Chapter 2-8: An Explosive Entrance And Exit [For A Better Age]

Duke’s Palace

OOC
Wuffy: Anoke and Jorik landed right next to the main door to the palace, and there is also the giant gaping blast hole in the palace Jorik can also run into if he desires. But Jorik can still climb back into the building if you want. Just wanted to double check Jorik’s action. Also is he just wanting to go into the building, or go back to the Duke's office or some other destination or goal?[OOC]

Warehouse District

Like a goddess of death, Narrante swoops down on one of the un-expecting Valhal’s spreading the liquid. He doesn’t suspect or feel a thing as his head is removed from his shoulders. It takes a moment for his counterpart to notice anything is wrong when the body hits the ground. The only noise from the attack.

The last visible Valhal warrior troublemaker panics and stumbles away from Narrante as he starts to light a torch, and looks to apply it to the liquid he and his companions had been spreading.

On the warehouse roof the Valhal archers fire their bows at Calypso. But Calypso dodges the arrows with almost comical ease. The man Calypso had thrown from the ground stumbles to his feet. Swinging his sword unsuccessfully at Calypso in a hobbled manner.

Duke’s Palace

Jorik runs through the main door of the palace. He races up the stairs, and onto the second floor. There he runs back into the Duke’s office. He can hear fighting and screams of pain in the palace. All too close to the Duke’s office. He sees the Duke trying to steam the bleeding of Bright Star. Ledaal Ginio tears off some of his clothing to use as a makeshift bandage for the wound. Vanessa guards the door against any attackers, and closes the door after Jorik enters. Holding her chakram ready for immediate use.

In the ruins of the courtyard one of the cloaked figures freezes up in the face of such a dangerous figure as Chain. He drops his weapon and makes a run for it. Deciding this was all too much for him after all. The other one makes a half hearted stab at Chain, but the Alchemical easily deflects the blow.

The Lion Sent Into The World sees that Anoke has noticed him. The demon does a deep throated growl as it leaps from the wall and into the courtyard. It slowly approaches Anoke like a beast on the prowl. “Well if it isn’t the dreaded Anoke,†the jade lion says mockingly in its thousand voices voice without opening its mouth. “Keeping busy with tonight’s activities Sun’s Liar?†The demon slowly circles Anoke, clearly intent on the hunt.

The great jade lion on top of the Duke Palace makes a turning jump down the side of the building. It uses its claws to slow its decent, and then lands with its front two legs with a loud thump on one of the window seals to the Duke’s study. The Duke’s eyes go wide, and desperately tries to pull his wife away from the window and monster. “Not again! What happened to the wards protecting the palace?!†He says in disbelief and fear as he drags his dagger. A seemingly poor instrument to combat the creature climbing its way into the room.

Its claws dig into the wood of the floor, and the demon scampers its way out of the window and into the room. It growls in pleasure when it sees the occupants when Vanessa suddenly produces three chakram’s made of air that then slam and slice into the creature. The jade lion roars in pain as chunks of it are sliced clean off, and it is knocked off balance. It turns to Vanessa with nothing but spite in its eyes. “That…hurt…!â€

The sounds of fighting and footsteps now sounds depressingly close to the door to the hallway outside.

Calypso

Calypso's mind reels a little, but not so much that it isn't trivially easy to dodge the swings of the swordsman. Diverting her focus like that can be difficult, leaving more chances for failure. Averse to risk as she is, she instead decides it easier to focus on one at a time, and the swordsman is unluckly enough to have her full attention.

There is no excessive show of force. Just an audible thud, as the swordsman feels a great weight against his chest, and is left staggered as several of his ribs detatch themselves from his spine. Invisible hands feel along his lungs, making it difficult to breathe, and reminding him quite clearly that this could be far worse.

"Why are you doing this!?" She asks the swordsman, then glances at the archers. "Why!?" Her words are demanding, but her posture cold to them. Only this want of knowledge holds back her wrath at the sight of this pointless slaughter.

