Cover art for Sidereals posted

Well, sigh. I'm not surprised, but it had been a hope. I posted my opinion on the first thread about this cover (which Vanman linked), and they haven't significantly changed anything I commented upon. Meh.

Oh, and the lady with the flat feet is the Chosen of Journeys. The guy in the lower left with the seven section staff is the Chosen of Secrets, so ya know. At least, I'm assuming that that's who StarHawk was commenting about wierd feet on was the lady in orange...I could be wrong. Apologies if I am.

I'm sure it's been commented on before, but it makes me laugh that the Chosen of Serenity has a serious "I'm gonna bash your damn head in mutha-fukka!" pose.

No, its more of a "I'm gonna bash your face in mutha fukka, but I'll do it serenely."

Uh, no. Green = Secrets. Yellow = Journeys.
*looks back through books* Seems so. Somebody lied to me at some point about Mr. Seven Section Staff and I didn't check to see if they were right. Ah well. *shrugs* I said I could be wrong.

...until you look closely at her grip; then it's a "I'm gonna snap my fucking wrist, motherfucker!" pose.

The WW art director has said that in the larger image the "backwards thumb" can be seen to be some sort of jewelry, with the actual thumb out of sight.

Thumbs don't even factor into the equation. Her fucking hand is at a 90 degree angle to her arm.

Maybe we're talking about something else. I was talking about the white haired person's right arm. Are you talking about the same person's left arm? If so, I can do that with my arm hand with no trouble. It's not comfortable, but I'm not double jointed or anything, so it must be within the bounds of a typical forearm and wrist.

There are two white haired people in the picture...that doesn't necessarily help. I believe Flagg's referring to Iron Siaka, not Mr. Journeys, though. (Siaka's the white haired woman with the mace above the guy I believe you're looking at, with the Seven Section Staff?) Both of her wrists are seriously screwy around that mace. I referred to this the first time this was pic was posted, thus:

Iron Siaka: Firstly, nobody in their right mind would be attacking from the position she's in unless they wanted to fall flat on their face and look ridiculous. One does not jump with their knees pointed in opposite directions as if they were doing a sumo-squat. Also, her right wrist either has a couple extra joints in it or is completely dislocated from her hand. The left is more managable, but only if she wants to break it upon the mace's impact with anything. Wrists don't much care for bending that far backwards most of the time. One also doesn't choke up that much on a weapon's hilt if they want to keep hold of it when it hits something (or, in other words, her hands are too close together to be holding it believably).

They still haven't fixed it. A wrist does not have that many joints in it, I'm sorry, nor do they take kindly to being folded backwards. *chuckles* Amusingly, I commented about the uncomfortable position of the Journies guy, too, but you are correct that it is possible, just painful.

Please submit your improved cover art to the WW creative team.  I'm sure they'd all love to see what you guys could come up with that's better.

Why is that always the response when someone critiques a piece of art or says they don't like a particular piece? Why does this have to be a requirement for commentiing on art? If I don't like a movie, do I have to produce and/or submit a new and improved or a better rendition of said movie? I don't think it's a requirement to produce a superior piece of art, no matter the medium, in order to critique and/or offer opinions.

My comment was directed at the pointlessly detailed criticism which is pouring out of this thread.  If you want to say "it's my right to critique even if I can't do better, and probably can't even manage only a little worse", hey, that's fine.  I support that.

Eh, the only reason I actually got that detailed in the first place, which I did the first time this was posted (in that other thread...I assume people remember it :P ) was because people were complaining about people criticizing something and not knowing what they were talking about. I do know. Now, as I said before, I know I cannot make a piece of art that has better quality when it comes to detail than this picture. However, I can draw people better anatomically than this picture represents them. *shrugs* What I drew certainly wouldn't be of quality enough to even begin to consider for a cover, but hey. I never said I was a good artist.

However, I really don't feel like arguing over a silly point like this...and I will also once again point out that saying someone can't criticize a piece of art unless they could do better is like saying someone can't complain about someone's singing unless they can sing better than them. Most art critics aren't that great artists, after all. They just understand what makes art aesthetically pleasing, but often aren't that good at actually making art themselves. Either way, it all boils down to a feeling that this piece of art has issues with anatomy that cause people to not like it as much. And that's all that really matters to me in the end. The details of why are much less important.
