- Personality
Deliana is, generally speaking, a fairly friendly and cheerful sort of girl. She sees no point in clinging to past bad experiences, and instead tries to push herself forward into the future with a bright outlook on life. When her biological passed when she was very little and her mother carried on after a short period of grieving as if life was much the same, Deliana asked her why. The answer she got would be the basis of her world view for years to come. Her mother told her, "If you dwell on things that hurt you or make you sad you'll spend your life making yourself sadder and more hurt by the minute, and someday you won't be able to remember what being happy feels like. But if you hold onto the good things, you'll make every step of your life one with bounce in it, and you'll carry yourself farther then you ever could if you were held down by misery." It's probably an embellished version, by now, given that Deliana barely remembers her mother at all, but the message was clear, and as the only part of her family she could keep with her (aside from Greenbear, of course) she's held onto it like a life preserver, and it's really helped her through the darker moments of her childhood before her dad, Kalvin, found her.
She tries to keep optimistic through all things, but it's not possible to be happy all the time, and trying would be foolish. Since she tries not to be sad or angry or the like for prolonged periods of time, she's decided that it's best to let her more negative emotions run their course passionately when they come up, so that they won't linger unfinished after the event is passed. Occasionally people see her as childish because of how freely she lets her emotions range, but it helps her stay more content and contained as a person if she lets them run the gauntlet when she feels the need to let loose.
She's also sometimes seen as childish due to her impulsiveness. She's just turned sixteen and she still likes to slide down the bannister - and will without any thought for what someone else might think. While she should be "acting her age" and showing some sense of decorum, she has no problem climbing a tree out in front of the school without worrying about the fact that she's wearing a skirt - she very rarely thinks before she acts when she sees something she wants to try or that she figures might be fun. And if she does pause to think, the thought is usually just, 'I've gotta try that!'
She's quite an ambitious little thing, and can be at times very competitive, a trait she finally found an outlet for in climbing. She's always been a bit of a spider monkey, with a tendency to go up rather than forward if the option arose, and when it became apparent that she'd need a sport to let out all of the energy she seemed to charge up during the school day, climbing was the obvious decision. Given that she lives in a rather urban area, she's more used to rock walls then free climbing and bouldering, or even just plain out door belaying. As such, she's started taking part in her local gyms competition climbing events - race events to reach the top before your opponent. It's hands down her favourite sport, and she thrills at the chance to go head to head with someone at the thing she's best at.
Next to climbing, her favourite activity is reading, and she can often be found up in a tree or on top of her dresser with a book. She just feels more at home high up, and once she's in her own up above world she quite loves to dive into a world of someone else's creation as well.
- History
Deliana was born to a mother very happy to finally have a little girl, and a father proud to have put another life into the world. Her brother was away, being driven to the hospital by a family friend as quickly as he could from school, which he had been made to stay at all day despite his mother going into labour. When he got there, he'd be surprised and delighted at a much younger sister, having grown past the age where an only child must automatically hate any addition to the family. At fourteen, he saw her more as his charge to protect then his sh*tty kid sister he had to take care of when his parents were at work. For a few years the family was quite happy, but about five years in Deliana's father passed away without warning. Unable to afford an autopsy, they never did find out what caused it, and his loss deeply shook what had once been a quite happy family. Deliana's brother Seamus, now aged nineteen, took off shortly after. Determined to make his own way in the world and not burden his mother any more, he promised to write once he found a place for himself, but never did. A year and a half later, a severe illness took Deliana's mother from her, the aged woman likely too tired from a grief she tried never to show in front of her children to fight it off. With her passing Deliana was left with no immediate family she could contact, and nothing to hold onto of her families other than her stuffed bear, lovingly named Greenbear despite his bright orange colouring.
Rather then be taken to an orphanage or put into foster care, Deliana hid away near their home, insisting that she'd stay there until her brother came back to take care of her. Unfortunately, at seven she really had no idea what she was doing when she tried to send him letters, or even where to send them, and since she didn't know to post a return address not one of them was even able to be sent back to her as undeliverable. Alone and half starved, Deliana tried to resort to pick pocketing, which she was utterly terrible at. Luckily for her, the first person she tried it on was a man named Kalvin Silverberg. Instead of taking her in to the authorities he took her home and offered her a full meal and a bath. After talking to her a while and learning that she had no parents (and that she staunchly refused to be taken away for someone else to care for) he told her she could come to him any time she needed food or shelter.
After several weeks of her returning night after night, Deliana began to stay permanently with Kalvin, and by the time she accidentally called him "daddy" while nodding off it was already too late to go back. They were family now, even if not by blood, and Kalvin quickly adopted the orphaned girl, who would come to look at Kalvin with more love and recognition then she could honestly hold for the biological father she couldn't quite recall.
While living on top of a bar might not seem like the best upbringing for a child of seven, it suited Deliana perfectly. She quickly became a feature at Kalvin's bar, coming home from school to be greeted by the patrons who were there for an early drink, and coming to see some of the more regular customers as a sort of extended family. Growing up in a male dominated environment, she gained herself a few unofficial big brothers who were quick to shut down any prying eyes of new customers who might care to look at her as she grew over the years. She also had the benefit of gaining an "uncle" and an "aunt" in the two employees under her father, and the sudden growth of her family of one plus bear to one plus bear plus dad plus aunt plus uncle plus bar was one she still feels truly blessed about.
From then on out her upbringing was both happy and secure, if a bit unconventional. She learned to belch louder than most guys at the bar when most girls were thinking about taking ballet, and once she was old enough to help she started helping out waitressing alongside Juliet before most kids were allowed to get a job (legal working age for people other than your parents being sixteen and all). Not to mention she could serve her friends any soda they had on tap from the super cool dispenser hose whenever they came over.
In high school now, Deliana is still as exuberant as she was in her middle and grade school years, and still gets a kick out of the soda hose.