Narrante

Narrante's blade barely felt resistance, its stroke cleanly severing flesh and bone. No sorrow crossed her eyes, nor did she hesitate when she spotted the nearby warrior trying to light his torch. The strange liquid was all around, and his hands were occupied with this task, not a weapon. Bounding over the corpse of the first unfortunate Valhal, Narrante made a beeline for the man, her free hand stretching out with long, pale fingers.

She'll try and snatch the torch from his hand. Dexterity+Larceny:

2 9 4 1 1 1 3 8 7 6 = 3 successes

Warehouse District

As soon the Valhal warrior lights the torch, and looks to drop it into the liquid. He finds that it is no longer in his hands. Narrante quickly pulls the torch from the man’s grasp. The man fumbles desperately for his weapon despite clearly being outclassed by the Solar of the night.

The archers panic as they see Calypso pick their fellow apart. “Screw this, I didn’t sign up for this!†One of them yells as he runs for the ladder lying against the warehouse. The other drops his weapon in fear, and runs over the edge of the warehouse, grabbing the side of the roof, and lowers himself down to the street below with a painful drop.

The swordsman gasps in pain as Calypso tears up his insides. “P-p-please,†wasps the man in pain, and looks at Calypso with fear. “Please show mercy! It was all Ofran’s idea!†He coughs violently from Calypso grasping his lungs. “It was a distraction. We were going to take the boat out of the harbor. Get our freedom back. Away from where you would enslave us!†He struggles painfully against Calypso’s grasp. “He would have kill me if I didn’t agree to join him. He’s losing it. He’s been talking to himself all day. As though there was someone in his head or speaking to a ghost. He’s not right in the head. Hasn’t been since that fight.†The man look at Calypso in desperation. “Please…stop.â€

Anoké Jandro

Torn between the lions and the palace, Anoké watches as Jorik rushes away through the flames and rubble. "Good luck, friend," he says quietly.

Turning, Anoké faces the teodozjia. His expression is hard. He won't betray the fear pitting in his stomach as he comes face-to-face with the first true horror he hasn't fled from. The first he truly can't flee from.

"Is that what they're calling me?" Anoké asks harshly. "Or is it just what your kind call me? Either way, it's heartening." Unwillingly, his eyes dart across the courtyard, towards his idle Torchward. "I don't suppose you'd spare me a few seconds to get ready?"

~ ~ ~

Just some banter as we wait for other things to happen

Narrante

The ninja's expert hands were skilled at lifting something from another's grasp, and the torch came easily. Careful not to drop the thing, she held it aloft and brought her sword to bear again. With the same calm as before, she swung the blade in a silent arc, a diagonal slash at his sword arm while he clumsily drew it.

Attacking him:

4 4 4 8 6 10 7 2 4 9 10 8 6 4 1 2 6 = 8 successes

Damage: 14-3+7...

6 1 6 7 7 10 5 9 1 3 10 2 7 4 7 4 5 8 = 8 successes

If that manages to kill him, she'll run up onto and over the warehouse to find Calypso. Unparalleled Acumen Meditation lets her Spider-Foot whenever she wants.

Calypso

The demon-child stares incredulously as the man tries to explain himself. "Enslave you?" She asks in disbelief. "Ofran... Did this?" She asks, glancing towards the warehouse and the dead littering the streets. Then, she realizes the archers are escaping and frowns. They are murderers, who killed innocent people, for what? A distraction? They throw their lot in with a man who murders people who have done no wrong? Calypso merely sighs sadly, closes her eyes, and each of the fleeing archers explodes into a cloud of gore. Her attention then returns to the swordsman.

"Mercy..." She repeats the word, rolling it around on her tongue. She cannot hate, it is beyond her, but disappointment... This she feels deeply. "Alright." She nods.

With the nod, the swordsman's blade melts like water and snakes its way around his arms. He is pushed to his knees, his wrists bound behind his back to his ankles. Finally, his clothes are shredded, as his crimes are carved into his chest, visible to all in cauterized writing.

