once upon a time

Born on a oddly warm night in October, Jane Hawke gave birth to a 10lb 8oz healthy, baby girl named Mallory. She would grow up having everything in life handed to her, from good grades, to expensive items. Her family is known for their real estate business in Sacramento and they would live there up until she turned 10. Once they left, they discovered the town of Joplin, WA, the mother and father decided this may be a good place to start a new business and help better the town. It would almost feel like torture to the young girl, up until she found out how to run the school and every other aspect of her academic career.

a new era of love

From prom queen, to head cheerleader, there is nothing that this girl can't or won't do. She has a wide variety of boyfriends between the ages of 14 and 17, all of them ending from her side, but never taking any blame as to way the relationship would've gone south. Many times the girl would be arrested, but never spend time in jail due to her family's monetary status and her "good looks" from Mallory's perspective.

Unlike her older brother, Joshua, who came into this world silently, Mary entered with a bang.

She had a set of lungs an opera singer would envy. She screamed when she came into the world, and continued to scream day and night. Her stomach felt like it was on fire whenever she drank her mother’s milk, and nothing seemed to settle her. Strangers would often look at her twin, Martha, with such peace when they gazed upon her. As soon as they laid eyes on Mary though, who would have her mouth agape and screaming for some sort of salvation from the pain, they would turn away. It took a while for their parents to finally understand what was the cause of it all, but when they did, Mary didn’t stop her presence from being known.

She wanted to be the centre of attention for everything. She wanted to be a singer, a dancer, an actress; she wanted people to look at her and feel an overwhelming joy and pleasure in her art. But her parents didn't like that. They said it took eyes away from gazing upon Jehovah. That it wasn't something to be proud of. So, whenever she sang out loud or acted in the supermarkets, her parents quickly punished her. There was a yearning inside of her to sing, dance and act, but it was forbidden before Jehovah. Her parents told her that the only place she could sing was within the Kingdom Hall, and even then, it was for Jehovah and no one else. That the songs she sang had power behind the words, and to pick her words carefully.

Coming into puberty, Mary soon discovered that she was advancing a lot further than her sister. In fact, she had her first period at the age of ten, while Martha was fifteen when she first had hers. I suppose, it was around this time in her life that she became, as her parents called it, "boy crazy". It wasn't that she was "boy crazy". She just knew that she thought boys were cute and wanted those boys to know that she thought they were cute. Nothing crazy about it at all, right? When you're a child, parents always come up and comment on how cute you are. So, why couldn't she?

At the age of twelve, Mary started to struggle with her periods. Her cycles were irregular, and she would have incredible, unbearable cramping from it all. She would often ask her mother to bring her to the doctor, but Grace Jones would simply shrug it off and say 'My cramps don't hurt that much. Take some painkillers and have a nap; you'll be fine'. Mary was often bedridden for days, only dragged to attend school, where she was more commonly dragged into the nurses bay to nap. Her parents refused to bring her to the doctors, and on the days when she had her periods, she wasn't allowed to attend Kingdom Hall. She was unclean during those times, as her father would explain to her.

If anyone is to be found spontaneously breaking into song and dance, it would be Mary. She always gets caught up in the excitement of the moment and wants everyone else to feel the same way too. Generous with her time and energy, Mary takes her time to encourage those around her. She loves the spotlight, and all the world is her stage. Utterly social, Mary enjoys the simplest things, and there is no other greater joy for her than just having fun with a good group of people.

Though it may not always seem like it, Mary knows that it’s not all about her - she’s observant and very sensitive to others’ emotions. She often is the first to help someone talk out a challenging problem, happily providing emotional support and practical advice. However, if the problem is about her, she is more likely to avoid a conflict altogether than to address it head-on. Mary loves a little drama and passion, but not so much when she’s the focus of criticism.

Mary is there whenever there is a need for laughter, playfulness, and to volunteer to try something new and fun - there is no greater joy to her than to bring everyone else along for the ride. She can chat for hours, sometimes about anything but the topic she’s meant to be talking about, and share loved ones’ emotions through good times and bad.

Easily bored: Without constant excitement, Mary will always try to find ways to create it for herself. Risky behaviour, self-indulgence, and the pleasures of the moment over long-term plans are all things she gets into a little too often.

Poor long-term planner: In fact, she rarely makes detailed plans for the future. To her, things come as they come, and she rarely takes the time to lay out steps and consequences, with the belief that they could change at any given moment - even with things that can be planned.

Unfocused: Anything that requires long-term dedication and focus is a particular challenge for Mary. In academics, dense, unchanging subjects like Classic Literature are much more difficult than more dynamic, relatable subjects like psychology. Dustin is a loveable doofus, a goofy, sarcastic, and outgoing bro willing to befriend or strike up a conversation with just about anyone. Regarded as kind of a loser at school, he's also rather nerdy, especially for topics that interest him like technology or science, and ann all around good student who enjoys school and learning new things. While certainly not the cocky or egotistical type, Dustin has a relaxed air of confidence about him; aware of his inherent dweebiness, he accepts it as part of his identity and just kinda rolls with it, not trying too hard to impress or fit in. Though he's a sensitive and empathetic boy, he tends to respond poorly on the rare occasion he's irritated or annoyed, his first instinct to antagonize the offending party. Baby Dustin was the darling only son of the cutest couple in Joplin, Aaron and Deirdre Thackery. The happiest of couples; at least they were back then. Deirdre adored her handsome, brilliant, and loving husband, the guy who made her dreams of owning a home--a cozy little house in Foxglove Heights--come true. He was truly the perfect man.

later life

Deirdre put in long hours at the diner her family owned, the hidden gem of the industrial district, so of course little Dustin spent a lot of time there. Aaron was in IT, working at a small firm downtown. He always enjoyed building computers and tinkering with electronics though, taking them apart to figure out how they worked, how to fix them. Even taking on a side hustle fixing hardware for the locals around Joplin. He was thrilled when little Dustin also began showing an interest in the work he did, and loved bonding with his son through teaching the bright and curious boy how to do all these things at a young age.

