How does this work?


The Black Sun Knife, seemingly the least of the objects in the vault of the Death Lord, was in truth among the most worthy. It was a relic of the Wyld Hunt, as old as the Great Uprising. A nameless Prince of the Earth took it up from the blood stained alter of the solars and struck down the Anathema as the blasphemer had struck down ten thousand men in sacrifice. The last blood it spilt stains the knife still, having turned to gold as thanks for being freed from the corrupt flesh that had held it. Even so it is not much to look at, a shard of jagged obsidian not even a foot long.


Had it been available, it would have anchored the salt ward and the exorcism together, banishing the dead from across the city and binding the Mask of Winters. Or perhaps not, the truth will never be known now.


As for Jann, what if the raids were partially timed to draw the Deathknights away from the city to leave the Mask alone?

I could fully go with the fact that as she was raiding the outlying villages she heard of a plot to bring down the death lord. She could have planned the next attack to be a distraction, but the Death Lord sent one of his Knights to fight rather than just an undead captain. It could have escalated farther than she wanted it to go, not knowing how strong the Knight was.