"I will not kill you. You are not a threat anymore." Calypso says softly. "I leave your fate to the families of those you killed. If they wish to show you mercy, do not waste the chance. If they do not... I hope it is quick for you." She tells the pitiful man sadly, turning to leave.

"We do not seek to enslave you, or anyone. The future ahead for you would've been much brighter, had you done the right thing." She says over her shoulder, before dashing to look for anyone else in distress.

(Two attacks, one for each archer. Lethal and piercing, this time.

As Chain brushes aside the attempted blow, he targets the offender's weapon, then knocks it away with the flick of a wrist, sending it clattering out of sight,

"You are outclassed-" he then brings the pommel of his sword crashing into the assailant's face, "-don't try that again."

He steadies himself and starts to walk towards the scene unfolding before him: Two strange jade lions, an imposing man, and is that a magitech vehicle? This is certainly becoming interesting.

Duke’s Palace

The cloaked figure’s weapon drops to the ground and the man soon after it. He turns to see the increasingly grim scene unfold before him.

“You should save your blessings for yourself Sun’s Liar,†says the jade lion with its thousand voices as Anoke turns back to it. “It’s what you are,†it replies when Anoke inquires about the title the teodozjia called him. “Made by the traitorous Sun to lie, to fabricate, and to manipulate in His name. That is what you are. That’s what you were made to do. It is good to see one of your kind acknowledge that title.â€

Its head turns slightly towards Torchwood as though divining Anoke’s intentions as it circles him in a predatory fashion. “No,†it says flatly when Anoke asks about being given time. It seems to smile as it lowers its head. “I think we both know how stupid that would be.â€

About to climb up the warehouse to find Calypso, Narrante was distracted by an imminent cry from a burning structure; probably set ablaze by the same men before she and Calypso had arrived. Forgetting the Infernal, Narrante, sword in hand ran for the warehouse.

She'll run inside the nearest entrance of the warehouse and try to find the trapped people!

Make a run for it,†the demon says indicating Torchwood. “We are curious just how far you will make it bef-“ the jade lion is cut off when it is encased in a pillar of white fire. The Lion Who Walks the World lets out a roar of protest before it is consumed to be returned to where’s it came. Leaving nothing more than black ash.

The jade lion in the Duke’s study turns its head back to the window. “We really do hate that god,†it growls. “Always ruining our fun around here.†It turns its head back to Jorik and the others with a look of annoyance. “You got lucky this time. Do not count on such fortune in the f-“ the demon is silenced by another white column of fire, and is consumed by the flames. Leaving behind nothing but black ash.

Anoke and Chain see Glorius Blessed Horizon drop down onto the lawn between the palace and its wall in his human form with large raven like wings sprouting out of his back. He is breathing hard. Looking exhausted from his recent efforts. He turns to Anoke and grins weakly. “I think that got them. I figured you would not mind if I dropped in on this party.†The Icehold god looks at the blasted section of the palace. Flames continue to lick at the side of the building. “Hopefully there will not be anymore guests like that showing themselves. I’m afraid I am too near the end of my rope to help effectively deal with more of their kind. Those things seem to love to poke their noses in Maiden and I’s neighborhood. Though we usually only have to deal with one at a time.†He shakes his head at the ruins. “This is a real mess.â€

He points cautiously at Chain. “I don’t suppose the big fellow over there is going to be a problem? Because I think we are going to be needed inside the palace.â€

Inside the palace study. Duke Walks and Ginio lift Bright Star carefully. She looks pale from loss of blood and the pain. They move towards the door out of the room when there is a sudden loud bang against it. Axes and swords are seen chopping their way through the door, and it damage to the point that a handful of cloaked figures manage to kick the door down. “Can’t go that way,†says Vanessa pointing out the obvious. She raises her chakram in order to throw is. “This night keeps getting better and better.â€

Hearing the screaming and seeing the building on its last legs, Calypso takes a very different approach to Narrante. As she follows the ninja, she carefully and precisely disassembles anything that is on fire. She is careful not to damage any supporting structure until all that it supports is gone. Piece by piece, the building vanishes as it is reduced to particulate dust, the flames dieing with their fuel.