All was well for some years, until Deirdre's perfect man started to get bored with his suburban life and demanding family responsibilities. He'd gradually withdrew more and more from the family, staying out for late night poker games, drinking, gambling to get some excitement in his life. While she definitely noticed the shift, Deirdre was a busy woman--not just a mother but now a business owner as well, having taken over the diner suddenly after her father was diagnosed with dementia. But despite all their issues, the Thackerys managed to live a fairly happy and peaceful life for a good decade, even welcoming a baby girl into the family.

Dustin was just about 10 years old when tragedy struck the Thackerys. Aaron was killed in an alleged carjacking gone wrong. Even as a child though, nothing about his father's death seemed to add up for Dustin. Why would anyone want his dad's crappy old Kia? And why wouldn't his dad just hand it over? It didn't make sense, but the police ruled it as such, and tge case was closed. And the family had bigger problems to worry about. They of course were struggling after Aaron's death, so much so that Deirdre had to sell their comfortable Foxglove home for a cheap apartment in the rickety old Chalamet building.

even later life

Dustin now works as a busboy at the diner, and when he's not doing that, can usually be found skating around the city or getting into mischief with the other Chalamet kids. He's since learned some unsavory things about his late father and the shady mafia dealings he was involved in, namely cyber crimes like malware and phishing scams. He never told his mother, but Dustin has been secretly learning to hack in order to feel closer to his dad, even though the thought of stealing money or information from innocent people isn't something that appeals to him at all.

Aaron Thackery

His late father. Dustin and his mother don't talk about him much, obviously a painful topic for both of them, and Chrissy has very little memory of him. But Dustin misses him deeply despite how distant his dad could be, and holds onto a lot of unresolved anger and grief surrounding his death.

Christine Thackery

When Dustin was 7, the Thackerys welcomed a new addition their family--a baby girl named Christine. Dustin was so happy to be an older brother, he practically appointed himself another parent to the infant, determined to learn all there was to learn in order to help take care of her. Young Dustin loved his baby sister more than anything, and despite their constant bickering, he still does to this day.

Ashley Park

His funny, snarky friend who just so happens to be extremely gorgeous, and a one-of-a-kind, geniune weirdo; Dustin's dreamgirl really, and it's no wonder he has a massive crush on her. The two have been exchanging insults since Ashley moved into the Chalamet building, and despite their flirtatious banter, Dustin is convinced Ashley sees him as nothing more than a goofy buddy she likes as a friend.

Oliver Dreyfuss

Considering Dustin's affinity for oddballs, it's no suprise he would befriend his weird, quiet classmate. Dustin loves that Oliver is a font of knowledge on turtles, insects, and all sorts of things, and always enjoys listening to his fun facts and trivia. Oli is a friend he truly holds dear, though Dustin manages to inadvertently confuse the kid quite often with his dumb jokes and sarcasm.

Charlie Vodianova

Even though she lives down the block, Charlie is an honorary Chalamet building kid--lucky her. Far from popular at school, Dustin is always grateful for new friends, especially any cute girl he vibes with. It's interesting when someone whose life amounted to nothing expects the world of their child. They say actions speak louder than words for a reason, though it's painfully evident that Evelyn Underwood never took those words to heart.

Aurora was born and raised in Joplin's glorious Industrial District, like her mother before her, and her mother before her. The familial similarities continue in the lack of a masculine presence, with her grandfather's death when her mother was three and her own father disappearing before she took her first breath. Like many from her neighborhood, it seemed as though she was destined to follow the path laid out before her; the same one her mother and grandmother had walked; a path lined with misery, abandonment, and constant lies.

Many nights in the Underwood household were spent counting change, unless her mother brought someone home. Those nights were spent putting on sickeningly sweet smiles and locking bedroom doors. At first she found it strange; why would these men in their three piece suits be willing to come to their neighborhood? Eventually she began thinking maybe that was just the power of love until the men started coming so frequently they started bleeding into one another in her memories.

She later realized those men had families, and the power of love was nothing in the face of temptation.

The mornings after her mother invited someone into their home were decent, better yet if the man had gone home in the night. Full of laughter, the sizzling of bacon, and boisterous chatter. Those were the good days.

Their house was never quiet, though the bad days came with different sounds: arguments between Evelyn and her mother, between Evelyn and her daughter, someone's sobbing in a locked room. The arguments were always the same, functioning as constant reminders of Evelyn's sacrifices that Aurora never asked for, that she had to bear the weight of regardless.

Up until she was sixteen, her mother's disappointment was Aurora's motivation for not following the footsteps in front of her.

now

Shortly after she turned sixteen, it was almost like a switch flipped inside her. She knew her mother would go to the ends of the earth to pay for her education, but she knew this meant she'd be indebted to her mother forever. The question of whose life she was really living began gnawing away at her and she couldn't shake the feeling that it wasn't her own.

Her mother still served as motivation, but what Aurora was running toward changed drastically. She didn't need a degree - didn't really want one to begin with - and certainly didn't need to put that much work in in order to make a life for herself. In fact, she'd learned from the best: temptation was power, and power meant money.

So, in the middle of her junior year Aurora left home and never looked back. She didn't go too far, partially because she knew her mother wouldn't look too hard and partially because the unknown was terrifying. Having Evenlyn close made the ordeal feel easier, though she's never admit that.

The year and a half before her eighteenth birthday was rough, but her confidence in her plan comforted her most days and kept her warm on others.

Her eighteenth birthday was spent auditioning for a spot at PEACHES, and celebrating when it was given to her. She learned quickly - pleasing men for short periods of time was her family's forte after all - and enjoyed the adrenaline the attention gave her. She didn't, however, enjoy the loss of autonomy and power she felt came with private dances, but her solution to that, albeit unethical, came quickly, too.

The name given to them at birth meant miracle.

Born after several years of heartbreaking attempts, Syd's parents had been dreaming of them for some time. The love that they received growing up, though appreciated, never felt quite right. It felt as though it was meant for someone else, as though Syd were meant to be someone else.

For years, they tried to be the person they thought deserved that love. They swallowed their desires and hid their identity in favor of one they knew their parents were capable of loving.

