Actually, if you include the fact that some of them contain two or three rules, and I believe one or two with four rules... Somewhere around 120-175.

Well, those in the anime are basically what's needed to be known in order to effectively use the Death Note, but in order to perfect usage at the level of which Kira needed to reach in order to have actually succeeded, knowing all of those rules is pretty much a necessity. Also, rules that the actual person with the Death Note will know will be decided by the Shinigami, as those rules won't be written entirely in the book or anything.

Would you be on the side of the Death Note holder, would you be on the side of the police, etc.? IN Death Note, there's the Kira side, and then there's the L side. The L side is basically the side of the police, while the Kira side s basically the side of the murderer who uses the Death Note.
