Darkness Rising (One x One with infamousdot)

He finished his meal in peace before his attention was drawn by the light of a fire. He moved with a cat light grace though the underbrush to the edge of the clearing. Then he just chuckled at the sleeping form." She really has to little fear but maybe she needs to learn some." He muttered as he moved slowly and silently across the clearing to the opposite side of the fire.

Katrina slept on, stirring only slightly when he sat across from her. She kept her tail curled around her, the deadly spade gleaming in the firelight. She looked peaceful, even as her massive wings curled around her like a blanket.

He could only chuckle at her as lifted a fist and placed it on the ground softly. " Dragon crusher." He muttered and lifted it to reveal a small hole. Silently he got up and moved to a edge of the clearing. He looked back one last time before stomping his foot down, shaking the ground slightly. Suddenly the ground gave way and a 15 foot wide by 20 foot deep hour appeared under Katrina. He just chuckled as he watched.

Katrina suddenly felt as if she were falling...she snapped out of sleep and she gasped as she tried righting herself. She twisted and tumbled in the air and she landed painfully on one of her wings. She half-roared half-screamed in pain as she felt something snap and she grabbed the wounded appendage with shaking arms, wondering what the hell just happened.

Part of him knew he should feel bad but she had been so confident only to sleep unguarded. Still it would do her some good to be humbled a bit and he knew he need to sometimes. Slowly he walked to the edge of the hole and looked down smiling. " You know sleeping in a unguarded unprotected place can lead to death. It seems it was not that bad this time." His words were cold as he watched her.

Katrina grit her teeth, trying to keep tears from forming as she nursed her broken wing. She looked up and a rage formed deep within her when she saw the man from before, "Why don't you leave me the HELL ALONE!" She snarled. Who did this guy think he was? She was perfectly capable of taking care of herself, "I've survived this long, alright?! I don't need your-" She flinched as moving to her feet caused a jarring pain in her wing, "You bastard! You broke my wing!" She roared, her pupils becoming mere slits in her eyes.

He slowly sat down on the edge of the whole looking down at her. He look at her wing for a moment his eyes solid silver for a moment then they returned to normal looking like a dragons eyes for a second. He looked around for a moment then back down at her. " It will heal besides it can't be the worst injury you have ever had." He said with a knowing voice having seen her scars and she had many.

Katrina growled, "Yes, but it's my wing." she snarled. For a moment, she calmed down and she moved to the opposite side of the hole and started to climb up, her claws on both her feet and her hands digging into the dirt. She used her tail as a bracer, digging it deep into the earth before climbing up more and removing it before repeating the same thing over again. Eventually she got to the top, her broken wing aching more and more with each second. "Leave me alone." She hissed to the man before making her way into the forest, her anger still apparent.

"Fine but I would not recommend going off deeper into the forest and set that wing." He slowly rose as he slipped into the forest heading back to town. He needed to find out exactly when this all had started. He had a feeling it had started with weather and crop failure. He was beginning to sense a god at work here.

Katrina growled in response. "I am going to as soon as I'm far enough from you!" She snapped. She found a good place and sat down in a clearing, chopping off a branch from a nearby tree and reaching in her satchel to grab bandages to wrap and splint the wing in. "Stupid man not leaving me alone, trying to get some peace and quiet and he's causing more harm than good..." She murmured angrily as she straightened her wing with some difficulty.

His return to town was a quiet one and for the most part uneventful. He met with a couple stares here and there as he slipped into town, his battered cloths probable the cause. He asked around for a hour or two till he final arrived at a old building at the center of town. He was here to speak to the town historian, keeper of records or what ever they call her. She was old from what he had gathered and had many records of the towns start. He wanted to know about the old gods of the land and see if any might be returning.

As Katrina finished patching her wing up as best as she could, she gave a sigh. Her supplies were running low...she made her way towards the village with a cloak thrown over her wings to hide them. As she passed through the town, she didn't notice her 'friend' making his way to the historian's. Instead she concentrated on getting what she needed and setting off again by foot. The wounded wing would keep her from flying for quite some time, and she was extremely annoyed by this.