Slowly, the facade began fading away, proving too difficult for Syd to maintain. They can still remember the look on their mother's face the first time they brought a girl home and held hands with her, can still remember promising their mother that no one else would know, can still remember their mother promising it was for their own good.

The night their mother overheard one of their friends refer to them as "Syd" had been a cold one, but nothing compared to the treatment they received form there on. The space left empty by the love's disappearance was quickly taken over by expectations of nothing but excellence. Seeing that their child didn't want the name they'd given them, Syd's parents became hellbent on ensuring their child lived the future they'd envisioned them in.

So, the house became a prison.

now

Freedom finally came after Syd's high school graduation. Having been accepted into a handful of solid colleges certainly helped, and they had yet to tell their parents that actually attending wasn't part of the plan.

They meant to tell their parents, honest, but the time kept passing and... Suddenly it was move-in day, and it just seemed so much easier to not have that conversation.

Instead of driving to their dorm at the University of Washington, they couch surfed along the Industrial District of Joplin, far enough from the Foxglove Heights home in which they grew up. They spent that first year working towards a tattoo license as an apprentice and maintaining the college student ruse to their parents. Syd's confession to their parents came as soon as they got their license in the form of a note and a permanent goodbye.

For a handful of years they worked as an artist at the Mad Tatter, occasionally participating in the business's more under-the-table affairs. They still go back sometimes, either to tattoo someone or assist as needed, though they've been employed at the Playpen for a little over three months.

Pete is a true nihilist. Not in the funny internet way, but in the genuinely very sad way. He's a sorry sonuvabitch who, even at the cosmically microscopic age of 26, believes he has no future. Pete has lived in Joplin as long as he's been breathing. His parents were both too young to have a kid, and their relationship didn't last long, so he was raised by his mother alone. And she did well by him, though it wasn't easy.

It was pretty immediately obvious that Pete was a little weird. He was very quiet, and nervous. His mother never really found out why, but she became fiercely protective of him. Probably the right choice, since he got bullied a lot. He definitely showed his peers up in intellect and creativity, but was ultimately beaten into silence. It ramped up through middle school and into high school, where he was caught stashing male nudie mags and Playgirls in his gym locker.

He kept a lot of this from his mother, mostly to keep her from getting stressed out. He even kept his mouth shut when his math teacher offered him an alternative method to get higher grades -- the alternative method that every creepy math teacher offers. He kept silent for over a year until they got caught -- thankfully, by then he was a senior, so he only had one year left of being relentlessly harangued by his classmates for screwing a teacher.

No college. It's expensive, so he just attended bartending school. He worked a lot of part-time jobs before moving out on a pretty decent bartending paycheck. His real interest was starting a metal band. In his youth, he'd self-taught bass guitar, and he was a pretty decent screamer.

He joined a band called Sludge when he was 23, as their bassist and vocalist. They played for two years and recorded one independent album. Unfortunately, the group was dysfunctional, as all great bands are. Soon after their last concert, their guitarist got hit by a truck, and since he was the leader, it effectively killed the band. Sludge broke up, and Pete returned to bartending. And now that's all he does.

Axel was born in Iceland, but he didn't actually live there for long. His parents longed for adventure, and managed to collect enough money for a plane to Washington -- coach class. They lived out in the countryside before that became less than ideal, and then moved again to Joplin. By that point, Axel was around 4 years old. His parents were a couple of hippies who originally planned to homeschool him, but they decided the public school experience would be good for him.

He wasn't popular, but he wasn't disliked either. He was a pretty average kid, at least up until high school when he suddenly got really tall and kind of jacked. He played football for all of high school and had a few girlfriends (and maybe a boyfriend or two) along the way, but never really became his school's golden boy due to a generally antisocial nature. Former girlfriends would describe him as "sweet, but also really weird" and he mostly kept to himself. He attended community college for a year, planning to major in veterinary science, before his parents ran out of money and he had to be pulled.

Of course, he quickly found a secondary passion in the art of tattooing, and ended up training under an older tattoo artist. He also met his last girlfriend there, a woman named Misty. Misty was a punk rock girl, and they stayed together for several years, even moving in together. Of course, this was until Axel found Misty with another man in their bed. Worse still, she was pregnant, and they had no clue who the kid belonged to. Misty left the kid with Axel as soon as she was born -- a baby girl who he named Ella.

Ella was quickly revealed to have Downes syndrome, something that ran in Misty's family, and it was extremely difficult to find accommodations for her. But she's Axel's wonderful little girl, and while he had no interest in raising a kid initially, he quickly caught the parenting bug. Now he raises her by himself in Joplin.

May was born in South Korea, but was put up for adoption pretty quickly, as her parents weren't prepared for the detriment she was born with -- her vocal chords hadn't formed properly, and she was effectively rendered mute. She was adopted by a family in the United States after a few years of waiting, and she moved to California. There, she was raised with the utmost love and affection. She only had one close friend, but never let that get her down.

For years she learned sign language, and spent most of her school life enjoying classic rock and taking care of her big dog. But all good things must come to an end, and in this case, the end came in the form of a house fire. It consumed everything she knew and loved, her whole past laid to waste.

They weren't rich, but they could've moved somewhere nice if it weren't for the fact that her father got sued for insurance fraud. The insurance company believed he had set the fire on purpose, and while they came out the other end unscathed, the fees for lawyers and the like hit them hard. The cheapest place they could find to move was Joplin, which wasn't a particularly safe neighborhood, but with May being sixteen years old, they figured she could handle herself.

So now she's new. VERY new. And in this new life, she'll have a lot of new experiences. Some good, most bad.

Born Chastity Candela Moore, Bug was the middlemost of five siblings born several miles outside of Joplin and into the countryside. Their parents were staunch Christians, and took to living outside of city limits to avoid the modern way. Bug grew up around goats and draconian familial laws. They had a set distance from the house they could go, and for a very long time, that was all they knew.