Spending 6 motes to enhance each attack with one auto-success. All Peripheral, so Calypso's anima flares to the 12-15 level

Just rolling damage in a big pool. It's a grand total of 31 dice, -3 for the total soak (Piercing lethal, so it's -1 per roll). Since she's attacking an object, that's 29 successes, so...

The malign and deadly aura of the demon formerly in their presence causes Jorik to be more jittery then he would likely care to admit. His first shot at the cultists results in his arrow bouncing off the door, and nearly hitting Vanessa in the head. “Hey, watch it,†she snaps at Jorik angrily. Snapping out of the presence of the banished demon, Jorik concentrates on the task at hand. His next arrow slams into the closest cultist bashing his way through the door. Going straight into the eye socket, and halfway punching through the back of the skull. But more individuals continue to pack against the door at it gives way.

As Chain looks over his prisoners, he is easily able to stabilize them from the immediate threat of death. Though the one with the badly broken leg does go into shock, but it isn’t life threatening under the Alchemical’s care. Inside the broken section of the palace sees a number of bodies, some of the cloaked figures, palace guards, and servants intermixed. An inefficient waste of lives. Up some nearby stairs he can hear shouts and screams of pain.

To interate for everyone. Everyone is allowed to get either one two dot artifact, or two one dot artifacts from the armory. As long as it seems something semi-reasonable. Jorik can pick up the Jade Hearthstone Bracers if he so desires later. I'll wait for Narrante's actions before posting on what is going on there.[OOC]

Anoké Jandro

Anoké stares for a second at the large, accented man. "I'll... do that," he says, somewhere in the back of his head weighing the importance of everyone in the study versus finding out just what happened with the perplexing individual in front of him. "Horizon, keep an eye on the situation out here," he says, not-so-surreptitiously pointing at Chain.

Dashing across the courtyard, Anoké leaps onto Torchward and bullets off into the palace, quietly relishing one of the few opportunities he'll have to drive it indoors without looking like a cad or a child. As he swerves into the hall leading to the study, he notices the large group of hooded figures gathered outside the door. A cruel grin breaks across his face.

The first cloak doesn't even see it coming. Torchward slams into him, throwing him down the hall. Anoké doesn't stop to enjoy it. He's already off the bike, diving feet-first into the mass.

* * *

Those clustered into the Duke's study hear the roar of a lion, followed by a series of rhythmic whumping noises. There's several shouts, and a gargled scream, and a sudden, unexpected silence.

* * *

Anoké glares up from the now-stained carpets of the palace hall, pinning one of the hooded figures to the ground by weighting his forearm against the man's throat. Around him are clustered the unmoving bodies of five of the others.

"Give up," he commands, just as the study door suddenly splinters and shatters open.

Narrante

As Narrante sought to spot the trapped Iceholders within, her eyes widened as, before her, a series of collapsed and burning timbers were turned to dust by some unseen force. Looking back over her shoulder, she spotted Calypso, the young woman marveling at her abilities. There would be time to ask about this later, however. Trusting her companion to stifle the flames and wreckage, she hurried deeper into the warehouse.

Sorry for the delay, I wasn't sure if the bonus applied to all rolls or not. Here we go.

Duke's Palace

The five unharmed remaining cloaked figures looked on the scene of carnage Anoke has caused with stunned amazement. The moment is more than Vanessa needs to cause her own carnage. She throws the chakram at the first man who enters the door. Removing the arm that holds his axe. The chakram returns to Vanessa, and the cloaked figure is slain when the chakram slams into his chest. Her third throw removes the head of the woman who steps in next, and the third cloaked figure as the returning chakram slams into his head.

