Jessica smiled and gave him a thumbs up as she left him alone to settle in.
About ten minutes later, Linde summoned him to the Apothecary.
"Good afternoon, mister Arjun. If you would please shadow me for a while, I'll teach you how the Apothecary functions." She said pleasantly.
Along the wall nearest the Employee Living Area were cabinets lined up along the walls behind a long desk which stretched from one side of the wall to the other. To get by and to the door to the Employee Living Area, there was a special door in the desk that lifted straight up on a hinge. Along the length of the desk were samples of flowers, herbs, mixing and grinding bowls, bandage wraps, etc. Anything and everything one could need for patching themselves up and making their own salves medicines if they knew how.
On the far side wall, there were two large bay windows with beautiful floral pots hanging from the ceiling for decoration. And between the windows was another desk with various splints, canes, crutches, etc. Everything one could need for taking care of greater wounds which caused minor to severe mobility impairments.
Behind the main desk was a young woman with blonde hair wrapped in a bun, glasses, clear and tan skin, and a pleasant smile on her face.
"The Apothecary is fairly simple. And Karly here runs the desk. Karly, this is Maretu Arjun. He's going to work with you starting today. Please be sure to show him the ropes, okay? I need to get back to the clinic."
"Certainly doctor!" She said cheerfully.
Once Linde left the room, Karly turned to Maretu and clapped her hands together with a little bunny hop in place.
"Okay! So! Let me show you around since we don't have any customers in at the moment!" She said, grabbing his hand and practically dragging him with rather surprising strength for such a petite girl, towards the main desk.
"So! Starting here on the left side of the main desk, we have a bunch of flowers. They're arranged by effect of the extract we harvest by grinding their stems and petals down fro-Uh... Sorry. Lemme back up a sec. They're arranged by stem extract here with the red tags on the pots, and petal extract with the yellow tags. From left to right, within those color codings, they're arranged by basic effect. And there's three," she held up three fingers right up towards his face,"-count 'em. Three effect types. First is skin maintenance and repair. Second is blood clotting or thinning. Third is what the Doctor calls 'neural' effects, such as sleep, temporary or permanent paralysis, etc!" She said with a clap of her hands.
"... Uh... That last one sounded kinda weird, didn't it?" She giggled nervously. "So, look! When it comes to paralysis, it's sometimes necessary to permanently paralyze a patient's body part to numb them to pain for extreme circumstances like limb removal surgery. If you permanently paralyze the leg, for example, they won't feel any pain as a result of surgery which takes a major stress off of them. They do have to be more attentive to the wound in the recovery phase. But once the wound has recovered and all the skin and muscle has settled into its new state post-removal of the limb, the patient won't ever feel any pain there as a result of paralysis. If we didn't do that, they'd probably be living with pain for the rest of their lives simply because of damaged nerves, improperly attached muscles, etc. Things that aren't their fault, and that we really can't do much to heal beyond what we've already done by that point. Make sense?!" She asked with an excited hop.
"Good! Moving on!" She said, once again dragging him along with her. "Next along the desk is wild growing herbs from this area around Valkyom." She pulled him in and whispered in his ear. "Don't tell the customers this, but there are a few herbs growing wild that the Doctor doesn't sell and are only for her personal use with making some of her more unique medicines and such for clinic work." She released the pull, letting him stand upright again, and continued. "Next! We have grinding bowls and mixing bowls for customers to buy. There's a lot of different salves and medicines that people can make themselves if they get the ingredients. First they grind the stems, petals, or leaves, depending on the herb or flower of course, and then they mix the extract together, usually with water, in the mixing bowl! And it's important not to get them confused since they're made to handle their own stress loads. If you used a grinding stone in a mixing bowl, the bowl would break. Got it?!"
Pulling him along once more... "Lastly are the bandage wraps. There are a few different kinds, as well as slings and things like that which are custom made by the Doctor herself in-between clinic time and consulting sessions! People can make their own, of course. But the Doctor's are tailor made for their jobs with precision and anatomical accuracy for maximum support and relief!" She said while pumping her free fist like a cheer.
Letting go of Maretu's hand, she hopped towards the middle of the room.
"Any questions so far?!" She asked with a clap of her hands.