Their family was strict, and they were always around. Church services were held at home, with a few other weirdos Bug never really became familiar with. Their parents believed strongly in corporal punishment, and wouldn't spare the rod for any reason. Forget to pray before bed? Ouch. Forget your chores? Ouch. Skip out on church? Ow, ow, ow. They'd also hold their most hardworking and devout child in high regard, leading to the Moore siblings constantly fighting to one-up each other. This was all normal until their eldest sibling, Prudence, disappeared.

At first, Bug believed their sister had been spirited away by the devil, but it quickly became apparent that she'd ran away. She was twenty-one, so it was only natural to have a bit of wanderlust, but upon returning, she revealed that she'd been leaving late at night to tryst with a boy from Joplin. Angered by this, their parents gave her an ultimatum: accept the beating of a lifetime, or leave and never come back. She chose the latter.

Only about a month later, CPS suddenly appeared at their door. With children bearing obvious signs of abuse, they were switfly taken away and split apart. Bug's younger siblings were quickly adopted, and their elder brother was eighteen, old enough to run his own life. This left them alone in a Joplin foster home at only twelve.

Things weren't all bad -- they went through a lot of changes in those next three years. Changed their gender, changed their name, changed their hair color, changed their personality, changed everything about themself, though whether it was for the better is a mystery. The formerly quiet and compliant Chastity Moore had become a screaming, wild Bug.

Half-Russian, half-Somali, born in America. Mia Potemkin grew up poor, with both of her parents working to make ends meet. She didn't actually grow up in Joplin, but ended up moving there very early to save money on rent -- the Chalamet is as cheap as it is full of roaches.

She tried not to be upset about the hand dealt to her, but it was hard when she couldn't even get much more than a bag of chips in her lunchbox on some days. But her parents loved her, and she couldn't ask for more than that. Still, she led a relatively normal life, at least by the standards of Joplin. This was until a sudden series of events that began when she was only thirteen, and she met her first boyfriend, Rufus.

Rufus was a punk from Foxglove -- rich, but super cool. He was seventeen when they met -- turned eighteen soon after. She was smitten -- both by his money and by his edgy persona. He told her to keep their relationship a secret from her parents, and while she didn't want to, she did what he told her anyway.

They lasted for awhile. Too long. She even crashed at his place a few times ("no, ma, I'm at a sleepover with my friend") and, inevitably, they were sexually involved. Then she never heard from him again. A year later, he would leave Joplin. Some said he got in trouble for possession of CP, and left the state with a thick wad of daddy's money. It didn't matter, because as soon as Mia came clean, one thing became abundantly clear -- she had been used. It made her never want to trust anyone again.

Biography

If you know someone from Joplin who has died, chances are they most likely went through the New Beginnings Funeral home. Located on the outskirts of Foxglove, but close enough to the industrial district, New Beginnings was founded by John Wainright in 1950, and ownership has passed down through the generations. When Lilly's parents chose to retire early, she inherited the business. Just as she had always known she would.

Growing up in a funeral home wasn't as creepy or upsetting as other kids in her class thought it would be. Lilly actually loved her home. Her two dad's raised her in the two bedroom apartment located on the second floor of New Beginnings. Death has never upset Lilly, since she has been surrounded by it for as long as she can remember. In fact, death fascinates her. Lilly embraces the goth and punk culture, although her parent's wish she hadn't exactly embraced the stereotype many would place upon a girl living in a funeral home. But as long as Lilly was happy, who were they to take that away from her?

Lilly graduated from the Marsha Clark High School and went to trade school to learn the art of being a mortician. Upon graduating, her parents decided to retire early and move to a smaller, quieter town.

With New Beginning's being on the border between the "good" part of town and the "bad" part of town, Lilly has experienced both the wonderful and the horrible Joplin has to offer. She watches as people from all backgrounds run themselves to death (with no help from those in charge), until they end up at her doorstep. Lilly sympathizes with her fellow Joplin citizens, and does her best to keep her services affordable so that anybody, regardless of financial status and background, can have the proper goodbye they deserve. It's the very least she can do to help.

When business is slow, you can find Lilly spending time at Peaches or people watching at the waterfront pier.

Underneath the body glitter and saccharine smiles is the story of Park Min-jun. Nowadays, he’s under the alias of Quinn Aster Lee.

Min-jun was born in California and raised in Los Angeles. He’s the youngest child of Dae Park, CEO of Park Industries — a multinational industrial company and one of the largest tech conglomerates in Los Angeles — and Yon Chai, an influential socialite. After the day he was born, Min-jun was shoved in the arms of his nanny and abandoned.

The first four years of his life were relatively peaceful. Min-jun lived separately from his parents with Ms. Lee, his nanny, and Yu-jun, his older brother. While he never met his parents, he thrived under his nanny and brother’s guidance. Ms. Lee taught him how to be kind and protected him fiercely as if he was her own child. Yu-jun supported his interests and taught him everything he knew about the stars.

A few months after his birthday, Min-jun discovered his nanny’s body hanging from a noose in her bedroom. During her funeral, Min-jun met his parents for the first time. Instead of comforting him, his mother blamed him for Ms. Lee’s suicide.

Euntae was born in Washington and raised in Joplin. He lived in Foxglove Heights with his hardworking parents. As an only child, Euntae shouldered a lot of responsibilities. His parents expected him to be perfect and excel in his academics. While Euntae met their high expectations, he developed a resentment toward perfection.

Once he entered high school, Euntae started to rebel. He cut his own hair and dyed it black. He snuck out late at night and attended raves. Instead of wearing the clothes his parents picked out for him, he went to the local thrift store and bought his first leather jacket. After the police caught him drinking and escorted him home, his parents decided enough was enough.

The same night, they barged into his room and started to collect his new belongings. They wanted to get rid of everything since it was poisoning their child. Euntae tried to stop them and it sparked a heated argument. During the struggle, his mother discovered his first binder and men’s deodorant. Euntae tried to deny it. However, since his parents didn’t believe him, Euntae was forced to tell the truth. Once he came out, things changed for the worse. Instead of supporting their child, his parents rejected his identity.

