Jessica smiled and gave him a thumbs up as she left him alone to settle in.

About ten minutes later, Linde summoned him to the Apothecary.

"Good afternoon, mister Arjun. If you would please shadow me for a while, I'll teach you how the Apothecary functions." She said pleasantly.

Along the wall nearest the Employee Living Area were cabinets lined up along the walls behind a long desk which stretched from one side of the wall to the other. To get by and to the door to the Employee Living Area, there was a special door in the desk that lifted straight up on a hinge. Along the length of the desk were samples of flowers, herbs, mixing and grinding bowls, bandage wraps, etc. Anything and everything one could need for patching themselves up and making their own salves medicines if they knew how.

On the far side wall, there were two large bay windows with beautiful floral pots hanging from the ceiling for decoration. And between the windows was another desk with various splints, canes, crutches, etc. Everything one could need for taking care of greater wounds which caused minor to severe mobility impairments.

Behind the main desk was a young woman with blonde hair wrapped in a bun, glasses, clear and tan skin, and a pleasant smile on her face.

"The Apothecary is fairly simple. And Karly here runs the desk. Karly, this is Maretu Arjun. He's going to work with you starting today. Please be sure to show him the ropes, okay? I need to get back to the clinic."

"Certainly doctor!" She said cheerfully.

Once Linde left the room, Karly turned to Maretu and clapped her hands together with a little bunny hop in place.

"Okay! So! Let me show you around since we don't have any customers in at the moment!" She said, grabbing his hand and practically dragging him with rather surprising strength for such a petite girl, towards the main desk.

"So! Starting here on the left side of the main desk, we have a bunch of flowers. They're arranged by effect of the extract we harvest by grinding their stems and petals down fro-Uh... Sorry. Lemme back up a sec. They're arranged by stem extract here with the red tags on the pots, and petal extract with the yellow tags. From left to right, within those color codings, they're arranged by basic effect. And there's three," she held up three fingers right up towards his face,"-count 'em. Three effect types. First is skin maintenance and repair. Second is blood clotting or thinning. Third is what the Doctor calls 'neural' effects, such as sleep, temporary or permanent paralysis, etc!" She said with a clap of her hands.

"... Uh... That last one sounded kinda weird, didn't it?" She giggled nervously. "So, look! When it comes to paralysis, it's sometimes necessary to permanently paralyze a patient's body part to numb them to pain for extreme circumstances like limb removal surgery. If you permanently paralyze the leg, for example, they won't feel any pain as a result of surgery which takes a major stress off of them. They do have to be more attentive to the wound in the recovery phase. But once the wound has recovered and all the skin and muscle has settled into its new state post-removal of the limb, the patient won't ever feel any pain there as a result of paralysis. If we didn't do that, they'd probably be living with pain for the rest of their lives simply because of damaged nerves, improperly attached muscles, etc. Things that aren't their fault, and that we really can't do much to heal beyond what we've already done by that point. Make sense?!" She asked with an excited hop.

"Good! Moving on!" She said, once again dragging him along with her. "Next along the desk is wild growing herbs from this area around Valkyom." She pulled him in and whispered in his ear. "Don't tell the customers this, but there are a few herbs growing wild that the Doctor doesn't sell and are only for her personal use with making some of her more unique medicines and such for clinic work." She released the pull, letting him stand upright again, and continued. "Next! We have grinding bowls and mixing bowls for customers to buy. There's a lot of different salves and medicines that people can make themselves if they get the ingredients. First they grind the stems, petals, or leaves, depending on the herb or flower of course, and then they mix the extract together, usually with water, in the mixing bowl! And it's important not to get them confused since they're made to handle their own stress loads. If you used a grinding stone in a mixing bowl, the bowl would break. Got it?!"

Pulling him along once more... "Lastly are the bandage wraps. There are a few different kinds, as well as slings and things like that which are custom made by the Doctor herself in-between clinic time and consulting sessions! People can make their own, of course. But the Doctor's are tailor made for their jobs with precision and anatomical accuracy for maximum support and relief!" She said while pumping her free fist like a cheer.

