COLD JULY.
an advanced, southern gothic coming-of-age murder mystery.
JUST A REMINDER,
FIRST— Follow all of RPN’s listed rules. Treat others in this roleplay well to facilitate a comfortable, creative, and fun environment for everyone.
SECOND— There are going to be six people total in this roleplay, myself included, meaning there are five open slots. Placement in this roleplay is not awarded on a first-come, first-serve basis. I’ll be judging each of the characters on their quality and depth, and their owners on their writing quality.
THIRD— This is going to be a strictly advanced roleplay, where good grammar, correct spelling, and tantalizing writing is an expectation. You should be able to comfortably write 500-800 words per post, at the very minimum.
FOURTH— Be prepared to chat on Discord. I find it’s a very helpful platform to have quick discussions about characters, plotting, and it’s a low pressure environment where we can all chat with each other. I will make a server for all the accepted members of this roleplay once I have determined who’s going to be in it.
NOW, ABOUT THEM KIDS.
AS YOU'RE WRITING—
All applications are due by 12pm PST on Friday, May 22nd. Please contact me as early as possible if you need an extension.
Keep in mind that this is a high school-aged roleplay. These characters should be upperclassmen—rising juniors and seniors, anywhere from 16-18 years old. There are no constraints on gender (there's not even any roles), but I would ideally like an even ratio of masculine and feminine-identifying characters. This takes place during their summer break from school.
Charleston, South Carolina generally has a hot, humid climate in the summer. It's a city with lots of history and is considered a quaint, clean small city, but as mentioned in the interest check there's a wide wealth gap in this town. Located on the coast, it has a thriving culture based in and around water: sailing, yachting, and surfing are common hobbies for Charleston residents.
This is an application that I alone will be considering: I want to see compelling, unique, thoughtfully crafted characters. Spots are not going to be claimed on a first come, first serve basis. Please only apply for one slot - multiple characters can be discussed once the final cast is chosen.
That being said, if you would still like to exercise some degree of relationship planning as you create your character, please discuss that on the out of character discussion page for this roleplay. Your thoughts may be of great help to another person, and building cohesion early could add to the strength of your application.
As far as diversity is concerned, the world we all share is not at all homogenous. Diversity of ethnic backgrounds, cultures, places of national origin, sexuality, and gender identity would be much appreciated and more reflective of the current state of the world.
If you do choose to create a character with a racial or ethnic background different than your own, please do so in a respectful, affirming way: avoid relying on cliches and stereotypes to craft your persona. This is especially applicable to minority and marginalized identities.
Please contact me with any questions or concerns you have, but also know that I am not here to walk you through the application process: it's simply not fair to ask me to advise or double check any applications in progress.

THOSE DAMN KIDS.
THE YANKEES — 3/3 open.
Rich as sin, these are the kids who were born with it all and know nothing different. Beautiful plantation-style homes, fine furnishings, private tutors, their own speedboats and cars. Often lacking in compassion and perspective, they can be brash, insensitive, and entitled as hell. Not saying that the grass is always greener on the other side, but having that kind of money does seem to solve a lot of problems, doesn't it? They attend an elite private college preparatory high school.
Vibes: the smell of a brand-new car, the unmistakable weight and feel of real gold, delicate perfumes, the relief of air conditioning on a scorching hot day, a clean, well-lighted place to come back to.
THE DIXIES — 2/3 open.
Poor as dirt, these are the kids who have had to fight for everything they've ever had. Moving from home to home, living with unreliable utilities, only wearing hand-me-downs and whatever's at Goodwill, they know what it's like to struggle and many of them are gritty and better for it. This kind of life does lend itself to a kind of bitterness, however. It's easy to be resentful when those with plenty seem to be taking it all for granted. They attend the local public high school.
Vibes: warm beer, sandy toes, the satisfaction when you find exactly the right amount of money to buy a treat, the thrill of running at night, gratitude for the small things, a place that smells like home.
