Damsels and Dragons

JayTee

Eight Thousand Club
You start to wrap things up for the day. Your job is a simple one, but satisfying. Pay is good, benefits are nice, and the cute secretary has been friendlier with you than normal. You're thinking of asking her out once your shift is done for the day.

Speaking of quitting for the day, what is your job?

>Technical support.

>Sales representative.

>Security guard.

Well, whatever it is, you're well suited for it.

Punching out, you pause and engage in some small talk with your coworkers. The local college football team was creamed in the last game, and many of you are lamenting this fact. It's the start of the new season, and some are superstitious and view this as an indicator of things to come.

Do you feel this way?

>Yes.

>No.

Good chat, but It's getting late and time to go.

You move quickly down the hall, rushing a bit as you don't want to get caught in traffic. Unfortunately that's when it happens.

Rounding a corner at speeds just under jogging, you accidentally smash in to an intern carrying a stack of documents. The paperwork that the intern was carrying flies everywhere, and you both take a moment to collect yourselves after that sudden impact. The intern is scrambling to pick things up and muttering apologies to you.

Do you help the guy?

>Yes.

>No.

Whatever you decide, you move on.

Finally, before you head out for the day, you decide to say hello with the cute secretary. The two of you engage in a smattering of pleasantries, talking about work for the day and sharing mutual complaints about certain coworkers. It's a very tame conversation, and you're not sure if she's interested in your or not.

Ask her on a date?

>Yes.

>No

OOC

Alright. Here we go. @Cirno @Anomaly @simj22 @Killigrew @Teh Frixz @SunnyFlare @Syndrome @ anyone else.

As you may have guessed by the name, this game draws heavily on DnD, with a few twists here and there.

1) I AM THE GUARDIAN OF THE NIGHT, I AM HE WHO WATCHES OVER THOSE WHO ARE WEAK AND MEEK, I AM...A GENERIC SECURITY GUARD.

2) SUPERSTITIONS ARE FOR THE WEAK-MINDED. I DISPELL SUCH FEEBLE THOUGHTS FROM MY MIND BY SQUEEZING MY EYES SHUT AND THINKING ABOUT MY HAPPY PLACE.

3) WHAT KIND OF QUESTION IS THAT? I ASSIST HIM WITH GUSTO!

4) sure, i guess? 'Twould be a waste if I didn't...I think? REJECTION IS SECOND NATURE TO A SECURITY GUARD SUCH AS I!

>Technical Support

(It requires schooling, plus having some electric, science, mathematics knowledge would be handy, not to mention interesting in a world of magic.)

>No

(Nothing wrong with superstition, but I'd like a character more likely to brush things off than not.)

>Yes

(It was kind of his fault anyway. No running in the halls!)

>No.

(No need to make things awkward. Save the asking out for a better time perhaps?)

>Technical Support

(The only job I can properly do amongst the 3 choices.)

>Yes

(Assuming that local college football team is the champion for the previous season.)

>Yes

(Poor sod and I'm feeling good today!)

>No

(That was a bit fast, isn't it?)

1 > Technical Support! (While Security Guard would give him at least a vague amount of experience with, uh, protecting people, technical support almost always ends up being amusing.)

2 > No. Having a non superstitious hero will probably lead to some good old fashioned denial later on, and that's always interesting.

3 > I mean, I guess?

4 > No. (He'll probably be whisked away into the world of fantasy before anything productive comes of that possible relationship.)

( I sell firearms and firearm accessories )

2> Nope. Superstition and myth are the hobgoblins of small minds and I refuse to partake. I won't even throw salt over my shoulder after spilling it.

3> Yes but not going to make anything of it. I'm not a dick after all.

4> Nope. Don't swing that way. Besides, she seems like a bit of a basic bitch.

>Security guard. Literally quitting for the day after making night to morning rounds.

Security guards may know some bureaucratic things too, like getting identification papers sorted out, fingerprinting, dealing with other companies or agencies for background checks. (While being that nice guy who checks all the floors after a power outage and making sure no one got stuck in the elevator. Sh-shut up I'm not drawing from real-life interactions.)