He felt small for a moment as the ancient oak door opened and a woman beyond her time emerged from beyond the door. She looked him over for a few moments before ushering him in. " It is always nice to see someone my age. Come I have tea brewing." Her voice held a power about it that made him feel compelled to follow, even if her words gave him caution. He closed the door silently behind him as he followed her though the ancient home to a waiting room in a library. She motioned for him to sit, he did, then motioned for him to pour them some tea from an old copper kettle, he did without question.

"You know it has been a long time since I have entertained guest. No what would a handsome man like you want from a old frail lady like me?" Her words grew softer and power that compelled him slipped away. He took up the tea silently and sipped it before speaking. " I have come to find out the names of the old gods of the land and if any have been wronged by this village. Also this is wonderful tea." He smiled as he watched the woman on edge.

Katrina bought some bandages as well as some provisions for her trip. Now that she was wounded, her hunting wasn't going to be nearly as easy. And she didn't trust this town enough to go to a healer. As she grabbed her food and waterskins, she glanced over at the historian's...what was that man playing at? She didn't know his name, nor did she know who or what the heck he was. The power he displayed was incredible...but was he good or evil, or a neutral party in all of this? She wasn't sure...

She silently sipped her own tea before smiling at him in a way that made him shiver. " The old gods did not really have any names other than the forces they commanded. Though one does come to mind as being wrong by the people of this land." Slowly the old woman moved across the room and pull a large book bound in leather from a shelf. She return, placing it in front of him before taking a seat. He gazed at the book for a moment before opening it and flipping through the ancient pages.

" His name is Shade and that is a history of the towns worship to him, as well as their sacrifices." Her words were cold as he flipped to the end and looked up. "This end near two hundred years ago. What happened?" She took another sip of tea and slowly place the cup down. " Another more gentle god came and convinced the people of this land that the price for Shades protection, his gifts, were to high. So the people stopped, shade was forgotten, and his powers faded from the land. So the people forgot and he faded from memory to myth." She smiled as watched him carefully.

He closed the book watching her with knowing eyes. " You never said who the new god was?" She just smiled and took the book from him. " Just some nameless god of history and law, nothing to worry about there." He gazed at her for a few moment then slowly stood bowing. " I will take my leave." He did not pause to let her say anything before he slipped from the waiting room and then the home. "Just some nameless god." He muttered.

Katrina was just heading out of the village when he left the historian's. She was humming a little tune as her wings remained hidden under her cloak and her satchel remained full of food and water. She had also bought a little trinket as well, an amulet with a dragon engraved in it that now hung gently around her neck. Her money stores were slightly lightened, and she knew that in the next town she would have to pick up some bounties or hunting jobs to refill the moneybag.

He did not dare look back as he quickly left the town behind. He could only guess who that old woman was but he was neither old enough to think himself about a worshiped land god, or young enough to thing himself stronger. Still a abandoned land god was another story so as he slipped into the woods his eyes changed. The pupils turned to slits and the iris became a swirl of silver and white. His view of the world changed to as color and shape was stripped away leaving him with the true beauty of the world. He could see the flow of life/energy as it rained from the sky, filling the trees, and made its way into the earth. He could see it dance on the wind, beat in the hearts of animals, and change hands from one thing to the next with such intensity it was almost blinding.

As Katrina walked a few yards ahead of the man, her tail swished back and forth. She looked at her busted wing and sighed, wishing she could fly. She knew she would have to hunt eventually, and that would be a lot harder without the use of her wings. However, she still had her tail, which was one of her most valued weapons.

Diverting from the trail, she made her way towards the thinning-out forest to walk on the plains. Normal humans would stick to the trail due to wildcats and wolves, or even bandits. But she was confident enough to stray away, and this way she could allow her appendages to be free without any repercussions from humans.

He noticed the girl from before leaving the trail and moving out of the forest but did nothing to stop her. It was best if she was out of the way if a fight broke out and she had an attitude, though he might have been to blame. He paused for a moment as life moved within the shadows around him but did not manifest itself. " Good luck girl you may need it." He muttered as he moved deeper into the forest where the shadows grew thicker.