As Euntae grew older, his home life became increasingly toxic. His father was emotionally distant and ignored his existence. His mother criticized his appearance and became verbally abusive. While it never escalated into physical violence, Euntae avoided his home. During his seventeenth birthday, Euntae had a huge argument with his mother since he ignored curfew and came home late. In the heat of the moment, his mother accidentally spilled a pot of scalding water on his right forearm. Instead of apologizing for her mistake, she blamed him for everything. When Euntae protested, she slapped him.

The single slap was the last straw. Euntae wrapped his arm with a towel and ran. A few hours later, he wandered through the Industrial district.

He wanted to leave Joplin. Unfortunately, since he ran out the door with nothing but the clothes on his back, Euntae was broke. In a moment of desperation, Euntae resorted to stealing. He targeted the first rich bastard he saw. It didn’t end well.

However, instead of punishing him for the attempted pickpocketing, the stranger took him to see a private doctor and treated his burns. At the end of the day, they became friends.

Teagan was born in Norway and raised in Måløy. They’re the only child of Tobias Fiske, a successful fisherman, and Mira Fiske, a freelance horticulturist. Before their father’s family business went bankrupt and he lost everything, life in Måløy was relatively peaceful.

Since they were young, they’ve always been close to their mother. She introduced them to music and gardening. She taught them how to sing and dance. She inspired them to play the piano and explore new instruments. She was their best friend.

Their relationship with their father was different. While he taught them a few things like swimming, fishing, and cooking, their father was strict. If things weren’t done a certain way, Teagan was forced to do it again until they got it right. Unlike their mother, their father didn’t support their interests. He believed things like singing, dancing, and pursuing music was a waste of time. He wanted his child to follow in his footsteps and take over the family business.

Teagan wanted to pursue music.

A few weeks after his twelfth birthday, everything changed. Due to the betrayal of a close family friend and a few bad investments, Teagan’s father was forced to file for bankruptcy. After he lost his family’s business, he resorted to drinking.

He became belligerent and violent. He took his frustrations out on his family, especially his wife. While their mother tried to protect them from their father, it wasn't enough. Since they tried to defend their mother, Teagan was beaten.

As they grew older, it became worse.

A few months later, their mother received a job opportunity in München, Germany. Since they relied solely on their mother’s income, they moved to München. They lived in München for three years.

During their fifteenth birthday, Teagan shared their first kiss with their crush. Unfortunately, their father walked in on them and discovered that their crush was a boy. In a drunken rage, he attacked Teagan and started to choke them.

Before he could kill his child, Teagan's mother attacked from behind and knocked him unconscious.

While Teagan recovered, their father permanently damaged their vocal cords. Due to the damage, they lost the ability to sing.

Fearing for her child's safety, Teagan's mother quit her job and request they move. Once their father awakened in jail, he was presented with a signed divorce document.

Riley Gordan was a gift to his parents. A Christmas Eve baby to the military couple, he was raised by his grandparents in their quaint little house near coastal California. Lyle was the first and only son of a wealthy couple of actors, Andrea and Luis Lapointe. Of course, with them being actors, their son was destined for the screen as well. He was quickly picked up to play a young boy named Rusty in a sitcom titled The Family Way, one of those god-awful family values shows about parents and children having relatively innocent conflicts. It was pure TV fluff, but old people loved it.

In particular, Lyle's character became sort of an icon of adorable TV kids, and as the show ran, viewers watched him grow through to his late elementary school age. He also got a few voice acting deals in cartoons and kids films. But some kids are early bloomers, and Lyle was one of them. At the age of twelve, he experienced the very familiar signs of oncoming puberty, and having been raised in a sanitized nightmare world of trash television, he was immediately overwhelmed by terror. He screamed at his own werewolf-like visage in the mirror, and the truth became clear. Little Rusty was growing up.

He was quickly put on puberty blockers to prevent him from further aging, but the fear, the possibility, it loomed over him. Years passed, and he retained his youth, but some things can't be hidden with medications -- teenage anger, for instance.

The fact of the matter was that, by age thirteen, Lyle didn't want to be Little Rusty anymore. He became known for acting up on set, sometimes showing up late or not showing up at all. He was the kind of person who was smoking cigarettes before he turned sixteen, drinking himself stupid before he could even drive. He didn't go to school -- he was homeschooled, so all of his friends were other young actors experiencing the misery of constant surveillance.

Then it happened. The network wanted him gone. His show was being cancelled -- nobody wanted that garbage anymore.

Nobody wanted him on voice roles, either. Nobody needed him anymore. Children were being born every day, and now being sixteen, it was obvious there was something off about Little Rusty. It didn't matter how much make-up he wore or how many medical procedures his parents put him under. He was grown.

The next few years of Lyle's life were a blur, as he'd begun using a wonderful thing called cocaine. He couldn't find much acting work, since it had now become apparent that he wasn't all that good at acting, and he'd developed a reputation for being... "hard to work with". Most of his actor friends were too busy to talk to him, and all his parents cared about was desperately trying to shove him back into the limelight. He was losing his mind.

It came to a head when, the day after his nineteenth birthday, he went for a joy ride in his dear old dad's Ford Thunderbird -- a beautiful vintage-style car, painted red. He was absolutely destroyed on coke and booze, and also never actually learned to drive. He was found all the way in Nevada two days later, sobbing in the front seat of the now-crashed car, which was splattered with the remains of 27-year-old Bailey Foss. A kindergarten teacher. In that moment, Lyle looked younger than he had in years, face bright red and wrinkled up in the throes of abject sorrow. He'd fucking killed someone.

He was taken into police custody, and spent half a year suffering through a real-life court drama until finally Mrs. Foss's family agreed to settle out of court. His parents paid him off, but that was the last favor they'd do for him. He had to be out of the house by the end of the month. Anything he didn't take with him would be sold.

With a few suitcases of clothes and other possessions, he took a bus from Los Angeles to Seattle, and then took another, smaller bus to Joplin when he realized he couldn't afford Seattle with what little money he'd brought. Plus, almost nobody would hire him, what with his face being smeared across every magazine in the country. Lapointe Case Dismissed - What does this mean? Honestly, the Stardust Diner was probably the only place in the world that would hire him. Joplin loves its stragglers.

Now he lives alone in the Chalamet, making ends meet with his extremely limited skillset.