Letting go of Maretu's hand, she hopped towards the middle of the room.

"Any questions so far?!" She asked with a clap of her hands.

"Yes ma'am." Giving a nod and seeming pleased to already be learning some of the ins and outs of the clinic, Maretu followed Linde around for the tour of the place until they arrived at the apothecary and she passed him off to Karly. His attention turned to her quickly as Linde headed back to whatever called for attention. Though, he seemed to be a few paces behind the girl who seemed brimming with far more energy than he. As the girl grabbed his hand before he could give a proper, respectful introduction, he decided to simply roll with it and let her drag him around.

Despite her almost ditzy sort of outward appearance, Maretu was confident the girl knew her stuff after only a few minutes of listening to her speak. Between the flower, the herbs, and everything else. Whenever she prompted him to make sure he was following, he chuckled and gave a firm nod back to her, before letting her continue on.

Before long, the Karly had given her a brief explanation of just about everything in the Apothecary that jumped out to the eye. "I can't say there are. You've a wonderful knack for explaining things, Karly. I suppose you must be used to it, after all." Maretu couldn't help but be in a good mood around the bubbly girl, letting out a short laugh as he combed a hand through his hair. "While my medical knowledge isn't particularly solid, I must admit I'm surprised at how much I've learned from you in just a few minutes."

Karly snapped her fingers in a peppy victory pose with one hip cocked to the side and a wink.

"That's what happens when you work for the best in the business!" She said, popping the "b's" a bit and pointing to a certificate on the wall.

Upon inspection, Maretu would read the following:

Recipient: Linde Xe' Almna

For exemplary demonstration of knowledge gleaned through this Accelerated Doctorate Program from the University of Dvarli, both in the classroom and practical application tests and demonstrations, the Board recognizes the Recipient as having graduated Aolum No'r Casse, top of their class.

Additionally, the Board recognizes the legitimacy of the Recipient's proposed creation of a new Field Of Study, hereto named "Neurology," the Study of the Human Nervous System. The proposal has been submitted for review amongst the Circle of Study for implementation into academic establishments.

Date: 15th Day, 1st Ertal Moon, Year 570

Signed: Tristan Beroltd, Samuel Visshion, Laela Ossum

The date put Linde at age 20 upon receiving the certificate, graduating with the highest honors and at the top of her class. And the Accelerated Doctorate Program was well-known throughout Cre' Est as the most difficult academic program at the most prestigious academic establishment relating to the field of medicine in all the continent. And to top it off, all three signatures came from the most venerated Doctors in recent history. All of whom graduated from the same program at the same university... When in their mid-30's.

"See?" Karly asked giddily while doing a bit of running in place and giggling ecstatically.

"Every time I look at that certificate I'm reminded of how amazing Doctor Almna is and why I'm so lucky to work here! Twenty years old at the time and she turned heads at Dvarli, and proposed a new field of study that has, as of last year, been accepted into Dvarli's future programs with Doctor Almna set to be its first Professor come year 578 when the University officially implements it into their curriculum!" She cheered with a fist pump and a spinning jump in place.

"That's four years away, of course. But you can bet that if I were smart enough I'd be enrolling into that program just to study under her! Egregious price gouging for tuition be damned!" She cheered.

"Well, I'll be..." Maretu's attention being turned to the certificate made him go quiet for a short moment as he went ahead and read through it. Seeing just how young the woman was when she received her commendations made his eyes go wide in astonishment. That explained why she knew so much about the nervous system; she was the literal founder of it.

Taking a mental note to speak with Linde on the topic later and properly congratulate her for it, he turned his attention back to Karly, not wanting to let the bubbly girl think he was ignoring her. "Full of surprises, Doctor Almna..." It reminded him that, while he could take an educated guess, he didn't know just how old Linde was, anyways. The idea of her finding the time to study so diligently, and eventually open the clinic, as well as apparently battle Te'i Sai amidst all of it alongside Shadow? It boggled the mind. "I made my way through my studies, but nowhere near as prestigious as Dvarli, mind you." He didn't really want to bring up the fact he never actually finished those studies, and his time in the knights began right after he abandoned them.