Only two remain, not counting the one paralyzed by fear within Anoke’s grip. One of them shakingly holds his sword. Unsure what to do while being trapped between two groups of Exalted that so clearly outclass them. The other remaining cloaked figure immediately goes into a stance and starts chanting. Horizon flies into the Duke’s study. Seeing the cloaked figure casting a spell in the hallway the Valhal god raises his spear leaps at him without hesitation. With burst of speed that is almost impossible to catch with the human eye, Horizon charges the man, and skewers him in the chest mid incantation. Horizon kicks the corpse of his spear. He turns his head to the last remaining combat able cloaked figure. His hand flashes out, now a ravens claw, grabs the man, and slams him against the wall. Casually choking the man and knocking him halfway senseless. “Well then,†says Horizon without a hint of humor. “I believe you belong to me now.â€

---------------------

While dragging his prisoners into the palace, Chain sees that the damage to the building is quite substantial. Likely this entire section of the building would be too structurally damage to be safe to work in. That and the gradually growing fires in portions of the palace is not a good sign. The sounds of fighting seem to die out in the upper portions of the building, and only the crackle of fire, collapsing and falling architecture, and the cries of confusion and pain echo in the palace.

Behind him Chain hears more individuals stomping their way behind him. He sees a dozen Icehold guards approach the ruins, weapons ready. “Halt!†The young man who seems to be in charge yells at Chain. “Who are you and what are you doing? What happened here at the palace?â€

Warehouse District

Calypso immediately starts to disassemble the burning structure as Narrante fights against the smoke and fire as she runs into the building. Calypso’s work does much to dissipate the heat and smoke, but she is working against time and as burning timbers continue to fall despite Calypso’s bests efforts. Narrante follows the screams for help. Seeing a half dozen of people tied to one of the warehouses support beams. Iceholder’s by the look of them. But as she gets closer, and the smoke no longer obscures her vision, she sees that one of the people is in fact Cen Contractor. Though his face is covered in ash, and his forehead has a nasty cut that blood has poured from.

Narrante cuts the ropes holding them in place. They thank her, and none too soon as that section of the building collapses. They run to the exit of the warehouse, but Narrante sees one of the support beams collapse. She is forced to tackle a couple of the women she is escorting out of the way before they are crushed and burned to death. They get up, and have to dodge more falling structure as Calypso tries to keep up, and dismember the building in the most efficient manner possible.

But what is the room collapses as Narrante and those she is rescuing try to approach another exit of the building. Calypso sees what is going to happen, and manages to catch the portion of the room threatening to kill them. Dissecting it, and removing it as a threat. Then proceeding to cut a new exit for those outside that Narrante is able to use to get the people out of the building. Though a little bit the worse for wear, the group of people Narrante saved do not appear to be permanently injured.

“Thank you, thank you,†says Cen Contractor before going into a coughing fit. He looks weary to the bone, and given the bruises on his face and split lip, not treated particularly well by his captors. “Oh it was terrible! That Valhal…Ofran I think? Yes! That was his name. He and his thugs attacked my workers and I. Took us captive, killed people, started setting everything on fire. That monster seemed completely off kilter. Mad, and not in just the angry way like usual. Carried on whole insane conversations with himself while he had me and my people tied up. Would have killed us all.†Contractor looks around. “This is all too awful to believe. Why is this happening?€

Chain barely has time to process the sounds coming from upstairs, the flash of light from up the stairwell, or the fact that everything was about to come down on his head before he is addressed. He stops moving when spoken to. He turns around slowly, knowing that the current situation could look somewhat incriminating at first glance,

"These are saboteurs. I was in neighborhood and thought best to help. Now please citizens, help me clear this area before the section collapse."

Chain

The guards look at Chain with suspicious. But their lead motions for four of them to go into the ruins. “Get in there and see what you can do. Help any survivors first. But watch out for the people who did this. They may be looking to do an ambush.†He turns back to Chain with a frown. “You will have to excuse me if I am a bit suspicious at the moment. But this,†he motions to ruins of the palace, “is not exactly a pleasant night or something to come up to. If you don’t mind we will be taking those men there into custody to be taken care of and interrogated. So what was a nice foreigner like you doing near the palace at this late hour in the cold? And what in Malfaes happened here? It seems like the whole city is going mad tonight.†The officer look more frustrated and aggravated then anything. Give his city-state has just been attacked, and was on fire in some places.