Three words to describe Trevor Tate? All American Boy. Apple pie, Friday night football, and avid 4th of July fan. The basic white boy of today's society, and a menace to women everywhere.

Trevor grew up in a small town in Ohio. Daddy was the mayor, which gained him more respect than he deserved. Trevor grew up privileged, never knowing what real strife meant. To Trevor the world works on Darwinism, the strong will overpower the weak. Survival of the fittest, and Trevor is the fittest (in his mind). Since first grade he has been bullying those he deems below him. He was written up numerous times for punching, kicking, biting, and cussing out other children in his class. His parents never really disciplined him, after all, how could their sweet angel ever do something wrong? Why, it was the other kids who provoked and attacked their son!

The bullying didn't stop when Trevor hit high school. He became captain of the football team, but to Trevor he was king. His kingdom? The school. Trevor lorded over his fellow classmates, bullying the nerds and the degenerates, while schmoozing the teachers and the entire cheerleading team. High school were Trevor's glory days, and he looks back on them fondly.

And upon graduation where do high school bullies get jobs at? The police station. The following autumn Trevor enrolled at the police academy, where he unfortunately passed with flying color's and was given possession of a firearm. Trevor loved the job, and the feeling of power it gave him over the local populace. But an incident involving a young girl just about to turn 18 while Trevor was 21 caused a scandal in the town. Trevor was forced to resign from the police force at home, and sought employment elsewhere. He ended up in Joplin. Far, far, away from home but in a syndicate that seemed to run more loosely than he was used to. Here, Trevor can thrive.

Wolfgang Thackery was born to Julia and Neil Thackery, a nice, middle class couple from Foxglove Heights. With the birth of a daughter Hannah a few years later, they were truly the perfect All America, white picket fence family.

So of course, Wolf had a happy childhood, right through to his carefree adolescence. While both of his parents were police officers, he never really thought about following in their footsteps; more interested in playing football than worrying about what he'd do with his life after high school. That all changed at the age of 17, when his father was shot to death during a routine traffic stop. Wolf was devastated, and couldn't quite find the same enthusiasm for sports and things he used to love doing, and struggled to keep his grades up. A couple of years later, tragefy struck the Thackery family again when his uncle Aaron was also killed on the streets of Joplin--shot to death in his own car.

After that, Julia retired from the Joplin police and married a wealthy entrepreneur she met online. She moved with him to Silicon Valley, had another child, and is now one of those yuppy Instagram Moms. Hannah went off to college, while Wolf stayed behind in Joplin; he felt a strong calling to become a police officer himself and do what he could to help clean up the streets of Joplin.

Leah was born to Jed and Lara Gallinger, the product of a fling between two old friends that had led to love and even marriage. Though the small little family lived in a nice house in Foxglove, and seemed perfect, things were far from on the inside. Jed, though a loving father who adored his daugter, struggled with substance abuse, often going out, getting turnt, and even having affairs that he would come to hate himself for in the morning. His frequent nights out caused strain in his marriage, and combined with lack of friends outside of Jed, caused his wife's mental health to deteriorate. Things took a turn for the worse however, when Leah was 3, and her mother was involved in a car accident. Severely injured, and in critical condition, Lara underwent a stint in the hospital. To deal with the pain, she was given prescription medications. Unfortunately, harsh pains, a disaster of a marriage, and raising a toddler, got too much for Lara to deal with, and she gradually became hooked on her prescription drugs.

Truthfully, Leah was too young to understand why her mom acted the way she did. Lara loved her, that was obvious even to a little kid, but she was just different from other kid's moms, and she didn't know why. She was always tired, she got cranky, she even smelled pretty bad most of the time. She didn't make nice dinners like DJ's moms, or go to preschool to talk about her job like Jenelle's. And as much as a 6 year old could, she was jealous of her classmates with their normal parents. But to her, that was just her weird mom. Lara still tried to be a good mom, baking cookies and things like that, Only the cookies were always burnt. Even if they weren't, no amount of sweet gestures would have ever began to make up for Leah discoveing Lara's dead body in the wee hours of the morning after Halloween, went beyond weird.

She could still picture it to this day. The way that even though Leah would later learn that her mother ODed, blood still poured from her skull from bumping it against a counter as she collapsed. The way that she was completely still, her eyes wide open even if it was obvious she was gone. The way that Leah ran to her father's bedroom and banged on the door, not able to make a sound. The way she escaped to the safety of her bedroom before Jed could even open the door.

She's never talked about that night since. She'd rather pretend it never happened, and that she's completely carefree. It happened so long ago after all, why should it affect her? She threw herself into her studies, and later on, into partying, jumping on the quickest thing to distract her from her memories. And it almost worked, she gave herself so much going on in her life, it was almost impossible to stay still and really think about her mom.

Leah now works at the hospital her dad is a surgeon at, and strives to be a doctor like him. Her mother's cause of death was kept relatively hush hush, as Jed didn't want to ruin his dead wife's memory, losing her being the thump on his head he needed to get his shit together. Discovering the body is still a frequent recurring nightmare of hers, the obvious solution being not to sleep and live off of caffeine. Outside of work, she's either partying, doing some nerdy academia shit with her bestie Jenelle, or bugging DJ to date her.

The morning after, her mom had died, and after "recovering" from the loss, she returned to school, offered a half-apology to the young boy and they'd been sorta friends since. Leah's had a crush on him since she was little, and isn't shy about letting him know. Though he always rejects her, the two have actually hooked up once, and Leah's still doggedly pursuing him. She pretends like she's unbothered by the constant rejections, but they're slowly taking a toll on her, even if she's scared to walk away from him, holding onto hope that one day he might change his mind.

It all started...

As with most things, Darwin's life began unremarkable. He wasn't born to rich savants, or artists, or even vampires. After pounding a can of beer, Charles Hooper realized his wife, Anna, was going into labor. They didn't do it in the hospital -- Darwin was born on the carpet of his living room, hands clenched, screaming. He was immediately cold, and scared, and he'd very soon be used to that feeling.