"I just might have to follow in your footsteps. From the very little I've heard from Doctor Almna about the nervous system... I must admit, I'm intrigued beyond belief." A heartly laugh followed his words. "And I must say, Doctor Almna has certainly picked a wonderful bunch to work with. I've had nothing but warm welcomes from you and the rest of the staff here." He flashed back to Whimsey, who seemed less than thrilled to have him here, but she seemed new as well. Perhaps she was just standoffish by nature.

GojiBean GojiBean

"Hah!" Karly exclaimed with a snap of her fingers.

"Toldjya!" She said with a clap on his shoulder.

"Now! If you've no question about where everything is, let's get to how we handle customers!" She said, dragging him over to desk.

"It's pretty simple! We have prices painted on the tags for the pots, and the customers need to pay that much. We collect the payment first, and then the customer can take their goods with them. Last time we had an intern or someone helping me, they forgot to charge first and handed the pot over and the customer tried to dash out with it. Luckily, I'm pretty fast and I managed to take it back and told them I'd report them if they tried it again. So don't mess up!"

-------------

Meanwhile, on the roof of the clinic, Shadow crouched behind the pointed roof where he was safe from all prying eyes. From here, he could see everything behind the clinic. The front of the clinic faced an open street where nobody thinking to do harm would come from. But the rooftops behind the clinic, the alleyways, etc, were all viable paths for planning and executing any kind of attack.

While crouching, he felt his stomach screaming. The folds in his flesh and muscles from his crouch aggravated the stitching, forcing him to move from a crouch to a kneeling position while straightening his torso to alleviate the discomfort.

Wwweeeeeeaaaaaakkk...

Shut up.
He thought forcefully.

You are sooooooo weeeeeeaaaaaakkk without meeeee...

You'd like to think so, wouldn't you?

This paiiiiiinnnnn proves iiiiiiiittt...

This isn't pain.

Go ahead... Keep lyyyyyiiiiiinnnnnggg... It gives me strengthhhhhh...

Fuck off already!

... Silence.

Shadow took a deep breath and brushed the bottom of his chin. As he brought his hand up he saw the smears left behind by sweat. Using his palm, he rubbed the sides of his face and felt the moisture even before he brought his hand around to confirm the visual. Clenching a fist, he huffed through his nose before turning to his silent vigil.

Mothman Mothman

"Oh, there'll be no need to worry about that." Maretu chuckled after Karly told him the story about forgetting to take payment first. "My parents are shopkeepers, and we operated on the same system." Nodding to her, he let her drag him over to the counter just the same.

"So, apologies if this is obvious, but am I to be working here in the apothecary with you? I feel I'd likely do much better in here rather than in an exam room." While he was certain he could manage if that weren't the case, having been in his fair share of stressful medical situations, the apothecary seemed a lot more up his alley. A place for gentle chats with patients and such, as well as just basic business etiquette.

GojiBean GojiBean

"No worries! I gotchya!" She said with a peace sign.

"The Apothecary is pretty simple business. We usually get a steady stream of window shoppers for the most part. But there's just as many who actually want to make a purchase. So keep your eyes open, and you'll be able to tell which is which."

She walked behind the desk, motioning for him to follow her.

"We're open right now, so it's best if we keep the chatter to a minimum once we start to see heads walk by the windows. Until then though, if you have anymore questions I'm all set to answer em if I can!... Just... Not about how the herbs and stuff actually work. Cause the Doctor is the one who mixes them and knows what they do and why they do it. If you get a customer asking what potions do and why they work, just refer them to the clinic where they can ask the Doctor when she has a spare moment between clinic patients. Cool?!"

Mothman Mothman

Following the woman back behind the sales counter, he couldn't help but almost feel at home. The apothecary had the same homely sort of vibe as his parent's shop did. He was, in truth, looking forward to working here a lot more than he had originally assumed he would.