Do you feel this way?

>No.

Wouldn't do so well getting spooked on graveyard shifts.

Do you help the guy?

>Yes.

Ask her on a date?

>No. Not the weekend yet.

Speaking of quitting for the day, what is your job?

- Tech support. Nothing's more fun than dealing with hundreds of angry old people who don't know how to reset their router.

Do you feel this way?

- No. I don't even care about college football, all that much, I just keep up with it so I am not confused when my co-workers talk about it.

Do you help the guy?

- No. It was his fault entirely, and I'm not being paid for this. They want me to clean up someone else's mess, they can pay me.

Ask her on a date?

- No. That's Leena, she's way too much of a gossip. I doubt we'd finish a single date before everyone in the office began talking about it.

Do you help the guy?

- Yes. It was his fault, but there's no reason I can't be altruistic. I'm done for the day, what could I possibly need to rush for? He didn't even drop that much.

Ask her on a date?

- No. That's Gina, the office New Age nut and conspiracy theorist. She's always rambling on about aliens and the Illuminati and all that bullshit. The only good thing I can say about her beliefs is that she fortunately hasn't touched the racist/anti-Semitic "conspiracies" yet (like ZOG and sovereign citizenship).

Alright so I think I'm officially going to call the voting closed at this point. I hope to have a post up for you all within a few days. Apologies for the delay, but so far there's been maybe.... three pay periods at work where I haven't worked overtime, and the trend seems to be continuing with gusto.

>Job: Technical Support.

As a child, you always had a fondness for puzzles and logic games. AS an adult, you carried your skill at thinking in to the field of computer security, maintaining the myriad of programs and protocols designed to keep intruders out and your company's data safe. In your spare time, you've taken up jogging to keep fit and counteract the fact that you sit at a desk all day, leading you to be a healthy and fit individual.

Gain +5 Intelligence, +3 Constitution and +1 Charisma

>No.

You've never been one to believe in things that can't be proven, and you exchange some goodbyes with your coworkers, glossing over their superstitious comments about the ultimate fate of the team. It doesn't really matter to you in the long run what they believe. The records show that the team always has a rough starting season, but eventually they get their act together and pull off some good wins, which is probably what's going to happen this time as well.

Perk Acquired Clarity of Thought - Your rejection of the irrational has granted you sound mind and spirit. Dogma and rhetoric have no effect on you, and you see though falsehoods more easily.

>Yes.

You've always been a decent person, or at least tried to be. You've gained a reputation as a person of integrity. The intern thanks you profusely as you help him pick up the sheets of paper. You give him a cautious warning about running in the halls, but don't reprimand him too much beyond that before parting ways.

Gain +1 Altruism

Perk Acquired: Positive Impressions - A good attitude and a kind word or deed go a long way. People are more willing to trust and take you at your word.

>No.

During the conversation, you realize that it would be foolish to ask her out. She may be really cute, but she's not normally someone you would associate with. Controlling your impulses, you bid her a good evening and head out for the night.

Gain +1 Discipline

Perk Acquired: Cool as a Cucumber - You conducted yourself with a poise and control. When faced with emotionally stressful or trying circumstances, you maintain your composure better than others.

With the day done and all business settled, you make your way in to the parking lot and get in to your car. It's an old reliable machine that you've had since you were young. Multiple parts have been replaced three time over, the interior is beaten and worn and the passenger side window wont roll down anymore, but it keeps you moving from place to place and it's never broken down or had serious problems that warranted replacing it.

Frankly, you're quite fond of the old girl.

Getting in, you start up the engine and take off down he road. The night is young, and you're debating heading to the club to meet up with some friends. On the other hand, you know tomorrow is going to be a busy day, so maybe you should head home for an early rest.

Rounding the corner and mulling things over, you see a bright light ahead of you down the road. Someone no doubt has their high beams on, and you put your hands in front of your eyes to try and block the light. Hopefully they'll realize there is an oncoming vehicle and turn them off.

