaceful life as a cook. While he is able to make the occasional visit back home, he eventually wants to be able to abandon the life of a demon slayer permanently and settle down. However, concerns over his blood make that dream difficult to achieve. In order to make it a reality, he's come to a simple conclusion. If demons were no longer a problem, he wouldn't have to worry about his blood. So, the simple thing to do is make sure they're no longer a threat. If that day comes, he'll be able to leave everything behind.