It made enough sense to him as to why Linde fronted most of the questions about what was sold here. She was the one concocting what sounded like most of them, after all. "Refer them to Linde... Of course." A hand moved up and combed through his hair as he glanced around a bit more. "Oh, I suppose on the topic... How much of this stuff is prescription? Or, does Linde handle all of the tonics and medicines that might be abused in those sorts of ways?"

GojiBean GojiBean

Karly thought a moment on the matter.

"Wellllllllll... We don't really deal with "prescriptions," to be honest. We deal more in broad-spectrum tonics, salves, and serums. Things basically everyone can use unless they're allergic to one or more ingredients. And we always have the ingredients listed on the packaging. The Doctor wouldn't say much about the prescription stuff other than it was both a legal issue, and some kind of logistics nightmare that she didn't care to deal with. So yeah. This Apthecary is broad spectrum." She said with a nod of her head.

Mothman Mothman

“Ah, fair enough...” He supposed that did make enough sense, that they didn’t deal with things of that sort. Especially seeing as Doctor Almna was the one making all of it, it made sense for her to be the one to sell it, too. “Well, I’ve got to say, it’s an honor to be on board.”

———

“Doctor Almna.” Gladdened thear it was close to closing, Whimsey tracked down Linde in the clinic to pick her ear on something. “When we’re closed... Can I have a word?”

GojiBean GojiBean

Linde had just finished washing her hands after dealing with a young patient with a scrape on his knee. Overprotective mother situation thinking a hospital visit was needed when a bandage would do.

"Hm? Of course. Let me just dry my hands real quick."

She grabbed a towel and dried her hands, placing it back on a wall holder as she turned to Whimsey.

"Would you like to speak in my office or in your quarters?"

Mothman Mothman

“Office is fine.” She glanced around, letting out a short sigh. “I’m gonna stay in there another few nights, anyways.”

Her leg was on the road to healing fully, but she was still planning to sleep in the office for the foreseeable future, at least until she could be certain that Te’i Sai wasn’t still tracking her. Even so, if one of their men saw her enter the clinic and not leave for the whole night... It could be trouble. “It’s about him.” She hoped that Linde would know that she meant Shadow, and that them talking in private would be best.

GojiBean GojiBean

Later that evening, as the clinic was closed for the night and the other nurses went to their quarters, Linde invited Whimsey into the office and locked the door to prevent interruptions.

"So, what about him do you want to hear about, Whimsey?"

Mothman Mothman

“...I wanna learn to fight.” She put it bluntly, not wanting to skirt around the issue. Would Shadow agree to help? She doubted it, especially after how much the man had already done.

“You and Shadow have done way too much for me, for me to have to be asking you to fight my battles, too... It’s unacceptable. Though, I ask mainly because I doubt Shadow would listen to me.”

GojiBean GojiBean

Linde's left eyebrow arched slightly, and she looked at the desk for a moment before returning her gaze to Whimsey.

"I don't think that's a good idea, Whimsey. At least, not yet."

She put her elbows on the table.

"Shadow can explain better than I can."

She stood up and opened the window, giving two sharp whistles, each starting low and rising in pitch, before returning to her seat. Within ten seconds, Shadow had climbed into the room through the window, albeit with a bit of difficulty due to his healing wounds, and stood beside Linde's desk.

"Can you tell her why learning to fight isn't a good idea right now? I don't remember the full details."

Shadow's glowing gaze shifted to Whimsey.

"Te'i Sai always deploys two teams for elimination missions. A Primary team of two to four operatives, and a secondary two-man Observation team. If the Primary team fails, the Observation team documents the failure and reports it back for re-assessment of the threat and priority on the elimination queue. The more resistance they encounter, the higher the priority becomes. If the Primary team falls, the target becomes a top priority against whom they will deploy between six to ten operatives to ensure elimination by any means necessary."

Linde kept a sideways glance glued to Shadow, intent on memorizing the details as he spoke.