That birthplace was in the slummiest part of London, where Darwin would spend his childhood. His home wasn't even remotely safe for a child, with a violent father and a delusional mother. Sharp objects littered the floors, sockets were uncovered, cabinets unlocked. At a very young age, Darwin drank dishwashing detergent, which permanently damaged his stomach. He soon became accustomed to the routine of avoiding eye contact with his father, scrounging up food from the back of the fridge every night, going to public school in the mornings, and so on. Somehow, deep down, he must've known what his house was like could get his parents in trouble, so he never said a word.

How tragic,

but a fitting tale for a poet.

As he grew, it became clear to anyone with eyes that Darwin wasn't all there in the head. He was diagnosed with autism, and later, bipolar disorder, but never received any medication. He had no friends, but was often fussed over by his teachers due to an awful home life that even they could recognize from a mile away. By age 10 he had begun self-harming, usually through aimless jabbing with whatever he could find around the house.

The point was that Charles Hooper, with no warning, took his son away to Joplin, using whatever money he'd been hiding from his family and using to by alcohol. This was a mere five years ago, when Darwin began to attend school in the United States.

During the next five years, he'd begun to read the works of Sylvia Plath. Suddenly, he was prompted to begin writing a poetry zine, which he'd publish once a year. Basically nobody would buy it, but anyone who did said that he was a lovely writer. Well, maybe lovely is the wrong word. A horrifying writer. A writer that makes you feel sick in the best way.

Noel Sheary wasn't always involved with ne'er-do-wells and the like. Some people are just born in the statistically most disenfranchised province of Ireland and things go downhill from there. Specifically, he grew up in the fishing town of Burtonport, where he lived a pretty crappy life with two crappy parents. His mother was an alcoholic, his father a serial adulterer, and they both couldn't stand him or his younger sister. So he was a self-made man, or a self-raised boy. Developed his own opinions, and generally preferred his mom because she was at least at home and not off "shagging that Brit cunt Natasha". Unfortunately, she wasn't the one that got custody, probably because she'd always drunk enough to kill a small elephant.

His father and good old Natasha dragged him and his sister to Seattle when he was in middle school, because apparently it had always been Natasha's dream to live in the States. She then promptly dumped dear old dad for a younger, wealthier man, meaning Noel was up shit creek without a paddle. They moved to Joplin soon after -- they didn't really have Seattle money. His father stopped working altogether when Noel was around fourteen, which meant he had to find his own money.

A lot of gangs lived in his area, and they had a lot of cash. They were also VERY apprehensive about letting a fresh-faced kiddo join their ranks, but gave him a few jobs delivering packages and running drugs. In return, he was given a pretty decent pay and guaranteed safety for him and his little sister. Over the next few years, he even became sort of an official member. Good thing too, since home life got infinitely worse. His father turned to violence, not really sober enough to realize that Noel was the one paying the bills, so Noel took the brunt of the harm. At some level, it was to protect his sis, but it was also a matter of pride -- he wasn't too pussy to get roughed up a little, right?

Age sixteen. Noel gets his first gun. Noel shoots a man tied to a chair. He gets paid. His boss asks him how life is at home, and he lies, because he knows his father will be killed, and if he gets found living alone with his sis, they'll be separated and sent off somewhere. Sis is budding into a gorgeous young drug addict, and there's not much Noel can do about it. Soon he'll turn seventeen. Then after that he'll be eighteen, and he can get the fuck out of here.

Though, can he, really?

Of course not. The years went plodding on at a molasses-like speed as Noel continued doing the only thing he knew how to do. And then, as soon as he was old enough, he blew the whistle on his father. Little sister Wendy Sheary knew that Noel wasn't a capable guardian, and he couldn't fund the lifestyle she wanted, but she knew someone who could. They were Irish twins (in more ways than one) so it wasn't even a year before she ran off with her boyfriend.

With a dead father and a runaway sister, Noel Sheary was destitute. He had nothing but himself. So he's been doing the same thing since 18 years old, running drugs and stabbing and killing and wholly giving up on the possibility of things one day being different.

If you ask about Leon around his old stomping grounds, those are probably some of the terms used to describe him. People's perception of him has never bothered him; nothing really ever has. He doesn't see the need in getting worked up over shit that's out of his control anyways. He was pretty young when he came to the realization that damn near everything is out of his control, so he doesn't concern himself too much with anything.

Despite the general perception of him, he's an incredibly intelligent dude. People that knew him when he was younger love to come up with excuses for why he ended up the way he did: he fell in with the wrong crowd; if only his dad had been around; maybe if his mom had just been more strict. The truth of the matter is that some people are just content with mediocrity. Leon's interest in winning the rat race is close to zero. In all honesty, the very idea of holding down office jobs and working his way up the corporate ladder or whatever sends shivers down his spine.

He's always chalked that up to the thought of sitting still for an eight hour work shift. Sitting still has never been his thing. He paces when he's on the phone, bounces his leg when he's in a chair, talks with his hands. He's also never been one for quiet and there's almost always music playing in his apartment regardless of what he's doing.

Leon spends most of his time trying to drown out his own thoughts while simultaneously trying to escape the world. This has resulted in a fondness for drugs of almost all types, predominantly pills and bud. He also indulges himself in physical pleasures, though has always kept his lovers at arms length.

There weren't many people he was genuinely close to in Seattle and he did a pretty good job of convincing himself that he preferred it that way. Sure, people knew who he was for the most part - his affinity for attention requires at least that much - but there was no one blowing up his phone to kick it. Unless, of course, they were trying to get a fix or an in to a party or just want a good time with no strings attached. Despite his love for attention, he doesn't truly care too much what people think about him, doesn't try too hard to impress them.

He's an expert at being comfortable in all scenarios and adapts to his environment with remarkable ease. Regardless of this, his loudness and carefree attitude always remain. He could be a good friend and even a good person if he really set his sights on it, but he'd rather indulge his every whim and consequences be damned.

Maybe Leon's childhood would've been less lonely if it had really just been him and his mom. Instead it had been him, his mom, and heroin. There wasn't really enough room in his mom to care for both, so he grew accustomed to being put on the back burner.

