Realistic or Modern Dead Winter

80995de925f01131c67a4e6b42ea9956.jpg

- Westfall Town -

" Stumbling in the dark . . . "

"Haaah . . . haah . . ." James breath came out in cold mists as he stumbled, shivering, around the undead infested town in the freezing night. He was covered in the stinky guts and remains of a ghoul he killed earlier. It was masking his smell and by the way the walking dead were ignoring him seemed to be working.

He was so depressed, tired and feverish, his manly tears and the blood seeping from his head wound had frozen on his face as he kept on walking to who knows where. One thought stuck in his numb, aching head. " Mion musn't see my corpse."

He didn't want to turn here and he didn't know when that was going to happen, so he hurried and ran, ran, ran, until he heard lesser ghouls and finally all around the quiet of winter enveloped him.

Exhausted, sick, infected, and hungry, he broke inside the nearest building and collapsed on the floor. The moon was casting a blue light upon the dusty carpet. James vision was getting blurry, he was burning with fever all over and a searing pain radiated from his bitten hand. It must be close now, the end . . . He tried to get some semblance of peace, but how could he?

He failed to develop a cure, he failed to protect his friends, he failed to rescue Samantha, and it was all his fault that his brother was now alone . . . At least Nicolai and Saiyuri escaped . . . they can continue developing the cure. They can meet up with his brother whom James was certain could still survive this. And then they can rescue Samantha . . . all things they can do without him. He worked his utmost best on progressing the cure, and he did not have regrets about that.

He was getting sleepy now. Quickly, before he lost consciousness . . . James took out his knife with the extended handle.

Well, I know I'd rather see this keep going than stop, even if I have been busy recently and failed to keep up with things. It'll be interesting to see how James lives.

"What day is it, Mion? . . ." muttered James blearily at the floor. " . . . what . . . speak louder, I can't hear you. No, I haven't shaved since yesterday. Haha, you're funny . . ."

He did not know how long he's been sick with the cold and with fever. It seemed like he's been coughing and going through stages of fever and chills forever. He didn't know where he was and who he was, and all the while his stomach growled in abject hunger. Sometimes he'd crawl to a musty sofa to chew on the tattered cloth, or eat the peeling wall paper. He was so weak. Death must be coming soon.

"Achoo!" James sniffed, curled up against the wall, shivering under a ray of golden sun. Was heaven taking him up? Funny, he didn't think he was going there after all his failures.

Oh, and look, an angel seems to be peering down from the clouds, her long brown hair cascading down her face. " . . . whar yohou live . . ." echoed her voice.

"Achoo!" repeated James. "Take . . . me . . ." he croaked at the angel. Suddenly his vision was obscured by something large and hairy that was sniffing him all over.

Bark, bark, bark!

"Oh . . . so dogs do go to heaven . . ." muttered James before sneezing one final time and then passing out.

That was a good read and I vote for three too. I'd rather want James to hear at least some bits of the chat or tell how many people there are than those nature sounds.

" 36 Days till Spring, Sunday, 12:00 p.m. "

" . . . and I'm telling you for the umpteenth time, that's the famous scientist James Cunning, so you can't just kill him."

"Hold it, hold it, you mean the son of that bloody slob who caused the apocalypse?"

James stirred awake. It was day time and he was weakly looking at the wooden bottom of another bed bunk. He smelled terrible and as he raised a hand to wipe the gunk off his eyes, there was a clang and saw that his limbs were hand-cuffed to the bed posts.

Was this a dream . . . ?

"Yes, and before you get angrier, last we heard he was working on a cure in some military base. That's why he didn't turn. " said a woman's muffled voice in a nearby room.

"How'd you know? For all we know he might turn any second, not all people turn into ghouls after ten seconds or, or, half an hour. I knew one fisherman who turned after two days!" said the gruff voice of a man.

"Yeah, well it's the second day already and he hasn't been showing the usual symptoms of the virus. If anything, apart from emaciation and that cold he had two days ago, he's alright!"

As the two people argued, James was slowly coming back to his senses. He remembered what happened. He got bit, he left his younger brother . . . and then . . . blank . . . how did he get here? That he didn't remember, nor had he heard these people's voices before, but one thing for sure was they were deciding his fate. He looked around. He was in a clean room with boarded up windows. There were shelves upon shelves of various frog-shaped trinkets, and one side was a book case filled with books. There was a mirror on a desk, and on the desk was a radio, some ammo, a disassembled pistol that was being cleaned, some make up, and three cans of expired dog food.

"Alright, I've heard enough." said another man, this time more authoritative and calm than the other two. "Bill, I understand that everyone is nervous that we have someone who got bit inside our colony, but if it's true that this man is who you say he is, Jacky, then we can't abandon him."

"There you go." said the lady smugly as though that settled it. The man named Bill grumbled incoherently, but didn't say anything. There were footsteps walking away, then a door opened and slammed, then all was silence.

