Yes, humans "evolved" into pledges in a way. Also yes, partially due to having the sheer amount of knowledge and power the upper classes have amassed. Very few pledges outside of mammals and avians ever become knights, let alone royalty. The ones that do are usually outliers for their class.

Within Adrea yes, other countries are a different story. Pledges usually stay within one to two classes of their biological parents, and always seek equilibrium. Say your mom was avian but your dad was a fish, you'd most likely end up a reptile. In MC's case his dad was a mammal and his mother avian, he had a pretty good chance of being either one of their classes but not entirely 50/50.