He never cared enough to ask about his father, was never really curious about him to begin with. Why bother wasting that much energy on someone that didn't wanna be around? As far as Leon was concerned, the fucker should stay gone.

Enough about him. Leon and his mother, Liz, lived in a studio apartment in Brooklyn, New York. It would've been a little cramped if Liz was ever home for more than a few hours at a time. The freedom suited young Leon just fine, and he always managed to find ways to entertain himself: setting up playdates for himself, walking around the block, listening to music for hours. Making friends came easily to him probably due to his willingness to make a clown of himself for others' amusement.

Despite the lack of structure and stability in his home life, Leon thrived in school. Kind of. Academically, he was gifted beyond his years, but his behavior was apparently "inappropriate". His mom never gave him a hard time for it, though, and he always assumed she blamed herself for his acting out. Most people probably think that's fair of her, but Leon's convinced he would've ended up exactly the same way no matter what his family looked like.

Anyways, whenever his mom felt really guilty, she'd buy him something. Never anything grand, seeing as nearly all their money went to drugs and rent, but she's responsible for his love of comics, music and making art.

The most expensive gift she ever got him was an acoustic guitar, and it's still Leon's most prized possession.

When Leon was twelve, the Brooklyn lifestyle was ripped away from him. To this day, nearly seven years later, he's never gotten even an inkling of an explanation as to why, and it's the only source of bitterness he feels towards Liz. He wasn't really that mad, though, after warming up to Seattle's dreary days and street life.

The only change he really experienced, aside from the shift in friends, was that his academic performance plummeted. The work just... didn't get done. He started to think it's a silent rebellion, not that Liz would've ever noticed or acted on it if she did, but whatever. As long as he got to walk at graduation it was all good.

And it happened, somehow. They let him walk at graduation and gave him his diploma. He stayed in Seattle for another year and some change to get his tattoo license. Staying in Seattle for longer was an option, with a move back to Brooklyn being the eventual goal. Finding Liz overdosed in the living room, however, threw a wrench in his plans. It wasn't a surprise by any means, and really it was a long time coming, but the mental anticipation is not the same as the experience.

Something in him snapped, and as soon as Liz was out of the hospital he left for the town of Joplin. He hadn't even realized that was where he was going, couldn't really remember how he'd even heard of it, but it made sense to him when he found himself sitting in Stardust Diner and deciding this was where he'd settle until he got bored of it.

He spent several weeks wandering the city and sleeping either in the homes of one night stands or the Chalamet Park whenever he lucked out. It likely wouldn't have been as long as it was had he saved more of the money he'd earned from the job he'd managed to secure at the diner rather than continuing to indulge himself, but some habits never seem to die. At least now he has a place at the Chalamet Building. It's only a slight upgrade from the park, but at least the rain isn't a problem most days.

growing up, charlie didn't remember much of her dad, just that he ran off before charlie could even know she had a dad. she heard her mom talking about him a lot, saying he was good for nothing and that how the two of them didn't need her father, that they could make it on there own. and to june banks' credit, that's exactly what they did. she raised her baby girl on her own, without the help of her ex boyfriend, and she got a job as an emergency room receptionist in some run down hospital on the west coast. so when charlie was ten, the two of them packed up their things, loaded up her mom's six year old van, and drove across the country to her new job.

when they got there, june just threw charlie into the nearest public school so she could be busy while june figured out how to get them settled in their new life. charlie didn't mind. yes, she was an awkward little girl, but her mother insisted that it wasn't a bad thing, and that she needed to learn how to embrace who she was. so that's what charlie did. she signed up for band, choir, and even theater, hoping to make new friends and minimally bother her mother. and the more people she talked to and the more she was immersed in the school life, the more friends she made.

but a few years later, when charlie was thirteen, the teachers of her school reached out to june. turns out, charlie was an incredibly gifted child. she was scoring incredibly high on all of her assignments and tests, including the standardized tests. they suggested that she moves up a few grades all the way from 8th grade to junior year of high school. she graduated high school at age 16 and immediately went to university to study english with a minor in music

life for charlie started to go downhill in her second year of university. right as she was seventeen, her mother told her she was pregnant with her boyfriend's child. charlie didn't even know her mom was dating, but her mom seemed happy, so charlie was happy. she made it a point to visit her mom on the upcoming fall break, so she could meet the boyfriend and make sure her mom knew to take care of herself while going through the pregnancy.

however, when she made it back to her childhood home over break, her mother was in hysterics. she was crying and yelling, throwing things and breaking whatever she could. her boyfriend left her, only with a note saying he didn't want to be a dad and he just left in the middle of the night. she was having a massive panic attack, she didn't have any idea how she was going to support herself and her newborn baby. she was planning to heavily rely on her boyfriend to work and help take care of the baby, but now there was no one.

well, not no one. because the very next day, charlie was on the phone with her university, telling them she needed to withdraw from all her classes. she simply said she had "family issues" come up, and left it at that. within the same hour of withdrawing from her school, she was on the phone with every shop in the city, trying to get a full time job. the only place that was willing to hire a seventeen-year-old was the music shop, two blocks away from her and her mother's apartment. she immediately accepted the job, and charlie's life was slowed to a hault.

once the baby girl was born, charlie and her mom june soon fell into a rhythm. june would stay home during the day, taking care of little baby julia, while charlie would go work at the music store all day, then they would switch; june would go to work at the hospital while charlie stayed home with julia. they got in a good groove, they were getting by, they were making the best of their life. at least, they were for a little over a year.

but right before charlie's eighteenth birthday, june abandoned charlie and julia. in the same way her ex boyfriend did, with only a note. she said she couldn't handle the everyday stresses of being a mother, and she went on and on about how she knew charlie was responsible and she knew whatever charlie did for julia would be a good thing for her. charlie didn't allow herself to freak out. instead, she adapted. she found a day care to put julia in during the day, she talked with her boss about getting a raise and explained the situation to him, and six months later, charlie was making life work for just the two of them.

but people in the city are cruel. any time charlie is out with julia, she gets looks and whispers, people saying she's just a sl*t that slept around and julia is the punishment she deserves for doing so