"Linde told me what happened the night you two were attacked. You barely put up a real fight and needed Linde to bail you out. Your status on the queue fell because of that which is why you haven't seen them come back."

"Shadow!"
Linde barked.

Shadow glared at her.

"Be nice." She said firmly.

Shadow's eyes narrowed, and he looked back at Whimsey.

"Since you're a low priority, it's better if you don't learn to fight them until they decide you're not worth pursuing and move on. Then it'll be safe to teach you. It's already been nearly a week, so if you can hold out for a while longer you'll be in the clear."

Linde held up a hand to notify him that she'd heard enough and looked at Whimsey.

"Once they've given up hunting you, you won't need to worry about two-team setups. Those are only for elimination missions, right Shadow?"

He nodded.

"For now, we need you to rely on us for just a bit longer. Keep working in the clinic as you have been. Shadow will keep watch for us on the roof, which is well out of eyesight of the commonwealth. And if Te'i Sai spots him, they'll just avoid him. They don't know he's injured, and they know better than to approach him with a two or even a four-man team... Although five seems to be the magic number for kicking his ass." She said with a sideways smirk.

Shadow's glare shift slowly towards her as his eyes glowed brighter, which made Linde chuckle.

"Anyway. I know it's hard Whimsey. But please, swallow your pride for just a bit longer. Once Te'i Sai gives up trying to find you, we can teach you to protect yourself. Okay?"

Mothman Mothman

Whimsey knew where this was going as Linde opened her window and let out a few whistles, but was still amazed to see how quickly Shadow was in the room and at the woman's side. "Huh." She stated very plainly, blinking a few times at the taller man. "Didn't realize you could summon him as well." Her words were clearly sarcastic, but she shut up and let Shadow explain once Linde asked him to do as such.

Suffice to say, she was less than thrilled as to what he said. She wasn't awfully interested in the actual operations and how Te'i Sai went about taking care of their targets, though did find it a bit interesting, at least. As Shadow told her just how horribly she fought them off, she glanced off to the side with a small scowl. Yeah, she knew she didn't perform that well. Shadow didn't need to rub it in her face...

Having the Red-Eyed Demon do all of this for her while she was stuck just having to be in the clinic left a bad taste in her mouth. She didn't like people going out of their way to support or help her in general, and this was something else entirely. Linde and Shadow were putting their lives on the line for her. Even if it was part of the bigger picture of them fighting against Te'i sai, it still bothered her.

"...You really know how to make people feel just great, don't you?" Whimsey raised an eyebrow as she stood up from the chair she was in, walking over to the screen she had been sleeping behind. "I just worry they're gonna realize I'm staying in the clinic. It wouldn't take a genius to notice I come here at night and don't leave." A hand drifted up to her forehead, holding it as she felt a small headache coming on.

"Whatever you say." She obviously wasn't super pleased with having to just bide her time and wait, but supposed there wasn't much that could be done about it.

GojiBean GojiBean

Shadow huffed through his nose at Whimsey's accusation.

"I know how to tell the truth."

"Shadow... Shut it."
Linde said quietly, but firmly before looking back at Whimsey.

"They'll undoubtedly be scoping out the clinic. But that's also why it's imperative you stay here for the time being. If you were to leave, there's nothing we could do to protect you. At least while you're here, Shadow serves as a deterrent just by being here. Remember, Te'i Sai was taught to fear him just like regular people were. He doesn't have to risk anything so long as they're afraid to approach."

"However long that lasts."

Linde slowly turned towards him. And it took no words to read the frustration and anger in her widened and stern eyes coupled with tightened lips.

"Regardless..." She said as she looked back at Whimsey, taking a moment to breathe and calm herself down. "It sucks. Let's be honest about that. But it's the smart play, here. Te'i Sai won't waste more than another week or so on trying to find you given what happened during our first encounter with them."

"If anything they'll-"

"Will you SHUT UP!?"
Linde yelled, standing from her chair and knocking it down behind her.