...Nope. The jerk keeps their headlights shining bright. Swearing under your breath, you anxiously wait for the approaching car to pass you by. The lights get brighter and brighter as you get closer, to the point where even your own attempts at blocking the light fail. You slow down in an attempt to drive more safely, only for the light to become so bright you can't see anything anymore. Seriously, who makes headlights that bright?

Then something strange happens.

The street, once smooth asphalt, gives way to a rough road, as though you were driving off-road. You don't remember there being any construction on the way to work however, and, not willing to risk an accident with the blinding lights and a rough road, pull over in to a stopping point and what for the light to pass.

After a moment it does, and with it goes the city itself.

Gone are the skyline and tall buildings. In their place is a wide field, interspaced with trees and hillocks. Gone are the neon lights and billboards, only clear skies dotted with sparse clouds and stars remain.

The moon is still there, though.

Except, uh. There are two of them.

What do you do?

>Panic (-1 vote)

>Check your cell phone.

>Get out and look around.

It means it goes against your personality that the players have defined, so it takes a -1 penalty to any votes assigned to it. If 3 people vote for it, it'll only be considered to have 2 votes.

It's a way to keep the character's personality consistent (something very difficult to do in a Quest game), but also provide opportunities for growth and change (such as if enough people vote for a penalized option frequently, it may become the new normal)

As a techie, an attempt to get GPS coordinates will confirm whether or not there are Earth satellites about and therefore whether the two freaking moons are a hallucination. Then give yourself permission to panic.

I deleted an option that no one had voted for and added something more interesting. Feel free to edit your post and change your vote if you want.

Also, I think i'm going to try and shoot for a weekly update schedule, probably around the beginning of the week (sunday/monday/tuesday).

>Check cell phone

Being a technical person, your phone is fully charged, optimized for ease of use and eager to obey your instructions!

Sadly, the most useful it's functions at the moment depend almost exclusively on having a wireless connection. GPS, call signal strength and even internet connection all give you a big fat nothing. Thankfully, a few of the offline apps are still working. The compass app depends on the phone's own internal systems, and once calibrated (which happened when you first opened it all those years ago) it continued to point north. Or at least, what the phone thinks is north.

Other functions like the light, note taking app, camera and calculator all work, but aside from the light, none of them are of much use to you at the moment. Sighing and leaning back in your car seat, you consider your next move.

At the moment, your immediate thought is to simply lock the car, roll up the windows and go to sleep until daybreak. Wandering around in the middle of the night would be a fools's errand, regardless of the light provided by the twin moons.

Oh yeah, the moons.

Frankly, they scare the shit out of you. Two moons is impossible, you know for a fact that there is and always was and will be a single, large grey-white moon in the sky. These moons on the other hand, are much larger than the one you are familiar with. What's worse is that they're the wrong color. One is a soft blue-green, and the other, smaller moon is... a white-red, almost pink color.

You don't want to look at them, they aren't natural and shouldn't exist. They can't exist!

Feeling small twinges of anxiety starting to overcome you, you force yourself to calm down and avoid panicking. It's okay, you tell yourself. It's fine. You can get though this if you just calm down and think.

It works, too. The panic recedes and you feel yourself slipping in a calmer, more focused state.

Then off in the distance, something explodes.

Fire, thunder and lighting split the night air, shouts of bloodlust and clashes of metal can be heard off over the nearest hillock, with monstrous cries unlike anything you've ever heard before echoing in the distance.

In a semi-panicked reflex, you go to the glove box and grab the small utility knife inside for protection. it's barely longer than your hand and meant for use as a tool than as a weapon, but right now it's all you have.

The sounds of what can only be described as a battle continue on, just out of your range of vision, and don't show any signs of stopping. After the initial burst of panic, a small mixture of fear and curiosity begin to take over.

There are clearly human voices shouting in the distance, although, distance, geography and other sounds of battle make what they're shouting indistinct. Part of you wants to know what the heck is going on, and who is fighting.

What do you do?

>Go investigate the ongoing battle.

>Wait for it to subside, then investigate.