James tried to speak and found that his throat was dry and hoarse. And so he clanged rhythmically on the bed to try to get the attention of whoever was on the other side.

The door opened and in came an older grizzled man with a pistol who immediately pointed it between James' eyes. James shook his head in fear, mouthing, "I'm not a ghoul, I'm not a ghoul!"

The man looked relieved and lowered his weapon. "It's alright." he said into the other room and a lady with brown hair tied in a ponytail peeked out from behind his shoulder. He turned back at James, smiling reassuringly. "Don't worry, it's alright, son, I'm not going to hurt you, it was just a precaution." the man approached him placing the gun on the desk, but stayed a good five feet away, and the lady followed.

"Are you hungry?" she asked James, concerned.

"Thirsty." whispered James croakily. "Sugar water, please . . ."

"Got it." she left immediately, leaving James alone with the older man.

"The name's Frank Netter," said the man, "you're in my safehouse in my daughter's room in Krusty Colony --- don't ask about the name, trust me we've been trying to change it, but when you've got a huge billboard with the words Krusty Burger on the building where you're staying, people tend to call your place that." he chuckled. "Are you James Cunning?" he added on a serious note.

"Yes."

"Do you remember how you got here?"

"No, last thing I know I was inside a house. I was . . . trying to kill myself, but I didn't have the courage to do it."

"Why'd you try to kill yourself?"

"I got bit." James looked at his left thumb. It had been bandaged, but the edge of a healing scar peeked from underneath.

"Did you develop a cure, is that why you didn't turn?"

I'd say 1 is the best choice but something in me wants to choose 2. We can't know what these people would do if he says there's still no cure, there will be more suspicion about why he didn't even turned? And also, if he says the cure is with his brother, he can ask for help to find him since there's no way other people would help a stranger in this kind of scenario, given that they will be putting their lives at risk. But then, if we choose 2, the time would come that they would know that there's no cure. Then I don't know, what do you guys think? It's a matter of what's more important right now. @Fezzes @TheCountryWarrior

I reckon 3 is obviously the best choice, guys.

4. "Not yet. I got separated from the main group when we were attacked, managed to get away to here. We haven't got a cure yet, but I reckon I've got a solid lead on it now, if I keep on being human. Some kind of natural immunity... and with human DNA and antibodies..." James said half-truthfully.

Leave out Mion (Iunno, I just reckon that's right. Keep a card or two, since we're not fully sure of who they are), and strike a balance between saying there's no cure, but we reckon we just got a whole lot closer. Because we probably did. In lieu of that, 1. Lying about the cure IS going to bite us in the ass.

" 36 Days till Spring, Sunday, 12:07 p.m. "

"No." said James, facingt the bottom of the top bunk in a slightly shamed voice. "We haven't developed a cure yet, but I've got a solid lead on it now, if I keep on being human. I have a high density of antibodies that slow the replication of the virus. " he lied smoothly as though stating a fact that he's known all his life. "We haven't successfully transferred my high resistance to a human host, but we've lowered the aggression of one infected mouse . . ." he raised his bandaged hand.

"I've never been bitten before, we've always used weaker strains of the virus on my blood to try and create a vaccine, never on that much saliva on the usual strain. Do you have a cough mask, anything to cover my mouth so that my spit won't fly into your eyes?" he added, glancing sideways at the grizzled man, but making sure his mouth was just facing the top bunk.

"I'll have one made." said Frank. He looked like he believed what James had said and from his eyes James could see that here was a rare honorable man who was thinking on how best to support him. It was the same look James' subordinates would give him showing that they want to help with the cure, even if it was difficult, because they want to save lives.

The woman with long hair came back with a glass of cloudy liquid and a straw. "Here, your sugar water." Frank blocked her way with a hand.

"Don't go near. You can't let his saliva get into your eyes when he talks." he covered James mouth with a cloth and slipped under the straw and let him drink from the glass himself.

"Thank you." said James later. His stomach growled, but he ignored it. He had to be patient and reintroduce food to his body slowly. From the way he was feeling he could tell that he was undergoing marasmus, or severe malnutrition. There was a big chance his body will reject food if he ate solids immediately. He looked at the lady. "Were you the one who rescued me?"

"Yes. It's Sunday now, about twelve in the afternoon. My name is Harriette Netter, though you can call me 'Harry', most people around here do. What happened to you?" she asked curiously.

***

[1] - "Now, now. Let him have some rest." said Frank. (James focuses on regaining his strength)

[2] - "We were attacked." began James. (Lies some more, feeding them with half-truths that kept Mion out of the story. James purpose now must be to survive by persuading these people to help him, get back to his brother who's hopefully found the others, and find out whether the people hunting him have heard that he's here.)

[3] - James couldn't help but notice that Harriette had beautiful stormy grey eyes.