Her harsh words matched her glare with fully furrowed brows, wide eyes, and teeth bared with fists shaking at her sides.

"Holy Mother's wrath, Shadow! You could try the patience of a stone!" She growled.

Shadow betrayed no emotion. He only stared back at her with a subtle flare in the intensity of his eye glow. Linde slowly took a deep breath, fixed her chair, and sat back down putting her forehead in her hand.

"Look..." She said softly. "If you want to help, go back up to the roof and keep watch."

Shadow left without a word by climbing up and out of the window into the night.

"That man..." Linde said with extreme exasperation in her voice as she put both hands over her eyes and slowly dragged them down her face until they fell to her lap. "Sorry, Whimsey. You didn't need to see something like that, but... I swear to the Holy Mother, that man knows nothing of the word "subtlety." Whatever he was about to say was undoubtedly just as rude and blunt as anything he's said up until now, and I didn't want to hear it." She whispered.

Mothman Mothman

"So I'm a caged rat." A huff followed her words as she brushed her bangs a bit off to the left. Shadow certainly wasn't making her feel any more safe. "I get it. Don't love that they're just... Watching me." Scoffing at her unfortunate and almost ironic situation, she watched Linde turn to Shadow with a frustrated look in her eyes. It was the first time she had seen her that pissed looking.

"A whole 'nother week...?" A hand drifted up to rest on her forehead for a moment. "Ugh... Would rather just drop dead." She spoke honestly, really despising this checkmate sort of situation she was in.

Hearing Linde shout at Shadow, of all people, made her snap back into the conversation entirely, tensing up and looking at her with wide eyes. She understood it entirely; she wanted to shout at Shadow as well. Though, in truth, she worried that Shadow would just shove a blade in her gut if she tried to argue with him. Thankfully, Linde forced him out before too long, and it was just the two woman yet again.

"I noticed. He certainly doesn't make this situation any more enjoyable." Leaning back in her chair, she folded her hands in her lap, glancing over to the screen she'd been sleeping behind. "Ugh. I'd hate for you to end up coming in here to a corpse in your office..." Shaking her head, she moved a hand up to her cheek, brushing over the wound that had mostly healed. The stitches were taken out, thankfully, but it had still left a decently nasty scar. "Maybe I take it back. Learning from him sounds like hell."

GojiBean GojiBean

Linde chuckled.

"You have no idea." She said as she sat up a bit straighter.

"My father was a General in the Cre' Itian military until just a few years ago when he retired. He taught me everything he knew about protecting myself. And he did so with strictness, discipline, and love. But he pushed me harder than I ever thought he would as his daughter. But Shadow..." She looked to the side with a bit of a shiver. "His training made my father's seem easy. After the first week I didn't bother keeping track of how many times I collapsed from exhaustion."

She leaned back in her chair a bit and stretched her arms out.

"I really do believe he means well," she said with a bit of a yawn at the end. "But sadly he isn't any good at showing it. I did my best to help him, and he's definitely made progress. Even since I last saw him. But he's got a long way to go before he can be considered any sort of conversationalist." She said with a chuckle.

Mothman Mothman

"He's something else..." She trailed off, clearly just as bothered as Linde was by how blunt and rude Shadow could be at times. While she was definitely grateful for the man's help thusfar, he certainly didn't make anything easy on anyone. "It paid off, I'm guessing? You're certainly one of the most capable fighters I've ever set eyes on." Her thoughts flashed back to the night Linde had bailed her out of dying at the hands of Te'i Sai, shuddering a bit at just how powerless she felt against them.

"No kidding." While she herself had never been one for enjoying conversation, she had forced herself to learn how to converse with just about anyone over the years. "...All the same, I'm sorry I brought all this up. Didn't want you and Shadow to fight, obviously." Shrugging, she stood up and stretched her arms up above her head. "Shadow'll make sure you get home safe, right?"

GojiBean GojiBean

Linde smiled.

"Yeah. Don't worry about me. This clinic is my second home and if either Shadow or I feel that it's unsafe for me to leave, then I won't."

