History

  • You can find hints of humans with useful mutations through out antiquity but the rate at which mutants were born increased exponentially in the early 50's. And with it came an intense world wide paranoia: What was causing it? Nuclear weapon, pesticides? No real answers have been found. And more importantly what would become of the world if these powers were weaponized?

In the mid 70's after some nasty international conflicts where mutant soldiers were deployed to devastating effect the UN declared mutant servicemen a war crime in and of itself. That’s where the Human Mutation Detection Device comes in. Originally, it was designed to filter and screen servicemen internationally. This categorization of mutants as living weapons and the ability to screen for it had varying cultural effects through out the world. The technology was invented and patented by a small American company call GrayCris.

For a short time in the 80’s America became a hot spot for mutant immigration, as they were leading in research and medical care in the field. There was no restriction on Mutants until this wave of immigration kicked off America's xenophobia--if mutants were weapons why were inviting dangerous foreigners with unknown powers to live among us? The first set of restrictions in the mid 80’s claimed a focus on public safety, banning mutants from public space where guns and other weapons were also restricted such as concerts, sports games, and theaters. Later came airports, schools, and after a landmark case individual stores earned the right to screen with HMDD at the doors at their choosing. As a mutant there are many places you may find yourself restricted from, sometimes at random when its comes to private business.

This has lead to vacillating societal outlooks on mutants, ranging from various political factions and religions shunning them or embracing them, the state itself constantly trying to prove it's not trying to build an apartheid state by creating various programs, business loans, and funding various medical research labs for a cure. Its been an up and down struggle for the last thirty years but mostly being a mutant is still a bad hand to dealt.

While a person's mutant status Is protected under HIPPA, there is a whisper network of doctors who are willing and capable of helping with the less glamorous mutations that cause serious health problems. Some of these doctors have recently begun quietly offering patients a drug that suppress their powers for ~24 hours at a time.

Landmarks

  • GrayCris Central Factory: Built in the late 70’s this factory is where HMDDs are assembled and shipped. As a PR Campaign in the 90's the company began employing mostly Mutants during a downturn of mutant employment. It is the main employer of Dead River.

The old mill: The mill went under in the 90’s and most of the old mill workers began to work for the GrayCris Factory, bringing their union with them. There was some friction for a time between the locals and the influx of Mutant employees who had come to work for the factory, but the much needed union effort was a galvanizing force. The old mill was never demolished and it still stands. The local kids like to say its haunted. It's a great place to meet up in the middle of the night.

Dead River Haunted House: Dead River's one and only tourist claim to fame. The Halloween season goes hard, with numerous town festivities. But the big fake haunted mansion up on the hill is the reason for the season. Year round it doubles as restaurant and escape room. In the fall they employ a couple dozen full time scarers, with a corn maze and 21+ haunted trails. It's what the rest of New Hampshire knows Dead River for.

State Liquor Store: A staple of any small town just off the highway.

Fireworks store: Across the way from the state liquor store there is a year round fireworks store.

St Bridget's Hospice: Run by Airn McKay, an Irish immigrant with a mutant son. She is a licensed death doula and specializes in end of life care for mutants. She also more quietly helps runaways, young mothers, and those with difficult powers.

Resting Waters Funeral Home: Run by Feliks Alkaev, who is also the coroner for Dead River and some of the surrounding smaller townships.

Dead River Elementary School: A small school for the local children. It has a sad fenced in playground and serves k-6. 7-12 are bused out to a larger school in the area.

GrayCris Clinic: Employees of GrayCris get free treatment here but they also serve the rest of the community. The mutant whisper network about the quality of care received here by mutants is not good.

General Store: The only gas station and grocery store in town.

Dunks: When this Dunkin Donuts was built three years ago it was a big deal! The coffee there sucks, but hey thats our dunks! Almost entirely staffed by a rotating cast of high schoolers.

Shelly’s Leg Auto Body: Legend tells that Shelly was the DRMC’s first president and she opened the mechanic shop with the settlement money from losing her leg at GrayCris factory. It is staffed by a rotating cast of probies and patched members. It is functionally their clubhouse. They service bikes and cars.

The Cabin: This is Charlies little house out on the edge of Dead River. It may technically be in the Township. It's up out of the way and it's not uncommon for her to call chairs and patched members out to the cabin to have a serious conversation. At any given time she’s probably got two or three probies couch surfing cause she has a bleeding heart.

Police Station: This little police station employs three whole policemen and exists because GrayCris gave the town the money for it when it incorporated in the 70's. It has not be updated since.

Ian’s Pizza: The only pizza joint in town.

The Montana: A bar just off the highway, frequented by truckers, DRMC, and the rougher sorts you might find in town.

Betsy’s Diner: A small diner. The food is terrible. Its the only diner tho, across the street from the Montana and the gas station.

Half Bottle Pub: Another bar, this one closer to the factory. Low key. Watch the game. Beers after work. We don’t want trouble here. Better food than Betsy’s but they don’t advertise.

Other Factions & NPCs

  • The local mob, made up of various superpowered entities. Wants the superpowered members of the DRMC to work for them. Allies, but like. Nervously. Bigger fish on the crime hierarchy. Based out of Boston proper.

*Naiysu Quill: head of the Aurora Syndicate. Tiny, albino, unfailingly polite.
*Devin Murphy: Quill's second in command and protégé. Tiny, freckled, eminently punchable.
*Seph: small time Syndicate contact in Manchester. The guy your DARE class warned you about.