She stood up and walked over to Whimsey, rubbing the top of her head.

"Anyway. You should get some sleep. Your hip is healing nicely, but it's got a ways to go yet before it's back to full strength. The more rest you give it, the better. And don't forget your stretching exercises tomorrow morning. Okay?"

Mothman Mothman

Whimsey nodded as Linde reassured her that she would be fine on her way home, crossing her arms and letting out a short breath, before looking the woman in the eyes. "Just be careful. Please."

As Linde rubbed her head, she glanced off to the side nervously. While she normally hated physical gestures like that, she didn't mind it so much with Linde. The woman was gentle and calming enough as a person that it didn't put her on edge. "Yeah, yeah..." While she voiced her distaste with the stretching Linde had her do like clockwork, she did them all as instructed. "Thanks again, Doctor Almna. Goodnight." With a short yawn, she turned and slid her screen open, falling onto the cot they had brought in with a small sigh.

GojiBean GojiBean

Linde nodded with a warm chuckle.

"Goodnight, Whimsey."

With that, Linde left the clinic for the evening. On her way back, she spied Shadow observing from the rooftops and giving her the all-clear wave. With everything clear, she walked home while he returned to the clinic to keep an eye out for any signs of Te'i Sai aiming to hunt down Whimsey.

In the days that followed, very little changed of the situation. Shadow reported only a single instance of seeing Te'i Sai scouring for Whimsey on the rooftops. But having remained hidden during his observation, he noted that their search was a half-hearted one. Although the one tall assassin he'd seen come to Linde's home had made an appearance, even he seemed to have other things on his mind. Although, what those things were remained a bit of a mystery.

Come the end of the week, Shadow had returned to full strength while Whimsey's injuries as well seemed to have gotten to the point where she'd have no issues unless they were re-injured in a similar fashion. All the muscles had recovered, her flexibility from the stretching exercises had returned, and the bone had healed nicely as well from the stab.

Her final examination with Linde went well, and the time had finally come. Linde invited Whimsey to her office, and sat her down for a heart to heart.

"Okay Whimsey. We're on the eve of the fourth Laetal Moon, and at this point I think it's safe to say Te'i Sai's given up on finding you. Shadow hasn't seen them in the city since our last discussion on the matter."

She took a deep breath, and smiled.

"So at this point, Whimsey... You're free to choose what to do. If you want to return to your own life and leave the clinic, I'll understand and let you go. Shadow told me to offer the chance to learn more about protecting yourself, and that if you want to take him up on the offer he'll be waiting for you on the Church Bell Tower at midnight tonight. So, what do you think?"

Mothman Mothman

Whimsey was looking forward to her leg being in working order again, to say the least, she wasn't exactly looking forward to the inevitable conversation that would be coming from Linde. She couldn't just be baggage for the woman forever, after all. Unlike Maretu, who took a quick shining to work within the clinic, and made friends with the other nurses and staff quite quickly, Whimsey just wasn't as cut out for social work.

"As much as I appreciate everything you've done for me, Doctor Almna..." She choked on her words for a moment, unsure of what to say. What did she even want? Without an employer or a proper education, if she went out into the world now, and tried to stray away from the life of an assassin and do something else with her life... It likely wouldn't take long for her to fall back into killing out of desperation. Either that, or she'd do something stupid and get herself killed. Having paused for long enough, she sighed and decided to just be honest.

"I don't know, Doctor Almna." While she was certainly glad to know Te'i Sai wasn't after her, it just meant she'd have to go ahead and face reality. "...I don't have anywhere else to go. No family, no work that isn't assassinations... I never got a real education, growing up. Taught myself to read and write over the years." Clicking her lips, she leaned forward and propped her head on her hand. "I'll talk with Shadow tonight." She put it bluntly as she rubbed at the scar on her cheek.

GojiBean GojiBean

Linde nodded.

"I understand, Whimsey. You're welcome to remain here for as long as you like until you figure something out. I just wanted you to know you have options."
